Japan says US sailor kills woman, self on Okinawa

HATAN, Japan — A U.S. sailor fatally stabbed a Japanese woman and then killed himself on Okinawa, Japanese officials said, according to reports.

The two were found dead Saturday morning at an apartment in the Kuwae district of Chatan, Okinawa police said.

The sailor, age 31, whose identity was not released, is attached to III Marine Division, a III MEF spokesman said. A spokesman for the Okinawa Prefectural Police said the sailor and the woman, in her 40s, were probably in a relationship.

The two were pronounced dead at the scene in a six-story apartment building, police said. The spokesman said the woman’s child was present when the incident occurred and called a relative, who called police at 7:26 a.m. First responders from Chatan Fire Station responded at 7:59 a.m., said fire station spokesman Jun Ikema.

First Lt. David Mancilla of III MEF said the Naval Criminal Service is “in support” of the Okinawa Prefectural Police.

"We are aware of an incident resulting in the death of an apparent U.S. Navy Sailor with III Marine Division and a resident of Okinawa,” Mancilla said in an email. “This is an absolute tragedy and we are fully committed to supporting the investigation into the incident.”

Facebook accidentally put hidden messages like 'Big Brother is Watching' and 'The Masons Were Here' in 'tens of thousands' of VR controllers

Facebook said it accidentally hid bizarre and "inappropriate" messages inside "tens of thousands" of virtual-reality controllers, including "Big Brother is Watching" and "The Masons Were Here."

Nate Mitchell, the cofounder of Oculus, the Facebook-owned VR company, said on Twitter on Friday that the company inadvertently printed some unusual messages in its Touch controllers, handheld devices for playing games and navigating VR environments.

These messages were intended only for prototypes, but a mistake meant they were included in regular production devices, he said. Some messages were included in developer kits for people building software for the product, while others made their way into consumer devices in significantly larger numbers.

While there should have been no internal messages of any kind in any of the devices, a Facebook representative told Business Insider that the company would not recall them.

"Unfortunately, some 'easter egg' labels meant for prototypes accidentally made it onto the internal hardware for tens of thousands of Touch controllers," Mitchell wrote.

"The messages on final production hardware say 'This Space For Rent' & 'The Masons Were Here.' A few dev kits shipped with 'Big Brother is Watching' and 'Hi iFixit! We See You!' but those were limited to non-consumer units," he said. iFixit is a tech repair company known for publicly deconstructing new gadgets and posting photos of their innards online.

Mitchell added: "While I appreciate easter eggs, these were inappropriate and should have been removed. The integrity and functionality of the hardware were not compromised, and we've fixed our process so this won't happen again."

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he is open to a third summit with President Donald Trump, but set the year's end as a deadline for Washington to offer mutually acceptable terms for an agreement to salvage the high-stakes nuclear diplomacy, the North's state-run media said Saturday.

Kim made the comments during a speech Friday at a session of North Korea's rubber stamp parliament, which made a slew of personnel changes that bolstered his diplomatic lineup amid stalemated negotiations with the United States. His speech came hours after Trump and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in met in Washington and agreed on the importance of nuclear talks with North Korea.

"We of course place importance on resolving problems through dialogue and negotiations. But U.S.-style dialogue of unilaterally pushing its demands doesn't fit us, and we have no interest in it," Kim said during the speech.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, Kim blamed the collapse of his summit with Trump in February on what he described as unilateral demands by the United States, which he said raised questions over whether Washington has genuine willingness to improve relations. But Kim said his personal relationship with Trump remains good and that they could exchange letters at "any time."

Trump responded to the remarks by saying he agreed with Kim about their relationship, and also expressed a desire for another summit.

"I agree with Kim Jong Un of North Korea that our personal relationship remains very good, perhaps the term excellent would be even more accurate, and that a third Summit would be good in that we fully understand where we each stand," Trump wrote on Twitter.

"North Korea has tremendous potential for … extraordinary growth, economic success and riches under the leadership of Chairman Kim. I look forward to the day, which could be soon, when Nuclear Weapons and Sanctions can be removed, and then watching North Korea become one of the most successful nations of the World!" he tweeted.

In his speech, Kim repeated earlier claims that North Korea's crippled economy would persevere through heavy international sanctions imposed over its nuclear weapons program and that he wouldn't "obsess over summitry with the United States out of thirst for sanctions relief."

The United States has said the summit in Vietnam broke down because of the North's excessive demands for sanctions relief in return for limited disarmament measures. In their first summit last June in Singapore, Trump and Kim issued a vague statement calling for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula without describing when or how it would occur.

Kim said the United States has been refusing to withdraw what the North perceives as "hostile policies" while sticking to "mistaken judgment that we would succumb to maximum pressure." He said the North would not compromise on the "fundamental interests of our country and people, even by a speck," and blamed the United States for arriving in Hanoi with "completely unrealizable plans."

"If the United States approaches us with the right manner and offers to hold a third North Korea-U.S. leaders' summit on the condition of finding solutions we could mutually accept, then we do have a willingness to give it one more try," Kim added. "We will wait with patience until the end of the year for the United States to come up with a courageous decision. But it will clearly be difficult for a good opportunity like last time to come up."

Kim also during the speech made a nationalistic call for South Korea to support the North's positions more strongly and criticized Seoul for acting like an "overstepping mediator" between Washington and Pyongyang. Kim held three summits last year with Moon, who lobbied hard to revive the nuclear talks between the United States and North Korea. Following the collapse of the Trump-Kim summit, the North had been urging the South to break away from Washington and proceed with inter-Korean economic projects that are currently held back by U.S.-led sanctions against the North.

"The South should not act as an 'overstepping mediator' or a 'facilitator' and should rather get its mind straight as a member of the (Korean) nation and boldly speak up for the interest of the nation," Kim said.

When asked about Kim's comments, South Korea's presidential office said Seoul is committed toward keeping the atmosphere of dialogue alive and helping negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang resume at an early date.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) said Friday it will not pursue an investigation into possible war crimes committed during the war in Afghanistan.

After 18 months of debate, the ICC “rejected unanimously the request of the Prosecutor to proceed with an investigation for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes, on the territory of in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” according to a Friday statement.

The court’s chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda requested authorization in November 2017 to start an investigation into alleged war crimes relating to the conflict in Afghanistan.

The ICC determined the difficulties of finding sufficient evidence outweighed its ability to pursue a meaningful and thorough investigation into alleged war crimes.

“[T]he current circumstances of the situation in Afghanistan are such as to make the prospects for a successful investigation and prosecution extremely limited … [and] would not serve the interests of justice,” the court said.

The court did find, however, that the documents and materials given to them by Bensouda establishes a “reasonable basis” that crimes likely occurred. Alleged crimes have included the torture of prisoners by American C.I.A. operatives in secret jails known as “black sites.”

“This is a major international victory, not only for these patriots, but for the rule of law,” the White House said in a Friday statement applauding the ICC’s decision. “We welcome this decision and reiterate our position that the United States holds American citizens to the highest legal and ethical standards.”

Human rights groups said the ICC kowtowed to pressure from the Trump administration.

“With its decision today, the International Criminal Court sends a dangerous message: that bullying wins and that the powerful won’t be held to account,” Center for Constitutional Rights lawyer Katherine Gallagher said, according to The New York Times.

It is “outrageous that victims of war crimes are far less likely to get justice for well-documented atrocities because of the Trump administration’s authoritarian efforts to sabotage an investigation before it could even get started,” said Jamil Dakwar, the director of the Human Rights Program at the American Civil Liberties Union, TheNYT reported.

In the video, guy was interviewing his 'tour guides' who told the story of a tree ( can't recall maybe persimmon?) anyhow the story was about the Lucky Number 3 in NK and had to do with KJ IL having thek count the number of fruit in the tree.
