Outside of all the noise, there is something tremendously wrong with the atmosphere/sun and subsequent weather, at least here locally.

2 months into spring, and we have had a total of 4 spring like days.

The balance have been at least 10 degrees above normal for highs (didn't track the lows too well-oops).

The intensity of the sun has been searing to the skin, something I have not felt before and I spend a lot of time outside.

A second bizarre death has been linked to the mysterious Arkansas suicide of the former presidential advisor who introduced President Bill Clinton to billionaire perv Jeffrey Epstein – and only Radar has the shocking details of the rapidly growing body count.

“I saw her in Mark’s office!” the business associate tells RadarOnline.com. “I was leaving and he (Middleton) was telling me that he had a very important financial meeting – and that’s the woman who came in!”

“I don’t know if there is anything connection there or not, but I know that it was shocking to me to hear she drowns while paddling in the Arkansas River,” the source said. “Then Mark mysteriously dies a few months later?”

Haynes, a mother of two from the Little Rock suburb of Maumelle, vanished on Jan. 12 after leaving a note on her kitchen island counter stating “on the water, love you all.” She was last seen by a local resident paddle boarding in a wetsuit, according to the police report obtained by RadarOnline.com.

After a massive search, her corpse was discovered four days later by a family friend – submerged in 10 feet of water!

Deep in Vatican Archives, Scholar Discovers ‘Flabbergasting’ Secrets

David Kertzer has spent decades excavating the Vatican’s hidden history, with his work winning a Pulitzer and capturing Hollywood’s attention. A new book examines Pope Pius XII’s role in the Holocaust.

VATICAN CITY — David Kertzer put down his cappuccino, put on his backpack and went digging for more Vatican secrets.

“There’s an aspect of treasure hunting,” said Mr. Kertzer, a 74-year-old historian.

 

Moments later he cut through a crowd lined up to see Pope Francis, showed his credentials to the Swiss Guards and entered the archives of the former headquarters for the Holy Roman Inquisition.

 

Over the last few decades, Mr. Kertzer has turned the inquisitive tables on the church. Using the Vatican’s own archives, the soft-spoken Brown University professor and trustee at the American Academy in Rome has become arguably the most effective excavator of the Vatican’s hidden sins, especially those leading up to and during World War II.

 

The son of a rabbi who participated in the liberation of Rome as an Army chaplain, Mr. Kertzer grew up in a home that had taken in a foster child whose family was murdered in Auschwitz. That family background, and his activism in college against the Vietnam War, imbued him with a sense of moral outrage — tempered by a scholar’s caution.

 

The result are works that have won the Pulitzer Prize, captured the imagination of Steven Spielberg and shined a sometimes harsh light on one of earth’s most shadowy institutions.

 

Mr. Kertzer’s latest book, “The Pope at War,” looks at the church’s role in World War II and the Holocaust — what he considers the formative event of his own life. It documents the private decision-making that led Pope Pius XII to stay essentially silent about Hitler’s genocide and argues that the pontiff’s impact on the war is underestimated. And not in a good way.

 

“Part of what I hope to accomplish,” Mr. Kertzer said, “is to show how important a role Pius XII played.”

 

The current pope, Francis, said “the church is not afraid of history,” when in 2019 he ordered the archives of Pius XII opened. But as Francis wrestles with how forcefully to condemn a dictator, this time Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, Mr. Kertzer has unearthed some frightening evidence about the cost of keeping quiet about mass killings.

 

Mr. Kertzer makes the case that Pius XII’s overriding dread of Communism, his belief that the Axis powers would win the war, and his desire to protect the church’s interests all motivated him to avoid offending Hitler and Mussolini, whose ambassadors had worked to put him on the throne. The pope was also worried, the book shows, that opposing the Führer would alienate millions of German Catholics.

 

The book further reveals that a German prince and fervent Nazi acted as a secret back channel between Pius XII and Hitler, and that the pope’s top Vatican adviser on Jewish issues urged him in a letter not to protest a Fascist order to arrest and send to concentration camps most of Italy’s Jews.

 

“That was flabbergasting,” Mr. Kertzer said about coming across the letter.

 

Defenders of Pius XII, whose case for sainthood is still being evaluated, have long argued that he worked behind the scenes to help Jews, and that anti-Catholic enemies have sought to stain the institution by sullying the pontiff.

 

“A more open protest would not have saved a single Jew but killed even more,” Michael Hesemann, who considers Pius XII a champion of Jews, wrote in response to the evidence revealed by Mr. Kertzer, whom he called “heavily biased.”

 

Mr. Hesemann, who is also the author of a new book about the wartime pope based on the Vatican archives, argued that the Vatican, while following its tradition of neutrality, worked to hide Jews in convents and distribute fake baptism certificates.

 

Mr. Kertzer argues that the unearthed documents paint a more nuanced picture of Pius XII, showing him as neither the antisemitic monster often called “Hitler’s Pope” nor a hero. But the urge to protect Pius’s reputation, according to Mr. Kertzer, reflects a more general refusal by Italy — and apologists in the Vatican — to come to terms with their complicity in the Second World War, the Holocaust and the murder of Rome’s Jews.

 

On Oct. 16, 1943, Nazis rounded up more than a thousand of them throughout the city, including hundreds in the Jewish ghetto, now a tourist attraction where crowds feast on Jewish-style artichokes near a church where Jews were once forced to attend conversion sermons.

 

For two days the Germans held the Jews in a military college near the Vatican, checking to see who was baptized or had Catholic spouses.

British mercenaries in Ukraine face death penalty

 

A criminal case against the foreign fighters has been sent to court

Three suspected mercenaries from Britain and Morocco, who joined the Ukrainian military and were later captured by the forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), could be facing the death penalty there, the republic’s General Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday.

 

Viktor Gavrilov, the judiciary spokesman, revealed that an investigation into the activities of “a group of foreign mercenaries” who allegedly “took part in the preparation and implementation of hostilities against the DPR,” had been completed and a criminal case had been “fully formed.”

 

“The materials of the case have been transferred to one of the republic’s courts for consideration which could result, taking wartime into account, in the application of capital punishment – the death penalty – to the accused,” Gavrilov told journalists.

 

The Prosecutor General’s Office specified that the investigation had confirmed that Brits Shaun Pinner and Andrew Hill, along with Moroccan Ibrahim Saadoun, were involved in crimes under three articles of the DPR Criminal Code: the “commission of crimes by a group of persons,” the “forcible seizure of power or forcible retention of power,” and “mercenarism.”

 

According to the DPR Criminal Code, mercenarism, which is internationally considered a crime, can be punished by imprisonment for three to seven years, and the forcible seizure of power – from 12 to 20 years. Aggravating circumstances or wartime could lead to the death penalty.

 

Russian military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said earlier that the best thing the foreign mercenaries could expect was a “long term in prison.”

 

Pinner and another alleged British mercenary, Aiden Aslin, have called on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to facilitate their exchange for one of the Ukrainian opposition leaders, Victor Medvedchuk, who had been detained by Ukrainian forces. London, however, has apparently limited itself to calling Pinner and Aslin “prisoners of war,” rather than “mercenaries,” and said they should be treated accordingly.

 

In early May, Andrew Hill published a video in which he said that after coming to Ukraine he realized “it was hell” there. He also claimed that the foreign mercenaries he was fighting with were “really bad people and sadists.”

 

“I understand everything has been done wrong and I hope for leniency from the Donetsk People’s Republic,” he said.

Ukrainian ex-president attempts to leave for Poland

 

Former president of Ukraine was spotted on the border with Poland, allegedly attempting to leave while facing treason charges

Former president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko tried to cross the border into Poland on Friday, Ukrainian media reported citing the state customs service sources. Volodymyr Zelensky’s predecessor is currently facing treason charges in Kiev.

 

Poroshenko showed up at the Rava-Ruska crossing, west of Lvov, in his Range Rover SUV on Friday evening, Ukrainian National News (UNN) and Ukrainskaya Pravda said, citing sources at the State Customs Service of Ukraine. The border guards stationed there reportedly did not want to take responsibility for deciding whether to let him leave the country. However, there was no official confirmation from the border service.

 

Photos posted on Telegram showed someone looking like Poroshenko talking with several customs agents.

 

“This is a political order that looks disgusting,”Ukrainian politician Irina Gerashchenko wroteon Telegram, noting that Poroshenko was prevented from leaving the country even though he had a valid travel letter from the parliament to attend the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Lithuania.

Poroshenko is technically still a member of the Ukrainian parliament. In December 2021, the current government charged him with treasonin the alleged scheme to buy coal from the Donbass separatists in 2014-15. He traveled to Turkey as the charges were announced, but made a show of returning to Kiev in January. A court then refused the government’s request to put him in jail, or even under house arrest.

 

Known as the “Chocolate King,” thanks to his ownership of the candy giant Roshen, Poroshenko had accumulated a substantial business empire in Ukraine during the 1990s, including shipyards and a TV channel. The TV channel, he would later tell the Washington Post, played a key role in the February 2014 Maidan uprising that ousted the elected President Viktor Yanukovich.

 

Poroshenko, who previously did brief stints as trade and foreign minister under governments led by politicians from western Ukraine, found himself the establishment candidate in the May 2014 presidential election. As president, he led the “anti-terrorist operation” to crush the Donbass separatists by force in the summer of 2014 and again in early 2015. Both attempts ended in disaster for the Ukrainian military, with Kiev agreeing to a ceasefire mediated in Minsk. Beset by scandals, Poroshenko lost the 2019 re-election bid in a landslide to Zelensky, who ran on a peace platform.

Multiple law enforcement sources from separate agencies tell Breitbart Texas that Uvalde-area police officers are receiving death threats following the Robb Elementary School shooting that left 21 people dead.

 

Officers from separate, highly-placed law enforcement agencies report that officers are receiving death threats as news media stoke the narrative that first responders waited too long to engage the Robb Elementary School shooter. Police continue the process of investigating and reporting the timeline of events throughout the campus.

 

In the absence of a formal release of all the details, many media outlets may be fueling the threats, one source argues.

 

The threats put officers and their families’ lives at risk, one source told Breitbart. The threats also distract officers from their investigative and typical duties.

 

Several law enforcement officers who responded to the shooting were parents of students at the school, other sources stated. One officer’s child did not survive while the parent was unable to make entry.

 

“Our officers had their own children in the building — one of whom was killed,” a local law enforcement official stated. “We wanted to end this as badly as anyone else. To think that we would stand around and let children die by choice is unconscionable for our officers right now during their time of mourning.”

 

One senior law enforcement source in Uvalde confirmed that the threats have been received by multiple law enforcement agencies who participated in the response to the shooting.

 

“The investigation has not been completed and there are many facts that have not been released that will provide clarification to questions the community may have, the guessing by uninvolved parties is frustrating and may be prompting these threats,” one law enforcement source told Breitbart Texas.

 

Multiple law enforcement sources revealed to Breitbart Texas that part of the delay in stopping the barricaded elementary school shooter hinged on a deadly mix of the shooter’s defensive tactics and the lack of needed tactical gear. Specifically, officers lacked the ballistic shield needed to enter the classroom with the barricaded shooter. Attempting to breach the door without a ballistic shield would have resulted in certain death for the officers and provides the shooter with the officers’ weapons and ammunition. There is also the possibility that the shooter could have taken communications gear off of the officers’ bodies, thereby giving the shooter the ability to listen in real time on police response plans.

 

Even with the shield, as reported by Breitbart Texas, one of the Border Patrol agents who rushed the shooter still suffered a grazing gunshot wound to the head. The law enforcement team did not wait for personal body armor before breaching.

 

“If the subject can effectively take out an officer, he gains one more weapon, more loaded magazines, and law enforcement communications are instantly compromised allowing the suspect to know what the next plan of attack is,” one source explained.

Jean-Pierre cited Rice’s “decades of experience” in the federal government as making her qualified to handle the issue.

 

She did not mention Rice’s role in the Obama administration’s disastrous response to the attacks on the Benghazi consulate in Libya in 2012 that left four Americans dead or her role in defending Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s service record.

 

Instead, Jean-Pierre said there was “no one better” than Rice to handle the issue.

 

“She has decades of experience coordinating interagency processes in the federal government,” she said. “There is no one better at bringing department heads to the table to drive the process.”

 

Jean-Pierre spoke about Rice as reporters repeatedly questioned the White House about whether President Biden would appoint a “czar of gun things” to find more executive actions the president could take on gun control issues.

 

“We have a whole-of-government approach that I just mentioned, that Ambassador Susan Rice is leading, along with other departments,” she said.

 

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) reacted to the news on social media.

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace (SC), who claims to still support the policies of former President Donald Trump while in a heated primary battle, trashed him during a text message exchange with a former supporter following last year’s January 6 riot.

 

In the messages obtained by Breitbart News, Mace said she “will never forgive” the former president following the January 6 riot while also claiming that her “life was threatened because of the words and actions of the President.”

 

“My life was threatened because of the words and actions of the President. Words have consequences,” Mace texted a former supporter, who leaked the messages to Breitbart News. “I cannot explain or excuse the violent attack on our Capitol… I had to walk through a crime scene to vote last night,” Mace continued.

 

“Unacceptable. Indefensible,” she added, while blaming some of her fellow Republican lawmakers for the events that happened in January 2021, the text messages revealed.

 

She wrote that the riot occurred “because of the rhetoric [Trump] and some of my Republican colleagues were using in the days leading up to this event.”

 

However, what the congresswoman conveyed in her private conversations differ from the public remarks she made at the time — which never went as far as the language used in the text messages.

 

The congresswoman, who was backed by Trump in 2020 when she successfully unseated Rep. Joe Cunningham (D-SC), publicly turned on the former president days after the riot.

 

During an appearance on MSNBC’s Meet the Press, she used the line about walking through a crime scene to vote and how it was “enormously disappointing” to see her party’s leadership and almost 150 of her Republican colleagues vote to still not certify the election, as a freshman member.

 

Her public remarks drew the ire of Trump, who called her a “sellout,” in the days after.

 

Despite all of this, in February 2022, Mace seemed to pull a 180 as she traveled to New York City to stand outside Trump Tower on Fifth Ave to record a campaign video about her support for the former president — the same person she claimed “threatened her life” a year earlier, and whom she said she would “never forgive.”

 

Trump threw his support behind Mace’s primary challenger, Katie Arrington, in the wake of her comments and as many Republicans in her district turned on her.

 

And in April 2022, amid a heated primary battle, Trump-backed Arrington called out Mace for being a hypocrite for trying to tout the former president’s border and vaccine policies in a campaign ad looking to score points with his base before the primary.

 

In response to the ad, Arrington campaign spokesman Chris D’Anna thanked the congresswoman for emphasizing her hypocrisy in a statement to Breitbart News.

 

“Nancy Mace’s new ad goes to show just how much the D.C. swamp has control of her,” D’Anna said. “She must think voters are either stupid or have short memories because not long ago, she famously appeared on Fox and CNN on the same day, hours apart and wearing the same outfit, to spew two different answers on COVID vaccines.”

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed Thursday that he would travel to Los Angeles in June for the Summit of the Americas and said he planned to meet American counterpart Joe Biden in person, adding that Biden treated him “as if I didn’t exist” during their last meeting, blaming the snub on “age.”

 

Reports had previously indicated that Bolsonaro – a staunch conservative whom Biden has repeatedly antagonized, including with a threat to destroy the Brazilian economy during a presidential debate in 2020 – would not attend the Summit due to unclear reasons. Many speculated that Biden’s poor diplomacy with Bolsonaro was a contributing factor.

 

The Summit, scheduled to take place the week of June 6, is the first of its kind since 2018 and intends to bring together members of the Organization of American States (OAS). Independent of a potential boycott by Brazil, South America’s largest economy, the leaders of several leftist Latin American countries are threatening to boycott the event if Biden does not invite Cuba to the summit.

 

The OAS Charter requires member states to be democracies, and Cuba never attended a Summit before President Barack Obama insisted on extending an invitation. Cuba used its appearances at the 2015 and 2018 Summits of the Americas to organize violent mobs to shut down discussions on promoting democracy.

 

Bolsonaro is one of the loudest opponents of the Cuban regime and communism in general in the region; no reports indicated that his potential absence from the upcoming event was related to potential boycotts by leftist nations.

Bolsonaro then added that he would meet Biden for a bilateral exchange during his upcoming time in the United States and recalled his last encounter.

 

“I met with him at the G-20 [summit in October] and he passed me by as if I didn’t exist,” Bolsonaro said, “but that is how he treated everyone, I don’t know if it’s his age.”

 

Bolsonaro added that he was not going to America “to smile, shake hands, and appear in a photo – I am going to solve problems.”

 

“I was inclined to not go. I can’t go, given Brazil’s size, just to be a frame in a picture,” he concluded.

 

The American embassy in Brasilia confirmed on Wednesday that Dodd, Biden’s representative, had met with Bolsonaro, publishing a statement from Dodd himself.

 

“President Joe Biden asked me to travel to Brazil today with a singular focus on the Summit,” Dodd wrote. “I came to reinforce our longstanding appreciation for the deep and consequential partnership that our two countries share, built on a common foundation of democracy, human rights, economic prosperity, the rule of law, and security.”

Scientific Journal Goes Woke with Editorial Calling for Gender Identity in Study Proposals

The long-respected scientific journal Nature appears to be going woke, according to an editorial on its website titled, “Nature journals raise the bar on sex and gender reporting in research: Authors will be prompted to provide details on how sex and gender were considered in study design.”

 

The editorial notes that some journals have already “encouraged” reporting on sex and gender “for years” but cited insufficient reporting of data on both sex and gender — as if the two are different.

 

The editorial says, in part:

 

To remedy this, from now on, researchers who submit papers to a subset of Nature Portfolio journals will be prompted to state whether and how sex and gender were considered in their study design, or to indicate that no sex and gender analyses were carried out, and clarify why. They should note in the title and/or abstract if findings apply to only one sex or gender.

 

Under the subheading “Accounting for sex and gender makes for better science,” the editorial continues:

 

They will also be asked to provide data disaggregated by sex and gender where this information has been collected, and informed consent for reporting and sharing individual-level data has been obtained. The changes apply to studies with human participants, on other vertebrates or on cell lines, in which sex and gender is an appropriate consideration.

 

In addition, from 1 June, four journals — Nature Cancer, Nature Communications, Nature Medicine and Nature Metabolism — will be raising awareness of the updated recommendations in letters to authors and reviewers during peer review. The aim here is to improve understanding of the degree to which sex and gender reporting is already part of study design, data collection and analysis in the research these journals publish. The journals will also evaluate author and reviewer reception of the changes so that we can iterate on them as we learn through experience.

 

The editorial cites studies on drugs and even concedes to the gender identity activists’ narrative when saying those studies have different impacts on women and men — “we recognize that not everyone fits into these categories.”

 

But Debra Soh, a sex neuroscientist, the host of The Dr. Debra Soh Podcast, and the author of The End of Gender: Debunking the Myths About Sex and Identity in Our Society, wrote in an oped how ludicrous Nature’s stance really is:

 

Nature stated that studies should acknowledge both sex and gender, defining sex as a “biological attribute” and gender as “socially constructed.” However, sex and gender are both biological. Transgender people, as well as some intersex people, identify more with the opposite sex than their birth sex, but this difference is attributable to biological influences, such as hormonal exposure in the prenatal environment. If gender was a social construct, why couldn’t transgender people be persuaded to be comfortable in their birth sex?

 

Being receptive to the concerns of minority communities is, of course, a worthwhile endeavor, but rewriting science to acknowledge 0.8% of the population frankly doesn’t make sense. As well, activists’ ideological separation of gender from sex is precisely what is eating away at scientific discovery to begin with.

 

If gender is completely detached from sex, then anyone can be a woman. This freedom to self-identify however one pleases has led to a false amnesia about what a woman is. As we’ve seen, there is no end to the absurdity as women’s sports are being destroyed, a rise in violent and sexual crime is being attributed to women due to male offenders identifying as female, and dehumanizing language such as “chest-feeding” and “frontal birth” is being normalized.

 

Soh concluded by saying she was “saddened” by academia being “debased” by putting “threats and deceit” over “knowledge and understanding,” and that once the public trust in science is lost it cannot be gained again.

Former president of Ukraine was spotted on the border with Poland, allegedly attempting to leave while facing treason charges

 

Former president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko tried to cross the border into Poland on Friday, Ukrainian media reported citing the state customs service sources. Volodymyr Zelensky’s predecessor is currently facing treason charges in Kiev.

 

Poroshenko showed up at the Rava-Ruska crossing, west of Lvov, in his Range Rover SUV on Friday evening, Ukrainian National News (UNN) and Ukrainskaya Pravda said, citing sources at the State Customs Service of Ukraine. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) proposed legislation Friday that would block federal retirement plans from joining ESG ‘scam’ investing, Breitbart News has learned exclusively.

 

Roy and other House Republicans introduced the No ESG at TSP Act, which would prevent federal workers who qualify for the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) retirement plan to invest in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing products.

 

ESG investing has served as leftists’ latest campaign to push investing towards the climate change industry and away from the fossil fuel industry. ESG investing pushes companies to invest based on criteria relating to racial, ethnic, gender identity, sexual orientation, union status, board members, or whether a company is involved in the firearms industry. It also considers a company’s political affiliation.

 

Roy told Breitbart News TSP allowing ESG investing would enable the federal government to weaken America’s energy resilience and further woke policies.

 

“ESG investing is a woke scam. It restricts the free flow of capital, undermines U.S. energy freedom to the benefit of our enemies, and advances woke racial and gender ideologies intent on dividing the republic,” Roy explained. “The upcoming changes to TSP would allow billions of taxpayer dollars to serve these ends. The federal government shouldn’t have any part in this radical nonsense, and especially shouldn’t be using your money to do it.”

 

Reps. Bob Good (R-VA), Bill Johnson (R-OH), Michael Cloud (R-TX), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Ted Budd (R-NC), Mary Miller (R-IL), and Bill Posey (R-FL) cosponsored the legislation.

 

The Texas conservative has moved to propose the legislation as TSPO intends to enable ESG investing by allowing 5,000 mutual funds through a new “mutual fund window” which will include ESG funds. TSP manages roughly $817 billion in assets, making it the largest defined plan in the world. Opening TSP to ESG investing would allow for billions of taxpayer dollars, since federal workers’ investments are often matched by agencies, to be allocated to woke companies that comply with ESG criteria.

Data from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Center for Immigration Law and Policy reveals that in the city’s Dedicated Dockets program, just one percent of border crossers are found to have valid claims for asylum.

 

Meanwhile, more than 99 percent of illegal aliens are found not to have valid asylum claims and thus are being ordered deported from the United States. More than 72 percent of illegal aliens ordered deported had failed to show up for their asylum hearings.

 

The bombshell data comes as the Biden administration has deployed an expansive Catch and Release network where more than 954,000 border crossers and illegal aliens have been released into the U.S. interior from February 2021 to April 2022.

 

Those border crossers and illegal aliens are released on the promise that they will check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and show up to their asylum hearings. the UCLA data suggests very few show up to their hearings.

 

Although more than 1.2 million illegal aliens have been ordered deported from the U.S. by a federal immigration judge, former Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan told Breitbart News that the Biden administration is deporting just one illegal alien for every 100 illegal aliens successfully crossing the southern border.

 

“The most historic illegal alien crossings we’ve ever seen in the history of this nation … in that same year, ICE had the lowest number of removals in the history of the agency,” Homan said.

He said officials used to "freak out" every time he showed up at the disused base - and wouldn't allow him near certain areas.

 

"Whenever we brought equipment that could see underneath the ground, they were freaking out," Garetano said.

 

"They would, they wouldn't want us near certain areas.

 

"We brought in geophysical equipment, which specifically is called electric resistivity or electronic resistivity imagery, which gave us the best reading we got.

Garetano said he also spoke to a man - who used the alias James Bruce - who claimed that he was taken into the secret underground facility, injected and subjected to mind control experiments.

 

Bruce also alluded to murder and the disposal of bodies - which he claimed had links to organised crime.

 

"He seemed so real to me," Garetano said.

 

"He wasn't putting on a show. He was somebody that got in a lot of trouble as a kid and his story didn't seem rehearsed and it didn't seem like he was trying to make any money from it at all. In fact he's never tried to profit off of it.

 

"He claimed that there was some kind of organized crime, linked to this and there was some kind of body disposal system that perhaps someone in his family was involved in."

 

MONSTERS AND TIME TRAVEL

It was Garetano's spine-chilling stories about the base that inspired the creators of sci-fi series Stranger Things, which was originally titled Montauk.

 

One alleged survivor Preston Nichols described operating the Montauk Chair - a mind-reading device - and said once the computer accidentally summoned up a monster from a subject's imagination, which then went on a rampage through the air base.

 

Nichols also said there were time-travel portals that sucked people to a different place and time.

 

As the new season of Stranger Things returns this week, Garetano said while some of the claims may seem far-fetched, they should not be dismissed.

 

"I'm not saying, 'Yes something happened there a hundred percent,' but I'm leaning towards that after all these years," he said.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has declared independence as Moscow warns the schism could lead to its disappearance

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) voted on Friday to declare independence and autocephaly from the Moscow Patriarchate, citing disagreements with Patriarch Kirill’s position on the Russian military operation in Ukraine. The UOC also proposed to renew talks with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), a breakaway entity whose establishment by the Kiev authorities caused a schism in 2018.

 

At a council in Kiev, the majority of UOC bishops voted to amend its Charter “testifying to the complete independence and autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church,” according to a statement published on Friday.

 

Previously part of the Russian Orthodox Church, the UOC continued to consider the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia as its spiritual head following Ukraine’s declaration of independence. In 2018, however, then president Petro Poroshenko backed the creation of the rival OCU. Even though only two bishops out of the UOC’s 90 had joined the OCU, it was recognized by the pro-Western Ecumenical Patriarchate based in Istanbul.

 

The UOC has now called for renewed negotiations with the schismatic OCU, urging it to heal the “deep, painful wound”in the body of the Church in Ukraine. For the dialogue to take place, however, the OCU needs to “stop the seizure of churches and the forced transfers of parishes from the UOC,” said the Council.

 

As a grievance against the Russian Orthodox Church, the UOC cited Patriarch Kirill’s position on the ongoing Russian military operation in Ukraine, but appealed to the governments in both Moscow and Kiev “to continue the negotiation process and the search for a strong and reasonable word that could stop the bloodshed.”

 

The Ukrainian church’s separatism would lead to “another schism in Ukraine and the beginning of a rapid process” of UOC disappearing, Archpriest Andrei Novikov of the Moscow Patriarchate told TASS on Thursday.

 

“==God forbid, if any decisions are made towards separation from the Russian Orthodox Church, this will definitely be another nationalist schism, an attempt to turn the UOC into a pocket political church= of [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky and the [Ukrainian Security Service] SBU,” said Novikov, calling such a move completely against the tradition and legacy of Orthodoxy.

 

He also noted that the bishops of some nine dioceses located in territory controlled by Russian troops opposed autocephaly, for which “there are no canonical grounds, but only the political expediency of the current moment for the Ukrainian authorities.”

 

Novikov predicts many parishes and even dioceses will leave the UOC to remain in communion with Moscow, while the Ukrainian authorities will not hesitate to take the side of the OCU in any disputes with the church that “defeated and betrayed its own cause.”

 

Nearly 80% of Ukrainians consider themselves Orthodox, with another 10% belonging to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which recognizes the Pope in Rome as its supreme leader but maintains Orthodox rites.

Authorities investigating if retired federal agent knew of Buffalo mass shooting plans in advance

Law enforcement officers are investigating whether a retired federal agent had about 30 minutes advance notice of a white supremacist's plans to murder Black people at a Buffalo supermarket, two law enforcement officials told The Buffalo News.

Authorities believe the former agent – believed to be from Texas – was one of at least six individuals who regularly communicated with accused gunman Payton Gendron in an online chat room where racist hatred was discussed, the two officials said.

The two law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation stated these individuals were invited by Gendron to read about his mass shooting plans and the target location about 30 minutes before Gendron killed 10 people at Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue on May 14.

The News could not determine if the retired agent accepted the invitation.

“These were like-minded people who used this chat group to talk about their shared interests in racial hatred, replacement theory and hatred of anyone who is Jewish, a person of color or not of European ancestry,” said one of the two law enforcement officials with close knowledge of the investigation. “What is especially upsetting is that these six people received advanced notice of the Buffalo shooting, about 30 minutes before it happened.

“The FBI has verified that none of these people called law enforcement to warn them about the shooting. The FBI database shows no advance tips from anyone that this shooting was about to happen.”

Agents from the FBI are in the process of tracking down and interviewing the six people, including the retired agent, and attempting to determine if any of them should be charged as accomplices, the two sources with close knowledge of the probe told The Buffalo News.

The two sources did not identify the agent by name and could not confirm what federal agency he worked for.

The Buffalo FBI Office declined to comment on the investigation. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Buffalo declined through a spokeswoman to comment.

Buffalo civil rights attorney John V. Elmore said it will be outrageous if it turns out that a former law enforcement officer had advance notice of the shooting and did nothing to prevent it.

“If he had advance notice, he had a moral obligation to get on the phone and try to notify someone about it,” said Elmore, who represents the family of Andre Mackniel, who was shot dead when he went to Tops to buy a birthday cake for his 3-year-old son.

Attorney Terrence M. Connors, who is representing several families who lost loved ones in the shooting, said: “As outrageous as this may sound, based upon what we are finding in our investigation, it is not surprising.” He declined to reveal the evidence his law firm has collected.

The New York Times reported May 17 that Gendron invited a small group of people into a private chat room on the messaging platform Discord to review his plan about 30 minutes before the massacre at Tops. The Washington Post reported two days later that 15 people accepted Gendron's invitation into the Discord chat room and were able to review his plan and watch his live stream video as he committed the killings.

Federal authorities are investigating if the retired agent provided information to Gendron before he went on his shooting spree, the two law enforcement officials told The News.

In addition to law enforcement sources, two other individuals with knowledge of the mass shooting investigation have also confirmed that federal authorities are looking into the former agent’s relationship to the shooter.

FBI agents are also trying to determine the identity of an individual Gendron calls “Sandman,” and “Saint Sandman” in his lengthy social media diary that appeared on Discord 30 minutes before the attack, the sources said.

In the diary, Gendron indicates Sandman counseled him on manufacturers of AR-15 semi-automatic rifles and their quality. The shooter purchased and allegedly used that type of assault rifle in the rampage, which local authorities have said was fueled by his racial hatred.

In the document Gendron posted on Discord just prior to the shooting, he references Sandman three times.

In a passage dated May 2, he quoted Saint Sandman as saying: "When the time finally comes to deal decisively with a whole host of society's problems, and not go to prison for it, you'll know. Just be ready. You have spent your entire life, from the day you were born, right up to this very moment, reading this sentence, coming to where you are right now. Look around you. Are you content with where you are right now? Are you where you want to be? If so, continue to march. If not, what are you going to do? What's your plan? Get and keep your mind, body, and spirit right. Pray. Lift. Run. Read. Shoot. And teach your kids to do those things.”

A third law enforcement source told The News they are aware of Gendron’s writings involving the quality of different rifles. The shooter ended up using a Bushmaster X-15, a version of the AR-15 rifle, police have reported.

North Pacific 'garbage patch' shows abundance of neuston organisms

 

Prior research has shown that there is an abundance of neuston in the Subtropical North Atlantic Gyre, which forms the Sargasso Sea—parts of which have been labeled the North Atlantic garbage patch, due to the huge amounts of human garbage that has accumulated there. Neuston is a term that has been coined to refer to floating lifeforms on the sea surface, and a gyre is a spiral or vortex, where water turns like clouds in a hurricane only much more slowly. Because the spinning is in the form of a vortex, material at the outer edge is pulled toward the center, which is why neuston and garbage tend to coalesce in them. In this new effort, the researchers wondered if there were similar numbers of neuston in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, which has over time come to be called the North Pacific garbage patch (NPGP) due to the large amount of human garbage floating in its center.

 

The work by the team was called the Vortex Swim—a sailing expedition in the NPGP that lasted for 80 days. The route taken by the I Am Ocean sailing vessel, was plotted using a numerical drift model—the team wanted to see what sorts of creatures were living among the densest parts of the garbage in the patch. As the ship sailed, a trawling device was dragged along behind to capture living creatures. The team also attached a General Oceanics Mechanical Flowmeter to the trawl to measure the volume of water in which the specimens were found.

 

In all the team collected 22 samples, 12 from inside the central gyre and 10 from outside, for comparison purposes. Specimens in the samples were identified and counted as were garbage samples. In studying the samples, the researchers found that as with the Atlantic Gyre, large numbers of neuston in the NPGP were concentrated near its center. They also found that concentrations of neuston were in the same proportions as the garbage.

Armand Chaput: From the CIA to UT Austin

Armand Chaput, a senior lecturer in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at UT Austin (Texas ASE/EM), encourages students to keep an open mind about their careers. In a recent lecture to a group of underclassmen, Chaput detailed the odd places his aerospace engineering degree took him—from foreign continents to a few “nonexistent” locations during the Cold War as an intelligence officer in the CIA. For many students, it was an exciting opportunity to hear the extraordinary places an engineering degree can take them, and for Chaput, it was a secret he kept from most people for many years.

“Up until 1993 I was not allowed to say anything about the CIA except what I did as an analyst,” Chaput said. “But I did a lot of other things that popped up and were were interesting.”

Chaput decided early his dream job was designing airplanes, but it almost didn’t happen. After flunking his first calculus class as an undergraduate, Chaput had to retake the course but it set him on an educational path that not only cemented his drive to succeed but enabled almost everything that followed.

“The dumbest thing I ever did was to flunk calculus and the smartest was to retake it and make an A,” Chaput said.

After graduating with his Ph.D. from Texas A&AM at age 24, Chaput served as an Army officer followed by ten years working for the CIA, where he was initially recruited to work as an aerospace system analyst. Instead, he opted to become a clandestine services officer which involved months of specialized training and overseas assignments.

“After seven straight years in College Station, I really wanted to do something more exciting so when given the option I jumped at it,” Chaput explained.

Along the way he learned conversational Japanese and worked undercover as a business consultant. His consulting experience later led to a CIA assignment as an economic analyst which he credits to his engineering education.

“My Ph.D. thesis was on matrix methods of structural analysis,” Chaput said, “and I was one of the few people at the CIA who understood matrix methods well enough to do economic input-output analysis.”

Later, Chaput returned to aerospace engineering through another analyst assisgnment involving reverse engineering of human source and spy satellite data on a Soviet bomber.

Next came an assignment to the Department of State where Chaput served as a member of the U.S. Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty negotiating team in Geneva, Switzerland. Chaput said he, “immensely enjoyed life as a diplomat.”

Chaput’s last CIA overseas assignment took him to the jungles of Africa as a member of a U.S. Air Force team searching for a crashed foreigh bomber. His CIA operational experience and jungle training helped the team find the crash site after a three week search.

Chaput said he has no regrets on the journey his career took and that, “the recipe for an interesting career is to get a good education, don’t be afraid to take risks, and have fun.”

“My early career was interesting,” Chaput said. “I had a plan but I wasn’t afraid to change it so when people said, ‘Hey would you be interested in..?’, I was often off to another adventure.’”

Before joining Texas ASE/EM, Chaput’s aerospace industry career included positions as Manager of Advanced Design and Chief Engineerof the National Aerospace Plane at General Dynamics (GD). After Lockheed Martin bought GD, Chaput led LM’s early Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle effort and served as F-35 Chief Engineer for Weight. He was also on the USAF Scientific Advisory Board.

At UT Austin, Chaput has been teaching the capstone senior aircraft design course since 2008 and serves as director of the Lockheed Martin sponsored Aircraft System Laboratory. He has also served as faculty advisor for the UT AIAA Design-Build-Fly (DBF) and Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) UAS student teams, and for the Women In Aerospace Leadership Development (WIALD) student organization. In 2016 he won an American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) award for his systems engineering education approach.

Chaput’s advice to students is to be fearless in considering career opportunities and to take chances, particularly when you’re young. He said his career has been interesting and he has no regrets.

“The world doesn’t follow your plan,” Chaput said. “The world is happening on its own and if I had stuck to my original plan, I’d probably be sitting in a recliner somewhere reading James Bond novels and wondering about what might have been.”
