A flood of federal lawsuits against Giant Eagle over its coronavirus mask policy has reached more than 30 in western Pennsylvania, all claiming that the supermarket chain is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The cases, all filed by attorney Thomas Anderson since mid-May, accuse the stores of ignoring Gov. Tom Wolf’s provision that people who have medical issues that preclude wearing a mask are exempt.

However, Giant Eagle does not require its employees to wear masks if they provide medical excuses, the complaint says.

“We believe these lawsuits have no merit, said Giant Eagle spokesman Dick Roberts. “At Giant Eagle, we are committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of our Team Members and guests, while creating a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.

In the earlier suits, filed over denied-entry incidents at Giant Eagle stores across the region, customers said they have been treated like “lepers” instead of “guests,” which Giant Eagle likes to call its shoppers.

Activity within the Justice Department indicates U.S. Attorney John Durham is working to bring the first indictments as part of a criminal investigation into the Russia inquiry, according to investigative journalist John Solomon.

Solomon, a controversial reporter who similarly reported criminal investigative activity related to Durham's efforts months ago, told Fox Business host Lou Dobbs on Tuesday that people are frustrated by the wait, asserting there already is "overwhelming evidence in the public record" that crimes were committed during the Russia investigation.

Solomon, who is now the editor in chief of Just the News, faced criticism last year when his reporting on Ukraine for the Hill got swept up into the impeachment investigation of President Trump and became subject to a review that found he "failed" to identify "important details about key Ukrainian sources." Still, even as the tilt of Solomon's reporting has come into question, he does still boast insider knowledge at the Justice Department that has been borne out.

"My sources tell me there’s a lot of activity. I'm seeing, personally, activity behind the scenes of the Justice Department," Solomon said on Tuesday, adding that Durham's team "is trying to bring those first indictments, and I would look for a time around Labor Day to see the first sort of action by the Justice Department."

Solomon insisted that he is "seeing a lot of activity consistent with building prosecutions and preparing for criminal plea bargains," but also acknowledged that none of this may lead to anything.

"That doesn’t mean it’ll happen," Solomon said. "Until someone signs and until they bring them before the grand jury. You never know if it’s going to happen."

Solomon said he is hearing from defense lawyers and people "on the prosecution side" that complications with the coronavirus pandemic are "slowing down" the grand jury process.

"But everything I’m seeing on the ground, real reporting, suggests that there’s an ongoing criminal investigation intent on bringing indictments and possibly some plea bargains. The first action, the first evidence of it in the public will probably be around Labor Day. That's an awful long time to wait, but I do see activity that looks like they’re building a criminal case right now," he said.

Little is known about Durham's investigation into misconduct by federal law enforcement and intelligence officials during the Crossfire Hurricane investigation that was later wrapped into special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. The only time Durham has spoken out about the inquiry is when he released a statement in December disputing DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz's conclusion that the opening of the FBI's counterintelligence investigation in the summer of 2016 was properly predicated.

Only a few media reports have been published over the past year offering a keyhole view into the Connecticut federal prosecutor's work, including that one former FBI lawyer who altered a document related to the surveillance of a 2016 Trump campaign adviser had come under criminal investigation.

Attorney General William Barr, who is facing increasing scrutiny from Democrats concerned about the alleged politicization of the Justice Department, recently told Fox News he anticipates "developments" in Durham's investigation by the end of the summer.

Rep. Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, told Fox News late last month that it is a "good sign" that there are so few leaks coming out of Durham's investigation.

Kanye West revealed that he was struck with “chills” as he contracted the coronavirus in late February. Still, he tells Forbes that the virus’s cure lies in prayer.

Pedophiles are Predators

With the arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein is back in the news.[1],[2] Allegations that for decades, Maxwell obtained underage girls for Epstein and his high-profile guests to exploit—for purposes including blackmail—are widely known. But the problem runs much deeper.

It’s a touchy subject. Adults using children and infants for sexual gratification is a repugnant topic. Let’s not gloss over it: pedophiles are predators. No just society can excuse the predatory behavior of the sexual deviants who term themselves “child lovers” in a vain hope that society will overlook their cruel—and sometimes deadly—abuses. Severe punishment is required so they may no longer harm the most vulnerable among us.

The scope of the problem is uncertain, but according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, some 800,000 children are reported missing each year in the United States—about 2,000 daily.[3],[4] Estimates vary domestically and internationally, and few reliable statistics are available.[5] We do know that under the Trump administration, law enforcement task forces have increased prosecutions at the state and federal level.[6] The Children’s Bureau estimates that the United States had over 678,000 cases of child abuse—9 per 1,000—in 2018.[7]

Many pedophiles even select careers giving access an endless stream of young victims. These include occupations most would never suspect—clergy, coaches, counselors, teachers, scout leaders—those we have trusted with our kids’ safety.

But what happens to these babies and kids? Where are they now? What happens when they are “used up”–too physically damaged and psychologically traumatized to satisfy adult perverts? You don’t want to know.

Does there really exist a black market for child sex slaves? Is there any truth to the allegations that sometimes Child Protective Services, foster care, and Amber Alerts are accessories to these crimes? Anecdotes abound.

Yet a shocking 2005 study showed that 79% of abusers were children’s own parents, followed by the parent’s unmarried partners. A whopping 40% of child victims (counting all forms of abuse) were abused by their mothers alone, and 17% by both parents. The study found that substance abuse accompanies 70% of child maltreatment cases.[8] Should child abuse prevention efforts focus on solving substance abuse? What about broader social trends that cause dissolution of families?

Parents shouldn’t be complacent. Turning a blind eye or downplaying the problem will not save our children. We all need to become more vigilant.

What is child pornography but depictions of abuse? Both those who create, and those who consume, digital depictions of child sex abuse should be severely punished. Demand for the “genre” has surged with the advent of broadband internet.

Sweeping the problem under the rug hasn’t worked. We need accurate statistics, education, and public awareness. The solution isn’t to normalize perversion, but to prosecute the deviants—both producers and consumers.

We don’t need new laws either. There are plenty of statutes which—if robustly enforced—could quickly end the menace of child sex abuse. We need adequate funding for law enforcement to investigate and prosecute the crimes, a commitment to equal justice, transparency, and harsh sentencing for those found guilty of violating the laws of God and mankind.
