Corbyn blasts May Brexit talks β€˜stunt’, as activists applaud new referendum talk

Jeremy Corbyn has blasted Theresa May’s offer of cross-party Brexit talks as a β€œstunt” – as he was applauded by Labour supporters for saying that a second referendum was still an option.

 

In front of a crowd of around 200 activists in Hastings, he said the British Prime Minister had made no β€œserious attempt to engage with the new reality that is needed” to get a Withdrawal Agreement through Parliament.

 

In a direct message to Mrs May, Mr Corbyn said: β€œTake no-deal off the table now please, Prime Minister.”

 

He reiterated Labour’s preference for a general election and a Brexit deal on its terms, including a permanent customs union, close links to the single market and protections for workers and the environment.

But, to clapping from the floor, he added: β€œIf the Government remains intransigent, if support for Labour’s alternative is blocked for party advantage and the country is facing the potential disaster of no-deal, our duty will then be to look at other options which we set out in our confidence motion, including that of a public vote.”

 

However, taking questions after his speech at the venue on Hastings’ seafront, he left open the question of which side Labour would campaign on in a public vote.

 

β€œIf a second referendum should take place, then obviously the party will decide what role we will play in that and what our view would be,” he said.

 

β€œBut I can’t really go along with the idea it should simply be a re-run of what happened in 2016. There has to be a discussion about the options that we put forward and we’ve put forward the three options that I’ve outlined.”

Mr Corbyn is now the only Westminster party leader who has not held discussions with Mrs May, after she held out an olive branch across the Commons on Wednesday.

 

Speaking in the heart of an East Sussex constituency that voted 55%-45% in favour of Leave in 2016, he said: β€œLast night’s offer of talks with party leaders turned out to be simply a stunt, not the serious attempt to engage with the new reality that is needed.”

 

He added: β€œI say to the Prime Minister again: I am quite happy to talk but the starting point for any talks about Brexit must be that the threat of a disastrous no-deal outcome is ruled out, taken off the table, and we can talk about the future of the plans that we will put forward and the future relationship with Europe.”

Head of Pasteur Institute of Iran (a major pharmaceutical research and innovation center) along with representatives from Export Guarantee Fund of Iran and Foreign Ministry officials are accompanying deputy health minister in his trip to Havana.

 

In a related front, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani cabled a message to his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel on January 01, highlighting the need for the expansion of bilateral relations between Tehran and Havana.

 

I hope that Iran and Cuba will expand their mutual cooperation in the future," President Rouhani said in his message, congratulating his Cuban counterpart on the occasion of the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

Will I get paid?

 

Yes. President Donald Trump signed the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act into law on Jan. 16. It ensures that both furloughed and excepted federal employees receive back pay after the government shutdown ends. It also specifies that federal payroll providers begin to process checks as soon as the lapse in appropriations ends, regardless of the next scheduled pay date.

By law, federal employees can’t receive any pay for work done during a government shutdown until the lapse in appropriations ends.

 

Excepted employees who are required to work during a shutdown will eventually get paid, but not until after the shutdown ends. Non-excepted employees who are furloughed aren’t guaranteed pay, but they have received it after shutdowns in the recent past.

 

Federal contractors, however, are in a different boat. Congress has no real mechanism to ensure the federal contracting community gets paid during a government shutdown. Individual companies can decide to pay their contractor-employees when the shutdown ends, but again, there’s no guarantee.

 

A group of Senate Democrats has introduced legislation that would ensure low-wage federal contractors receive back pay during this shutdown. But no similar legislation has ever cleared Congress before.

 

When will I get paid?

 

At this point, a definitive or ballpark estimate is tough to approximate. The legislation that Trump signed into law specifies that payroll providers work as quickly as possible to send out checks, regardless of the next scheduled pay period.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump's former fixer and personal attorney Michael Cohen paid a technology expert to rig online polls in Trump's favor, according to The Wall Street Journal.

 

John Gauger, the owner of Red Finch Solutions and chief information officer at Liberty University, said Cohen offered him $50,000 to rig two online polls, the Journal reported Thursday, citing a government document and a person familiar with the matter.

 

Cohen handed Gauger a Walmart bag loaded with about $12,000 in cash during a 2015 meeting at Cohen's Trump Organization office, Gauger said. But he never paid him the remainder of the promised $50,000, the Journal said.

 

Cohen denied giving Gauger cash. "All monies paid to Mr. Gauger were by check," he said, according to the Journal.

 

Gauger did not appear to have much success at moving the needle in the polls he was paid to manipulate. In January 2014, Cohen asked Gauger to sway a CNBC online poll on the top American business leaders with a program that could vote for Trump repeatedly, the Journal report said. But Trump did not break into the top 100.

 

In February 2015, Cohen asked Gauger to boost Trump in a Drudge Report poll on potential 2016 Republican presidential candidates, according to Gauger. Trump ended up coming in fifth with 5 percent of the vote.

 

Cohen also asked Gauger to create a Twitter account with the handle @WomenForCohen that would be run by a female friend of Gauger's to portray Cohen as a "sex symbol" and hype his statements in favor of Trump's presidential campaign, the Journal reported. The account was created in May 2016 and remains active.

 

"We can't wait!!! You will do a fantastic job! You are amazing leader &speaker #ThanksDonald #AmericaFirst," reads a Dec. 28, 2016 tweet, the last one posted to the account. That tweet was in response to one from Cohen's announcing he would be an honoree at one of the pre-inaugural balls after Trump's election victory.

Morgan Stanley Tumbles Following Huge Revenue, FICC Miss

 

After 5 out of 5 big investment banks reported disappointing FICC revenue results, hopes that Morgan Stanley would break the trend when it reported Q4 earnings this morning were subdued at best, and for good reason: moments ago the bank reported Q4 FICC revenue of just $564MM, a huge miss to the $823MM consensus expectation and a whopping 30% drop Y/Y which was also the biggest fixed income revenue drop on Wall Street.

 

The result was so bad, one has to go back to 2015 to find a lower fixed income print.

Had that been all, the bank may have scraped through unscathed like so many of its peers, but whereas other banks managed to cover up for FICC disappointment with the outperformance of other groups, Morgan Stanley did not, and as a result Q4 revenue printed at just $8.55BN, far below the $9.35BN expected and in fact below the lowest estimate in the range of forecasts of $8.97BN to $10.17BN.

 

This also resulted in a painful EPS miss, with the company reported 73 cents in Q4 EPS (thanks to a 16.2% effective tax rate), far below the 89 cents expected, a number which excluded a 7 cent per share tax benefit. And while net income more than doubled to $1.53 billion from $643 million a year earlier, that is because the firm took a $1 billion charge related to the U.S. tax overhaul last year.

 

So alas whereas other banks could at least pretend the core business is doing well, MS had no such luxury, especially since equity sales and trading revenue of $1.93BN also missed expectations of $2.01BN; the number was "essentially unchanged from a year ago reflecting higher revenues in the financing business, partially offset by lower results in execution services." As for the FICC plunge, the bank said that this is due to "unfavorable market making conditions that resulted from significant credit spread widening and volatile rate movements."

 

The company's key Wealth Management group also disappointed, reporting pre-tax income from continuing operations of $1.0 billion compared with $1.2 billion a year ago. Net revenues for the current quarter were $4.1 billion compared with $4.4 billion a year ago principally driven by losses related to investments associated with certain employee deferred compensation plans. Even so, total client assets were $2.3 trillion and client assets in fee-based accounts were $1.0 trillion at the end of the quarter.

 

There was a silver lining in the bank's investment banking revenue of $1.49BN which while unchanged from a year ago, was better than the $1.35BN expected.

 

Advisory revenues of $734 million increased from $522 million a year ago on higher levels of completed M&A activity across all regions.

Equity underwriting revenues of $323 million decreased from $416 million a year ago reflecting lower revenues primarily on IPOs.

Fixed income underwriting revenues of $360 million decreased from $499 million a year ago driven by lower bond and loan issuances.

 

Alas, this was not enough to offset the broader gloom. To be sure, the bank tried to make up for the drop in revenue by slashing expenses, as compensation costs of $3.8 billion decreased from $4.3 billion a year ago on lower net revenues, partially offset by

a reduction in the portion of discretionary incentive compensation subject to deferral (non-compensation expenses of $2.9 billion increased from $2.8 billion a year ago).

 

Of course, CEO James Gorman was optimistic, saying that "In 2018 we achieved record revenues and earnings, and growth across each of our business segments – despite a challenging fourth quarter. We delivered higher annual returns, producing an ROE of 11.8% and ROTCE of 13.5%, as we continued to invest in our businesses. While the global environment remains uncertain, our franchise is strong and we are well positioned to pursue growth opportunities and serve our clients."

 

Yet after the first truly dreadful bank results of the earnings season the market disagreed, and MS stock, which is a 0.2% contributors to the S&P, tumbled 5% and sent US equity futures near session lows and in danger of breaching 2,600 - the new key support - in the S&P500.

A Canadian kidnapped in Burkina Faso on Tuesday has been found dead, a spokesman for the security ministry told Reuters on Thursday.

President Tayyip Erdogan's office said Turkish authorities had received Dutch police intelligence saying Boersma "had links to a designated terrorist organization (as well as) a request for information about her movements in and out of Turkey."

 

Prosecutors in the Netherlands did not seek her extradition, national broadcaster NOS reported. It cited prosecutors as saying: "We cannot confirm there is a criminal investigation involving Boersma."

 

The Dutch national police and intelligence service declined to comment. All Dutch authorities referred calls on the matter to the national prosecutor's office, where spokespeople did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

State lawmakers in South Dakota, USA, have proposed a law banning transgender athletes from competing against rivals of opposite biological sex.

The new bill will require transgender participants to enter sporting events in accordance with the gender listed on their birth certificate, instead of their assumed sexual choice.

β€œTexas’ University Interscholastic League requires that students participate on sports teams that correspond with the sex listed on their birth certificate,” Senator Jim Bolin, a lawmaker behind the proposed bill said.

 

β€œI just firmly believe that those who are males should play in sports designated for males and those who are females … should play in sports designated for females, according to your birth certificate. It’s about fair competition,” he added.

In October, the fairness of transgender athletes’ participation in sport was questioned again, after Canadian transgender cyclist Rachel McKinnon won the women’s sprint at the 2018 world championship.

The price for palladium has surged to record-high levels on lower supply and increasing demand for the precious metal that is vital for the auto-making industry. It continues to beat gold as the world's best commodity investment.

Spot palladium soared five percent to $1,427 per ounce, having risen more than 10 percent so far this month. Spot gold increased by just 0.1 percent to $1,294.22 an ounce against a backdrop of various geopolitical concerns, including the US government shutdown, China’s economic forecast, Brexit, and US’ pending tariffs on European vehicles.

Russia looks to corner global platinum market

The price for palladium, which is commonly used in emissions-reducing catalysts for vehicles, has skyrocketed more than 60 percent since mid-August. In December, palladium price overtook gold for the first time in 16 years, making the precious metal the most expensive in the world.

 

β€œAny new high in the market is triggering additional buying… It is a good old-fashioned squeeze driven by tight fundamentals, strong momentum and low liquidity,” Saxo Bank analyst Ole Hansen told Reuters.

 

The latest move higher may be linked to short covering, according to Michael Matousek, head trader at US Global Investors, as quoted by CNBC.

 

A sustained period of record palladium automotive demand, with last year’s estimate of 8.5 million ounces, coupled with constrained mine production growth has led to demand outpacing supply over much of the current decade, reads a note from Metals Focus seen by the agency.

 

β€œIn the long run, we believe that palladium will continue to benefit from exceptionally strong supply-demand, resulting in yet higher prices. However, in the near future, we believe that palladium is due a correction,” the consultancy said.

This is a great tribute to America.

Let me make one thing plain. I respect the right of workers in the private sector to strike. Indeed, as president of my own union, I led the first strike ever called by that union. I guess I'm maybe the first one to ever hold this office who is a lifetime member of an AFL - CIO union. But we cannot compare labor-management relations in the private sector with government. Government cannot close down the assembly line. It has to provide without interruption the protective services which are government's reason for being.

It was in recognition of this that the Congress passed a law forbidding strikes by government employees against the public safety. Let me read the solemn oath taken by each of these employees, a sworn affidavit, when they accepted their jobs: "I am not participating in any strike against the Government of the United States or any agency thereof, and I will not so participate while an employee of the Government of the United States or any agency thereof."

It is for this reason that I must tell those who fail to report for duty this morning they are in violation of the law, and if they do not report for work within 48 hours, they have forfeited their jobs and will be terminated.

Q. Mr. President, are you going to order any union members who violate the law to go to jail?

The President. Well, I have some people around here, and maybe I should refer that question to the Attorney General.

Buttigieg calls reappointing Daryl Boykins as police chief a few weeks after taking office in 2012 his β€œfirst serious mistake as mayor.”

When he demoted Boykins to captain in March 2012, he knew only that Boykins, believing that some other officers wanted his job, had allegedly confronted them with tape recordings that could embarrass them if disclosed, Buttigieg writes. Shortly after the demotion, media outlets began reporting on β€œrumors” that the tapes contained evidence of officers using racist language to describe Boykins.

A civilian police employee who listened to the tapes said the officers used racist language and discussed their own criminal activities.

Buttigieg writes that federal prosecutors sent him a β€œthinly veiled” message that they would charge Boykins if he didn’t step down, so he had to decide which scenario was more likely to β€œtear the community apart β€” a well-liked African American police chief potentially being indicted over compliance with a very technical federal law, or me removing him for allowing it to reach this point?”

But something had to change.

β€œEven leaving aside that I believed removing him was the best way to avoid him facing potential legal action, I had lost confidence in the leadership of a chief who had not come to me the moment he realized he was the target of an FBI investigation.”

In April 2012, Buttigieg said publicly he had β€œresolved the situation” to his satisfaction and a month later asked the U.S. Department of Justice to take over the case.

The police tapes controversy turned into a protracted legal battle, and Buttigieg acknowledges in the book that the issue β€œaffected my relationship with the African-American community in particular for years” and that he saw important lessons about β€œthe deeply fraught relationship between law enforcement and communities of color.”

The legal fight still lingers today.

Buttigieg initially liked Republican Gov. Mike Pence, but that changed when Pence championed and signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a bill passed by the GOP-controlled Indiana General Assembly that would have let business owners cite their religious beliefs in denying service to gay couples.

 

Immigration raid?

One day early in 2017, shortly after Trump took office, the mayor’s phone started to β€œblow up” with texts asking if there was any truth to rumors of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on the west side, where many Latinos live and operate businesses.

Buttigieg writes that he β€œasked around” whether there was any truth to the rumor, and determined there was not. But before he knew that for sure, several small businesses on the west side had closed for the day, parents were β€œgrabbing” their children from school and families were taking refuge at St. Adalbert’s Church.

One evening soon after, he attended a β€œKnow Your Rights” event at Harrison Primary Center, where a legal nonprofit had set up a projector with a slideshow. A group of mostly white students from Adams High School had volunteered to watch children of the Latino parents who had come.

β€œWhen I was in high school (National Honor Society), our volunteer projects had to do with things like litter cleanup,” he writes. β€œNow, in post-2016 America, there were whole new categories of things you can volunteer to do β€” such as consoling and entertaining six-year-olds while their terrified immigrant parents gather in a school gym to get legal advice on how to keep their families from being torn apart by federal agents.”

Ellison and former Obama Labor Secretary Tony Perez were the front-runners when Buttigieg entered the race late. Ellison, a Minnesota congressman, had the support of the party’s growing left wing, many of them young people, while Perez was seen as representing the party establishment. YouTube suspends adverts on Tommy Robinson’s account

YouTube has demonetised the account of controversial British activist Tommy Robinson for breaching the site’s advertising guidelines.

 

The Google-owned video platform said it had placed the restrictions on Robinson’s YouTube channel – which has 270,000 subscribers – for content around controversial issues and sensitive events.

 

The ban comes a day after YouTube removed adverts for far-right group Britain First from the platform for breaching rules which prohibit content which promotes β€œhatred, intolerance or discrimination”.

 

Video creators on YouTube are able to collect money from advertising by allowing adverts to be shown on their videos.

Thursday's filings are the latest salvo in legal wrangling between defense and prosecution lawyers over whether strict conditions should be imposed on Gbagbo and former youth minister Charles Ble Goude if they are freed to ensure they return to court. Prosecutors plan to appeal both men's acquittals.

 

Judges ordered the men released on Tuesday and again a day later after rejecting a prosecution request to impose strict conditions on their freedom. On Wednesday night prosecutors asked for the release to be suspended while an appeal on the issue is heard.

TASS /. There is little hope that the United States and Russia will be able to preserve the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, told journalists in Berlin on Thursday.

 

"I was in Moscow this week and had the opportunity to talk to people. I came back without much hope regarding the future decision. I will be unexpectedly and pleasantly surprised, if a decision is made," the official stated.

 

The United States and the USSR signed the INF treaty on December 8, 1987. It came into force on June 1, 1988. The agreement applies to deployed and non-deployed ground-based missiles of intermediate range (1,000-5,000 kilometers) and shorter range (500-1,000 kilometers). In recent years, the US has repeatedly accused Russia of violating the accord. Moscow has vehemently refuted these claims and voiced its own concerns regarding Washington’s compliance with the treaty.

 

On January 15, Moscow and Washington held inter-departmental consultations on the INF in Geneva. Following the talks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the US was not trying to bring the parties together but showed willingness to "bring their position to its logical conclusion and wreck the treaty". In turn, US Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, Andrea Thompson, accused Russia of violating the agreement and confirmed that the US would begin the process of withdrawing from the INF on February 2, if Moscow does not destroy the 9M729 missile. Washington asserts that this rocket breaches the agreement.

"The Work-Around"

 

Because of how crazy things seem sometimes I thought about this the other day as I was digging and following the current crumbs and threads of research, comms and situational developments in "The Plan".

I was reminded of this:

In any good "Plan" there are, calculated-in = "Work-Arounds".

I've mentioned this before having worked for years in (Industrial Engineering & the Motion Control Industry)

Simplified explanation is the example of β†’ (Ladder Logic) of the (PLC) Programmable Logic Computer.

Basically a spider web of circuits with (Pathways) which have a multitude of (Switches = "Bits") that are either (ON) or (OFF)

Switches = Bits

Bits can be "Toggled" = (ON) or (OFF)

"Toggle a Bit" = and it changes the condition of what the PLC is commanding the machine to do.

The caveat is: The condition of one (BIT = ON or OFF) affects all other (Bits) that it's connected to. Those affect the ones they're connected to and so forth. So you can see how things can get complicated very quickly. It's a (Cascading Effect).

 

Daily, we here who are doing serious research and analysis or lurking attentively, are constantly observing (Bits being Toggled). Sometimes our (Input) here (Toggles a Bit). Other times, POTUS, Q or un-named Patriots (Toggle Bits). Many times [The Enemy] (Toggles Bits).

 

My point: This is an ever-changing battle space that is like a (Fluid & Adaptable = Ladder Logic Plan) β†’ With planned-in "Work-Arounds" depending on the (ON/OFF) condition of the various (BITS) in the (Diagram of the Map) β†’ With (BITS) being constantly "Toggled".

SOTU is one of the constitutionally specified duties of the President. It is also universally covered by the MSM. Trump doesn’t want to miss this chance to red pill blue and purple people out there. He also doesn’t want the optics of Pelosi interfering with his Presidential duty - which some libtard will eventually turn around and call for his impeachment over.

 

Trump needs to deliver the SOTU on schedule at a location of his choosing. If he cannot use the House chamber because of some protocol needing the Speaker’s consent, then use the Capital rotunda, or do the SOTU at a MAGA rally (like others have suggested) or just deliver it from the White House. I’d hold it in the biggest location I could and invite all the Republicans and friendly Dems (there are a few) to attend. Make it a big deal and hit Pelosi hard on her obstruction of the Executive branch and how she is going to lose. Announce the National Emergency to build the wall and the RIFs that will eventually cut spending where the government can reopen without raising the spending limit.

 

Watch her head explode when she is rendered impotent and ineffective in front of the world.

For weeks I’ve been telling my subscribers that something changed in the gold market. Since Donald Trump’s election there was a pretty clear pair trade between the U.S. dollar and gold.

 

And that trade was most manifested in the price of gold in euros.

 

During last summer gold experienced its worse (in terms of time) downtrend of the seven-year bear market.

 

But since bottoming in October it has rallied, albeit weakly. It is still mired in that bear market, gamely trying to push through the $1300 barrier. The important zone is the $1365-75 post-Brexit vote area.

 

And with Brexit very much up in the air at this point, despite the best efforts to project otherwise by The Davos Crowd and their political/media quislings, gold’s relative weakness is a real worry for long-suffering gold bulls.

 

While the currently monthly chart is a mildly-bullish uptrend, and has been since December 2015, it is a counter-trend withing a broader bear market that has not finished.

 

But, we know all this. Nothing about gold has been interesting for months. Newmont Minng (NYSE:NEM) and Goldcorp (NYSE:GG) announced a huge merger the other day, funds are scrubbing gold from both their names and their portfolios, investors have lost all interest.

 

That is because the real story is not what’s happening in the U.S., and consequently the dollar, it is Europe.

 

And this is reflected in the euro.

 

As I said at the beginning, the election of Donald Trump created a very strong pair trade between the euro and gold. Since the October

 

This is a far more bullish move than we saw in dollars. And it says that the breakdown in gold last summer may very well be the false move to get everyone on the wrong side of the trade.

 

New bull or bear markets happen only when a significant majority of actors are betting with the current trend which has played out. Once everyone is a bull there are no more buyers and vice versa.

 

It also screams that investors are now looking at gold as a safe-haven play again and it is not purely trading as a currency pair. There is a new dynamic at play that hasn’t been there, frankly, since the run up to Brexit.

 

Moreover, it has been plainly obvious watching the day-to-day trading of both gold and the euro that there is a concerted effort to manage this price level.

 

Gold isn’t breaking out in Japanese Yen or Swiss Francs, at this point only the euro and the British pound.

TUNIS (Reuters) - Rail, bus and air traffic stopped in Tunisia and street protests drew thousands on Thursday as the huge UGTT union staged a one-day nationwide strike to challenge the government’s refusal to raise the salaries of 670,000 public servants

 

The strike was the biggest since the assassination of opposition politician Chokri Belaid in February 2013, when Tunisia was navigating a rocky transition to democracy after the toppling of autocrat Ben Ali two years earlier.

 

The North African country has since adopted a constitution guaranteeing fundamental rights and holding free elections, making it the only β€œArab Spring” country to avoid conflict as in Syria or further bouts of political turmoil like Egypt.

 

An economic crisis has eroded living standards for Tunisians, however, and unemployment is high as political turmoil and lack of reforms have deterred investment needed to create jobs. That has forced the government to launch austerity measures to please donors and lenders including the International Monetary Fund.

 

β€œThe government have chosen the confrontation with the public servants and we are ready,” UGTT leader Nourredine Taboubi told thousands of people gathered in front of UGTT headquarters on Thursday.

 

β€œWe will study on Saturday the next steps and we will step up our action and will not back down”, he added without giving details on a possible escalation.

 

Protesters outside the UGTT HQ and in the capital’s Habib Bourghiba Avenue called for salary hikes.

 

β€œThe people want the overthrow of the government”, β€œPower belongs to the people”, they chanted β€” slogans used in 2011 when protests against Ben Ali began the β€œArab Spring”.

 

Police showed a strong presence but did not interfere.

 

Other cities also saw protests, including Sidi Bouzid, the cradle of the 2011 revolution, Gafsa, Jendouba and Sfax.

 

The one-day strike hit ports, schools, hospitals, state media and government offices. At Tunis Carthage airport, most flights were canceled and check-in counters closed, leaving hundreds of angry passengers stranded.

 

Tunisia is under pressure from the IMF to freeze public sector wages β€” the bill for which doubled to about 16 billion dinars ($5.5 billion) in 2018 from 7.6 billion in 2010 β€” as part of measures to reduce its budget deficit.

 

But the UGTT says the monthly average wage of about $250 is one of the lowest in the world, while the state Institute of Strategic Studies says real purchasing power has fallen by 40 percent since 2014.

Spokesman Iyad Dahmani said the government did not have the funds to pay more for public employees and that any increase would lift annual inflation to 10 percent from 7.4 percent now.

 

Government and union sources told Reuters the government had proposed spending about $400 million on pay rises versus $850 million the UGTT wants.

 

That would help cut the public sector wage bill to 12.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2020 from 15.5 percent now β€” one of the world’s highest levels according to the IMF, which struck a $2.8 billion loan deal with Tunisia in December 2016.

Russian metal tycoon Oleg Deripaska is suing Gennady Zyuganov, the leader of the Russian Communist Party, after the politician branded his business the β€œbiggest scam.”

In a Parliament speech on key events of 2018, the Communist leader lashed out at his political opponents. Deripaska got a (dis)honorary mention for his attempts to insulate his aluminum business from Western sanctions targeting him personally, by reducing his stake in Rusal and En+ and thus relinquishing control over them. The companies also had some changes in management.

 

β€œFirst they stole the factories from the citizens, and now they gave it to the Anglo-Saxons to control. This is madness! We have to investigate this crime, because this crime was committed against the strategic policy of our entire country and our national security,” the communist said after labeling Deripaska’s effort the β€œbiggest scam” of the last year.

 

The speech was delivered on January 9, on the first working day after the New Year recess. Apparently, after some deliberation, Deripaska decided that the colorful rhetoric of his affairs is insulting enough to merit a lawsuit.

 

On Tuesday, his legal team filed the paperwork with a Moscow court, accusing Zyuganov of tarnishing Deripaska’s business reputation and demanding one million rubles ($15,000) in damages. The billionaire promised to donate the money to a charity, if he wins.

 

The lawsuit says the politician’s words were published by the party’s social media accounts and cited by various news media outlets, which effectively makes them amount to libel. Zyuganov accused Deripaska of committing unspecified crimes while offering no evidence to back the allegations, the lawsuit argues, according to the news website RBK, which reviewed the court papers.

 

The Communist Party leader dismissed the news, saying he was not afraid of a court battle. β€œWhich one will it be for me? My lawyers will handle it,” he was cited as saying.

The safeguard measures approved on Wednesday impose quotas on 26 product categories, and levy a 25 percent duty on imports exceeding those quotas, according to the European Commission (EC).

 

The definitive measures aim to preserve traditional trade flows,” it said, noting that EU member countries had backed the plan to impose β€œsafeguards” and that definitive measures would come into force early in February.

 

The bloc had already imposed safeguards on a provisional basis on imports of 23 steel product types in July, with an expiry date of February 4.

 

The Commission’s plan involves a quota set at the average level of imports over the past three years, plus five percent. A 25 percent tariff would apply once the quotas are filled.

 

The main exporters of steel to the EU are China, India, Russia, South Korea, Turkey and Ukraine

 

According to the Commission, import volumes into the trade bloc increased significantly from March 2018, when the United States imposed tariffs of 25 percent on imports of steel and 10 percent on aluminum. Washington extended those measures to the European Union, Canada and Mexico in June.

 

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has called the EU’s safeguards protectionist, claiming that steel exports to the United States have only dropped slightly and so little extra steel has been diverted to Europe.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s planned departure after William Barr is confirmed as the next attorney general has sparked a guessing game in Washington about who will succeed him.

In an interview with The Hill on Wednesday, Terwilliger declined to say whether Barr has approached him about the position or whether he would take it if offered.

 

β€œI think it would be inappropriate to presume I would be asked,” he said. β€œI’m not going to comment on that. I will say that I have a lot of commitments to clients about things important to them and to me. I’m not sure it could be in the cards for me anyway.”

 

He also downplayed the significance of his attendance at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday.

 

β€œI really was just there to be supportive of someone who I both worked with professionally and who is a close friend,” he said.

 

Raphaelson and Cox did not respond to requests for comment.

 

If Terwilliger isn’t interested, his son might be.

 

G. Zachary Terwilliger, who was confirmed as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in August, has close family ties to Barr and could be a candidate, said a source who previously worked on Justice Department nominations.

 

Terwilliger declined to comment for this story.

Experts say Barr is likely to seek someone with prosecutorial experience.

Williams noted that deputies are often former U.S. attorneys. Rosenstein served as the U.S. attorney for Maryland and Sally Yates, who served as deputy attorney general under former President Obama, was the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

 

Selecting someone with prosecutorial experience, Williams said, might also minimize any fears among career employees that the people at the top are too political.

 

News of Rosenstein’s imminent departure has put Washington on edge, with many worrying about what will become of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russia probe since former Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself in March 2017.

 

Barr has been critical of Mueller’s investigation in the past, but on Tuesday promised the special counsel would be allowed to complete his work if he’s confirmed as attorney general.

 

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) pressed Barr during his confirmation hearing on whether he had anything to do with Rosenstein’s plans to leave the department.

 

β€œYou have not undertaken to run him out in any way?” Whitehouse asked.

 

β€œAbsolutely not,” Barr said.

 

Barr said that he and Rosenstein have been discussing the departure.

 

β€œHe told me he viewed it as a two-year stint and would like to use my coming in as an occasion to leave,” Barr said. β€œBut we talked about the need for a transition and I asked if he would stay awhile, and he said he would.”

 

When asked what he would look for in a successor, Barr said he would prefer someone who’s a good manager and has experience running government programs.

 

β€œI want a first-rate lawyer and someone who’s judgement I feel comfortable in,” he said.

 

The Hill contacted several former DOJ officials, and many insiders were tight-lipped about possible contenders. Several legal experts, however, were adamant that acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is not in the running.

 

β€œI feel confident Barr would never choose him,”said Harry Litman, a law professor and lawyer who worked under Barr in 1991 and 1992.

The House passed two bills to protect federal interns and employees from discrimination and sexual harassment. The Federal Employee Antidiscrimination Act would require federal equal employment opportunity programs operate independently of human resources and general counsel offices. Agencies would also be required to establish a system for tracking each complaint of discrimination. If they find it does take place, they then would refer them to the Office of Special Counsel. The intern protection act would give interns the same protections as federal employees. Both bills head to the Senate now.

President Trump signs legislation guaranteeing back pay for furloughed and excepted employees during the government shutdown. The Government Employee Fair Treatment Act also instructs payroll providers to start processing checks as soon as the government reopens, regardless of the next scheduled pay period. Canadian man's bullet-riddled body found in Burkina Faso, officials say

 

Government officials in Burkina Faso have confirmed a Canadian mining company employee has been found dead after being kidnapped in the west African country.

 

An official with the Ministry of Security says Kirk Woodman, a Halifax man who worked for the Vancouver-based Progress Mineral Mining Company, was found dead late Wednesday in Oudalan province.

 

Jean Paul Badoum said from Ouagadougou, the country’s capital, that the body was found with bullet wounds.

 

Badoum said Woodman was kidnapped by armed gunmen from a mining camp, but officials have not yet identified the kidnappers.

 

He said no group has taken responsibility for the kidnapping.

 

Badoum said the body was found alone.

 

Acadia University professor Sandra Barr said in an email late Wednesday that Woodman was quite well-known among geologists in Nova Scotia, where he was based, and had worked in Africa for decades.

Voter registration would be made easier. Citizens could register online or get registered automatically, via data from driver's licenses or other government sources. For federal elections, states would have to provide same-day registration and at least 15 days of early voting. Election Day would be a federal holiday.

The bill would crack down on efforts to take voters off the rolls or prevent them from casting ballots. Felons could regain their voting rights after finishing their sentences.

Federal elections would require paper ballots to prevent computer tampering. State chief election officials couldn't get involved in federal campaigns.
