WHO SUSPENDS trials of Trump-chosen hydroxychloroquine drug over SAFETY RISKS for Covid-19 patients

The World Health Organization has paused the clinical trials of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine in coronavirus patients. It says the drug, notably taken and endorsed by US President Donald Trump, has raised safety concerns.

The drug’s safety data is being reviewed by a monitoring board, and the trials have been put on hold, the WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters. It was being tested as part of the Solidarity international program aimed at tackling the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UN heath body took the step out of “abundance of caution,” said Mike Ryan, the head of the organization’s emergencies program.

Irish PM criticized for appearing to violate his own social distancing guidelines during Sunday picnic

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar was harshly criticized by many in Ireland for appearing to violate his government's social distancing guidelines during a Sunday picnic in Phoenix Park in Dublin.

Varadkar's apparent indiscretion was first publicized by a Twitter user who first tweeted about Varadkar, who was alleged to be partying with a group of four who were not at least 2 meters apart, at a location more than 5 kilometers from Varadkar's residence. In order to prove his point, the Twitter user then included video.

The tweets no longer appear available on a live account, but screenshots of the tweets were carried by multiple media outlets and Varadkar's office has confirmed that the photographs were genuine and that he was, in fact, at Phoenix Park on the day in question.

At issue is the fact that Ireland remains under very strict social distancing rules, including rules that forbid any travel of more than 5 kilometers away from a person's residence, and rules forbidding anyone in Ireland from coming within 2 meters of any other person in public. Phoenix Park is approximately 8 kilometers away from Varadkar's residence.

In defense of his actions, Varadkar's office stated that during the course of the pandemic, Varadkar is staying in the semi-official residence that is available to the Irish PM, which is less than 5 km away from Phoenix Park. A statement from Varadkar's office claims that Varadkar was "complying fully" with his office's guidelines, notwithstanding the photographs that appeared to show the four men being clearly less than two meters apart.

As one Irish website, which ripped him for "yucking it up in the Phoenix Park yesterday while thousands have died in nursing homes and their families banned from attending the funerals," noted: "This man is the leader of our country and the architect of the social distancing regulations that have separated families (some of us haven't seen our mothers since Christmas) and caused the public to endure immense personal and economic hardship. And yet there he is, out in the park, without a care in the world and being cavalier at best about the regulations he expects the rest of us to follow."

Varadkar is already on the way out as prime minister after his party finished third in the Feb. 8 general election. Varadkar is serving, effectively, as a caretaker prime minister until a successor can be appointed, which is complicated by the fact that the leading popular vote getter in the elections was the controversial party Sinn Fein, whereas both other major parties have publicly pledged to refuse to form a coalition government with Sinn Fein.

Top EU diplomat: ‘end of American-led’ world order and rise of China ‘happening before our eyes’

BERLIN (AP) – The European Union’s top diplomat has called for the bloc to have a “more robust strategy” toward China amid signs that Asia is replacing the United States as the centre of global power.

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell told a gathering of German ambassadors on Monday that “analysts have long talked about the end of an American-led system and the arrival of an Asian century.”

“This is now happening in front of our eyes,” he said.

Borrell said the pandemic could be seen as a turning point in the power shift from West to East, and that for the EU the “pressure to choose sides is growing.”

He said the 27-nation bloc “should follow our own interests and values and avoid being instrumentalized by one or the other.”

But while China’s rise was “impressive,” Borrell said current relations between the Brussels and Beijing weren’t always based on trust, transparency and reciprocity.

Borrell said “we only have a chance if we deal with China with collective discipline,” noting that an upcoming EU-China summit this fall could be an opportunity to do so.

“We need a more robust strategy for China, which also requires better relations with the rest of democratic Asia,” he added.

Speaking at the same conference, held by videolink this year due to the pandemic, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas echoed Borrell’s call for greater transparency from China, an issue that has come to the fore over Beijing’s information policy during the early stages of the virus outbreak.

Germany takes over the six-month rotating presidency of the EU in July.

Earlier Sunday, the Republican National Committee (RNC), National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), and California Republican Party (CRP) sued Newsom and Padilla, alleging an executive order mandating that all state registered voters receive mail-in ballots is an “illegal power grab.”

The two scientific missions to the Red Planet both involve deploying a rover on its surface, but for Beijing, it will be a first attempt to do so. Italy: 400 North African migrants land illegally in Sicily

Roughly 400 North African migrants illegally disembarked on Sunday afternoon on the beach of Palma di Montechiar in Sicily. A mass landing of this size hasn’t occurred in Italy for years.

After being dropped off a few meters from the beach by the mother ship, the migrants dispersed into small groups and attempted to blend in with the normal population. Some were seen walking along the highway while others ran to the countryside area, La Stampa reports.

Police, carabinieri, and a military helicopter managed to track down and arrest about sixty of the migrants.

A few hours earlier, a group of 52 migrants from sub-Saharan African disembarked illegally on the island of Linosa, the smallest of the Pelagie islands. According to reports, all were detained by the carabinieri. They’re expected to be transferred to Lampedusa in the coming days.

On Saturday, two boats carrying a total of 46 Tunisian migrants were escorted to Lampedusa by coast guard patrol boats. All were disembarked at the Favaloro pier.

The same day, the Gurdia di Finanza – a militarized police force which operates under the authority of the Minister of Economy and Finance – intercepted three small boats carrying a total of 27 off the coast of Trapani, a city in western Sicily.

Between January 1st and May 22nd of this year, 4,445 migrant landings have taken place in Italy, compared to 1,361 in the same period of 2019. That’s more than a 300 percent increase in a single year.

Loudspeaker Islamic Call to Prayer May Become Permanent Fixture in Britain

Mosques across Great Britain could begin daily broadcasts of the Islamic call to prayer through loudspeakers after they were given special dispensation to play the adhan in the holy month of Ramadan.

Some 25 mosques in London and dozens more throughout the country began to use public address systems to connect with Muslims last month as they were unable to attend religious services during the coronavirus crisis.

The scheme was started by the London council of Kensington and Chelsea, which gave permission to the Al-Manaar mosque — the largest mosque in the borough — to begin broadcasting the Islamic message every night during Ramadan, an act that was previously illegal under noise pollution laws.

The move was picked up by the Waltham Forest Council in north-east London, which allowed nine mosques to play the call to prayer through loudspeakers every night and twice on Fridays to mark the Jumu’ah — the Friday prayer celebrated by Muslims) — according to the Mail on Sunday.

The Conservative leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, Elizabeth Campbell, claimed that “We’ve had a really positive response overall” from local constituents.

With the end of Ramadan, local Islamic groups are seeking to make the call to prayer a permanent fixture of life in the United Kingdom.

The imam at the Minhaj-ul-Quran mosque in Newham, East London, Allama Sadiq Qureshi, said that the Newham Muslim Forum, which represents Islamic organisations throughout the city, will be making an application following Ramadan, saying: “We want this practice to continue in the future.”

“Just one symbolic adhan per day, if Newham council allow us. Just one adhan at the day time, at dhuhr [afternoon prayer], then it will be really good,” Qureshi went on.

The Waltham Forest Islamic Association (WFIA) which played the call to prayer so loud that it could be heard within a one-mile radius of the mosque, has also called for the practice to continue.

Raja Ilyas, the general secretary of WFIA said: “My wish is that if we can recite adhan at least at Jumu’ah or one time [per day], but it’s my wish. I can’t force my wish on anybody, especially on the local council and local residents – it’s my wish being a Muslim.”

The prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman was driven in part by a desire to cover up activity related to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, according to a new report from a Washington, D.C.-based investigative journalist.

Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery was a hotbed of 9/11 activity, according to the Wayne Madsen Report (WMR), and forces close to the Bush family were concerned that a Democratic governor might get wind of the misconduct and expose it.

Mohamed Atta, who is believed to have flown American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, was among the Saudi, Egyptian, and Iranian pilots trained at Maxwell. Part of Atta's training came under the auspices of Doss Aviation, a Colorado company that was owned in part by an Alabama lawyer and entrepreneur named Mark Fuller. President George W. Bush appointed Fuller to the federal bench in 2002, and the judge went on to oversee the trial of Siegelman and codefendant Richard Scrushy.

The Bush family has long-standing ties to Montgomery. George W. Bush transferred in 1972 from the Texas National Guard to serve as political director for the U.S. Senate campaign of Montgomery businessman Winton "Red" Blount. According to WMR, Bush allies understood the Alabama political landscape and knew that a Democratic governor might pose a problem:

In 2002, Air Force Lt. Col Steve Butler, vice chancellor for student affairs at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California, stated in a letter to the Monterey County Herald that "Bush knew about the impending attacks." Butler was disciplined by the Air Force for his remarks. However, the Air Force appears to have had a good reason to silence anyone who was in a position to shine the light on Air Force culpability in 9/11 and Siegelman, a former Alabama Attorney General and later governor during the 9/11 attack was worrisome to the 9/11 plotters.

U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller owned a 43.75 percent stake in Doss Aviation, a Colorado firm that has received lucrative federal contracts. Doss Aviation helped train Mohamed Atta, according to a new article from Wayne Madsen Report (WMR).

Atta is believed to have piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Multiple reports in the mainstream press have stated that Atta trained at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, where Fuller has served as a judge in the Middle District of Alabama since his 2002 appointment by President George W. Bush.

WMR reports that Fuller's company assisted in Atta's flight training. From WMR, in a piece dated August 3-5, 2012: (WMR is a subscription site, and a link is not available to the content; we have received permission to run excerpts from the piece.)

WMR previously reported on Fuller's financial dealings with Doss Aviation, which, among other government business, had the contract to re-fuel Air Force One. Having had trained Atta, as well as Saudi, Iranian, and other Egyptian pilots to fly aircraft, the Colorado Springs, Colorado-based Doss Aviation was in a position to help carry out threats against Air Force One that were received by the presidential airplane's pilot on 9/11, specifically "Angel is next." Angel was the classified code word used at the time to denote Air Force One.

Ironically, as we reported earlier: "It is also noteworthy that the Doss Aviation active contract web page has a photo of the World Trade Center shaded in the colors of the U.S. flag. As the investigation gathered strength Saturday, unusual leads began to surface, among them the possibility that some of the hijackers may have received training at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida or other U.S. military facilities.

Two of 19 suspects named by the FBI, Saeed Alghamdi and Ahmed Alghamdi, have the same names as men listed at a housing facility for foreign military trainees at Pensacola. Two others, Hamza Alghamdi and Ahmed Alnami, have names similar to individuals listed in public records as using the same address inside the base.

In addition, a man named Saeed Alghamdi graduated from the Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, while men with the same names as two other hijackers, Mohamed Atta and Abdulaziz Alomari, appear as graduates of the U.S. International Officers School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and the Aerospace Medical School at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, respectively.

"Some of the FBI suspects had names similar to those used by foreign alumni of U.S. military courses," the Air Force acknowledged in a statement. "However, discrepancies in their biographical data, such as birth dates 20 years off, indicate we are probably not talking about the same people."

Take, for instance, another former Alabama governorRepublican Bob Riley. He has indisputable ties to GOP felon Jack Abramoff, the architect of perhaps the most brazen political crimes to ever take place on U.S. soil. In fact, Abramoff admitted in his book that he helped funnel $20 million of Mississippi Choctaw gambling money into Alabama to help Riley "beat" Siegelman in the 2002 governor's racean election marked by the mysterious overnight disappearance of Siegelman votes in heavily Republican Baldwin County. This supposedly was due to a "computer glitch," but retired Auburn University professor and researcher James Gundlach said a technical problem could not produce such a result without human intervention.

In 2008, Huffington Post's Sam Stein wrote an article about U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and his investigation of the Abramoff scandal. The article, titled "McCain Withheld Controversial Abramoff Email," shows how McCain took steps to protect one of his political allies. That ally's name was Bob Riley. From the Sam Stein piece:

On the stump, Sen. John McCain often cites his work tackling the excesses of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff as evidence of his sturdy ethical compass.

A little-known document, however, shows that McCain may have taken steps to protect his Republican colleagues from the scope of his investigation.

In the 2006 Senate report concerning Abramoff's activities, which McCain spearheaded, the Arizona Republican conspicuously left out information detailing how Alabama Gov. Bob Riley was targeted by Abramoff's influence peddling scheme. Riley, a Republican, won election in November 2002, and was reelected in 2006.

What was that information? It was an e-mail from Abramoff to fellow GOP felon Michael Scanlon. And it shows that they didn't "target" Riley to be harmed by their criminal scheme; they "targeted" Riley to take part in it. (The e-mail can be viewed at the end of this post, along with an on-target cartoon submitted by reader Michelle Looney.) Writes Stein:

In a December 2002 email obtained by the Huffington Post which McCain and his staff had access to prior to the issuance of his report Abramoff explains to an aide what he would like to see Riley do in return for the "help" he received from Abramoff's tribal clients.

An official with the Mississippi Choctaws "definitely wants Riley to shut down the Poarch Creek operation," Abramoff wrote, "including his announcing that anyone caught gambling there can't qualify for a state contract or something like that."

The note showed not only the reach of Abramoff, but raised questions about Riley's victory in what was the closest gubernatorial election in Alabama history.

The impact on Alabama politics did not end with the controversial 2002 race. Writes Stein:

Siegelman soldiered on after the 2002 loss, running again for governor against Riley in 2006. By then, the extent of Riley's connection to Abramoff was still unknown. Moreover, Siegelman was still under investigation for allegations of bribery. The inquiry, detailed in an extensive 60 Minutes report last night, raised many ethical red flags, mainly over political interference from the Bush administration, specifically Karl Rove. On June 22, McCain issued his Senate report without mentioning Riley's name. And one week later, Siegelman was convicted without the Abramoff email ever being made public.

"If you had a document that showed something that had not been reported about the financial reports and the direct expectations for that money," said a source familiar with the case, "that certainly would have called into attention the government's case against Siegelman."

The bottom line? Riley had John McCain, in the U.S. Senate, covering up his ties to Jack Abramoff. And he had Mark Fuller, on the federal bench, taking care of his prime political opponent–Don Siegelman.

This is the real story behind Mark Fuller. Yes, he is a bad guy who beat his wife in a private setting. But his behavior in the public setting was just as bad–and much more far reaching. That's where he used taxpayer dollars and a lifetime appointment to trample the U.S. Constitution.

More than half a million people have already signed a petition created by LifeSiteNews rejecting the notion of a mandatory coronavirus vaccine.

As of Saturday, the petition has created more than 532,000 online signatures. It was created in early May. The lion’s share of petition signers are from the United States, with tens of thousands in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

“The enormous response against a mandatory vaccination program for the coronavirus is truly global in nature,” said Gualberto Garcia Jones, LifeSite’s director of advocacy. “This is something people around the world are very concerned about, and which many reject.”

Jeffrey Epstein: Up to 130 people claim they could be child of dead financier with £470m fortune

More than 100 people claim they could be the offspring of the deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, who is thought to have had a personal fortune of around £470 million.

A DNA company, which set up a website called epsteinheirs.com, said as many as 130 people had come forward – including a number of Britons – since the site’s launch.

Hundreds more had been in touch with tips regarding Epstein’s possible fathering of children, The Sun reported.

Epstein, who died in a jail cell last year, was never known to have had children, but anyone able to prove the convicted sex offender is their father would be in line to claim some of his fortune, which includes a New York City mansion and a 75-acre luxury estate.

“Jeffrey Epstein was sexually promiscuous for so long that there is a reasonable chance he may have fathered a child,” the founder of DNA firm Morse Genealogical Services, Harvey Morse, said.

“He could even be a grandfather.”

If the company established a convincing lead, they would petition a US court for a DNA test to confirm the genetic link, Mr Morse added.

“About a quarter of the calls have required investigation but so far we have not felt confident to take any further.”

Though a medical examiner ruled Epstein died by suicide before be could be tried on fresh charges of sex trafficking, controversy continues to swirl around the incident in August.

Dr Michael Baden, the former chief medical examiner of New York City who was hired by the family to oversee the autopsy, has suggested Epstein may have been murdered.

“I think the evidence points toward homicide rather than suicide,” Mr Baden said during an interview with Fox News last year, noting that some bones in Epstein’s neck were broken in a way that would suggest pressures inconsistent with a hanging.

In March, a lawyer who met Epstein in the days before his death cast similar doubt on the episode.

“The reason I say I don’t believe it was suicide is for my interaction with him that day,” David Schoen said. “The purpose of asking me to come there that day and over the past previous couple of weeks was to ask me to take over his defence.”
