Twitter tightens account security for political candidates ahead of US election

Twitter is taking steps to tighten account security for a range of users ahead of the US presidential election, including by requiring the use of strong passwords.

 

“We’re taking the additional step of proactively implementing account security measures for a designated group of high-profile, election-related Twitter accounts in the US. Starting today, these accounts will be informed via an in-app notification from Twitter of some of the initial account security measures we will be requiring or strongly recommending going forward,” it said in a blog post announcing the pre-emptive step.

 

Last month Twitter said it would be dialling up efforts to combat misinformation and election interference, as well as pledging to help get out the vote — going on to out an election hub to help voters navigate the 2020 poll earlier this week.

 

Its latest election-focused security move follows an embarrassing account hack incident in July which saw scores of verified users’ accounts accessed and used to tweet out a cryptocurrency scam.

 

Clearly, Twitter won’t want a politically-flavored repeat of that.

 

Twitter said accounts that will be required to take steps to tighten their security are:

 

  • US Executive Branch and Congress

  • US Governors and Secretaries of State

  • Presidential campaigns, political parties and candidates with Twitter Election Labels running for US House, US Senate, or Governor

  • Major US news outlets and political journalists

 

As well as requiring users in these categories to have a strong password — prompting those without one to update it next time they log in — Twitter said it will also enable Password reset protection for the accounts by default.

 

“This is a setting that helps prevent unauthorized password changes by requiring an account to confirm its email address or phone number to initiate a password reset,” it noted.

 

It will also encourage the target types of users to enable Two-factor authentication (2FA) as a further measure to bolster against unauthorized logins. Although it will not be requiring 2FA be switched on.

 

The platform also said it would be implementing extra layers of what it called “proactive internal security safeguards” for the aforementioned accounts, including:

  • More sophisticated detections and alerts to help us, and account holders, respond rapidly to suspicious activity

  • Increased login defenses to prevent malicious account takeover attempts

  • Expedited account recovery support to ensure account security issues are resolved quickly

 

Also today, Twitter released more detail about how its platform manipulation and spam policies apply to groups seeking to coordinate to cause harm, giving the example of the conspiracy group QAnon. It began a crack down on the conspiracy group in July, when it banned thousands of accounts that had been spreading baseless BS which Twitter said had “the potential to lead to offline harm”.

John Solomon: Growing research indicates many COVID-19 cases might not be infectious at all

 

A growing body of research suggests that a significant number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the U.S. — perhaps as many as 9 out of every 10 — may not be infectious at all, with much of the country's testing equipment possibly picking up mere fragments of the disease rather than full-blown infections.

 

Confirmed cases of the disease have been the focal point of public health authorities and governments worldwide for many months, with countries across the globe working frantically to shore up their testing infrastructure and ensure that most citizens who want a COVID-19 test can obtain one with relative ease.

 

Many politicians, meanwhile — including most state governors in the U.S. — have tied reopening policies to the number of cases detected in the local community, with regions and localities often being permitted to reopen in staggered "phases" only when they have reached successively lower benchmarks of average new daily cases in the area.

 

Numerous institutions, meanwhile, have adopted testing protocols in an attempt to preempt the spread of the virus. American colleges and universities, for instance, have turned to mass testing in order to closely monitor incidences of the disease among students, particularly residential students living on campus.

 

Yet a burgeoning line of scientific inquiry suggests that many confirmed infections of COVID-19 may actually be just residual traces of the virus itself, a contention that — if true — may suggest both that current high levels of positive viruses are clinically insignificant and that the mitigation measures used to suppress them may be excessive.

 

'Cycle threshold' set very high for many tests

 

At issue is the method by which many COVID-19 tests detect a patient's viral load within a given sample. Polymerase chain reaction tests, which have been widely deployed to determine if individuals are infected with the disease, function by amplifying DNA samples to the point that an antigen can be detected and classified.

 

The "cycle threshold" is the number of amplification cycles a PCR test goes through before a target pathogen is detected. A lower cycle threshold means that a higher amount of the virus was present in the sample; a higher threshold means the machine had to work harder to detect the virus in the sample, indicating a lower viral load and more likely a non-infectious patient.

 

According to a rundown of PCR tests compiled by the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics, many manufacturers of PCR tests set the cycle threshold cutoff for a positive sample at up to around 40 cycles, a level numerous public health officials believe is guaranteed to return what are effectively false positive results that have detected fragments of the virus.

 

"I'm shocked that people would think that 40 could represent a positive," Juliet Morrison, a virology professor at the University of California, Riverside, told the New York Times in August.

 

Health authorities elsewhere have indicated similar skepticism of high-threshold tests. A spokeswoman for Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center said in June that the agency only assigns positive cases to samples with Cts of 35 or less, with authorities there believing that any samples with Cts of more than 32 are likely (though not definitely) non-infectious.

 

A team of researchers at Oxford, meanwhile, wrote in a preprint paper last week that, based on a review of various sample collections, swabs requiring more than 30 cycles were "associated with non-infectious samples."

 

Binary positive-negative test results — in which cycle thresholds are not considered — will "result in false positives with segregation of large numbers of people who are no longer infectious and hence not a threat to public health," they wrote.

 

Preprint papers have not yet been through the peer review process, so their results and conclusions can be changed prior to full publication. Yet several other research projects have indicated similar results. One, published in April by public health authorities out of France, found that "patients with Ct values equal or above 34 do not excrete infectious viral particles."

 

Similarly, a study out of Ireland seeking to determine "the duration of infectivity" of COVID-19 patients found that, of numerous samples subject to PCR testing, scientists were unable to achieve positive culture growth in any that required more than 34.3 cycles.

 

Both of those thresholds are notably smaller than the maximum number of cycles instituted by many test manufacturers, suggesting that there may be many nominally positive COVID-19 cases that are innocuous far as infectiousness and illness are concerned.

 

Echoing those concerns, researchers at Harvard in May argued that "the Ct value from positive test results, when interpreted in context, can help to refine clinical decision making," and that a cycle threshold of around 34 may be a useful tool for determining when a patient is truly infectious and when he or she is merely carrying remnants of the virus.

 

Such a policy, if implemented, could have momentous implications for public health policy in the U.S. and elsewhere. Presently, in many industries and at many institutions, a single positive COVID-19 case can result in a complete shutdown of the affected company or university or elementary school, followed by a rush to have everyone tested out of concern that the virus may have spread.

 

A greater emphasis on the cycle threshold of positive tests may preempt such disruptive policies by signaling which positive test results are truly infectious and which are detecting low viral loads at much less threat of infectivity.

 

Early indications suggest the number of clinically trivial positive cases in the U.S. might be startlingly high. The New York Times said last month that a review of the cycle thresholds of positive cases in Nevada, New York and Massachusetts indicated that "up to 90 percent of people testing positive carried barely any virus."

 

Those numbers, if extrapolated nationwide, could suggest that a significant proportion of the mitigation and preparation measures currently in place across the U.S. might be excessive relative to the actual level of infectious cases around the country.

 

Ultimately it can be difficult to determine the cycle thresholds used at laboratories across the country, making that kind of extrapolation difficult. A spokeswoman for LabCorp — one of the largest clinical laboratory groups in the world — said the company "does not include the CT value in result reporting."

 

"Our CT cutoff is based on extensive validation," she said, "and is within the accepted range to accurately identify individuals currently infected with SARS-CoV-2." The company on its website says it has performed 13.5 million COVID-19 tests, about 15% of the country's total number of tests.

 

At the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine at Oxford University, researchers stressed last month that "PCR detection of viruses is helpful so long as its limitations are understood; while it detects RNA in minute quantities, caution needs to be applied to the results as it often does not detect infectious virus."

 

"If this is not understood, PCR results may lead to restrictions for large groups of people who do not present an infection risk," they wrote.

As this 10-day period of celebration, devout prayer, reflection, and repentance commences, we are reminded of how important faith, family, and fellowship are to each of us. Particularly during these challenging times, the sense of peace and reassurance that comes with these observances has never been more important in helping us seek His wisdom and understanding as we continue to grow in our faith.

 

This year’s High Holy Days come with a sense of optimism for the people of Israel, as my Administration continues to make great strides in securing a more stable, prosperous, and peaceful Middle East region. Last month, we secured a historic agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel—the first between Israel and a major Arab country since 1994—that normalizes relations between the two countries, including the exchange of embassies and ambassadors, as well as enhanced cooperation in a broad range of fields including education, healthcare, trade, and security. POTUS to block U.S. downloads of TikTok, WeChat on Sunday

 

The U.S. Commerce Department plans to issue an order Friday that will bar people in the United States from downloading Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat and video-sharing app TikTok starting on September 20, three officials told Reuters. The officials said the ban on new U.S. downloads of TikTok could be still rescinded by President Donald Trump before it takes effect late Sunday as TikTok owner ByteDance races to clinch an agreement over the fate of its U.S. operations.

 

ByteDance has been talks with Oracle Corp and others to create a new company, TikTok Global, that aims to address U.S. concerns about the security of its users’ data. ByteDance still needs Trump’s approval to stave off a U.S. ban.

 

The Commerce Department order will “deplatform” the two apps in the United States and bar Apple Inc’s app store, Alphabet Inc’s Google Play and others from offering the apps on any platform “that can be reached from within the United States,” a senior Commerce official told Reuters. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made public.

 

The order will not ban U.S. companies from doing businesses on WeChat outside the United States, which will be welcome news to U.S. firms like Walmart and Starbucks that use WeChat’s embedded ‘mini-app’ programs to facilitate transactions and engage consumers in China. The order will not bar transactions with WeChat-owner Tencent Holdings’ other businesses, including its online gaming operations and will not prohibit Apple, Google or others from offering TikTok or WeChat apps anywhere outside the United States.

 

The bans are in response to a pair of executive orders issued by Trump on Aug. 6 that gave the Commerce Department 45 days to determine what transactions to block from the apps he deemed pose a national security threat. That deadline expires on Sunday. Commerce Department officials said they were taking the extraordinary step because of the risks the apps’ data collection poses. China and the companies have denied U.S. user data is collected for spying.

 

In a statement to Reuters, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said “we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations.”

TAIPEI/BEIJING – Taiwan scrambled fighter jets on Friday as 18 Chinese aircraft buzzed the island, including crossing the sensitive mid-line of the Taiwan Strait, in an escalation of tensions as a senior U.S. official held talks in Taipei. China had earlier announced the start of combat drills near the Taiwan Strait, denouncing what it called collusion between the island, which it claims as part of its territory, and the United States.

 

U.S. Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Keith Krach arrived in Taipei on Thursday for a three-day visit, the most senior State Department official to come to Taiwan in four decades - which China had said would prompt a "necessary response". Beijing has watched with growing alarm the ever-closer relationship between Taipei and Washington, and has stepped up military exercises near the island, including two days of large-scale air and sea drills last week.

 

With a U.S. presidential election looming in November, Sino-U.S. relations are under huge strain from a trade war, U.S. digital security concerns and the coronavirus pandemic. Taiwan said 18 Chinese aircraft were involved on Friday, a far larger number than it has previously announced for such encounters.

 

"Sep. 18, two H-6 bombers, eight J-16 fighters, four J-10 fighters and four J-11 fighters crossed the midline of the TaiwanStrait and entered Taiwan's southwest ADIZ," the defence ministry said in an English-language tweet. "ROCAF scrambled fighters, and deployed air defence missile system to monitor the activities." The ROCAF, Taiwan's air force, has scrambled frequently in recent months in response to Chinese intrusions.

 

The ministry showed a map of the flight paths of Chinese jets crossing the Taiwan Strait mid-line, which normally combat aircraft from both sides avoid passing through. Taiwan's Liberty Times newspaper said Taiwan air force jets had scrambled 17 times on Friday morning over four hours, warning China's air force to stay away. It also showed a picture of missiles being loaded onto an F-16 fighter at the Hualien air base on Taiwan's east coast. In Beijing, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said Friday's manoeuvres, about which he gave no details, involved the People's Liberation Army's eastern theatre command.

 

"They are a reasonable, necessary action aimed at the current situation in the Taiwan Strait and protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Ren said. He said Taiwan was a purely internal Chinese affair and accused its ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of stepping up "collusion" with the United States.

 

Trying to "use Taiwan to control China" or "rely on foreigners to build oneself up" was wishful thinking and futile. "Those who play with fire will get burnt," Ren said Taiwan's presidential office urged China to exercise restraint, and urged the Taiwanese not to be alarmed, saying the military had a grasp on the situation.

 

Hu Xijin, editor of China's widely read state-backed Global Times tabloid, wrote on his Weibo microblog that the drills were preparation for an attack on Taiwan should the need arise, and that they enabled intelligence-gathering about Taiwan's defence systems. "If the U.S. secretary of state or defence secretary visits Taiwan, People's Liberation Army fighters should fly over Taiwan island, and directly exercise in the skies above it," he added.

 

Chinese fighter jets briefly crossed the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait last month as the U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar was in Taipei, and last week China carried out two days of large-scale drills off Taiwan's southwestern coast. The United States, like most countries, has official ties only with China, not Taiwan, though Washington is the island's main arms supplier and most important international backer.

 

This week, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations had lunch with Taiwan's top envoy in New York. China's U.N. mission said it had lodged "stern representations" over the meeting.

New wildfire prevention bill introduced, focused on prescribed burns

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A wildfire prevention bill focused on prescribed burning was introduced to the Senate on Thursday.

 

U.S. Senators, Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash introduced the bill.

“The National Prescribed Fire Act of 2020,” would support pre-fire season-controlled burns as an essential and science-based strategy for reducing some of the hazardous fuels.

It would also give states more flexibility to regulate controlled burns in winter months so it would reduce the risk of summer wildfires.

The National Prescribed Fire Act of 2020 would establish $300 million accounts for both the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior (DOI) to plan, prepare, and conduct controlled burns on federal, state, and private lands.

The Forest Service and DOI would be required to increase the number of acres treated with prescribed burns. A workforce development program to develop, train, and hire prescribed fire practitioners, and employment programs for Tribes, veterans, women, and those formerly incarcerated would be established.

THE CRACK SENTENCING DISPARITY AND THE ROAD TO 1:1

The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 (“the 1986 Act”) initiated the disparate treatment between crack and powder cocaine.

 

At that time, crack cocaine was believed to be more problematic and dangerous than powder. Based on these mistaken beliefs, the 1986 Act authorized a 100-to-1 ratio sentencing scheme, which equated a single gram of crack with 100 grams of powder. No rationale for the ratio was discussed in the

legislative history.

 

The newly created United States Sentencing Commission simply adopted the 1986 Act’s sentencing scheme without utilizing the required empirical approach founded upon past sentencing practices. United States v. Kimbrough, 128 S. Ct. at 567, see U.S.S.G. § 1A1.1, cmt. pt. A, P3.

 

However, since then, the Sentencing Commission repeatedly acknowledged the unwarranted disparity.

 

In a series of reports, the Sentencing Commission recognized distinct problems

with the presumptions in the 1986 Act and attempted to remedy them. In 1995, the

Sentencing Commission found the crack/powder disparity inconsistent with the 1986 Act’s concerns about penalizing serious drug traffickers more severely than street-level dealers. It found that a disparity resulted in “retail crack dealers get[ting] longer sentences than the wholesale drug distributors who supply them the powder cocaine.”

 

Based on these findings, the Sentencing Commission proposed a reduction to the

crack/powder differential which would have changed the ratio from 100-to-1 to 1-to-1.

A thought about FBI Director Wray…

I still think he's playing a role. I know how hard this is to believe given his recent testimony, but he must show a distance between himself and POTUS if future charges are to have any credibility.

 

If he is really comped, he works for Barr and can be dismissed. The FBI isn't involved in the investigations as far as I can tell, so he is really irrelevant. The bad actors will be prosecuted by the DOJ after being indicted by the Durham's Grand Jury.

 

Barr seems to be doing the same thing while also talking about upholding the rule of law. Barr is really balancing on a tightrope and has been doing it well.

 

It's easy for us to pile on Wray and Barr given recent events and seeming inaction prosecuting the coup. Normies must see the FBI and DOJ as independent entities if they are to have any lasting credibility once charges are brought.

I was doing a dig yesterday that really got the hair on the back of my neck standing up. I was digging on the OWL club in Tucson, it was started by a bunch of rich miners kids in 1900. They built this fancy house in Tucson to have late night parties in called the "Owl Club" Anywoo this group of four guys buys it who just so happen to be in the business of saving owls. These environmental activist are the reason the logging industry in Arizona crashed and 500000 acres of glorious trees burnt to the ground. They forbid clearing underbrush because it disturbed the spotted owls habitat. After the fire the spotted owl came back and still lives there now. These four guys destroyed some of the most beautiful forests in AZ. It's not like we had a lot of trees to spare.

Scrooge won the land and told Mickey and the others to wait. Construction workers started to appear and Scrooge had told them that he decided to build a playground on the land and that the money Mickey raised would go to buying baseball uniforms. A couple days later, Mickey and the nephews with Scrooge would play baseball on the new playground in which Scrooge broke one of his windows to his Money Bin. Bakkela is being held on an enhanced bail of $5 million and is set to be arraigned on the indictment Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court, according to court records.

 

According to the county Sheriff’s Office, residents in the 1100 block of Quail Lane called 911 at 5:09 p.m. Sept. 8 to report that a man, later identified as Bakkela, was lighting a fire near the railroad tracks behind their home. A deputy took Bakkela into custody a short time later.

 

Detectives suspect Bakkela drove into a gated area, parked a vehicle, started a fire and then fled north before he was stopped, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Loren Culp, the Republican nominee running to unseat Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D), is pushing a conspiracy theory that many of the wildfires raging in the Pacific Northwest are the result of a coordinated arson campaign.

 

In a 13-minute campaign video posted to Culp’s YouTube late Wednesday, the gubernatorial candidate talks with two homeowners in a neighborhood that apparently was charred by the Cold Springs fire, near Omak.

 

“I know statewide there’s about 600,000 acres that have burned,” Culp said. “And a lot of them have apparently been set intentionally ― like this one. A couple people have been caught so far. Hopefully they investigate the heck out of this.”

 

“It’s something bigger,” one of the homeowners responded.

 

“To have that many fires set all over the state, it’s gotta be coordinated,” Culp added.

ANONS ALERT! Listened to the audio of Hillsdale College: The Constitution and the Rule of Law event featuring William P. Barr, Attorney General of the United States. It's 1 hr. 32 minutes long. Hillsdale's President, Larry Arnn gave a great introduction and Bill was fantastic.

 

Some notes: Bill Barr first told the student audience, (not an empty seat) that he chose to come to Hillsdale to give this specific speech because Hillsdale is one of only a handful of higher education institutions in the U.S. today where the education delivered is worth the money it costs.

 

He went into detail about Law and Order under our Constitution. Slammed the press and the bureaucracy embedded in the DOJ. For instance, he ridiculed the press reporters who ask him why he 'interferes' in investigations? His answer: Why is there only ONE Attorney General. There is too much great information to summarize but would say it was the best and clearest lecture on the subject anon has ever heard. Learned a lot. About how it is supposed to work, why it hasn't been working and what A.G. Bar and the Trump Administration is doing to make it work. Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh police arrested a man after confirming that a Raleigh hotel was set on fire Thursday.

 

Police told WRAL News reporter Rosalia Fodera a suspect was in custody after officials responded to a fire on the third floor of the Super 8, at 3801 Capital Blvd. Firefighters responded to the fire just before 8 p.m. and put it out in about 20 minutes. There were 45 firefighters who responded to the scene.

 

The man arrested, whose name hasn’t been released, was in a room with a woman and, after setting the fire, he ran to a nearby restaurant, where he was apprehended, police said. He was transported to WakeMed for evaluation. Charges were pending Thursday night.

A Hagerstown man was indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple charges related to the burning of police cars outside the Supreme Court on July 15.

 

Cody Michael Tarner, 23, of Hagerstown, Maryland was indicted for arson and destruction of government property, after he allegedly doused three Supreme Court Police vehicles with gasoline, causing two to ignite.

 

According to court documents, Tarner was observed on Supreme Court Police security camera footage parking his vehicle in an employee-only parking spot on Supreme Court property at 1 First Street Northeast. He was observed walking around the property for a few minutes before returning to his vehicle and pulling out what appeared to be a red gas canister.

San Francisco State University Professor Rabab Abdulhadi and Professor Tomomi Kinukawa are hosting the open classroom Internet event described as: “a historic roundtable conversation with Palestinian feminist, militant, and leader Leila Khaled, followed by Q&A discussion with students, activists, and scholars at 12:30-2:30 pm PST (3:30-5:30 pm New York, and 10:30pm-12:30 am in Palestine and Jordan).

 

While Leila Khaled is not a specially designated terrorist, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is a designated organization – and Khaled is a member of the terrorist organization’s politburo. Because it is an online event, there are no issues related to her admissibility to the U.S. Khaled has spoken in Europe several times (including at an EU conference in Brussels in 2017), but was denied entry to Italy the same year.

In 2014, she led a university-funded delegation of academics to the Middle East that met with Khaled and Sheikh Raed Salah, the leader of an organization that supports Hamas.

Jose Luis Pena, 51, was arrested Wednesday evening while riding a bicycle near the site of the crimes, according to San Diego police.

 

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Pena allegedly set fire to a plastic bottle filled with a flammable liquid while standing at a trolley platform in the 2500 block of Commercial Street and hurled it at a parking structure at the nearby SDPD Central Division station, Lt. Julie Epperson said.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Authorities in Oklahoma arrested more than 260 people and found five missing or endangered children in a recent investigation led by the U.S. Marshals Service, officials announced Thursday.

 

According to KOCO-TV, the two-month-long investigation, dubbed Operation Triple Beam, focused on Oklahoma City-area gang activity and involved several local and state law enforcement agencies. By the time the operation ended on Sept. 6, officials had arrested 262 suspects, including 141 confirmed to be involved in gangs, U.S. Marshals said. Their alleged crimes included homicide, assault, sexual assault, drug distribution, illegal firearm possession, arson and robbery, KOCO reported.

 

U.S. Marshals added that authorities seized about $17,000, as well as 9 kilograms of narcotics and 72 firearms during the investigation, according to KOCO. Officials also discovered five children who had been considered missing or endangered, authorities said.

 

This is more like it. The 1 or 2 individual arrests won't cut it.

Among colleagues, Robertson was respected as a dedicated agent who had a knack for quickly developing a rapport with witnesses and victims. But this empathy also meant that at times he became emotionally invested in his cases.

 

After six years working organized and white collar crime, Robertson had switched over to the FBI New York office’s C-20 unit, investigating sex crimes against children. These cases require the mental fortitude to sift through thousands of images of grotesque and often sadistic treatment of children. For that reason, the members of the C-20 squad are essentially volunteers. Under FBI rules, agents working those cases can raise their hands at any time and ask for a new assignment.

 

“They do say, before you come on this squad, be ready to lose your faith in humanity,” Robertson told the television show “Inside the FBI: New York.” But he added, “There’s a sense of satisfaction that I have not had anywhere else.”

Yes, very difficult to get any help as a white person. Went through some tough times myself. Choice was paying the mortgage or eating for the month. So after paying the mortgage we had enough money left to buy a 5 pound bag of rice and a pound of butter.

We survived the month and by the end even the pets were eating freakin' rice.

There is no help for people like us.
