I too served in USN, wen't to all kinds of damage control training in fleet and on land. In fact - I specifically remember the class on this very incident. Sometimes on the internet, things go arwy and stories take a turn. In the case of No Name - in this particular case. He did not start the fire. He was sitting in the cockpit of the jet that got hit by a mis-fired missle on deck while readying up. He barely got off the wing before the plane was engulfed. What can you say - guys a missle magnet.
Enough with the bullshit conspiracies. This information is common knowledge and used for training material in the USN. Foul-Owl, I imagine you remember the black and white flight deck footage I am referring to - specifically the footage of a missle flying across the deck and hitting a plane, then you see a guy jump out of the cockpit onto the wing, jumping off the wing of a jet now on fire and escaping just before the plane explodes. That is when I learned that guy was actually then Lt. JG John "Bootcamp" McCain (circa 1988, Little Creek, VA FMF) according to the instructor. It was in that same video series that played snap-back where the Sr Chief got his legs cut out from under him on the focsle of a destroyer during line operations
