>there is a powerful (though not airtight) argument that the Succession Act’s placement of the speaker in the line of presidential succession (and after her, the president pro tempore of the Senate) is contrary to the Constitution’s Succession Clause. That clause states that only an “Officer” may succeed and act as president. Most of the pertinent commentary maintains that the term “Officer” here does not include members of Congress. If that is right, Pelosi could not constitutionally “act as President,” even though the statute says she can.

'GREEDY AS HELL' — A year ago, Joe Biden told a roomful of affluent New York donors, including a top Goldman Sachs executive, that he wouldn't make them political targets because of their wealth. But over the past four months, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has done just that, labeling large corporations “greedy as hell” and saying stimulus aid should come with strings attached, such as prohibitions on stock buybacks and worker layoffs. During a campaign event in July, he called for “an end to the era of shareholder capitalism” because companies have a broader responsibility to society.

As Biden shifts left to attract progressive and young voters worried about climate change and social inequality, he's demanding more from companies. What’s less clear is how he plans to change their behavior.

Less than two weeks after his July speech, at a Wall Street fundraiser hosted by Blackstone COO Jon Gray, Biden told donors that it won’t require new laws.“It's not going to require legislation. I'm not proposing any," Biden said, according to a pool report. "We’ve got to think about how we deal people back in.”

Presidential Succession Act

On July 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act. The original act of 1792 had placed the Senate president pro tempore and Speaker of the House in the line of succession, but in 1886 Congress had removed them. The 1947 law reinserted those officials, but placed the Speaker ahead of the president pro tempore.

Throughout most of the 19th century, the Senate assumed it was empowered to elect a president pro tempore only during the absence of a vice president. But what should senators do at the end of a session? Since Congress was customarily out of session for half of each year, what would happen in that era of high mortality rates if both the president and vice president died during the adjournment period and there was no designated president pro tempore? For decades, the Senate relied upon an elaborate charade in which the vice president would voluntarily leave the chamber before the end of a session to enable the Senate to elect a president pro tempore. Fearing that the presidency might thus accidentally slip into the hands of the opposition, vice presidents occasionally refused to perform this little courtesy when the opposing party held the Senate majority.

In 1886 Congress replaced the two congressional officials in the line of succession with cabinet officers, in the order of their agencies’ creation. Proponents of this change argued that the Senate elected its presidents pro tempore based on parliamentary rather than executive skills. No president pro tempore had ever served as president, while six former secretaries of state had been elected to that office.

When the 1945 death of Franklin Roosevelt propelled Vice President Truman into the presidency, Truman urged placing the Speaker, as an elected representative of his district, as well as the chosen leader of the “elected representatives of the people,” next in line to the vice president. Since one could make the same argument for the president pro tempore, Truman’s decision may have reflected his strained relations with 78-year-old President Pro Tempore Kenneth McKellar and his warm friendship with 65-year-old House Speaker Sam Rayburn. After all, it was in Rayburn’s hideaway office, where he had gone for a late afternoon glass of bourbon, that Truman first learned of his own elevation to the presidency.

According to sources close to the matter, Abe's support group headed by the secretary in question has been hosting pre-sakura party dinner functions at hotels in Tokyo since 2013. Abe's office paid around 23 million yen to the hotels for holding the parties between 2015 and 2019, but participants were charged just 5,000 yen each, which only adds up to around 14 million yen. The former prime minister previously told the Diet, "There is no revenue or expenditure involving the supporters' group, so there is no need to include (the transactions) in political funding reports." However, investigations reportedly found that Abe's office had covered the shortfalls After receiving the criminal complaint, the special investigation unit launched a full-scale investigation around fall, and has heard from roughly 100 individuals including officials at Abe's office. With a newly elected Democratic president, this is the season of speculation, where names are being floated as potential ambassador picks. And this time around, Disney’s executive chairman Bob Iger is getting attention as a prospect for one of the highest profile foreign posts, China.

New Details Revealed About Viral Video of Nurse Fainting After COVID-19 Vaccination

A video has gone viral of a nurse fainting after being inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine with many questioning the safety of the preventative treatment.

In fact, some Facebook users who shared the video claimed that it will lead to a “mass genocide,” which, according to Reuters, is false. The nurse later confirmed that she has an ailment where she faints when she feels pain. The vaccine has undergone safety testing by Pfizer and the FDA.

In the video—which was taken after she received the Pfizer vaccine—the nurse, Tiffany Dover, was telling a reporter how excited she was to get it, but she then feels dizzy and faints. The Facebook video’s caption says, “Watch this nurse pass out after receiving the COVID vaccine. It’s so safe though, right? This will become a mass genocide if people continue to follow these rabid dictators.”

After recovering, Dover—who’s a nurse manager at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee—told WTVC-TV, “It just hit me all of the sudden, I could feel it coming on. I felt a little disoriented but I feel fine now, and the pain in my arm is gone.” She then explained her medical condition, which causes her to faint when she feels pain. A spokeswoman for the hospital told Reuters that Dover “quickly recovered” following the incident.

The CDC acknowledges on its website that people can faint from vaccines. The health institute writes that while it’s unclear why this happens, “scientists think that fainting is due to the vaccination process and not to the vaccines themselves.”

The FDA granted emergency use authorization to Pfizer, allowing it to begin distributing its vaccine in the U.S. on Dec. 11. On Friday, the FDA also approved Moderna’s vaccine for emergency use.
