Mechanical ventilation with application of pressure to the lung, whether positive or negative, can cause damage known as ventilator-associated lung injury (VALI)

VALI may occur in previously normal lungs or worsen pre-existing ARDS

About 1 in 4 mechanically ventilated patients develop VALI, the risk is likely higher in ARDS patients

Ventilator induced lung injury (VILI) is sometimes used as a synonym for VALI, but strictly speaking VILI is VALI when mechanical ventilation is the proven cause of lung injury

Ventilator Associated Lung Injury (VALI) can occur due to:

The Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms offers a much broader definition for zeugma by defining it as any case of parallelism and ellipsis working together so that a single word governs two or more other parts of a sentence.[14]

The zeugma is created by removing the second and third instances of "conquered". Removing words that still can be understood by the context of the remaining words is ellipsis.

A man was recently captured on video spewing racist remarks in front of the Chinese Consulate in Sydney, Australia on Monday.

One of New York City’s most iconic landmarks, Central Park, is riddled with secrets and trivia. It cost more than Alaska (the New York State legislature paid $7.4 million for the acreage) and Sheep Meadow was once, literally, a grazing ground for sheep.

And Quartz recently highlighted yet another mystery: the case of the disappearing subway tunnel beneath Central Park.

A new map released by the MTA depicts plans for the much-anticipated Second Avenue line. Instead of traveling to Astoria, Q trains will now run along northeast Manhattan, and a new W train will bridge Queens and Manhattan.

Quartz's Mike Murphy noticed a stretch of the Q that will now run beneath the park, and inquired as to whether or not this was new construction. The MTA said no—it was an existing tunnel that had appeared on maps before.

Archival maps of the New York subway system have included this “ghost tunnel” twice: Once, in the summer of 1995, and a second time during the winter of 1998. In both instances, the tunnel was used to temporarily reroute the Q train during construction. When normal service resumed, the tunnel vanished off the map.

Once a vestige of an early plan to construct a Second Avenue line in the 1970s, the underground passage—which connects 57th Street and 7th Avenue to 63rd Street and Lexington—will become a permanent part of the MTA map by the end of 2016. In the meantime, you can try to see this phantom underpass while heading North from 57th Street on the N, Q, or R.

US officer and SDF fighters killed in Daesh ambush

An officer in the US army and two fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been killed in an ambush in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ez-Zor.

White House memos warned in run-up to pandemic of up to 2M deaths, economic devastation

Top White House trade adviser Peter Navarro warned in stark terms about how deadly and economically devastating the coronavirus outbreak could be, weeks before it became a full-blown pandemic.

Navarro delivered the warnings to others at the White House in internal memos in January and February, saying that the United States could see up to 2 million deaths and trillions of dollars in economic damage…. The first Navarro memo was dated Jan. 29 and was addressed to the White House National Security Council, In it, Navarro made his case for an “immediate travel ban on China.”

“This lack of protection elevates the risk of the coronavirus evolving into a full-blown pandemic, imperiling the lives of millions of Americans,” Navarro wrote in the memo, according to the Times.

The memo reportedly warned of up to $5.7 trillion in economic costs and up to a half-million American deaths in a worst-case scenario.

In late February Navarro penned another memo, this time addressed to the president himself and escalating the warnings.

“This is the first line of defense for our health care workers and secondary workers in facilities such as elder care and skilled nursing,” Navarro wrote. “Key items include N-95 facemasks, goggles, gloves, Tyvek suits, ventilator circuits and Positive Air Pressure Respirators (PAPRs).”

Navarro, at the time, called for more than $618 million for PPE and ventilators.

A source told Fox News on Tuesday that many felt that Navarro’s February memo came off as aggressive; however, the source also said that there were some officials within the National Security Council and the White House who tracked along the same lines as Navarro.

Now, the source said, Navarro’s projections were seemingly accurate.

Last week, during a White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing, the president warned that “a very painful two weeks” were ahead.
