Ukrainians hold torchlit march to honor WWII Nazi collaborator (VIDEOS)

Crowds in Lviv carried nationalist flags and shouted slogans in tribute to Stepan Bandera

 

Hundreds of Ukrainians marched through the center of Lviv bearing torches, flares, and red and black neo-Nazi flags on New Year’s Day.

 

The event was organized to honor WWII-era nationalist leader and Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera’s birthday.

 

Videos circulating on social media on Wednesday show a square in the western Ukrainian city lit up with red flares, as men in camouflage marched and shouted “Slava Ukraini” (Glory to Ukraine).

 

In one video, a group of marchers are seen carrying Ukrainian flags, the red and black flags of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), as well as a battle standard with Bandera’s face emblazoned on the red and black

 

According to Ukrainian outlet Strana, the march was preceded by a concert and prayer near a monument dedicated to the nationalist figure. An explosive new study conducted within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) own laboratory has ''revealed excessively high levels of DNA contamination in Pfizer’s mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.''

 

Tests conducted at the FDA’s White Oak Campus in Maryland found that residual DNA levels exceeded regulatory safety limits by 6 to 470 times.

 

The study was undertaken by student researchers under the supervision of FDA scientists. The vaccine vials were sourced from BEI Resources, a trusted supplier affiliated with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), previously headed by Anthony Fauci.

 

Recently published in the Journal of High School Science, the peer-reviewed study challenges years of dismissals by regulatory authorities, who had previously labelled concerns about excessive DNA contamination as baseless.

 

The FDA is expected to comment on the findings this week. However, ''the agency has yet to issue a public alert, recall the affected batches, or explain how vials exceeding safety standards were allowed to reach the market.''

 

The Methods

The student researchers employed two primary analytical methods:

 

NanoDrop Analysis – This technique uses UV spectrometry to measure the combined levels of DNA and RNA in the vaccine. While it provides an initial assessment, it tends to overestimate DNA concentrations due to interference from RNA, even when RNA-removal kits are utilised.

 

Qubit Analysis – For more precise measurements, the researchers relied on the Qubit system, which quantifies double-stranded DNA using fluorometric dye.

 

Both methods confirmed the presence of DNA contamination far above permissible thresholds. These findings align with earlier reports from independent laboratories in the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany and France.

 

Expert Reaction

Kevin McKernan, a former director of the Human Genome Project, described the findings as a “bombshell,” criticising the FDA for its lack of transparency.

 

“These findings are significant not just for what they reveal but for what they suggest has been concealed from public scrutiny. Why has the FDA kept these data under wraps?” McKernan questioned.

While commending the students’ work, he also noted limitations in the study’s methods, which may have underestimated contamination levels.

 

“The Qubit analysis can under-detect DNA by up to 70% when enzymes are used during sample preparation,” McKernan explained. “Additionally, the Plasmid Prep kit used in the study does not efficiently capture small DNA fragments, further contributing to underestimation.”

 

In addition to genome integration, McKernan highlighted another potential cancer-causing mechanism of DNA contamination in the vaccines.

 

He explained that plasmid DNA fragments entering the cell's cytoplasm with the help of lipid nanoparticles, could overstimulate the cGAS-STING pathway, a crucial component of the innate immune response.

 

''“Chronic activation of the cGAS-STING pathway could paradoxically fuel cancer growth,” McKernan warned. “Repeated exposure to foreign DNA through COVID-19 boosters may amplify this risk over time, creating conditions conducive to cancer development.”''

 

Adding to the controversy, traces of the SV40 promoter were detected among the DNA fragments. While the authors concluded these fragments were “non-replication-competent” meaning they cannot replicate in humans, McKernan disagreed.

 

“To assert that the DNA fragments are non-functional, they would need to transfect mammalian cells and perform sequencing, which wasn’t done here,” McKernan stated.

 

“Moreover, the methods used in this study don’t effectively capture the full length of DNA fragments. A more rigorous sequencing analysis could reveal SV40 fragments several thousand base pairs long, which would likely be functional,” he added.

 

Regulatory Oversight Under Scrutiny

Nikolai Petrovsky, a Professor of Immunology and director of Vaxine Pty Ltd, ''described the findings as a “smoking gun.”''

 

“It clearly shows the FDA was aware of these data. Given that these studies were conducted in their own labs under the supervision of their own scientists, it would be hard to argue they were unaware,” he said.

Prof Petrovsky praised the quality of work carried out by the students at the FDA labs.

 

“The irony is striking,” he remarked. “These students performed essential work that the regulators failed to do. It’s not overly complicated—we shouldn’t have had to rely on students to conduct tests that were the regulators’ responsibility in the first place.”

 

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which has consistently defended the safety of the mRNA vaccines, released its own batch testing results, claiming they met regulatory standards. However, Prof Petrovsky criticised the TGA’s testing methods.

 

“The TGA’s method was not fit for purpose,” he argued. “It didn’t assess all the DNA in the vials. It only looked for a small fragment, which would severely underestimate the total amount of DNA detected.”

 

Implications for Manufacturers and Regulators

''Now that DNA contamination of the mRNA vaccines has been verified in the laboratory of an official agency and published in a peer-reviewed journal, it becomes difficult to ignore.''

 

It also places vaccine manufacturers and regulators in a precarious position.

 

Addressing the contamination issue would likely require revising manufacturing processes to remove residual DNA, which Prof Petrovsky explained would be impractical.

 

“The only practical solution is for regulators to require manufacturers to demonstrate that the plasmid DNA levels in the vaccines are safe,” Prof Petrovsky stated.

 

“Otherwise, efforts to remove the residual DNA would result in an entirely new vaccine, requiring new trials and effectively restarting the process with an untested product.”

 

Now the onus is on regulators to provide clarity and take decisive action to restore confidence in their oversight. Anything less risks deepening the scepticism of the public.

 

Both the US and Australian drug regulators have been approached for comment.

GOP leadership is angling to diminish the motion used to oust a House speaker in order to avoid a repeat of the mutiny against Kevin McCarthy that crippled the lower chamber for some three weeks in 2023.

Under a new rules package that is slated for a vote Friday, the motion to vacate the chair will require a lawmaker in the majority party to garner eight co-sponsors in the same party in order to get a vote.

That means a minimum of nine Republicans will have to back an effort to topple their speaker in order to trigger a vote. Given the GOP’s slim control in the House, if a rep meets that threshold, the speaker will be ousted unless Democrats intervene.

Various Republican factions had reached a deal on the rule change in November. The threshold for a vote on the motion had previously been one.

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) exploited the low threshold to oust then-House Speaker McCarthy (R-Calif.) , a first in US history.

At the time, Gaetz had seven Republicans backing him. A subsequent failed bid by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to depose Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) last April had 10 Republicans who blocked efforts to quash her motion. Democrats bailed Johnson out at the time.

Some Democrats have railed against the rules change. Typically, the rules packages at the start of the new Congress are partisan pieces of legislation.

“The American people did not vote for whatever the hell this is — and you better believe that Democrats will not let Republicans turn the House of Representatives into a rubber stamp for their extremist policies,” Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) fumed, per Axios.

Another key change in the rules package, which was rolled out on Wednesday, includes dissolving the congressional Diversity & Inclusion Office, which Republicans have long maligned.

Republicans are also planning to rename the “House Committee on Oversight and Accountability” as “the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform;” and the “Office of Congressional Ethics” as the “Office of Congressional Conduct.”

The soon-to-be-named Office of Congressional Conduct is an independent watchdog that investigates possible wrongdoing by lawmakers and can refer matters to the House Committee on Ethics.

In addition to those adjustments, the 36-page rules package tees up votes on multiple Republican-backed upcoming pieces of legislation, including a border security bill and a measure demanding proof of citizenship to vote in elections, which already passed the House last year but wasn’t taken up in the Senate.

A vote on the rules package has been scheduled for Friday when the 119th Congress is sworn in, though that is not guaranteed as it is slated to occur after the speakership vote.

Johnson is staring down a very arduous speakership vote on Friday and can only afford to lose one vote if all members of the new Congress are present.

Already, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has indicated that he will vote against Johnson, and others such as Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) have suggested they are on the fence.

“I think we’ll get it done. I really do, Lawrence. I’ve talked to every single one of those friends and colleagues over the holidays,” he added. “We’re shifting into a brand new paradigm.”

President Joe Biden is preparing to issue a decree permanently banning new offshore oil and gas development in some US coastal waters, locking in difficult-to-revoke protections for sensitive marine areas during his final weeks in the White House.

 

Biden is set within days to issue the executive order barring the sale of new drilling rights in portions of the country’s outer continental shelf, according to people familiar with the effort who asked not to be named because the decision isn’t public.

 

The move is certain to complicate President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitions to drive more domestic energy production. Unlike other executive actions that can be easily undone, Biden’s planned declaration is rooted in a 72-year-old law that gives the White House wide discretion to permanently protect US waters from oil and gas leasing without explicitly empowering presidents to revoke the designations.

 

The move responds to pressure from congressional Democrats and environmental groups who have lobbied Biden to “maximize permanent protections” against offshore drilling, arguing the action is essential to safeguard vulnerable coastal communities, protect marine ecosystems from oil spills and fight climate change.

 

White House and Interior Department officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Biden administration officials have been considering the approach for more than two years, though their efforts intensified after Trump’s victory, as the outgoing president sought to enshrine new environmental measures before the end of his term. The fresh offshore protections are in line with similar recent Biden actions to protect areas from industrial mining and energy development, including a formal proposal issued Monday to thwart the sale of new oil, gas and geothermal leases in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains.

Biden has prioritized conservation while in office and is already on track to protect more US lands and waters than any other president, even as he faces mounting calls to expand that record with new national monuments safeguarding culturally significant land in California.

 

The full scope of Biden’s coming offshore protections wasn’t clear early Thursday, but the protected areas include waters considered critical to coastal resilience and the designation is designed to be targeted, said people familiar with the decision. Trump Challenge

Trump is expected to order a reversal of the protections, but it’s not clear he will be successful. During his first term in office, Trump sought to revoke former President Barack Obama’s order to protect more than 125 million acres (50.6 million hectares) of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, which was rejected by a federal district court in 2019.

 

Trump, himself, has actually used the same statute to block oil and gas leasing in waters near Florida and North Carolina in a bid to appeal to voters in the final weeks of the 2020 presidential campaign.

Supporters of the 1953 Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, which governs offshore oil and gas development, note that Congress gave presidents wide discretion to permanently protect waters from leasing, but it didn’t explicitly grant them the authority to undo those designations.

 

For decades, presidents have invoked the provision to preserve walrus feeding grounds, US Arctic waters and other sensitive marine resources, beginning with former President Dwight Eisenhower, who in 1960 created the Key Largo Coral Reef Preserve that remains protected today. Though presidents have modified decisions from their predecessors to exempt areas from oil leasing, courts have never validated a complete reversal — and until Trump, no president had even attempted one.

 

Biden has already curtailed new offshore oil and gas development opportunities in the short term with less enduring measures. His administration created a program for selling offshore leases that allows just three auctions over the next five years, a record low. However, Trump is expected to rewrite that leasing plan using an administrative process that could take at least a year, and Republican lawmakers are considering ways to expand offshore oil lease sales as a way to raise revenue to offset the cost of extending tax cuts.

 

Oil industry advocates have warned against restrictions, arguing the world will need fossil fuels for decades to come — and the US produces them more cleanly than other countries. Nearly a century after it was first drilled, the Gulf of Mexico remains a key source of US oil and gas, providing about 14% of domestic output today — enough that if it were a country, it would rank among the world’s top 12 oil producers.

The Biden administration is attempting to implement last-minute restrictions on oil and gas drilling in the west just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

 

On Monday, the Department of the Interior announced plans to pursue a 20-year ban on oil and gas leases in 264,000 acres of Nevada's Ruby Mountains.

 

The administration submitted an application to withdraw the acreage from any potential leasing, which initiated a two-year ban on new mineral leases in the area during the approval process. The proposal now heads into a 90-day public comment period, which will fall under the Trump administration.

 

"The Ruby Mountains are an iconic landscape with exceptional recreation opportunities and valuable fish and wildlife habitat worth preserving for the future," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. "Today’s action honors the voices of Tribal communities and conservation and sportsmen’s groups and marks another important step to protect a treasured landscape."

 

The Biden administration's lease limitation does not put restrictions on mining in the region.

 

During Trump's first administration, the Forest Service conducted a study to determine whether 54,000 acres could be leased for oil and gas drilling in the Ruby Mountains.

 

The proposal was eventually rejected in 2019 after the public comment period saw "thousands of comments from the local area, the state of Nevada, and from across the nation" opposing the idea, according to William Dunkelberger, the forest supervisor who signed the decision.

 

Jenna Padilla, the geologist for the Humboldt-Toiyabe Ruby Mountains ranger district at the time, said that geological surveys "show there is low to no potential for oil" in the region, the LA Times reported in 2018.

 

It is unclear whether the Trump administration will consider potential leases in the region, but such actions could face roadblocks following the Biden administration's new proposal.

So if a counties economic growth is harmed it can effect the bond rates of the country or so on local governments as well to.

 

So this where most people think you take money from another this is known as comers or more like a retail market atmosphere. Investment is the most important aspect this more like a business seeing a area ripe for growth and taking advantage of it. Say housing if a population is growing… say food and other stories in this way. This growth is mostly driven by need but the return on it is often by design…

US oil firm Apache has announced plans to exit the North Sea because the windfall tax has made its UK operations "uneconomic".

The Texas firm will cease all production at its UK assets by December 2029, “well ahead of what would have been an otherwise reasonable time frame".

In addition to criticising the UK’s Energy Profits Levy — otherwise known as a windfall tax — John Christmann, chief executive of Apache parent firm APA, said UK regulators issued new rules that will require “substantial new emissions control investments” on facilities that operate in the North Sea beyond 2029.

He said: “After six months of evaluation, we have concluded that the investment required to comply with these regulations… coupled with the onerous financial impact of the Energy Profits Levy makes production of hydrocarbons beyond the year 2029 uneconomic.”

Apache took control of the Forties field in 2003 but suspended all new drilling activity last year. The firm will run a “very limited capital programme” in the North Sea next year before those assets are ultimately decommissioned, Mr Christmann said.

In a statement, the firm added: "The onerous financial impact of the EPL, combined with the substantial investment that will be necessary to comply with regulatory requirements, makes production of hydrocarbons beyond 2029 uneconomic.

"Looking forward, our focus will be on maintaining asset safety and integrity as we prepare for the responsible decommissioning of our assets.”

The Energy Profits Levy (EPL) - the official name for the windfall tax - is a levy on profits made from extracting UK oil and gas.

In the recent Budget, Labour raised the levy to 38% - meaning the total tax rate on the companies is now 78% - and extended it by a further year to 2030.

Apache's announcement comes just days after Harbour Energy was reported to have put its stakes in the Armada, Everest, Lomond, Catcher, and Tolmount fields up for sale.

Russell Borthwick, chief executive at Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, urged the UK Government to take urgent action.

He said: "We have have been warning for almost two years now that the windfall tax would drive capital, investment and jobs away from the North Sea.

"The UK Government must now work with industry swiftly to devise a new progressive tax regime for the North Sea, where the tax rate increases as oil and gas prices rise and decreases when prices fall.

"This framework should be predictable, allowing the sector to make future investment plans with certainty and confidence.

"This successor regime cannot wait until beyond 2030, by which time significant damage could be done to our domestic energy industry and its workforce. It should be pursued immediately."

Samantha Schwab, the 21-year-old granddaughter of brokerage billionaire Charles Schwab, has been working in the Trump White House Office of Legislative Affairs.

The White House won’t say why Schwab was hired, or give details on her work for the Trump administration. HuffPost learned of Schwab’s job from a source, who shared correspondence between Schwab’s official White House email account and congressional offices.

The header on Schwab’s White House email address says “Volunteer” in parentheses after her name, suggesting she may not be a full-time staffer. She is not an official White House intern. This is what her email looks like:

It’s generally illegal for federal agencies to use unpaid labor, with a few notable exceptions. These include the prestigious (but unpaid) White House internship program, as well as a volunteer program to decorate the White House for holiday tours.

Schwab’s billionaire grandfather founded the eponymous brokerage firm in 1971 and contributed $1 million to Trump’s record-breaking inaugural fundraising committee. HuffPost contacted him for comment through his family foundation, but did not receive a reply.

Samantha Schwab attended the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland as part of the California delegation. She is an undergraduate at Stanford University in California, where a student directory lists her major as economics. Samantha Schwab would appear to be eligible for the White House internship program. But the first class of Trump White House interns doesn’t start until May 30. Applications were due in April, and Schwab has been at the legislative affairs office since at least March, according to her emails.

Schwab, reached by phone Tuesday, said she did not have time to talk, and asked HuffPost to call later. Subsequent calls were diverted to an operator, and messages were not returned. HuffPost also sent detailed questions about Schwab’s job to the White House, but did not receive a response.

Ethics experts said Schwab’s position raises a number of red flags, including the same issues Ivanka Trump encountered during her brief stint as a “volunteer” adviser to her father, the president.

Schwab’s “volunteer” position, and the administration’s secrecy about it, are “highly unusual and reeking of patronage,” said Richard Painter, who served as former President George W. Bush’s ethics czar. In order to address potential conflicts of interest, Schwab should formally agree to ethics rules for all White House employees, regardless of whether she is being paid, Painter added.

“If someone has a White House email and they’re coming into work every day and corresponding with congressional offices, then they are an employee,” Painter said. “Nobody can just go into a White House job and say they’re a volunteer and not be subject to ethics rules.”

The practice of giving jobs to relatives of important donors is hardly a new phenomenon in Washington. In 2013, then-President Barack Obama’s summer intern class Included children of billionaire campaign donor Steven Rattner and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.

But what’s new in the Trump administration is a widespread tolerance for conflicts of interest, worsened by a lack of transparency that includes Trump’s failure to disclose his tax returns and his refusal to make public White House visitor logs.

Schwab’s position also raises the question of whether it violates the Antideficiency Act, a law that prohibits the federal government from accepting volunteer services. The purpose of the law is to ensure that if the president wants to hire more people, he must ask Congress, which appropriates money for Executive Branch personnel.

“There’s a special exception made to the Antideficiency rules for education-based internships, like the White House internship program,” said Kathleen Clark, a law professor and government ethics expert at Washington University in St Louis. “But if you didn’t have the exception, what you’d have here is the Executive Branch using unpaid labor, which is not accountable to Congress.”

Cases like Schwab’s also reveal larger and more systemic ethics issues within the administration, said Alex Howard, of the nonprofit Sunlight Foundation.

“By deciding to lift the traditional caps on inaugural donations and accept unlimited amounts from each individual, Trump opened himself up to questions like this one,” Howard said in an interview.

Howard, a former HuffPost reporter, also emphasized how valuable working in the White House is for a young person’s career.

“The White House is the top of our executive branch, and it is unrivaled in terms of prestige, power and influence,” Howard said. “So the things [staffers] learn, and the connections they make are basically priceless.

“But when someone is given this incredibly valuable experience in secret, because of their family’s political contributions, it erodes the public trust in the entire government,” he said.

Federal authorities accuse the young soldier of participating in a cybercriminal ring that sold sensitive data, including alleged phone records of President-elect Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, on the black market.

The indictment, unsealed this week, reveals two counts of unlawful transfer of confidential phone records filed against Wagenius, according to KrebsonSecurity.
