Former Texas A&M Forest Service firefighter ordered to serve 30 years for sexual assaulting a girl for 9 years

CONROE, Texas — A former Texas A&M Forest Service wildland firefighter was ordered to serve 30 years in state prison Wednesday for sexually assaulting a girl for more than nine years, starting when she was 8 years old.

This case was investigated by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), with assistance from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Montgomery County Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Taskforce.

On March 6, in the 359th Montgomery County (Texas) District Court, Jeffrey Pittman, 47, from Porter, Texas, pleaded guilty to and was ordered to serve 30 years in prison for continuous sexual assault of a child; he was also sentenced to 20 years for sexual assault of a child. Pittman’s sentences are to be served concurrently. He is not eligible for early parole.

In March 2018, MCSO began investigating Pittman for allegations of child sex abuse. After it was discovered that he had taken inappropriate photographs of a girl, HSI Houston and the Montgomery County ICAC Task Force were brought in to assist with the investigation.

A forensic search of Pittman’s cellphone revealed numerous pornographic images of children. Investigators subsequently uncovered evidence to confirm suspicions that Pittman had engaged in sex acts with a girl for more than nine years, from the time she was about 8 years old.

Following the announcement, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Mark Dawson, HSI Houston, commended the lengthy sentence and assured the public that removing child predators from the streets remains a top priority for HSI.

“Today’s sentence sends a strong message to child predators everywhere,” said SAC Dawson. “HSI will continue to aggressively pursue those who seek to abuse our most vulnerable population to ensure they are brought to justice for their heinous acts.”

Montgomery County Prosecutor Laura Bond credited the strong partnerships in the Houston-area law enforcement community for ensuring that justice was served.

“It was because of the collaboration with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and other members of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Taskforce that this child was able to get the justice she deserves,” said Prosecutor Bond.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 19,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2018, more than 3,000 (3191) child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 850 (859) victims identified or rescued.

Saudi Airstrike Kills 21 Civilians in Northwest Yemen

House destroyed was used by women to hide during fighting

Saudi warplanes attacked and destroyed a house full of hiding civilians in Yemen’s northwestern Hajjah Province on Sunday, killing 21 civilians within. Locals say the victims were 20 women and a child.

Tribesmen familiar with the situation said that the house, in Tallan village, was commonly used by the women in the village to hide during clashes in the area. Since these tribes have recently aligned with the Saudis, this is information that the Saudis ought to have had access to when selecting targets.

This is a recurring problem with the Saudi War in Yemen, with Saudi warplanes regularly hitting obviously civilian targets for no apparent reason. As usual, the Saudi coalition itself has so far declined all comment on the matter.

It is incidents like these that have led to a recent warning from the UN refugee agency that the Saudi war in Yemen averages 100 civilian casualties per week. Large civilian casualties throughout the war have fueled international outcry, and growing calls to stop arming the Saudis.

Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch announced Monday it filed an ethics complaint against Rep. Adam Schiff over his contacts with Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson and Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen.

The official complaint filed by Judicial Watch with the Office of Congressional Ethics, requests House Intel Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) be investigated in connection with recent revelations that he secretly met with Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson in Aspen, Colorado in July of 2018.

The complaint also requests Schiff be investigated after it was revealed his staff traveled to New York and met with Michael Cohen for 10 hours prior to Trump’s former lawyer testifying to the House Intel Panel.

“Rep. Schiff has an ethics problem. His and his staff’s irregular communications with anti-Trump witnesses reflect poorly on the credibility of the House and its committees’ investigations,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “It has long been apparent that Rep. Schiff can’t be trusted to lead the Intelligence Committee, so we hope that Democrats on the Ethics Committee stop protecting Mr. Schiff and take action.”

Beyond the alleged IDF “vacations” on Lewis’ land, his presence in the area has been controversial for other reasons, namely for concerns that he sought to usurp key regional resources. Indeed, journalist Gonzalo Sanchez noted in his 2004 book Patagonia Sold: The New Owners of the Land:

In El Bolsón, there are more than a few locals and city council members that believe that, behind his [Lewis’] generosity, there are other hidden objectives, like the possible control of the water reserves of this part of Patagonia (pg. 50).”

Inklings of the truth in relation to these concerns were evident as soon as Lewis acquired the property surrounding Lago Escondido. This large mountain lake, which Lewis’ property surrounds, is the water basin for two important regional rivers, the Manso and Puelo, which later unite in Chile and drain into the Pacific. It is also the lake the feeds other nearby lakes including the Soberanía Lakes and Montes Lake, among others. Lago Escondido itself is estimated to contain as many as 400 billion liters (~105 billion gallons) of freshwater.

In Argentina, as is also the case in neighboring Chile, water – whether in lakes, rivers or seas – is a public right and public access to all bodies of water is guaranteed by law. This legal concept — likely foreign to Lewis and other Westerners, whose home countries often enshrine private property rights over the public’s right to vital resources — has been the most visible way in which tensions between Lewis and locals have manifested. It was also the first real test of Lewis’ resolve to carve out his “independent state” in Patagonia and keep locals out.

Lewis closed off the public road from the highway to the lake and also closed the private road he built at a separate point from public access. According to several locals interviewed by MintPress who had tried to enter the area, private security in civilian clothing prevent people from using the roads either by vehicle or on foot. Federico Soria, who has himself tried to enter the area on several occasions, described the guards to MintPress as “intimidating” and “aggressive” and also said that the Montero family, the old owners of the land, block one of the roads before it enters Lewis’ property and are “heavily armed.”

The only remaining path is a steep – and in places, dangerous – mountain path that takes at least two days in each direction to traverse. The path is poorly marked and maintained and is only usable in summer, as it is blocked by snowfall in other seasons. Every person interviewed by MintPress who had seen or traversed the path described it as being suitable only for “experienced mountaineers.”

In 2009, Lewis suffered his first major defeat in his efforts to keep locals out of his “parallel state” when the regional court ruled that the Tacuifi road — which connects the lake to the main highway, Route 40, and crosses Lewis’ property — be opened. The ruling stated that this must be done in order to “ensure access to Lago Escondido with appropriate signaling and ensuring transability.” The court gave Lewis 120 days to comply.

However, he didn’t comply and instead his regional associates began openly threatening any who tried to visit “his” lake. The clearest threat came from Van Dittmar himself in 2011, when he publicly stated that he and other Hidden Lake S.A. employees would defend Lewis’ private property by “fighting with blood, if we have to.” Van Ditmar also said that he would keep locals from accessing the lake “with a Winchester [rifle] in hand, with blood if necessary.”

Former Gillibrand Staffer Resigned Over Handling of Sexual Harrasment Claims

One of the most prominent voices of the #MeToo movement, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), ignored sexual harassment complaints from a young female staffer last year prompting the aide to resign in protest, according to a digital copy of her resignation later sent to the senator’s personal email. Gillibrand was spearheading efforts to change how Congress handles allegations of sexual harassment last year, as the female aide—who wanted to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation and damage to her future career—accused the senator of going against her own “public belief that women shouldn’t accept sexual harassment in any form.” “I have offered my resignation because of how poorly the investigation and post-investigation was handled,” the former aide wrote.

The staffer said in her letter that she had filed a complaint to Deputy Chief of Staff Anne Bradley on July 25 detailing her sexual harassment at the hands of Abbas Malik, the special assistant to Gillibrand. Gillibrand’s office conducted an investigation into her claims on the day and resolved it on July 30. The staffer said she was told both the office and Gillibrand did not find cause to fire Malik and claimed it was a “series of misinterpretations” and too much of a “he said, she said” situation. Malik was still punished as a result of making inappropriate remarks and was demoted.

But the former aide said the following events “directly led” to her decision to resign. On July 31, Bradley entered the former aide’s office and said that “Jess [Fassler] told Abbas that he could have fired him for a number of reasons but isn’t going to, so he should consider himself lucky.” Fassler is the chief of staff. The former aide said she was “deeply confused” and “saddened” by what she heard, prompting her to discuss the matter later in the afternoon with Fassler and Bradley. But in that discussion, Fassler told her “You could also be fired at any minute, for any reason.” In a later discussion on her resignation with Fassler in August, Fassler told her, “I could have fired you too. You fed Abbas alcohol while he was on duty.” The former aide said the comments were “grossly inaccurate” and said she felt intimidated, even when she was in the process of quitting. “I trusted and leaned on this statement that you made: ‘You need to draw a line in the sand and say none of it is O.K. None of it is acceptable,” the aide wrote to Gillibrand.

Gillibrand’s’ office did not respond to a request for comment, but she issued a statement to Politico defending how her office handled the incident: “As I have long said, when allegations are made in the workplace, we must believe women so that serious investigations can actually take place, we can learn the facts, and there can be appropriate accountability,” she said. “That’s exactly what happened at every step of this case last year. I told her that we loved her at the time and the same is true today.”

Malik kept his job until Politico sent new allegations of misconduct to the senator’s office two weeks ago. Gillibrand’s office then opened a new investigation and dismissed Malik last week. Gillibrand, who in January announced she is running for president in 2020, has emphasized her support for far-left policies such as “Medicare for all” and the abolition of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Clearly unhappy with this turn of events, the Laderas firms challenged the suspension of the project in court. Around this same time, members of local groups that had opposed the Laderas project reported several incidents of violence and intimidating acts, including threatening phone calls, their cars being set on fire, and the burning of a radio station as well as a community center in Mallín Ahogado.

In the case of architect and local politician Luis Martin, he was threatened with “lynching” by two Lewis associates – local businessmen Juan Carlos Martínez and Fabián Tornero – and his home was later broken into by armed thugs, one of whom accidentally cut himself with his machete and later fled the scene. Before escaping, the man had told Martin, “They have you targeted, they are going to kill you.”

In a 2011 article in Tiempo Argentina, Martínez referred to Lewis as “my friend” and was noted as a regular participant in meetings with Van Ditmar. The same article goes on to note that, in those meetings with Van Ditmar, Tornero is “influential” and further notes that Tornero is a known associate of Lewis.

In 2015, after García’s decree was challenged in court by Lewis’ firms, a judge ruled that the decree was legal but had not been written properly and therefore cancelled it. Soon after, a new pro-Lewis mayor and city council took charge and quickly signed a legal agreement with the Laderas companies, allowing them to build a “smaller project,” while claiming that any attempt to block the project – as García had done – could lead to another costly, lengthy legal battle that the municipal government just couldn’t afford. However, as Guido Augello told MintPress, this was hardly accurate, given that the local government could have appealed the decision regarding the decree, suggesting that this was just a convenient excuse to fast-track the project.

A few months after signing this agreement with the Laderas firms, the city council held a public hearing at which the vast majority of attendees from the community overwhelmingly rejected and criticized the project. Not getting the response it had hoped for, the council held a “secret” extraordinary meeting — secret because they declined to give the public the required notice needed to register to attend and participate in the meeting. With no one having registered, Pogliano decided to keep the meeting “closed” and placed police officers at the entrances to keep the townspeople out by force. The council subsequently decided to approve the Laderas project. Angry locals moved to occupy local government buildings in response, where they were targeted by riot police with tear gas.

Nvidia outbids Intel to buy Israel's Mellanox in data center push

(Reuters) - U.S. chipmaker Nvidia Corp has agreed to buy Israeli chip designer Mellanox Technologies Ltd for $6.8 billion, beating rival Intel Corp in a deal that would help the firm boost its data center and supercomputer business.

The all-cash offer of $125 per share represents a premium of 14 percent to Mellanox's closing price on Friday. Mellanox shares rose 8.4 percent to $118.56 and Nvidia shares gained 2.8 percent in early Nasdaq trading on Monday.

The agreement, which the companies described as "definitive", follows a competitive bidding process which according to sources familiar with the matter, included rival chipmakers such as Intel.

Xilinx Inc was also part of the process, sources said. Mellanox will pay a $350 million termination fee to Nvidia if it accepts a rival offer.

Reuters reported about the deal on Sunday.

Intel declined to comment on whether the company had bid for Mellanox, while Xilinx did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The emergence of AI (artificial intelligence) and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fuelling sky-rocketing demand on the world’s data centres," said Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Hung.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said Nvidia has been pushing more into networking and connectivity with its own tailored solutions and Mellanox would bring further expertise.

Even as the Venezuelan government blamed the recent power outage on U.S.-led “sabotage,” the U.S. has long had a plan on the books for targeting the civilian power grid of adversarial nations.

CARACAS, VENEZUELA — For nearly four days, much of Venezuela has been without power, bringing the country’s embattled economy to a near standstill. Though power is now returning, the outage saw U.S. officials and politicians blame the Venezuelan government for the crisis while officials in Caracas accused the U.S. of conducting “sabotage” and launching cyberattacks that targeted its civilian power grid as well as of employing saboteurs within Venezuela.

Although many mainstream media outlets have echoed the official U.S. government response, some journalists have strayed from the pack. One notable example is Kalev Leetaru, who wrote at Forbes that “the United States remotely interfering with its [Venezuela’s] power grid is actually quite realistic.”

Federal Reserve Chairman Says Trump Can’t Fire Him

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell believes that President Donald Trump does not have the legal authority to fire him and intends to serve out the rest of his four-year term.

In an interview with “60 Minutes” aired on March 10, host Scott Pelley asked Powell if the president can fire the chair of the Federal Reserve. “Well, the law is clear that I have a four-year term. And I fully intend to serve it,” Powell responded. “So no, in your view?” Pelley asked. “No,” Powell answered.

Last year, Trump repeatedly criticized the central bank for raising interest rates, raising the possibility he may fire Powell, his appointee. The question was settled when Trump’s chief economic adviser said on Dec. 26 that Powell’s job is “100 percent safe.” The law is not clear on whether the president can remove the chairman of the central bank. Trump appointed Powell in late 2017. Powell has raised rates five times since, drawing increasingly fiery criticism from Trump. In December, the president wrote on Twitter that the Federal Reserve is the “only problem” for the American economy. In November, he told The Wall Street Journal that the central bank “is a much bigger problem than China.”

When presented with one of the president’s criticisms, Powell declined to comment and reasserted the Fed’s independence. “My duty is one that Congress has given us, which is to use our tools to achieve maximum employment and stable prices and to supervise and regulate banks so that they treat their customers fairly and so that they’re strong, well-capitalized, and can perform their critical function in good times and bad,” Powell said. “That’s my job.” The central bank did not raise interest rates in January this year for this first time during Powell’s tenure. US, France, UK in talks to prolong Syria presence: Bolton

US National Security Adviser John Bolton says he has discussed a long-term military presence in Syria with his British and French counterparts, despite an order by President Donald Trump to evacuate American troops from the Arab country.

Speaking to ABC News on Sunday, Bolton was hopeful that Britain and France would also join the US efforts to prevent Daesh’s resurgence.

"It hasn't happened formally yet, but they're looking at it. I think it's very important that we try and get this up. The ISIS threat, the al Qaeda threat, the terrorist threat is an ideological threat worldwide and it's something that I think we have to be vigilant against for the foreseeable future," he said using another acronym for Daesh.

Bolton reaffirmed President Donald Trump's assessment of Daesh’s defeat in Syria but cautioned that the threat still persisted because members of the group were spread around the world.

"The president has been, I think, as clear as clear can be when he talks about the defeat of the ISIS territorial caliphate," Bolton said. "He has never said that the elimination of the territorial caliphate means the end of ISIS in total.

"We know that's not the case. We know right now that there are ISIS fighters scattered still around Syria and Iraq, and that ISIS itself is growing in other parts of the world. The ISIS threat will remain."

The remarks once again highlight Washington’s shifting messages since Trump’s announcement of a swift withdrawal from Syria.

In a video posted to Twitter in December, Trump declared that "we have won against ISIS" and "it’s time for our troops to come back home" from Syria. Back then, the president said he had directed his commanders to complete the process in three months.

While some of the nearly 2,000 US troops in Syria have already moved to the neighboring Iraq but the process has reportedly come to a halt to address concerns in Washington.

Last month, the Trump administration announced that some 400 American troops will stay in Syria indefinitely after the withdrawal was completed to allegedly protect allied Kurdish militants in Syria from possible Turkish attacks while keeping an eye out for Daesh’s reemergence.

Bolton said Sunday that the decision was out of concern that Daesh could regain its footing.

"One reason that the president has committed to keeping an American presence in Iraq and a small part of an observer force in Syria, is against the possibility that there would be a real resurgence of ISIS, and we would then have the ability to deal with that if that arose," he said.

Last week, General Joseph Votel, commander of US Central Command which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, said the fight against Daesh was "far from over."

He told the House Armed Services Committee that Daesh had made a "calculated decision" to preserve its resources and wait "for the right time to resurge."

Germany continues to fail women – Only three sexual assailants convicted following Cologne’s New Year’s Eve

Over 600 women made accusations of being sexually assaulted 2015 on New Year’s Eve in Cologne but only three sexual assailants were actually convicted.

According to “Der Spiegel” two of those sexual assailants got suspended sentences. The only reason these three were even able to be charged was because they had made selfies of themselves with their victims.

The prosecution investigated 290 suspects in total and pressed charges against 52 in 43 cases. Most of the suspects were Algerian, Moroccan and Iraqi.

Six of the investigations were stopped because police simply couldn’t find the residency of suspects. Five were stopped with conditions, 37 were brought to an end and 32 ended with convictions.

The highest sentence was imposed on a 30-year-old Algerian for robbery of a year and eleven months of imprisonment.
