Bondi's DOJ Defends 1934 Gun Law, Clashing With Trump's Pro-2A Agenda In Suppressor Case

The Department of Justice under Attorney General Pam Bondi is defending one of the most outdated and constitutionally suspect gun control measures still on the books: the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) and its restrictions on suppressors. In the Peterson case, now before the Fifth Circuit, DOJ has argued that NFA gun registration and other restrictions are valid despite acknowledging that suppressors fall within the Second Amendment’s protections.

 

The facts are simple. Peterson involved an individual who possessed an unregistered suppressor for home defense. Suppressors are widely used for lawful purposes: reducing noise at firing ranges, protecting hearing during hunting, and improving safety during home defense. With more than 3.5 million legally registered suppressors in the United States today, ATF data shows they are rarely used in crimes. In fact, there are fewer than 50 federal prosecutions annually involving suppressors.

 

By any objective measure, suppressors are in “common use” for lawful purposes.

 

Yet DOJ has defended the NFA’s registration requirements by reviving an argument borrowed from California’s standard capacity magazine ban case.

 

In briefs, the Department insisted that suppressors are “specially adaptable to criminal misuse.” By that logic, any tool that makes a firearm more effective—whether a scope, a magazine, or even the firearm itself—could be subjected to sweeping restrictions. The DOJ’s standard is not grounded in the text of the Second Amendment or in Supreme Court precedent. It is simply a policy preference disguised as constitutional analysis.

 

Justice Clarence Thomas warned against this very approach in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. The Court rejected “interest balancing” tests that allowed judges to weigh government interests against enumerated rights. The Second Amendment, the Court held, means what it says. If a firearm or accessory is commonly used for lawful purposes, it cannot be banned or restricted simply because the government believes criminals might misuse it.

 

Bondi’s DOJ has not embraced that principle. Instead, it has defended suppressor restrictions by adopting the same rationale that anti-gun litigators have advanced for years. The result is that under a pro-Second Amendment president who issued an executive order directing agencies to protect gun rights, DOJ is still fighting to preserve a Depression-era law written in 1934 to discourage ownership through taxes and registration paperwork.

A staffer for the Democrat Governor of Massachusetts has been fired after he was arrested on drug and gun charges.

 

Lamar Cook, who was a member of Gov. Maura Healey’s staff, was arrested after police executed a search warrant at his state office in Springfield.

 

During the search, authorities seized eight grams inside of his government office.

 

The now former Deputy Director of the governor’s western Massachusetts office has since been charged with cocaine trafficking and unlawful possession of a gun.

Exit polling shows the Democrats 66 (or D66) social liberal and progressive political party leading, ahead of the right (or as the MSM likes to say: "far right"). Per the latest:

 

The centrist liberals under Rob Jetten have taken a shock lead in the Dutch election, according to the main exit poll, two years after his party languished in fifth place in the last vote.

 

Jetten staged a remarkable campaign in recent weeks, and the Ipsos I&O exit poll suggests his D66 liberals have won 27 seats, two more than anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders who won the last election.

 

Although the final result is too close to call, Wilders conceded victory and Jetten told supporters "millions of Dutch people have turned a page", choosing positive politics.

 

Three other parties are close behind, including the conservative liberals, the left-wing Green-Labor party and the Christian Democrats.

 

Geert Wilders' Party for Freedom (PVV) is projected to win 25 seats. The election is expected to amount to a loss of 12 seats in the House of Representatives for PVV.

BREAKING: Per four senior DHS & Trump admin sources, a mass removal of ICE leadership around the country is underway, with up to 12 ICE field office chiefs being removed & reassigned in an effort to increase deportation numbers. I’m told the move is spearheaded by Corey Lewandowski, and a handful of the ICE Chiefs will likely be replaced by Border Patrol & CBP officials, some of whom will be hand-picked by aggressive & controversial Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino. I’m told some of the ICE leadership removed from their positions include the ICE Field Office Directors in:

 

– Los Angeles

– Phoenix

– Philadelphia

– Denver

– El Paso

– San Diego

– Seattle/Portland

– New Orleans

 

Border Patrol officials taking over ICE leadership positions would be extremely significant, as Border Patrol and ICE do different things, and I’ve done numerous ride-alongs/embeds with both.

 

Generally speaking, ICE typically conducts very targeted operations, largely going after criminal illegal aliens or those with deportation orders, but almost always knowing who they are targeting for arrest, often conducting surveillance to learn their schedules before and waiting hours before arresting them if needed.

 

Border Patrol, under Trump 2.0, while sometimes doing their own targeted operations, has been extremely aggressive and has been at the forefront of some of the most controversial immigration enforcement operations we’ve seen so far, carrying out roving patrols in Los Angeles, Chicago, etc, often at Home Depot, car washes, flea markets etc, leading to a handful of federal judges around the country issuing injunctions against them. A majority of the viral videos you see online are Border Patrol agents, including the use of a Trojan horse style Penske moving truck at a Los Angeles Home Depot, an operation organized by Bovino.

 

ICE often gets blamed for what Border Patrol does, as the media and activists often cannot tell the difference between federal agents, and everyone is called “ICE”. I’m told there are growing concerns about the political and PR fallout associated with some of the roving patrols Border Patrol is conducting as lawsuits continue to stack up and mid-terms approach next year.

 

I’m told there is significant friction within different wings of DHS and the administration, with Border Czar Tom Homan & ICE Director Todd Lyons preferring to prioritize targeting criminal aliens & the “worst of the worst” or those with deportation orders, while DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, Corey Lewandowski, and BP Commander Bovino prefer to use aggressive tactics to arrest anyone in the US illegally, including but not limited to criminals, to ramp up deportation numbers and achieve President Trump’s promises of mass deportations.

Although a peace agreement on Gaza was reached under US President Donald Trump’s leadership, its durability remains highly uncertain. A formal cease-fire and political arrangements do not mean that the root causes of the conflict have been resolved. Israel continues to insist on strict security guarantees and the retention of control over key areas, presenting this as essential to prevent the resumption of rocket attacks. The Palestinian side, however, views this not as peace, but as a pause imposed under US pressure – a temporary and unstable truce lacking any real progress toward normalizing Gaza’s status, rebuilding its economy, or easing the blockade. On the streets, this is perceived not as a historic breakthrough, but as yet another externally imposed intermission – short-lived and inherently fragile.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that Democrats would vote for Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-Mo.) bill to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amid the government shutdown.

 

“Today, tomorrow, if [Senate Majority Leader] John Thune [R-S.D.] would put it on the floor, it would pass overwhelmingly,” Schumer said at a press conference.

 

Hawley’s bill, the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025, would fund the program until the shutdown ends. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which administers the program, has warned that starting Saturday, millions of low-income people will not receive SNAP benefits.

 

The bill has 10 Republican co-sponsors: Sens. James Lankford (Okla.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Bernie Moreno (Ohio), Kevin Cramer (N.D.), Bill Cassidy (La.), Katie Britt (Ala.), Jon Husted (Ohio) and John Cornyn (Texas).

 

Thune has argued that Democrats should end the shutdown by voting for legislation approved by the House that would extend existing funding.

 

Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) introduced a dueling bill Wednesday, which would require the USDA to fund SNAP and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The entire Senate Democratic caucus has co-sponsored the legislation, titled the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act of 2025.

 

In fiscal 2024, roughly 41.7 million people received SNAP benefits monthly, according to the USDA. The federal government spent $99.8 billion on the program, amounting to roughly $187.20 per recipient per month.

 

Roughly 6.7 million people received WIC benefits in the last fiscal year, including about 41 percent of U.S. infants, according to the USDA. The program cost roughly $7.2 billion during that time frame.

 

People can receive SNAP and WIC benefits concurrently.

 

The USDA has said it will not use more than $5 billion in SNAP contingency funding that Congress allocated for emergency scenarios. Next month’s SNAP benefits are estimated to cost roughly $9.2 billion.

 

In a Friday memo, the USDA argued that the funding can only be utilized in the aftermath of unforeseen events, such as natural disasters. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins doubled down on Tuesday, telling CNN’s Boris Sanchez that her department cannot legally use the contingency funding to disburse November SNAP benefits to states.

 

That contradicts a since-deleted shutdown plan the USDA published Sept. 30, which stated the department is congressionally mandated to allocate SNAP benefits using the contingency funding during the lapse.

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) lost roughly 71% of its $468 million investment in a clean-energy and technology private equity fund - and won’t explain how. The losses highlight growing concerns about the pension giant’s private equity strategy, which relies heavily on opaque, illiquid investments and leaves taxpayers ultimately on the hook.

 

According to state records analyzed by the Center Square, the CalPERS Clean Energy & Technology Fund (CETF), launched in 2007, has seen its value fall from a total commitment of $468.4 million to $138 million as of March 31, 2025. That represents a loss of more than $330 million, even after paying $22 million in fees and costs to private equity managers.

 

CalPERS’ overall returns for fiscal 2024–2025 were 11.6%, with public equities returning 16.8% and private equity 14.3%. The similar performance between the two asset classes has raised questions about whether the complexity and cost of private equity are worth it.

 

“If you can get these kinds of returns on the public markets, why bother with all the complexities and the illiquidity involved in private equity?” said Marc Joffe, a public finance expert and visiting fellow at the California Policy Center, in an interview with The Center Square.

 

Joffe said the CETF losses underscore “the combined dangers of private equity and ESG investment,” describing it as an opaque strategy that appears driven by “green credentials” rather than returns. “CalPERS would be better off focusing on a diverse portfolio of publicly traded equities to get better long-term returns,” he said.

The ministry said the decision was expected given changes in Washington's priorities, and that roughly 1,000 U.S. troops would continue to be stationed in Romania. Between 1,000 and 1,200 U.S. troops rotated out a month ago and will not be replaced, it said in a statement.

Washington's European allies have been told previously by the administration of President Donald Trump that they will need to take more responsibility for their own security as the United States focuses more on its own borders and on the Indo-Pacific region.

REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS OPPOSE THE MOVE

The U.S. military said the decision not to replace departing American troops in Romania was not "an American withdrawal from Europe or a signal of lessened commitment to NATO".

But in a rare move, the top U.S. Republican lawmakers on the Senate and House Armed Services Committees slammed the move.

"We strongly oppose the decision not to maintain the rotational U.S. brigade in Romania," the joint statement said, adding that the lawmakers were seeking clarification from the Pentagon.

Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu told a news conference that the brigade had troops in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia.

He said Bucharest's ties with Washington remained strong and that the permanent allied presence remained "considerable", at around 3,500 NATO troops including U.S. soldiers.

"It is enough for our needs," Mosteanu said. "The expectation of having entire foreign armies here to defend us is unrealistic. We will continue to invest in the Romanian army."

He said Romania had received an advanced air defence system from Washington which would enhance the country's ability to protect itself against drones breaching its airspace.

NATO SAYS ALLIANCE IN CLOSE CONTACT

The EU and NATO state shares a 650 km (400 mile) land border with Ukraine and has seen Russian drones breach its airspace more than 20 times over the last two years, as well as mines floating in the Black Sea across key trade and energy routes.

A NATO official said the alliance was in close contact about the deployment of its forces, adding that adjustments to U.S. deployments were not unusual.

Slovakia's defence ministry said the decision not to replace the rotating brigade only affected Romania and that Slovakia's defence was provided by its Spain-led multinational NATO brigade.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told Sky that the process of the U.S. shifting its focus had started under President Barack Obama. "The U.S. is concerned about competition with China, and Europe must guarantee its own defence," he said.

US Intelligence Offered Maduro's Pilot Huge Reward To Divert Plane To Awaiting Federal Agents

 

At a moment that hawkish US lawmakers are already saying "Maduro's days are numbered" - some of US intelligence's dirty tricks toward accomplishing regime change in Venezuela have been revealed.

 

According to a fresh and detailed Associated Press report, a US federal agent covertly tried to recruit Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's personal pilot in a scheme to nab the Venezuelan leader and bring him to the United States, where he would face drug smuggling charges and even potential 'terrorism'-related charges.

 

Three current and former US officials, as well as a Venezuelan opposition figure, said that Homeland Security agent Edwin Lopez met Maduro's pilot, General Bitner Villegas, in the Dominican Republic in 2024.

 

"In exchange, the agent told the pilot in a clandestine meeting, the aviator would be made a very rich man," the AP says, and there was exchange of contact information.

 

The pilot was offered money and protection for what would be a very daring and risky operation if he were to agree to it. "All he had to do was surreptitiously divert the Venezuelan president’s plane to a place where U.S. authorities could nab the strongman," the report says.

 

Gen. Villegas was encouraged to "be Venezuela’s hero", and at one point could have possibly received up to $50 million - which is the amount of a published DOJ reward for Maduro's capture - if he had gone though with accomplishing the scheme.

 

The AP notes that the story has been revealed soon on the heels of President Trump recently approving the return of CIA covert operations to Venezuela, to seek to undermine Caracas.

 

However, the saga illustrates the "slapdash fashion" in which such intel operations have been carried out, the report explains:

 

The untold, intrigue-filled saga of how Lopez tried to flip the pilot has all the elements of a Cold War spy thriller — luxury private jets, a secret meeting at an airport hangar, high-stakes diplomacy and the delicate wooing of a key Maduro lieutenant. There was even a final machination aimed at rattling the Venezuelan president about the pilot’s true loyalties.

 

More broadly, the scheme reveals the extent — and often slapdash fashion — to which the U.S. has for years sought to topple Maduro, who it blames for destroying the oil-rich nation’s democracy while providing a lifeline to drug traffickers, terrorist groups and communist-run Cuba.

 

In the end Villegas rejected cooperating with the US covert plot to fly Maduro into the hands of US federal agents. The reality is he may have been found out before agreeing, or else could have been caught in the very act of seeking to fly to an unauthorized place with the Venezuelan president. Drastically changing a flight path while the president was aboard would have certainly raised deep suspicion among Maduro's security detail.
