Iran Security Alert – Land Border Crossings (January 12, 2026)

Location: Iran, countrywide

 

Event: Protests across Iran are escalating and may turn violent, resulting in arrests and injuries. Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages are ongoing. The Government of Iran has restricted access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran, with several suspending service until Friday, January 16.

 

U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe to do so, consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye.

 

Actions to Take:

 

Leave Iran now. Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on U.S. government help.

If you cannot leave, find a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items.

Avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings.

Monitor local media for breaking news. Be prepared to adjust your plans.

Keep your phone charged and maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of your status.

Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest updates on security in Iran.

 

If You Plan to Leave Iran:

 

U.S.-Iranian dual nationals must exit Iran on Iranian passports. The Iranian government does not recognize dual nationality and will treat U.S.-Iranian dual nationals solely as Iranian citizens. U.S. nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran. Showing a U.S. passport or demonstrating connections to the United States can be reason enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone.

 

The U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart using the following options. You should leave only if you believe it is safe to do so.

 

As of Monday, January 12, the Armenian land border at Agarak/Norduz remains open. U.S. citizens entering Armenia from Iran need a valid U.S. passport and may stay for up to 180 days visa-free. U.S. citizens who require assistance should send the following to the U.S. Embassy Yerevan American Citizens Services Unit at ACSYerevan@state.gov:

 

Name, DOB, passport information (number and dates of issue/expiration), border crossing, and a photograph of the passport biodata page

 

As of Monday, January 12, Turkish land border crossings with Iran remain open (Gürbulak/Bazargan, Kapıköy/Razi, and Esendere/Serow). For U.S. citizens seeking to depart Iran by land via these border gates:

 

U.S.-Iranian dual nationals who plan to enter Türkiye on Iranian or Turkish passports do not require advance approval. U.S. citizens who plan to enter Türkiye using their U.S. passports and those who lack a valid travel document should send the following to the U.S. Embassy Ankara American Citizens Services Unit at Ankara-ACS@state.gov:

 

Name, DOB, passport information (number and dates of issue/expiration), border crossing, and a photograph of the passport biodata page

 

As of Monday, January 12, Turkmenistan’s land borders are open, but U.S. citizens need special authorization from the Government of Turkmenistan before approaching the border. U.S. Embassy Ashgabat must facilitate this approval. U.S. citizens who plan to request entry into Turkmenistan should send the following to the U.S. Embassy Ashgabat American Citizens Services Unit at AshgabatUScitizen@state.gov:

U.S. citizens with an urgent need to depart Iran via Azerbaijan should be aware that entry into Azerbaijan from Iran has been restricted for U.S. citizens during periods of heightened tension, such as the June 2025 conflict between Iran and Israel. U.S. citizens should consider alternative routes for departure from Iran. U.S. citizens should not travel to Afghanistan, Iraq, or the Pakistan-Iran border area.

 

The U.S. government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Swiss government, acting through its embassy in Tehran, serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests in Iran.

If you’ve only paid attention to the legacy media over the past few days, you probably know more about Renee Good’s poetry than you do about the actions that led to her tragic death last Wednesday. After refusing federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers’ commands to get out of her car, which she had used to impede agents’ access to a neighborhood road, Good was caught on video accelerating her SUV toward one agent with another hanging on her door. The agent in front of her vehicle fatally shot her as the car appeared to hit him.

 

The corporate press, with help from the Democrats to whom they run for comment, portrayed Good as a victim of spontaneous violence, a “woman [who] drops her kid off at school, not involved in protest activity or anything, [but] seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.” The more details emerged, the fewer of those claims turned out to be true.

  1. Good Was Just Driving ‘Past’ Agents

 

A narrative quickly formed insisting that Good’s vehicle wasn’t pointed at the ICE agents at all but was directed away from them.

 

Someone at Axios Twin Cities approved a headline on Wednesday that said “ICE shoots, kills person in Minneapolis in vehicle that drove past agents.” The story’s lede was even worse: it claimed the ICE agent “shot and killed a 37-year-old woman who was in a vehicle that drove close to federal agents” (emphasis added).

 

In similar fashion, The Washington Post ran a headline at the top of its online front page Thursday morning that claimed the agent “was not in the vehicle’s path” when he fired his handgun. After criticism, the Post changed the headline to say the agent “fired at driver as vehicle veered past him,” without a correction notice. (The same article frames Good’s acceleration toward the agent as navigating “in the correct direction of traffic on the one-way street.”)

 

But regardless of whether Good intended to hit the officer, it’s obvious from video footage that from the officer’s visual perspective, her car was aimed directly at him. Multiple videos appear to show her vehicle actually hitting him — which would make the Post’s claim that he was “not in the vehicle’s path” something of an impossibility.

  1. Agent Was ‘Knocked Backward But Not Hit’

 

PBS had perhaps the most baffling description, saying the agent “appears to be knocked backward but not hit.”

 

A local ABC affiliate said there were “several feet of separation between the SUV and the ICE agent” and “No ICE agents appeared to be hit.”

 

But multiple videos of the event — including one filmed by the agent himself — appear to show the vehicle come into contact with the officer. The agent’s father also confirmed to media that his son had been hit by Good’s vehicle.

  1. Good’s Car Was in Reverse

 

Multiple news outlets used deceptive phrasing to imply that Good was backing away from the officers, rather than accelerating toward them, when she was shot. The Washington Post falsely stated that the agent was “shooting … as the driver reverses and pulls away.” (That bit of reporting came under the headline: “Woman killed by ICE in Minneapolis was a mother of 3 and a poet.”)

 

The Economist pulled a similar stunt, claiming Good “reversed, and tried to drive away” when she was shot. Video footage clearly shows she was rapidly accelerating toward agents when she was killed.

  1. Good Just Happened to Be There After School Drop-Off

 

People Magazine claimed Good “Had Just Dropped 6-Year-Old Off at School When She Encountered ICE,” as if she had accidentally ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Guardian said she “was driving home with her partner when they encountered a group of ICE agents on a snowy street,” citing an AP interview with Good’s ex-husband. The ex-husband also told the AP she was “no activist,” a claim that was quickly repeated.

 

But reporting by the New York Post on Thursday indicated Good was part of an activist group dubbed “ICE Watch,” which the Post described as “dedicated to disrupting ICE raids” in Minneapolis. A mother from the school where Good’s child attends told the Post that Good “was trained against these ICE agents — what to do, what not to do, it’s a very thorough training.”

 

Another video showed Good’s vehicle blocking the street minutes before the altercation, further disproving the claim that she did not intend to obstruct ICE operations.

It’s impossible to read minds, but that didn’t stop members of the media from speculating that Good lurched her vehicle forward in a state of innocent panic.

FBI Director Kash Patel revealed Monday that he had fired the “corrupt” FBI agents involved in the bureau’s anti-Trump Arctic Frost investigation who had “weaponized” the law enforcement agency after President Donald Trump on Monday shared new revelations unearthed by Just the News.

 

An FBI supervisor who openly opposed Trump on social media played a crucial role in igniting the controversial Arctic Frost probe in 2022 related to January 6, with the bureau special agent pressing to add the former president as a formal subject of the investigation and circulating articles from liberal activists and leftwing news sources to make his case, according to evidence recently turned over to Congress and published by Just the News over the weekend.

 

“These FBI Agents are total Scum, in their own way no better than the insurrectionists in Portland, Minnesota, Los Angeles, etc. Kash better get them out, NOW!” Trump said in a Monday post on his Truth Social account. “Radical Left Lunatics put in by the ‘Auto Pen’ [Biden] and Obama!”

 

Patel quickly responded with a Truth Social post of his own.

 

“Thank you Mr. President. Under your leadership, this FBI found the corrupt actors and terminated their employment last year,” the FBI director said. “America voted for the end of weaponized law enforcement, and that’s what we are delivering.”

 

FBI Special Agent Timothy Thibault, who left his role as the assistant agent in charge of its Washington field office in August 2022 after his anti-Trump social posts became public, organized the initial electronic communication that authorized the start of the Arctic Frost probe.

 

He also circulated articles and podcasts by email from such anti-Trump outlets as Just Security, NPR, the Daily Beast, and The Washington Post, pushing for a criminal probe of Trump related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, the memos published by Just the News show.

 

When Thibault's colleagues originally drafted the investigation's launch document to focus on the Trump campaign and affiliated and still unknown subjects, "Add DJT" was scribbled onto the draft memo. Emails indicate Thibault was pushing to add Trump to the investigative launch document.

 

Revelations include emails from 2022 where Thibault shared articles and podcasts critical of Trump, including a prosecution-style memo authored by a former Obama DOJ official.

 

Thibault also sought to promote media coverage from outlets with left-leaning perspectives, such as NPR, as well as podcasts produced by The Daily Beast. The focus of these articles were Trump’s alleged crimes and efforts to overturn the election.

 

An unearthed email from April 2022 showed Thibault approving the opening of Arctic Frost.

 

These revelations continue to put the spotlight on Thibault, whom Republicans argue showed extreme anti-Trump bias, demonstrated a willingness to target Trump early in his first term, attempted to slow walk or block the FBI’s investigation into Hunter Biden, and in April 2022 helped spark the Arctic Frost investigation — later carried on by special counsel Jack Smith — which led to criminal charges against Trump related to the Capitol riot.

According to reporting from the Associated Press the telephone call lasted approximately 15 minutes; however, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called it “a very good conversation.”

 

(AP) “Sheinbaum said the two leaders did not speak about Cuba, which Trump threatened Sunday. Mexico is an important ally of the island nation, including selling it oil that it will need even more desperately now that the Trump administration says it will not allow any more oil shipments from Venezuela to Cuba.”

 

According to the AP report, President Trump again told President Sheinbaum that he was ready to support Mexico with U.S. law enforcement should she decide to take on the cartels. Sheinbaum again said that Mexico did not need the U.S. help and progress was being made.

 

“We told [President Trump], so far it’s going very well, it’s not necessary, and furthermore there is Mexico’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and he understood,” Sheinbaum is reported as saying, which, if you think about it, is really quite an alarming statement even within a brief phone call.

 

When asked about combatting cartel influence, “so far it’s going well” is not exactly confidence inspiring. Within the answer itself is an admission the Mexican government has an issue with cartel control. – AP REPORT HERE

 

Saying they have it under control is an admission there is something that needs to be controlled. Apparently, success on this issue in Mexico is defined as, “a significant drop in homicides, falling U.S. fentanyl seizures and fentanyl overdose deaths.”

Buy Greenland? Take It? Why? An Old Pact Already Gives Trump a Free Hand. 1/2

Analysts say the Cold War agreement allows the president to increase the American military presence almost at will.

President Trump has ridiculed Denmark’s dog sled teams in Greenland.

He has cited mysterious Chinese and Russian ships prowling off the coast.

He seems increasingly fixated on the idea that the United States should take over this gigantic icebound island, with one official saying the president wants to buy it and another suggesting that the United States could simply take it. Just a few days ago, Mr. Trump said: “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security.”

But the question is: Does the United States even need to buy Greenland — or do something more drastic — to accomplish all of Mr. Trump’s goals?

Under a little-known Cold War agreement, the United States already enjoys sweeping military access in Greenland. Right now, the United States has one base in a very remote corner of the island. But the agreement allows it to “construct, install, maintain, and operate” military bases across Greenland, “house personnel” and “control landings, takeoffs, anchorages, moorings, movements, and operation of ships, aircraft, and waterborne craft.”

It was signed in 1951 by the United States and Denmark, which colonized Greenland more than 300 years ago and still controls some of its affairs.

“The U.S. has such a free hand in Greenland that it can pretty much do what it wants,” said Mikkel Runge Olesen, a researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Copenhagen. “I have a very hard time seeing that the U.S. couldn’t get pretty much everything it wanted,” he said, adding, “if it just asked nicely.”But buying Greenland — something that Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers on Tuesday was Mr. Trump’s latest plan — is a different question.

Greenland does not want to be bought by anyone — especially not the United States.And Denmark does not have the authority to sell it, Dr. Olesen said.“It is impossible,” he said.

In the past, Denmark would have been the decider.In 1946, it refused the Truman administration’s offer of $100 million in gold.

Today, things are different. Greenlanders now have the right to hold a referendum on independence and Danish officials have said it’s up to the island’s 57,000 inhabitants to decide their future. A poll last year found 85 percent of residents opposed the idea of an American takeover. Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has repeatedly scoffed at the idea of being bought, saying this past week, “Our country is not for sale.”

The relatively short, straightforward defense agreement between the United States and Denmark was updated in 2004 to include Greenland’s semiautonomous government, giving it a say in how American military operations might affect the local population. The roots of the agreement go back to a partnership forged during World War II.

At that time, Denmark was occupied by the Nazis. Its ambassador in Washington, cut off from Copenhagen, took it upon himself to strike a defense agreement for Greenland with the United States. (The island is part of North America, along the Arctic Ocean and close to Canada’s coast.)

The fear was that Nazis could use Greenland as a steppingstone to America. The Germans had already established small meteorological bases on the island’s east coast and relayed information for battles in Europe. American troops eventually ousted them and established more than a dozen bases there with thousands of troops, landing strips and other military facilities.

After World War II, the United States continued to run some bases and a string of early warning radar sites. As the Cold War wound down, the United States closed all of them except one. It’s now called the Pittufik Space Base and helps track missiles crossing the North Pole.The Danes have a light presence, too: a few hundred troops, including special forces that use dog sleds to conduct long-range patrols. In recent months, the Danish government has vowed to upgrade its bases and increase surveillance.

After American special forces captured Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, from a safehouse last week, Mr. Trump seemed emboldened. Stephen Miller, a top aide, then claimed that Greenland should belong to the United States and that “nobody’s going to fight the United States” over it. Danish and Greenlandic anxiety skyrocketed.

On Tuesday night, Danish and Greenlandic leaders asked to meet with Mr. Rubio, according to Greenland’s foreign minister. It’s not clear if or when that might happen. (Guaranteed Denmark doesn’t want to take care of them, and they don’t. They’d love the US to take it, after the fiasco of Ukraine and being drained by the BS)

Tensions between Mr. Trump and Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, have been steadily rising, as Mr. Trump pushes to “get” Greenland, as he puts it, while Ms. Frederiksen refuses to kowtow to him.Just a few days ago, Ms. Frederiksen cited the 1951 agreement, saying, “We already have a defense agreement between the Kingdom and the United States today, which gives the United States wide access to Greenland.” She urged the United States “to stop the threats” and said an American attack on Greenland would mean the end of the international world order.

European leaders issued their own statement on Tuesday, also citing the 1951 agreement and saying, “Greenland belongs to its people.”

Analysts said that if the United States tried to use the defense pact as a fig leaf to send in a lot of troops and try to occupy Greenland, that wouldn’t be legal either. According to the 2004 amendment, the United States is supposed to consult with Denmark and Greenland before it makes “any significant changes” in its military operations on the island. The 2004 amendment, which was signed by Gen. Colin L. Powell, who was then the secretary of state, explicitly recognizes Greenland as “an equal part of the Kingdom of Denmark.”

Peter Ernstved Rasmussen, a Danish defense analyst, said that in practice,if American forces made reasonable requests, “the U.S. would always get a yes.”

“It is a courtesy formula,” he said. “If the U.S. wanted to act without asking, it could simply inform Denmark that it is building a base, an airfield or a port.”That’s what infuriates longtime Danish political experts. If Mr. Trump wanted to beef up Greenland’s security right now, he could. But there has been no such official American request, said Jens Adser Sorensen, a former senior official in Denmark’s Parliament.

 

“Why don’t you use the mechanism of the defense agreement if you’re so worried about the security situation?” he said, adding: “The framework is there. It’s in place.”

But Greenland’s strategic location is not the only thing that has attracted Mr. Trump’s inner circle. The enormous island has another draw: critical minerals, loads of them, buried under the ice. Here, too, analysts say, the United States doesn’t need to take over the island to get them.Greenlanders have said they are open to doing business — with just about anyone

Secret Service Investigating Death Threat Against JD Vance Made by DJ at UMass Lowell Radio Station

 

The disturbing post, made on the leftist social media platform Bluesky, read: “It’s simple, we kill JD Vance.”

 

The individual behind the Bluesky account hanslopez.bsky.social identified himself as a host on WUML (91.5 FM), a radio station funded by UMass Lowell and operated by students and community volunteers.

 

Founded in 1952, WUML broadcasts locally and online, positioning itself as a voice for alternative music and progressive viewpoints.

 

The DJ, described as a UMass Lowell alumnus, posted the threat in response to another user’s claim that “JD VANCE THINKS BRITAIN & FRANCE ARE AMERICAS [sic] LIKELY ENEMIES.”

 

After learning about the post, UMass Lowell police swiftly reported it to the FBI, Secret Service, and Haverhill Police Department, the DJ’s reported hometown, for investigation.

 

Authorities determined there was no immediate threat, but the investigation continues.

 

The DJ has since resigned from his volunteer position at WUML, and the post was deleted from Bluesky.

 

UMass Lowell issued a statement condemning the threat, claiming that it takes “seriously any threat of violence involving our community.”

 

“UMass Lowell police promptly coordinated with the FBI, Secret Service and Haverhill police the same day to ensure an appropriate response,” the university said. “Contact was made with the individual in question, and the necessary assessments were conducted in collaboration with federal partners. Authorities confirmed there was no immediate threat.”

 

“UMass Lowell takes seriously any threat of violence involving our community. Statements such as the post in question are inconsistent with the values of our democracy and our university,” the statement added, according to a report from the New York Post. “The individual in question has since resigned from his volunteer role at WUML and removed the post from his Bluesky account.”

 

No arrests have been reported.

The Ten Commandments, fundamental to both Judaism and Christianity, are credited with influencing Western values and are the basis for laws against killing, theft, adultery, and perjury.

 

Martin believes public schools have ignored the significance of foundational works such as the Ten Commandments and their role in preserving “our democratic Republic for future generations.”

 

She said she is retiring this month, fed up in general with a public education system that she feels has failed students.

 

As a board member of Innovative Teachers of Texas, an alternative to liberal teacher unions, Martin hopes to spend her time establishing a Christian classical school.

 

Christopher Rhoades, a minister and math teacher in the Alvin Independent School District south of Houston, told The Epoch Times he believes the law is a positive change but worries it could open Pandora’s box.

 

“I mean, it definitely returns us to a point of values,” he said. “You know, my concern is always with whatever precedent is set. What does it open the door to that I wouldn’t like if someone else was in power?”

In a piece published late Saturday, the Mail reports Trump has asked the Joint Special Operations Command to come up with an invasion plan, but the joint chiefs are resisting because they believe an invasion would be illegal and lack congressional support.

 

“The generals think Trump’s Greenland plan is crazy and illegal,” an unnamed diplomatic source told the Mail. “So they are trying to deflect him with other major military operations. They say it’s like dealing with a five-year-old.”

 

Trump’s pursuit of Greenland has been met with heavy resistance across the NATO alliance, particularly from Denmark, which controls Greenland.

 

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen has warned that a U.S. attack on Greenland would result in the end of NATO.

 

But the Mail piece suggests that could be Trump’s true aim. The Mail cited a diplomatic cable which speculated about Trump’s modus operandi.

 

“Since Congress would not allow Trump to exit NATO, occupying Greenland could force the Europeans to abandon NATO,” the cable said, according to the Mail. “If Trump wants to end NATO, this might be the most convenient way to do it.”

Despite obstacles, several cases involving minors with gender dysphoria are headed to trial this year.

 

Young people who used to identify as transgender have filed dozens of lawsuits in the past few years, but have yet to win a verdict in their favor.

 

They are known as “detransitioners,” those who regret changing their gender identity, often after making irreversible changes to their bodies via medication and surgery on the advice of medical professionals.

 

This year, several cases that have survived dismissal and arbitration, are making their way into courtrooms across the country.

 

​These cases face obstacles, including statutes of limitations, caps on medical malpractice awards, and huge legal bills for cases that can drag on for years.

 

​One case in New York, scheduled to go to trial this week, involves a then 16-year-old girl who thought she was a male and underwent a double mastectomy in December 2019, according to court documents. She has since detransitioned.

 

The case, Fox Varian vs. Kenneth Einhorn et. al, was filed in the Westchester County Supreme Court in 2023 against the teenager’s therapist and doctor and the medical facilities involved.

 

​The significance of the lawsuit is apparent to attorneys at Fiedler Deutsch, an experienced New York law firm representing the detransitioner in the medical malpractice suit.

 

​It “may be the first case of its kind in the nation to go to trial,” the firm’s website noted in an April 2025 post titled: “Understanding Detransition Cases: Legal Recourse for Minors Impacted by Gender-Affirming Care.”

​Medical professionals involved in the case are accused of negligence and causing pain, suffering, and mental anguish “of a permanent nature” to the plaintiff, formerly known as Isabella Basile, according to court documents.

 

​Defendants allegedly failed to inform the teen of “the risks, hazards, and alternatives” involved in the medical procedures she underwent, according to the lawsuit.

 

​Defendants have denied any wrongdoing, saying in court documents that at the time of surgery, “the plaintiff still identified as a male, was happy without breasts, and did not regret her decision.”

 

​Neither the defendant’s nor the plaintiff’s lawyers wished to comment on the case when contacted by The Epoch Times.

China seeks access to the Arctic’s potentially vast natural resources, including oil, gas, and minerals, even though China is not among the eight Arctic countries that control territory in the region. Beijing seeks to normalize more direct and efficient maritime shipping routes to Russia and other Northern Hemisphere areas, as a way to fuel its economic growth and energy security and reduce its dependence on Middle East energy. China has gradually increased engagement with Greenland mainly through mining projects, infrastructure development, and scientific research projects.
