Blair urged Kuwait to buy UK artillery as payback for Gulf War support

Tony Blair, the UK's former prime minister, in his late war ventures, urged Kuwait to buy London's latest artillery as payback for British support in the Gulf War, according to papers newly released.

Between 1998 and 1999, Blair lobbied for Crown Prince Sheikh Saad and called in on him during a stopover from a flight home from South Africa.

According to internal briefing notes, the UK government believed that it was “due the award of a significant defence equipment contract in recognition of its defence of Kuwait” after former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's invasion in 1990.

In January 1999, meeting minutes reveal that Blair took note of the Foreign Office officials' demands to send AS-90 155 mm howitzer as concerns rose that the arms contracts would reach the US and its M-109.

A memo, restricted from London's private secretary, Philip Barton, written to his Foreign Office colleague, Tim Barrow, covered the meeting between Blair and the crown prince. It wrote: “The prime minister raised the AS-90. It was an effective weapon, although he knew the US had offered the M-109. He hoped very much that all the support we had given Kuwait would be remembered," adding, “The crown prince said that the price of the AS-90 was very high. The prime minister pointed out that it would do the job properly. The defence minister said that they would take the state of relations with the UK into account.”

According to internal briefing notes a day before the visit, the government was "frankly disappointed" to have "won so little Kuwaiti defense business since end of Gulf war," and that it had been a "loyal friend to Kuwait over many years."

Kuwait, according to Barton, “would keep [the UK] in mind” before making a firm decision.

Blair's pressure comes as one in many attempts to get support from Kuwait. Three months earlier, a letter from the former PM to the crown prince described the AS-90 as “the best 155mm gun in the world today”, revealing its specification superiority to the US equivalent.

Blair wrote, “This order from Kuwait is very important to the UK and to our industry at a difficult time. We will await your decision eagerly.”

Two months after Blair's visit, Kuwait revealed its intention to buy US artillery.

San Diego Unified School District Board President Sharon Whitehurst-Payne defended the district's decision to return to indoor mask mandates, suggesting that students uncomfortable with wearing a mask not return to school.

"They really should wear the mask," Whitehurst-Payne said in an interview with "Good Morning San Diego" Monday, adding that students who feel uncomfortable with the mask "at that point, just not return."

The comments come after the district announced that students enrolled in summer school will be required to wear masks indoors.

"If your student is participating in summer school or other summer enrichment program, please send them to school or their program with a mask," the district said in a letter to parents, according to KUSI News. Slovenian Supreme Court Legalizes Gay Marriage After Citizens Reject Measure in Three National Referendums

Slovenia's Constitutional Court, the top court in the land, voted to legalize gay marriage despite citizens rejecting the measure in three separate national referendums.

Slovenia has become the first former communist eastern bloc country to legalize same-sex marriage, but the decision was far from democratic. Despite Slovenian citizens rejecting same-sex marriage in three separate national referendums, the country's Constitutional Court went ahead and legalized such marriages as well as authorizing adoptions from same-sex couples.

On July 8, six judges voted to legalize same-sex marriages and adoptions, while three voted against. The majority argued that a ban on same-sex marriages is unconstitutional. According to Radio France, the ruling came after two gay couples filed complaints that they could not marry or adopt children.

The judges write that their decision "does not diminish the importance of traditional marriage as a union of a man and a woman nor does it change the conditions under which people of the opposite sex can marry." Previously, Slovenians had opposed universal marriage in three separate referendum votes, the last time in 2015, with 60 percent of citizens voting against the legalization. Pope Francis had also pleaded for a "no" vote, telling Slovenes to "support the family, the reference structure for life in society." Those opposing same-sex marriage during the referendum were supported by conservative parties and the Catholic Church.

As seen in many countries, the courts bypassed the will of the people on this particular social issue. Now, the Slovenian Parliament has six months to act, but they will likely legalize same-sex marriages much sooner. Prime Minister Robert Golob is preparing to launch a new law within two weeks to ensure same-sex marriage rules comply with the top court's ruling.

When the Hungarian government institutes the will of the people and bans gay marriage and gay propaganda directed at children they're threatened with sanctions and accused by the EU of being "against democracy" and "democratic norms" but when Slovenia's top court forces the gay agenda on their people they get nothing but praise.

A tourist at the Hoover Dam shared video Tuesday showing a small explosion and black smoke.

"My goodness, something's just blown up," a woman is heard saying in the video first shared by Kristy Hairston, who said she was touring the dam Tuesday and heard an explosion.

A male's voice, perhaps the security guard or tour guide, is also heard noting the explosion and fire at the dam below.

An account for Boulder City, Nevada, later tweeted that the fire was extinguished before the Boulder City Fire Department arrived at the scene.

The Bureau of Reclamation, the federal agency under the U.S. Department of Interior, which runs the Hoover Dam, said a transformer caught fire and was extinguished by the Reclamation/Hoover fire brigade around 30 minutes later.

"There are no injuries to visitors or employees," Michelle Helms, spokesperson for the Bureau of Reclamation, told Fox News Digital. "There is no risk to the power grid and power is still being generated from the powerhouse. We are investigating the cause of the fire and will provide additional updates as they are available."

Additional details regarding the circumstances of the incident captured on cell phone camera at the hydroelectric power plant located in Clark County, Nevada, were not immediately clear.

Major incident declared across London after 'huge surge' in fires and homes destroyed on UK's hottest-ever day

Dozens of fire engines and hundreds of firefighters have been involved in tackling at least 10 separate blazes, as London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the situation "critical".

Firefighters tackling blazes which have ripped through homes and buildings in London have described the conditions as "absolute hell", on what is the UK's hottest day on record.

Residents were evacuated, people were taken to hospital and a major incident was declared by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) which was "under immense pressure" following after a "huge surge" in blazes across the capital as temperatures topped 40C (104F) for the first time.

Mayor Sadiq Khan described the situation as "critical" and said people should not be having barbecues anywhere in London today and tomorrow, including in parks and private gardens, as well as on patios and balconies.

He told Sky News: "It's not about us being the nanny state or party poopers, it's the reality of accidents happening and fires starting and spreading rapidly, in your garden, decking, homes and so forth," adding people should not be 'wild swimming' during the heatwave.

Mr Khan also said that on a normal day, the London fire service receives a total of 300-350 calls for help, but today they had more than 1,600 by late afternoon.

Dozens of fire engines and hundreds of firefighters have been involved in tackling at least 10 separate blazes today.

In the village of Wennington on the outskirts of east London, several houses were destroyed and others were severely damaged after grass fires broke out, engulfing properties, as black smoke billowed into the air.

LFB sent 15 fire engines and about 100 firefighters to the area to deal with blazes that covered a number of buildings and grassland.

Aerial footage showed flames tearing across neighbouring tinder-dry fields and approaching a historic church.

Asked what conditions were like, a firefighter at the scene replied: "Absolute hell."

Meanwhile, two people were taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation following a separate fire in Dagenham.

Sky correspondent Laura Bundock, reporting from the site in Wennington, said: "The smoke in the air is really, really thick. It was like night fell as we drove towards the village, as we came closer to the fire.

"The ground here is tinder dry, it is brittle. Walk underfoot and it crunches underneath. So any fire, any wind is going to make this spread even further."

Nearby fields were completely scorched and burning intensely. It is not known if anybody was hurt in the incident and the cause is unclear.

Elsewhere in the UK, the Leicestershire fire and rescue service has also declared a major incident "due to high demand", saying: "We will not be attending automatic fire alarms. Please only call us if it's an emergency."

100 firefighters battle blaze

LFB tweeted: "We've got 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters dealing with this blaze on The Green in Wennington."

The houses were burning close to a fire station in the village, understood to be home to around 300 people.

Pierre L'Aimable, who witnessed the fire, said it was "immense… there was so much black smoke in the air".

He told Sky News: "There are horse stables nearby and we saw those horses being evacuated, and people being evacuated. There are loads of animals being saved."

'A lot of people distressed'

Lynn Sabberton, a resident, who said she was evacuated from her home with her partner who has a lung difficulty, told Sky News: "We thought it was one of the fields that caught alight over the back of us.

"But then a neighbour rang me and said, 'oh no, it's on the green, the green has caught fire'."

The fire 'spread so quickly'

Her husband Patrick Hickey, 71, said: "We had to leave everything. We're hoping against hope that our house is still there."

It has been the hottest day on record in the UK, with provisional Met Office figures showing the temperature hit 40.3C (104.54F) in the village of Coningsby in Lincolnshire, beating the previous record of 38.7C (101.66F) registered in Cambridge three years ago.

At least 34 weather monitoring stations have exceeded the old UK record, and five have equalled it.

Scotland also provisionally recorded its highest-ever temperature on Tuesday.

It hit 34.8C (94.6F) in Charterhall in the Scottish Borders, beating the previous record of 32.9C (91.2F) recorded in Greycrook in August 2003.

Battery Replacement of Family’s EV Ford Focus Would Cost More Than Car Itself

A Florida family who just a few months ago purchased a battery-powered vehicle learned an unforgettable lesson after their car suddenly stopped working.

The parents of Avery Siwinski, a 17-year-old of St. Petersburg, spent $11,000 on a used 2014 Ford Focus Electric that had 60,000 miles at the time it was bought, WTSP-TV reported.

“In March, it started giving an alert,” Siwinski told the network. “And then we took it to the shop and it stopped running.”

After taking the car to a local Ford dealership, the family learned that the mechanical issues were linked to the vehicle’s battery, which apparently needed to be replaced.

The repair bill for the battery was a whopping $14,000, said Siwinski’s grandfather, who stepped in to help her with the car problems because her father passed away in June due to cancer.

He also noted that the figure presented by mechanics wasn’t even the total, as it didn’t include labor costs.

Doctor who treated child rape victim sues Indiana attorney general

Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an Indiana doctor who treated a 10-year-old Ohio rape victim, sent Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita notice of her intent to sue him.

Bernard previously warned Rokita to "cease and desist," arguing the attorney general's claims that she did not report performing an abortion on the 10-year-old Ohio victim were defamatory. She has insisted that she adequately reported the abortion in compliance with state law.

"Statements that Dr. Bernard has a 'history of failing to report,' which Mr. Rokita indicated would constitute a crime, made in the absence of reasonable investigation, serve no legitimate law enforcement purpose," Bernard's tort claim notice argued. "Mr. Rokita’s comments were intended to heighten public condemnation of Dr. Bernard."

The notice lays the groundwork for a lawsuit and allows for a 90-day period for the state to investigate or settle the claim, and then a lawsuit "alleging a tort against the state" can be brought forth, according to the notice. The total dollar amount of damages "is not ascertainable at this time, as the harm is ongoing," the notice further explains.

Bernard contends that Rokita's public statements have harmed her reputation and could mislead her patients about her work.

“And then we have this abortion activist acting as a doctor with a history of failing to report,” Rokita told Fox News's Jesse Watters. “We’re gathering the evidence as we speak, and we’re going to fight this to the end, including looking at her licensure. If she failed to report it in Indiana, it’s a crime for — to not report, to intentionally not report.”

Bernard also underscored that Rokita falsely claimed she has a "history of failing to report," pointing out that he could have checked her license history.

"Mr. Rokita either knew the statements were false or acted with reckless disregard of the truth or falsity of the statements. Mr. Rokita recklessly and/or negligently failed to ascertain whether the statements about Dr. Bernard’s license were true or false before making them," the notice continued.

The 10-year-old Ohio victim became subject to a media firestorm amid the intensified national debate over abortion. About a week after the Supreme Court overturned precedents guaranteeing a national right to abortion access first established in Roe v. Wade, the 10-year-old girl crossed into neighboring Indiana to receive an abortion, according to reports referenced by President Joe Biden and others.

An Ohio law permitted to go into effect after the Supreme Court ruling prohibits abortion after fetal heartbeats are detected, which can take place as early as six weeks of gestation. The 10-year-old girl was six weeks and three days pregnant at the time, the Indianapolis Star reported. She was raped by a 27-year-old man, who has since been arrested and charged with rape, per police.

The Washington Examiner reached out to a spokesperson for Rokita for comment.

Initially, fact-check organizations, including the Washington Post, struggled to verify key details of the story about the Ohio rape victim, leading to scrutiny of Bernard, who had been a source for the initial report. Since then, police announced charges against the alleged rapist, and reports indicated that Bernard reported that she performed the abortion.

Rokita recently announced plans to investigate whether Bernard violated state law by failing to report that she had performed the abortion on the victim. Her employer, Indiana University Health, conducted a review that concluded she did not flout state privacy laws. But Rokita has subsequently saidhis investigation would "remain open" despite reports that she had complied with state law.

Protests across Sudan after Hawsa, Berti land dispute

Following the death of dozens of Hausa people as a result of a land dispute between them and the rival group Berti in the Blue Nile state, thousands of Hausa people protested across multiple cities on Tuesday.

The protests are the most recent form of unrest in Sudan, as it is already reeling from months of demonstrations demanding a transition to civilian rule after Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan assumed power through a military coup.

According to the health ministry, at least 79 people have been killed and 199 wounded since the dispute broke out between the Hausa and Berti rivals. The United Nations have stated that more than 17,000 people have been displaced by the fighting with 14,000 "sheltering in three schools in Al-Damazin," the state capital.

The Forces for Freedom and Change, one of the country's civilian blocs which were ousted last year as a result of the military coup, called, during the protests, for a "One Nation March" on July 24 "to denounce tribal clashes and stand in solidarity with the victims."

Clashes between two tribes in Sudan’s Blue Nile state, at the border of Ethiopia, resulted in the death of at least 31 people according to security services reports on Saturday. Violence erupted initially on July 11 over a disputed land between the Berti and the Hausa tribes which left 31 people dead and 39 wounded, while 16 shops had been torched.

Blue Nile Governor, Ahmed Al-Omda, issued an order banning all rallies and marches for one month, soldiers were deployed and a night curfew was put in place on Saturday. As a result, protests erupted across the country in several cities. Medical sources state that hospitals have made a desperate plea for blood donations in order to treat casualties of the turmoil.

The violence erupted when the Berti tribe rejected a Hausa proposal to establish a "civil authority to supervise access to land," a prominent Hausa member told AFP on condition of anonymity. However, a senior Berti claimed that the tribe was retaliating for the Hausas' "violation" of their territories.

As much as the media and Democratic leaders have tried to hide the issue, not only are most voters paying attention to first son Hunter Biden’s money scandals, but they believe President Joe Biden cashed in and that they won’t face any charges.

In a series of new questions about Hunter Biden’s dealings with Chinese firms, 62% said that the president “personally profited from deals with Chinese-government connected companies.”

And, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports survey, 56% see no chance of federal charges for the questionable deals.

“Most voters don’t believe the president’s denials,” said Rasmussen, noting that 69% said they believe that the president was aware of at least some of his son’s foreign dealings dating back to when Joe Biden was vice president under former President Barack Obama.

“Last month, it was reported that voicemails retrieved from Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop computer showed him discussing his Chinese deals with his father in 2018. Sixty-two percent (62%) of voters believe Joe Biden personally profited from deals with Chinese-government connected companies, including 44% who think it’s very likely. Thirty percent (30%) don’t believe it is likely that the president profited from his son’s Chinese deals,” read the poll analysis.

And while the president's son has acknowledged that he is being investigated, most do not believe he will face charges.

What is especially interesting about the survey of likely voters is how many know about the scandals despite a near blackout from the legacy media.

Rasmussen found that66% are paying close attention to the Hunter Biden story, including a majority of Democrats.

Former Sydney councillor tells ICAC inquiry Chinese developer paid for his escort

A former Sydney councillor has told a corruption inquiry a Chinese property developer paid for his escort in China and secretly filmed him with the woman to "blackmail" him.

The inquiry on Tuesday was shown videos of Mr Badalati and Mr Sansom at a dinner with escorts in China in March 2013.

The videos were secretly recorded by property developer Ching Wah (Philip) Uy, whose company was the builder of a $29 million Treacy Street project in Hurstville — an 11-storey mixed-use apartment block.

In the video, Mr Badalati is seen holding hands with a woman in green pants as they enter a restaurant.

The councillor told the inquiry he believed Mr Uy paid for the escort as he could not recall paying himself.

He said he believed the developer recorded the videos to use against him in future.

"Having seen [the videos] I believe it was a blackmail tool," he said.

"And possibly used against you to influence your vote in planning decisions?" Counsel Assisting the Commission Zelie Heger said.

"Yes," he responded.

"I take it that … if this video had been shown to your family you would've been embarrassed about that," Ms Heger said.

"Absolutely," he responded.
