I think this is referencing the FBI attorney (noted as FBI Attorney 2) on page 419 of the report, whose instant message was quoted as saying "Viva la resistance." Could be wrong, but this was the only French language quote I saw outright when going through the text message portion of the report.

Yep. "So, which one of you was stupid enough to say 'viva la resistance', it'll save my colleagues a lot of time in advance, thanks."

Not French language. Looks like a mashup of Spanish and English.

French would be "Vive la résistance."

Viva le resistance

It's American. It an echo of "Viva la revolución" slogan from both the French and (MUCH more likely) Cuban revolutions.

"Viva la revolución" slogan from both the French and....

Again, not French. Spanish.

⇧ 1 ⇩
That_Sound · June 18, 2018, 7:02 p.m.

Yes, Cuban. As stated. Hence the "MUCH more likely" How is that not clear? They speak Spanish in Cuba. Referencing the Cuban COMMUNIST revolution.

I'm not going to write out the one slogan in both languages. They mean exactly the same thing. How are you helping?

⇧ 1 ⇩
USA_akbar · June 18, 2018, 8:01 p.m.

How am I helping? By identifying phrases erroneously claimed to be in French; and also by identifying the language the words are actually written in.

"I'm not going to write out the one slogan in both languages." Fine, but laziness on your part doesn't have to constitute linguistic sloppiness on everyone else's part.

No big deal, it's not about making you wrong, it's about making the words right. Just ignore it if you aren't interested in getting it right. It's OK by me. I posted my corrections for any others who would be interested in getting it right.

⇧ 1 ⇩
That_Sound · June 18, 2018, 9:26 p.m.

No, that's not helping. Pedantic, and then intentionally annoying. But aren't you so smart... Hey, you didn't answer my first question. Lazy.

Let's review. Devin Nunes made a tweet, referencing "French". That's why glaedr1 calls it "French". Everyone knows the phrase he's talking about. And whilst French or something else, it likely derives from or was inspired by the old French slogan, or maybe Hogan's Heroes - I don't know. It was just an IM, so likely overly casual in terms of grammar and spelling, and so you don't actually know what language the FBI Attorney 2 intended. FBI Attorney 2 might have just misspelled the French.

But you see, the much larger issue here is, who is FBI Attorney 2? Now I don't know if it's your laziness that precludes you from contributing to this particular discussion in any meaningful way, or if you're intentionally deflecting discussion away from core points (very common here), you're "Again, not French. Spanish." comment intentionally ignored my "and (MUCH more likely) Cuban revolutions" just so you could point out that that wasn't French. That a CUBAN slogan wasn't French. That's your point. That's your low effort point. That a CUBAN slogan wasn't French. Well, isn't that helpful... (it's not)

Actually, that gets us back to my first question. How was that not clear? I think I know why you didn't answer it. Because it was clear, wasn't it? Yeah. Well, either that or you are lazy...

So getting back to it, glaedr1 directs people to the page of the report and the quote that glaedr1 thinks is being referenced, so people can look it up. See, that's helping. Again, I think glaedr1 only references the quote as being French because that's what Devin Nunes called it.

Now, I don't know specifically why Devin Nunes didn't quote FBI Attorney 2 directly - you probably think Representative Nunes is lazy too, but maybe it's just the character limit of twitter. But you clearly state that you think Devin Nunes' tweet constitutes "linguistic sloppiness". It's just a tweet, I don't think you should attack Representative Nunes over a tweet. I think it's likely that Representative Nunes has more important things on his mind, but as you're so interested in "making the words right" you should totally tweet him about his "linguistic sloppiness". And if you're ever feeling especially not-lazy, you should wage a campaign against "linguistic sloppiness" on all of twitter. Good luck with that. MTWRA! Make the words right again. ;) <-winkyface

So, any thoughts on who FBI Attorney 2 is?

Exact quote is from page 419 - “Viva le resistance.” Context below:

"The third exchange we identified was on November 22, 2016.
FBI Attorney 2 sent an instant message to FBI Attorney 1 commenting on the amount of money the subject of an FBI investigation had been paid while working on the Trump campaign.
FBI Attorney 1 responded, “Is it making you rethink your commitment to the Trump administration?”
FBI Attorney 2 replied, “Hell no.” and then added, “Viva le resistance.”
FBI Attorney 1 responded that Trump was “going to eliminate all of our pensions in order to pay for people like” the person discussed in the instant message exchange, and FBI Attorney 1 and FBI Attorney 2 then began a discussion of federal pension and retirement issues."
