In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, let's look at a company that was once honored by the Clinton Global Initiative for its dedication to stopping global warming before it was discovered the leaders of the business were actually fleecing investors for more than $54 million in an elaborate Ponzi scheme. More recently earlier this month, one of the chief architects of this scam was sentenced 2.5 years in prison, five years parole, and must repay every dollar stolen from gullible financial backers.

Philadelphia Business Journal reported April 8 that "Amanda Knorr, 35, of Hellertown, Pa., received the prison sentence late Friday after pleading guilty to wire and securities fraud for what prosecutors have called the biggest scam involving clean energy in American history."

Knorr and her "business" as well as romantic partner, Troy Wragg, created a company called Mantria shortly after graduating from Temple University. The duo claimed to be selling "real estate and 'green energy' products, like biochar – a form of charcoal produced by plant matter. Prosecutors said the biochar was never actually in production."

By 2009, Mantria had received more $54 million after convincing unsuspecting investors to dump their life's savings into the company. As Jeff Blumenthal reports, "The investors were lured with the promise of huge returns, as high as 484 percent, for securities investments in supposedly profitable business ventures in real estate and green energy."

However, these products did not exist. Knorr and Wragg were simply using new investments to pay back earlier investors. The SEC discovered this was happening, shut down the scheme, and Knorr, Wragg and few other associates were forced to pay back what they could to cheated investors. Speaking of weird and unsavory, if there's one thing that really excites Thiel, it's the prospect of having younger people's blood transfused into his own veins.

 

 

That practice is known as parabiosis, and, according to Thiel, it's a potential biological Fountain of Youth–the closest thing science has discovered to an anti-aging panacea. Research into parabiosis began in the 1950s with crude experiments that involved cutting rats open and stitching their circulatory systems together. After decades languishing on the fringes, it's recently started getting attention from mainstream researchers, with multiple clinical trials underway in humans in the U.S. and even more advanced studies in China and Korea.

 

Considering the science-fiction promise of parabiosis, the studies have received notably little fanfare. But Thiel has been watching closely.

In Monterey, California, about 120 miles from San Francisco, a company called Ambrosia recently commenced one of the trials. Titled "Young Donor Plasma Transfusion and Age-Related Biomarkers," it has a simple protocol: Healthy participants aged 35 and older get a transfusion of blood plasma from donors under 25, and researchers monitor their blood over the next two years for molecular indicators of health and aging. The study is patient-funded; participants, who range in age from late 30s through 80s, must pay $8,000 to take part, and live in or travel to Monterey for treatments and follow-up assessments.

 

 

Ambrosia's founder, the Stanford-trained physician Jesse Karmazin, has been studying aging for more than a decade. He became interested in launching a company around parabiosis after seeing impressive data from animals and studies conducted abroad in humans: In one trial after another, subjects experience a reversal of aging symptoms across every major organ system. While the mechanisms at play aren't totally understood, he said, young organisms' blood not only contains all sorts of proteins that improve cell function; somehow it also prompts the recipients' body to increase its production of those proteins.

 

"The effects seem to be almost permanent," he says. "It's almost like there's a resetting of gene expression."

 

While Ambrosia advertised the study to attract participants, it didn't seek broader coverage. So Karmazin was somewhat surprised to get a message from Jason Camm, chief medical officer at Thiel Capital, who expressed interest in what the company was doing. Although his LinkedIn profile identifies him as an angel investor, that's not Camm's primary job. Cell phones were originally analog. The switch over to digital was very gradual. Digital signals allow for much greater distance to be covered on much less power (thus miniaturization of phones) because of the nature of square (digital) waves. Much more effective at filtering noise and interference.

 

This inherently means that the phones of today are going to be square wave signals and very low power. If that alone were enough, Q would not exist. They would simply shut him (them) and/or us down. The Supreme Court’s conservative justices appeared ready on Tuesday to uphold the Trump administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census and deal a defeat to California and other states with large numbers of immigrants.

 

It is a politically charged dispute over how to conduct the once-a-decade count of the U.S. population, and the justices sounded sharply split along familiar ideological lines.

 

The five conservatives, all of whom are Republican appointees, expressed support for the administration plan.

 

The law β€œgives huge discretion to the Secretary [of Commerce Wilbur Ross] on what to put on the form,” said Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh. Agreeing with Justice Neil M. Gorsuch, he said history and international practice are on the side of the administration. Through most of American history, the census asked all or some households about the citizenship of their residents, he said, and most leading countries in the world do the same.

 

The four liberals, all Democratic appointees, were even more vehement in describing the citizenship question as a scheme hatched by Trump’s advisors to drive down the population count in the states and cities that favor Democrats.

 

None of the justices sounded torn or uncertain. By the argument’s end, it appeared the high court would hand down a 5-4 ruling for the Trump administration, probably in late June.

 

Debates over the census are usually reserved for demographers and statisticians, but the dispute over the citizenship question is one of high politics.

 

Lawyers for California and other blue states with large numbers of immigrants fear that millions of households will refuse to fill out the census forms if the citizen question is included out of concern that the confidential information will be shared with immigration agents.

 

The states worry a potential undercount will cost them billions of dollars in federal funds as well as political clout.

 

Seats in the House of Representatives and in state legislatures are allocated based on census data. And the Constitution calls for β€œthe actual Enumeration” of the population and says β€œrepresentatives shall be apportioned … counting the whole number of persons in each state.” This has been understood to mean that all residents are counted, regardless of whether they are citizens.

 

Ross said he shared the goal of β€œobtaining complete and accurate data” on the U.S. population. But he announced last year that he had overruled census experts and decided to add a citizenship question for all households for the first time since 1950. The tenor of Tuesday’s argument was similar to last year’s dispute over Trump’s travel ban, which barred most visitors and immigrants from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. Democratic attorneys general on the West Coast and East Coast went to court and won rulings blocking the president’s order as exceeding his authority and discriminating unconstitutionally based on religion.

So far, the dispute over the citizenship question has followed a similar path. The attorneys general of New York, California and Maryland went to court and argued Ross’ order violated federal administrative law because it conflicted with the advice of census experts inside and outside the government. They won rulings from district judges in New York, San Francisco and Maryland, all of whom were Obama appointees.

 

U.S. Solicitor Gen. Noel Francisco took the issue directly to the Supreme Court. The justices agreed to bypass the appellate courts and hear the case now because the government plans to begin printing census forms in the summer.

 

Leaders of several progressive groups warned that conservative justices were risking the reputation of the high court as well as the accuracy of the census.

 

β€œNothing less than the integrity of the Supreme Court is on the line for Chief Justice Roberts,” said Elizabeth Wydra, president of the Constitutional Accountability Center. β€œThe record is replete with evidence of Secretary Ross’ mendacity in engineering this bogus question intended to skew the census’ constitutionally mandated count. For the Roberts court to uphold this effort would do lasting damage to the apolitical status and perception of the court that the chief justice says he wants to protect.”

 

If next year’s census asks about citizenship, California officials have said they will spend heavily on a promotion campaign to encourage all residents to fill out the census forms. They hope to reassure those who are not citizens that census data is kept confidential by law.

 

Lawyers said Tuesday that nation is believed to have about 22 million noncitizens. About half of them are legal residents and the rest are here illegally.

 

Census experts predicted that 6.5 million or more people will go uncounted if the citizenship question is added. In the trial in San Francisco, some experts predicted California would suffer the most because more than one-fourth its households include one or more noncitizens.

 

It is also possible the citizenship data could lead to a major political realignment in Republican-led states like Texas and Florida. Four years ago, the court debated but did not finally decide whether states could choose to draw the electoral districts for their states and county boards based on the count of voting-age citizens, not the whole population. Political experts say this would shift power toward older white and conservative communities β€” which often vote Republican β€” and away from communities with more immigrants.

Global markets took a step back on Wednesday, with US index futures and Asian stocks struggling to push higher following Tuesday's record S&P close amid clear signals that China has put broader monetary stimulus on hold. The MSCI world equity index, edged down 0.1 percent in early European trade, as Treasuries continued to climb alongside European sovereign bonds and the dollar extended its rally to a six-week high, defying the signal from the fresh all time highs in US stocks as bond traders refuse to "rotate greatly" into stocks, and instead see even more economic weakness (or just more QE) in the future

The top performers on the STOXX 600 were payments company Wirecard and business software company SAP, which also boosted the DAX. As reported earlier, the battered Wirecard soared 8% after Bloomberg reported that Japan’s SoftBank was looking to invest about 900 million euros ($1 billion) for a minority stake in the company, forcing a violent short squeeze. Meanwhile, SAP climbed 6% as the company set new medium-term profit targets after reporting a first-quarter operating loss that chiefly resulted from a restructuring charge according to Reuters.

 

Elsewhere, payments firm Ingenico rose +5% after reporting 1Q sales and raising FY organic growth guidance; chip stocks quickly reversed opening losses to trade higher, shaking off cautious management comments from U.S. peer Texas Instruments which weighed on expectations of industry recovery in second half of this year. STMicro also rose +3.6% after cutting spending plans and keeping its forecast for sales growth to improve this quarter as well as in 2H.

 

Earlier in the session, the MSCI Index of Asian shares ex Japan dropped 0.2%, where the biggest regional loser was South Korea’s KOSPI, which fell 0.9%, with Samsung Electronics down 1%. Central American migrants traveling through southern Mexico toward the U.S. on Tuesday fearfully recalled their frantic escape from police the previous day, scuttling under barbed wire fences into pastures and then spending the night in the woods after hundreds were detained in a raid.

 

In the Chiapas state town of Tonala, migrants flocked to one of the few places they felt they could be safe β€” the local Roman Catholic church β€” only to start with fear at the sound of a passing ambulance's siren.

 

"There are people still lost up in the woods. The woods are very dangerous," said Arturo HernΓ‘ndez, a sinewy 59-year-old farmer from Comayagua, Honduras, who fled through the woods with his grandson. "They waited until we were resting and fell upon us, grabbing children and women."

 

Mexican immigration authorities said 371 people were detained Monday in what was the largest single raid so far on a migrant caravan since the groups started moving through the country last year.

 

The once large caravan of about 3,000 people was essentially broken up by the raid, as migrants fled into the hills, took refuge at shelters and churches or hopped passing freight trains. A brave few groups straggled along the highways, but with dozens of police and immigration checkpoints, they were bound to be caught.

 

Journalists from The Associated Press saw police target isolated groups at the tail end of the caravan near Pijijiapan Monday, wrestling migrants into police vehicles for transport and presumably deportation as children wailed.

 

Now terrified of walking exposed on the highways, some turned in desperation to a tactic that used to be a popular way north, clambering aboard a passing freight train bound for the neighboring state of Tabasco. It's been years since migrants hopped trains in large numbers.

 

Javier NΓΊΓ±ez, a 25-year-old Honduran, said he and his family walked through the hills, along a river and by some train tracks after Monday's raid before venturing into the town of Pijijiapan to find something to eat. But agents appeared again Monday night and detained his wife and son, who he said were taken to an immigration facility in Tapachula for deportation processing.

 

"They were hunting us," NΓΊΓ±ez said. As he sees it, the only thing to do is go on alone, see how far he can make it. "Now we are afraid of everyone who looks at us or approaches."

 

Asked about the detentions at a Tuesday morning news conference, Mexican President AndrΓ©s Manuel LΓ³pez Obrador acknowledged that the government is not letting migrants simply go wherever they please. He denied taking a hard line, saying controls are for migrants' security because human traffickers are allegedly infiltrated among the caravans.

 

"We don't want for them to just have free passage, not just out of legal concerns but for questions of safety," LΓ³pez Obrador said.

Over eight years, the government has deported about 34,000 people via Boeing Field. King County wants it stopped.

 

As University of Washington researchers prepared to release a report highlighting King County’s β€œcollaboration” with flights deporting immigrants, county Executive Dow Constantine signed an order Tuesday that seeks – eventually – to ban such flights from using the airport he oversees.

 

At a news conference Tuesday at King County International Airport, commonly known as Boeing Field, county officials said they believe it is the first attempt by any jurisdiction in the country to ban flights carried out for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

 

β€œWe are hoping to be leading the way,” said Rachel Smith, deputy county executive and chief of staff.

 

Charter companies working on ICE’s behalf regularly use Boeing Field to fly immigrants to their home countries, and to bring others in from around the country for incarceration at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, according to a report by the UW Center for Human Rights.

 

The center obtained an ICE database showing that deportation flights from Boeing Field carried roughly 34,000 people away over the last eight years.

 

County officials said their announcement was not timed to the release of the report, though the news conference happened just one day before a planned event by the UW researchers where they were to explain their findings.

 

Neither ICE nor the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had an immediate comment on the executive order. β€œWe do not comment on hypotheticals,” said an FAA spokesperson.

 

Smith said the county expects legal challenges.

 

When the federal government gave the land for Boeing Field to the county, it stipulated that federal aircraft be allowed to use the airport. John Parrott, the airport’s director, said the county believed the executive order would not violate the stipulation because ICE doesn’t directly operate deportation flights. Charter companies do.

 

The executive order directs county officials to rewrite future leases with three companies – so-called β€œfixed base operators” – that rent space at the airport and provide services to charter flights: for instance, refueling planes. The new contracts would prohibit those companies from servicing flights transporting immigrant detainees.

 

Yet the county has accepted grants that forbid it from discriminating against any aircraft, according to the FAA.

 

β€œThere’s a very subtle nuance with the FAA,” Parrott said. The agency does not allow β€œunjust discrimination” but does allow β€œjust discrimination,” he said, meaning that the county has to have a reason.

 

The executive order elaborates on the county’s reason: β€œDeportations raise deeply troubling human rights concerns which are inconsistent with the values of King County, including separations of families, increases of racial disproportionality in policing, deportations of people into unsafe situations in other countries, and constitutional concerns of due process.”

 

County officials said they did not know when current leases at the airport expire and new ones could be negotiated. In the meantime, they said, they would try to monitor ICE flights by conducting audits of the businesses involved and by putting security cameras at key spots.

 

β€œWe’re gratified to see they’re taking the concerns raised by our research seriously,” said Angelina Godoy, director of the Center for Human Rights.

 

That research looks at the scope of operations involved in what’s known as β€œICE Air.” The center wrote two reports, one analyzing national data and one related specifically to King County.

Both reports look at the players involved. One charter company working for ICE Air, for instance, is Arizona-based Swift Air, which on its website advertises its β€œpremier VIP operations” and β€œexceptional service” to professional sports teams and Fortune 500 companies.

 

Swift Air did not return a phone call and email seeking comment on its ICE flights.

 

The UW reports also point to allegations of abuse on two ICE flights. One was a deportation flight to Somalia, during which a mechanical problem caused the plane to turn back. When the plane returned to the U.S., some passengers said they had been handcuffed and shackled for nearly 48 hours, were beaten and forced to urinate in bottles or on themselves.

 

β€œThe allegations of ICE mistreatment onboard the Somali flight are categorically false,” said ICE in a statement.

 

The reports also say codes in the database they received indicate thousands of people have been deported despite pending appeals of deportation orders. The UW researchers relied on other analysts familiar with immigration procedures to decipher the codes.

It was "a planned ambush … to break up this caravan," said Denis Aguilar, a factory union leader from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. "They grabbed the children … the strollers are abandoned there."

 

Aguilar said he and his brother fled through the woods until they found a ranch house whose residents took them in. In the morning, the family drove them to a bus stop.

 

Maria Mesa, a homemaker from La Esperanza, Honduras, said she saw officials tugging children as their mothers battled to pull them through the barbed wire fences. She saw other children weeping, alone, on the edge of the woods. Mesa has kids of her own, but left them home because she knew it would be a hard journey.

 

Her decision to go alone contrasts with the many thousands of others from Central America migrating with relatives toward the U.S. border, where detentions of people traveling in families have spiked. They typically say they are fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries, and many hope to seek asylum.

 

Those who arrive at the U.S. border must contend with policies limiting how many are allowed to apply for refuge each day. The United States has also returned some to wait in Mexico while their asylum cases inch through a backlogged court system. Trump recently told migrants not to come, saying: "Our country is full, turn around."

 

Migrants who opt to join caravans do so figuring there is safety in numbers and also because it is a relatively inexpensive alternative to paying thousands of dollars to a "coyote," or smuggler.

 

But they are finding it a much tougher go through Mexico than before. In addition to Monday's dramatic raid, migrants have experienced a cooler reaction from townspeople, who last year donated food and clothing but have grown tired of the groups. Migrants say once-friendly Mexicans now refuse to give even water, leaving them no choice but to drink from puddles at times.

 

"People don't want them to enter the towns," said Gerardo Lara Espinosa, a bus dispatcher in Tonala, who said the caravans are seen as overwhelming small towns and hurting businesses.

 

Mexican officials said last month they would try to contain migrants in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico's narrowest stretch and the easiest to control. Pijijiapan is not far from the isthmus' narrowest point, in neighboring Oaxaca state.

 

About 300 migrants hopped a train Monday to Ixtepec, in Oaxaca. On Tuesday, others were walking along the road to Tonala, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Pijijiapan.

 

Jorge Herrera, a farm worker from El Progreso, Honduras, said he and his 7-year-old son fled through the woods after the raid. The boy is sunburned and has cuts and mosquito bites. Herrera thinks LΓ³pez Obrador is doing Trump's dirty work.

 

"He must be bought. He must be paid for them to do this to us," Herrera said.

Sweeney renewed his call for the authority to be abolished and has proposed folding it into the Economic Development Authority. But that agency is also at the center of controversy over tax breaks, and board members have resisted Murphy's call for them to resign.

Boeing abandons 2019 outlook after 737 MAX groundings

 

(Reuters) - Boeing Co missed sharply-lowered Wall Street estimates for revenue and cashflow in the first quarter and suspended its 2019 outlook, as the world’s largest planemaker continued to suffer from the grounding of its 737 MAX jets.

 

The company said it faced $1 billion in increased costs in the first-quarter ended March 31, related to the 737 aircraft as it halted deliveries of the grounded planes to customers around the globe.

 

The company also said it was halting share buybacks.

 

The fallout of a second deadly crash within months in March has seen Boeing cut production of the jets to 42 aircraft per month, down from 52, and its operating cash flow in the first quarter was around $350 million lower than a year earlier.

 

Boeing is also spending on developing a fix for an anti-stall software known by the acronym MCAS, which has been a common link in the separate chains of events leading to the two crashes within a span of five months.

 

The company said it would be issuing a new forecast in the future when it has more clarity around the issues surrounding the 737 MAX.

 

First-quarter operating cash flow declined to $2.79 billion, from $3.14 billion, missing the Wall Street’s average estimate of $2.82 billion.

 

Revenue fell 2 percent to $22.92 billion, below analysts’ average estimate of $22.98 billion.

 

Excluding certain items, Boeing said its core earnings fell to $3.16 per share, in the quarter from $3.64 per share, a year earlier. Analysts had expected Boeing to earn $3.16 per share.

A massive caravan of approximately 10,000 migrants traveling through Mexico in hopes of reaching the United States is expected to arrive in Mexico City this week, according to local media reports on the group's movements.

 

The group has been described by Mexico's Interior Secretary Olga Sanchez Cordero as "caravana madre," which has been widely referred to as the "mother of all caravans" in American media.

 

Around 90 people embarked from El Salvador the last week of March then crossed into Guatemala and then into Mexico. By March 29, Sanchez said the group was expected to exceed 20,000 members. Although the caravan is roughly half that size currently, it has been reported as one of the most diverse groups because in addition to Central Americans, it is made up of people from Cuba, Haiti, and Africa.

 

The Human Rights Commission said it is working with the federal government in advance of the caravan's arrival to ensure migrants have food, shelter, and any access to other services they may require. Beds, covers, bathrooms, and other items have been brought in for the group, according to Diario de Mexico.

 

The migrants are expected to be housed in the Magdalena, a sports stadium that was used in the 1968 Olympics.

 

Cordero said in late March the group would be blocked by federal forces when they arrived at the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which is 250 miles southeast of Mexico City and 100 miles northeast of the Mexico-Guatemala border.

 

Mexican officials said they have deported thousands of people this month, but 10,000 have made it past federal officers and intend on traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

Caravans making their way from Central America to the U.S. began grabbing national media attention last spring when a group of a few thousand people prompted executive action from President Trump. Trump responded by deploying the National Guard to the four southern border states to free up Border Patrol agents from administrative and non-law enforcement jobs.

 

Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced all asylum-seekers who apply at a port of entry must remain in Mexico while their cases are decided. That process can take two to five years.

Trump has made cracking down on immigration a priority that fueled his 2016 presidential campaign and election victory. More than 100,000 people were apprehended or presented themselves to U.S. authorities in March, according to the White House, which said it was the highest number in a decade.

 

In response to what Trump has described as a crisis, his administration has sent thousands of active-duty and National Guard troops to the border and moved border agents to handle an influx of migrants. Former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was warned not to brief President Trump on possible Russian election interference in the 2020 election, according to The New York Times.

 

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney reportedly warned Nielsen not to bring the topic up in front of the president, despite Nielsen's concern that the Russians would attempt to influence another U.S. presidential election.

 

Mulvaney reportedly said it β€œwasn’t a great subject and should be kept below [the president's] level."

 

The reported warning came amid special counsel Robert Mueller's nearly 2-year investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which expanded to a probe into whether Trump or associates cooperated in the attempt.

β€œMexico’s Soldiers recently pulled guns on our National Guard Soldiers, probably as a diversionary tactic for drug smugglers on the Border,” Trump tweeted Wednesday. β€œBetter not happen again! On April 13, Mexican troops confronted two Army soldiers in an unmarked Customs and Border Protection vehicle near Clint, Texas. The Mexican soldiers, who were armed with FX-05 Xiuhcoatl rifles, then detained, disarmed, and questioned the U.S. soldiers. A Beretta M9 service pistol was temporarily confiscated from one U.S. soldier, leaving the Americans unarmed.

 

American troops sent to the U.S.-Mexico border are required to undergo training to prepare for hazardous situation they may encounter, but there is no official protocol for handling encounters with a foreign military,

senior defense official from Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, said.

 

The official claimed the incident was unprecedented, and said the Pentagon is looking closer at the stand-off to "help us modify any instructions that we're giving the troops.”

 

"This is the first incident that we're aware of that the two militaries came together," the official told the Washington Examiner.

A New York man who formerly worked as an engineer for General Electric and a Chinese businessman have been charged by the Justice Department with economic espionage and theft of trade secrets.

 

The Justice Department says the two men were involved in a plot to steal intellectual property from GE and transfer it to China for use in companies in that country.

 

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Justice said hat Xiaoqing Zheng, 56, of New York had been charged with conspiring to steal GE's trade secrets related to steam and gas turbines, while knowing that those stolen secrets would be used to benefit the Chinese government.

 

Zhaoxi Zhang, 47, of Liaoning Province, China, was also charged Tuesday, according to the press release.

 

The two face 14 charges in total related to Zheng's efforts to steal transfer stolen data files related to "design models, engineering drawings, configuration files, and material specifications" from a GE plant in Schenectady, and to provide them to Zhang.

β€œWe will not stand idly by while the world’s second-largest economy engages in state-sponsored theft," Demers continued.

 

"As part of the Attorney General’s China Initiative, we will partner with the private sector to hold responsible those who violate our laws, and we urge China’s leaders to join responsible nations and to act with honesty and integrity when competing in the global marketplace," he added.

 

Zheng has pleaded not guilty according to the South China Morning Post.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) β€” Another visitor to Grand Canyon National Park has died after falling over the edge of the South Rim, authorities said Tuesday.

 

A 70-year-old woman fell about 200 feet (61 meters) over the rim, the second over-the-edge death this month within the confines of the park, according to Grand Canyon officials.

 

The woman had been walking about 200 to 300 feet (61 to 91 meters) off a trail along the South Rim about a mile (1.6 kilometers) east of Mather Point. Park rangers got a call just after 1 p.m. that she needed help west of a popular overlook called Pipe Creek Vista.

 

"She fell before we could undertake a rescue," said Grand Canyon spokesman John Quinley, adding that the circumstances of the call for help were unclear.

 

Quinley said the woman fell between Mather Point and the starting point for the South Kaibab Trail, two well-known and highly visited places at the park's more popular South Rim.

 

The park's helicopter and rescue team recovered the body.

 

The woman's name was being withheld until her family can be notified. Park officials didn't immediately release the woman's hometown.

 

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner will investigate the death. Still being investigated are three other deaths since March 26, two of which occurred outside the park.

 

On April 3, a 67-year-old California man fatally fell 400 feet (122 meters) from the edge of the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, near the Yavapai Geology Museum.

 

A tourist from Macau, China, fell to his death on March 28. The man was trying to take a photo at Grand Canyon West's Eagle Point β€” close to the Skywalk located on the Hualapai Reservation outside the park β€” when he stumbled and fell.

 

The body of a Japanese tourist was found March 26 in a wooded area south of Grand Canyon Village, away from the rim.

 

Only one person β€” an Illinois man β€” fell to his death in the park in 2018 after he climbed over the railing at Mather Point and fell some 500 feet (152 meters).

 

Park officials said about 12 people die each year within the park. The deaths can be attributed to everything from accidental falls to heat, as well as drownings during rafting trips on the Colorado River.

 

Grand Canyon National Park, established 100 years ago, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the U.S., drawing nearly 6.4 million visitors last year.

 

Grand Canyon West, on the Hualapai reservation, gets about 1 million visitors annually.

AT&T lost a net 544,000 premium TV subscribers, a category that includes DirecTV satellite and U-verse television customers. Analysts had only expected a loss of 385,000 customers across DirecTV and U-verse, according to research firm FactSet.

 

Pay-TV providers have been struggling to keep customers as viewers move to streaming services like Netflix Inc . AT&T has launched its own streaming service, but that too lost customers in the quarter.

 

AT&T's WarnerMedia unit, which includes Turner and premium TV channel HBO, reported revenue of $8.38 billion in the quarter, but that was short of analysts' estimates of $8.45 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

 

The company added a net 80,000 phone subscribers, beating analysts' forecast of a loss of 44,000 subscribers as it leaned on the smartphone promotions to combat competition in a saturated U.S. market.

 

But Mobility, AT&T's largest segment which includes its wireless business, had revenue of $17.57 billion during the quarter, missing estimates of $17.65 billion, as those promotions hurt phone sales for the unit.

 

Shares of the company were down about 2 percent before the bell.

These types of tweets don't help, they only add to the problem. They would be fine if POTUS actually does what he says in them but he doesn't, so they are calling his bluffs now. Happened with the budget and the wall money in Congress too. He reopened the government and gave them everything they wanted, but he still never got the money for the wall. They became emboldened. They know he can bring them down with the DECLAS, but they're obviously hedging on the fact that he hasn't and probably won't. He tweets repeatedly about this. But no DECLAS so far.

 

How many times has he tweeted he would close the border now? Quite a few times, right? He also tweeted that the caravans would not be allowed into the USA. Well…

 

The Mexicans are betting that that border is never going to be closed, no matter what anyone says. Of course they could stop the flow of the migrants but its not in their best interest to do that, and they won't do it. What are the consequences? None!
