A pediatrician who pushed parents to get children under five vaccinated against COVID-19 has been “unceremoniously removed” from the Florida Healthy Kids Board, according to a report from Business Insider.

 

“On the same day that we began administering COVID-19 vaccine to infants and children under 5, I was removed from the Florida Healthy Kids Board for advocating for equitable access for the underserved and for pediatricians,” Dr. Lisa Gwynn, who works within the University of Miami Health System, tweeted earlier this week. “Disappointing.”

 

Florida is the only state in the union that has not ordered child doses of the COVID vaccine from the government in bulk. Instead, the Florida Department of Health says it will leave the decision to order the vaccines to individual doctors.

 

“Quite frankly, we’re just trying to advocate for things, for equitable access to the vaccine,” Gwynn told the Miami Herald. “I’m not a politician, I’m a pediatrician. And there’s no other reason for me to do what I do other than to improve the health of children in our state.”

 

But Florida Gov. DeSantis has made it clear that vaccinating young children isn’t appropriate.

 

“There is not going to be any state program that are going to be trying to get COVID jabs to infants and toddlers and newborns,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said last month.

 

The data supports DeSantis on this issue.

We’ve known for some time now that school-aged children have a COVID recovery rate of 99.997% — which is better than their mortality risk from the seasonal flu. And we know that unvaccinated children are safer from COVID than vaccinated adults of any age. Meanwhile, studies have shown that the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are more likely to cause myocarditis in young men than natural infection from COVID.

 

Earlier this year, health officials in Sweden decided against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-12, arguing that the benefits don’t outweigh the risks.

 

Even UNICEF admits that “The available evidence indicates the direct impact of COVID-19 on child, adolescent and youth mortality to be limited.” In short, there is no justification for mass vaccination of children against COVID.

Federal law already allows Federal and State law enforcement officers to protect themselves by carrying a concealed firearm, but the Federal Government can do more to cut the red tape that Federal law enforcement officers must navigate to exercise their right. The current threat to Federal prosecutors also demands an expansion of their ability to carry a concealed firearm, as allowed under the Department of Justice’s existing authorities.

A drag queen who counseled children at a “safe haven” for LBGTQ youth has been arrested charged with 25 counts of child pornography, according to a report from Penn Live.

 

Brice Williams, who worked at the “safe haven” in Harrisburg, PA, is charged with 25 counts of child pornography for at least 49 photos and 25 videos of naked, prepubescent boys. According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Williams, a Chambersburg native, downloaded the photos between May and December 2020.

 

According to reports, some of the extremely graphic images depicted adults performing sexual acts on minors. Authorities said the victims were under the age of 18, but did not provide more details.

 

The affidavit said the photo and video downloads were linked to Williams’ email and home addresses.

 

The child pornography was downloaded under the name “Ana D,” the affidavit further said. The arrested drag queen reportedly performs under an “Anastasia Diamond” stage name.

 

In July 2021, Williams sat down for an interview with Penn Live to discuss the “safe haven” for LBGTQ youth. GLO Harrisburg offers a “safe space” for “LBGTQ youth of color to do HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness work.”

 

“I feel as though this is so important because I know there are little kids like me who are queer who are Black who are still not able to look up to anyone,” Williams told PennLive. “So that’s the reason why I got into this line of work. I wanted to make … a big impact for folks in my community.”

 

In 2020, the LGBT Center of Central PA gave Williams the 2020 Rising Star Award.

 

Williams is currently being held on $100,000 bail, though he has reportedly been unable to pay. He will be held at the Franklin County Correctional Center, officials said.

Two teenage brothers drowned in a swimming pool at a New Jersey school that was being monitored by at least three lifeguards, authorities said.

 

The siblings, identified only as “Mr. Zheng and Mr. Jiang,” were in the deep end of the pool at Lincoln Community School in Bayonne on Wednesday when lifeguards noticed they were in distress and unable to resurface shortly before 8:30 p.m., Bayonne Police said.

 

Three guards jumped into the water and pulled the brothers out and administered CPR immediately, authorities said. They also called 911 and arriving paramedics arrived in minutes to aid in life-saving attempts.

But many of them reflected permanent moves to new cities and states. In fact, with around 10 percent of the population moving each year, and inadequate maintenance of voter rolls, experts say there are literally millions of bogus registrations on voter rolls all over the country. Such a situation doesn’t necessitate fraud, but it does make the situation ripe for fraud or the illegal casting of votes.

 

There were around 122,000 Georgia voters in 2020 who told the Postal Service they were moving to a new county in Georgia with a “move effective date” of more than 30 days before the election and who failed to re-register in their new county in time to be eligible to vote in the general election.

 

The secretary of state specifically instructs, citing Georgia law, that doing this means “you have lost your eligibility to vote in the county of your old residence.” Voters are required to register in the new county. “Remember, if you don’t register to vote by the deadline, you cannot vote in that particular election,” the secretary of state instructed.

 

The vast majority of the 122,000 voters who moved obeyed the law and did not try to vote in their old county. But thousands of voters appeared to break the law by casting a vote in a county in which they didn’t live. Most did so by voting absentee ballot, albeit many by early in-person absentee voting rather than mail-in voting.

 

Nearly all of these voters appeared to have voted in the wrong state house district, and more than 85 percent appeared to have voted in the wrong state senate district. Nearly two-thirds appeared to have voted in the wrong congressional district. And all of them appeared to be illegal votes in all races, since they would be ineligible to vote by law. Those who made similar moves but did not register to vote at their new address, and therefore didn’t vote, had obeyed the law.

 

The issue is important because it shows “the folks who obeyed the law didn’t get to vote, and the folks who broke it did get to vote,” Mark Davis, a Republican data expert in Georgia who raised alarms about the problem, said last year. Davis was a fighter for election integrity in a state that could be lax about enforcing its basic laws. He drew attention to several problems, including vulnerabilities enabling double voting.

 

“For years and years and years, I’ve kind of been that nerd over there that will bore you to tears talking about election integrity,” he jokes. He’s been an expert witness in five different election cases, usually dealing with problems caused by failure to place voters in their proper municipal district or related to change-of-address issues.

 

Davis shared the information with the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, which has admitted the problem, although it made excuses for the admittedly illegal votes.

 

Incidentally, it was this lawsuit that was being discussed when President Trump told the secretary of state to “find” votes. That was wrongly characterized as the president trying to pressure someone to invent a finding of problematic votes. Here’s why.

 

The latest update on these illegal votes is that evidence indicates more than 12,000 illegal votes were cast in Georgia in the November 2020 general election — exceeding the 11,779 votes that separated Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The campaign knew that the problem of illegal voting may be more than the margin of victory that Biden, which would have meant that the state would grant relief.

 

But the campaign also knew their lawsuit was being slow-tracked and that it could take more than a year to get confirmation on the numbers without help from the secretary of state. They had also listed categories of other major problems potentially affecting the margin of victory.

 

They just needed the secretary of state’s office to care about enough of the illegal votes earlier. While at least this illegal voting portion of the campaign’s lawsuit was vindicated, it wasn’t vindicated in a timely enough fashion to matter.

NYC corrections captain dies after Brazilian butt lift from bogus doc

June 5, 2022

An NYC Department of Correction captain died reportedly after traveling to the Dominican Republic to receive a Brazilian butt lift from a phony doctor once indicted for operating without a medical license.

 

Tandra Bowser-Williams, a 49-year-old corrections captain at Rikers Island, suffered a massive stroke just days after jetting off to Santo Domingo to receive a fat transfer surgery from plastic surgeon, Dr. Hector Cabral, on May 13, her husband, Curtis Williams, recently recounted to N.Y. Daily News.

 

Cabral was previously indicted in March 2011 under former New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on 10 counts of operating without a medical license and fraud and conspiracy charges.

 

He was accused of charging for consultations and medical examinations at med spas and beauty parlors in New York before luring unsuspecting patients with bargain prices to the Dominican Republic for discount cosmetic surgeries, which ultimately left many women permanently disfigured.

 

Bowser-Williams’ husband said his partner since 1996 was confident in Cabral’s abilities despite his past indictment.

 

“Her exact words to me were, ‘you’re gonna love Dr. Cabral’s work.’ I didn’t care one way or another. I accepted my wife the way she was,” he said. “Everybody is distraught. She was the heart, the lifeline of the family. The heartbeat.”

 

The Daily News reported that Cabral ultimately cut a plea deal with prosecutors that guaranteed no jail time. He was fined $5,000 and was ordered to pay $23,055 in restitution and complete 250 hours of community service in the Dominican Republic, according to the newspaper.

FBI Liars Could Still Be Held Accountable

The FBI’s representation during the March 6, 2017 meeting that the supposed intel related to Manafort and Page came from “CROWN sources,”—again, assuming the agent meant Steele—suggests the Crossfire Hurricane team deceived the DOJ from the beginning, resulting in the OI attorney representing to the FISA court that Steele’s network of sources were sources used by British intelligence. That deception also likely affected Boente’s decision to sign the second renewal application.

 

While these events occurred more than five years ago, and a five-year statute of limitations governs false statement offenses, the D.C. Circuit has held that if a defendant engages in a scheme “to falisf[y], conceal[], or cover[]up” material facts, the limitations period does not begin to run until the scheme ends.

 

In this case, then, any FBI agents involved in concealing from the DOJ during the final preparation and review of the June 29, 2017, FISA application that Steele’s sources were not “CROWN sources” or connected to his work in British intelligence could still face criminal liability.

Further, while the Sussmann trial proved memories fail—sometimes conveniently—uncovering the individuals responsible for representing Steele’s source network as connected to his past life as an MI6 agent seems a relatively straightforward venture given what we learned from the special counsel’s conviction of Kevin Clinesmith.

 

Clinesmith pleaded guilty nearly two years ago to altering an email related to Page to make it appear that Page “was not a source” for the CIA. Clinesmith’s undoing came from the fact that in preparing the FISA application and renewals, the various government actors used email to confirm details, including with Clinesmith.

 

The OIG report on FISA abuse detailed that process, noting there were many “back-and-forth exchange[s]” “between the OI Attorney and the FBI, during which the OI Attorney asked many questions about Page, as well as about Steele’s reporting and the structure and access of his source network.” “To further address reliability, the OI Attorney sought information from the FBI to describe the source network in the FISA application,” according to the OIG report. And that information-gathering process included email exchanges and written summaries of briefings.

 

Either that briefing left the OI attorney with the impression that Steele’s source network came from his MI6 work, or after the FISA court legal advisor asked, “how it was that Steele had a network of sub-sources,” the OI attorney pushed the FBI for more information. If the latter, emails likely memorialize the exchanges.

 

Whether the FBI agents affirmatively misrepresented Steele’s source network as connected to his British intelligence work in their communiques with the OI attorney, and in turn the OI attorney relayed that information to the FISA court, is unknown to us, but hopefully not to Special Counsel Durham.

 

Even if no one lied to the OI attorney and he merely assumed Steele’s source network carried over from his time with MI6, a misrepresentation to Boente during the March 6, 2017, briefing that Steele was a “CROWN source” still matters because the FISA surveillance orders were renewed two more times after that meeting.

 

That, of course, is assuming the FBI meant Steele when they referenced a “CROWN source”—something not entirely clear. More on that shortly.

During the calls, Nazzaro can be heard welcoming members of other extremist groups.

‘One-Sided’: CNN Legal Analyst Takes Aim At January 6th Hearing

A CNN legal analyst took aim at Thursday evening’s hearing held by the Jan. 6 Select Committee, calling it “one-sided.”

 

“Aprosecutor has to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, the standard for a member of Congress saying it’s a crime is they feel like saying it’s a crime,” Elie Honig, a senior legal analyst and former prosecutor said on CNN’s “New Day” Friday morning. “Also important to keep in mind last night’s presentation was bipartisan, yes, but one-sided. There was no push back, there was no cross-examination.”

 

Committee chairman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi invoked slavery in his opening statement during the hearing, which aired on multiple broadcast networks. Democrats told media outlets that they hope the hearings will influence the 2024 election, Politico reported.

 

Republicans boycotted the Jan. 6 committee after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to appoint Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled the three remaining nominees for the committee in the wake of Pelosi’s refusal.

 

The only Republicans on the committee are Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, both outspoken Trump critics.

 

“There’s been a change of tone,” Honig said. “If you think to the early days of the committee when the members were asked do you think this is a crime, they were circumspect, they would tip toe around, they would say ‘that’s not for us, the evidence will speak for itself.’ Now they’re outright campaigning to DOJ which calling the conduct illegal and criminal.”

 

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik criticized the select committee as a “sham” and “illegitimate.”

 

Honig did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.

And by “little”, I mean “no chance”… with one exception. Maybe the group of Republican and Democratic senators huddling together to find some sort of “compromise” on gun control legislation ends up including a ban on the sale of modern sporting rifles for adults under the age of 21 (Mitch McConnell, for instance, says he’s open to the idea, though he’s not encouraging Republicans to back it), but bans on commonly-owned “large capacity” magazines, storage mandates, and other provisions of the House Democrats’ anti-gun package aren’t even a part of the Senate negotiations, and based on this evening’s House vote, I’d say any attempt to raise the age limit on gun purchases is going to struggle to find support among ten GOP senators.

 

Still, that didn’t stop Nancy Pelosi from holding the performative vote on multiple gun control measures Wednesday evening, and she plans on following today’s vote with another tomorrow on a bill that would both incentivize states to adopt “red flag” firearm seizure laws and establish a federal “red flag” law as well. The incentives for state-level red flag laws are also a part of the Senate discussions, but the idea of a federal red flag law appears to have been shelved pretty early on in the talks.

 

Before Wednesday’s vote, House Democrats held an hours-long hearing featuring the testimony of some of the victims, survivors, and family members of the recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, many of whom demanded changes to federal gun laws and blamed Republican lawmakers, gun makers, and Second Amendment advocates for putting gun rights ahead of children’s lives; a claim that was roundly rejected by conservative lawmakers taking part in the committee hearing.

 

Republicans in the room offered sympathies to the victims but no indication that they intended to change their views on gun rights. Rep. Andrew S. Clyde (R-Ga.), a gun-store owner, said the tragedies “highlight the need for additional school security” and condemned Democrats for seeking to restrict firearms.

 

“While every loss of life is a tragedy, no one should weaponize or politicize these abhorrent acts to punish law-abiding citizens,” he said.

 

Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), a leading gun rights supporter among House Republicans, promoted legislation Wednesday that would put billions of federal dollars into school security programs but not touch gun laws. GOP leaders planned to force a vote on Hudson’s bill Wednesday as an alternative to the Democratic gun bill.

 

Hudson accused Democrats of “exploiting these tragedies to advance their radical gun-control agenda” and criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other leaders for inviting victims to testify and call for measures that cannot pass Congress.

 

“The bills on the floor this week would have done nothing to stop any of these tragedies, and they will never become law,” he said. “They’re exploiting the pain of these people, these children, these parents to advance their radical interests, and I say shame on them.”

Israel Strikes Military Positions In Gaza Following Rocket Attack On Ashkelon (Videos)

 

On June 18, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a series of strikes on positions of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, in the Gaza Strip.

 

The strikes were a response to a rocket attack targeted the town of Ashkelon. Palestinian fighters launched a single rocket at the Israeli town, which is located some ten kilometers to the north of Gaza, in the early morning hours. The IDF said that the rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome system.

A report by the Austin American-Statesman shows Uvalde police were in the hallway of Robb Elementary School with rifles and at least one ballistic shield within ten minutes of the start of the mass shooting by Salvador Ramos that killed 19 children and two teachers on May 24 in the small Texas town. Ramos was reportedly killed in a gun battle with police after an hour-plus wait by police to storm the classroom he was holed up in.

 

The story was broken Monday afternoon by reporter Tony Plohetski, “BREAKING: Multiple officers were inside Robb Elementary School with rifles and at least one ballistic shield at 11:52 a.m. the day of the shooting, new video and other evidence shows. They didn’t enter the classroom for another 58 minutes. More soon via @statesman and @KVUE. 1/2…Investigators believe this is significant because it indicates they had more than enough firepower and protection to enter the classroom before they did. Officers were growing impatient far sooner: “If there’s kids in there we need to go in there,” one said on body camera video.”

A few days after troops withdrew from the small town of Bucha, near Kiev, the Ukrainian authorities reported finding multiple bodies of dead civilians. What happened in Bucha is now being compared to the Srebrenica massacre – the Balkan town which became a symbol of the deadly war in Yugoslavia. Here's what should be kept in mind about this.

 

Civilian deaths are always a tragedy, without any doubt, and they need to be investigated properly. The rebellion in the Donbass and the military assault now resulting from it can be called one of the bloodiest armed conflicts in the post-Soviet space. The widespread destruction of Mariupol during Moscow's offensive, a group of Russian POWs shot by Ukrainians, and a missile attack on residential areas of Donetsk by Kiev's forces are just some of the atrocities this war has seen so far.

 

Bucha is another one on this list. In the period between February 25 and the middle of March, when Russian troops controlled this small town, it saw fierce fighting. But around the end of March, the Russians left and the Ukrainians entered the town, followed by journalists from French state media. They found dozens of dead civilians, some of which had been there, unburied, for days or even weeks, according to the journalists.

 

What happened in Bucha is undoubtedly a terrible tragedy. It is also worth mentioning that both Russia and Ukraine sought a UN Security Council emergency meeting about what has happened in the town. However, the two countries describe what happened there in opposite terms.

 

As of now, little can be said with certainty about events in Bucha. But one thing is clear – this tragedy calls for a proper investigation.

 

However, some observations can be made right away. Most of these people must have been killed by artillery fire. There are several factors that support this theory. The most evident proof is that some of the bodies were found next to what look like shell craters, as seen in the videos. Fighting took place right on the streets of Bucha. On February 27, a large Russian military convoy was hit by Ukrainian artillery fire on Vokzalnaya street. The shelling by the Ukrainian military did not stop even after Russian troops seized the town.

 

It has to be mentioned that both armies mainly use old tube and rocket artillery systems firing conventional high-explosive shells which have low target accuracy. When used in populated areas, they can easily kill someone even if they are far away from the actual target.

 

On the other hand, armored vehicles were maneuvering along the streets of Bucha all the time, which unfortunately can lead to casualties among civilians, even when the troops don’t want it to happen. Visibility from inside an armored vehicle is very low, so the odds of crushing civilian vehicles when performing sharp maneuvers are very high. Local militia units actively use civilian transport, including ambulances, something which has become a distinctive characteristic of combat operations in Ukraine. This often leads to the military firing at any vehicles they find suspicious.

 

Moreover, at least one of the bodies found on the road had their hands tied with a piece of white cloth. Oddly enough, this particular circumstance has a reasonable explanation – it is common practice to tie a corpse’s hands together for transportation, so that they don’t hang loose. The hands of killed rebel fighters, brought to a morgue in Donetsk in May 2014, were bound the same way. Back then it prompted speculation that the men had been executed.

 

And finally, it has to be said that there are always gangs of looters operating in any war, whose actions are not driven by ideology. The mass distribution of weapons among the local population has made criminal groups stronger, which is confirmed by the fact that many of the bandits seized at crime scenes were heavily armed.

 

The people whose bodies were found in Bucha, were most likely killed at various times and as a result of various occurrences, which explains, by the way, the strange indifference to the tragedy on local social media. As opposed to the reaction in the English-language press.

 

Right now, the only thing we know for sure about Bucha is that it is a terrible tragedy of war. The victims have to be mourned and commemorated, and combat actions need to be brought to an end by peace talks as soon as possible. Specific episodes of civilian deaths must be investigated properly in order to clarify the circumstances of each tragedy.

France has not received any natural gas from Russia via pipeline since June 15, according to network operator GRTgaz, after Russian energy giant Gazprom announced this week that it would reduce deliveries to Europe.

 

The Nord Stream pipeline supply reductions, according to Gazprom, are the result of repair work.

 

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister revealed, on Thursday, that most of Gazprom's European clients have switched to paying for gas in rubles.

 

France receives approximately 17% of its gas from Russia via network connections with Germany, which is heavily reliant on Russian supplies.

 

Supplies had already been cut by 60% since the beginning of the year, sending prices skyrocketing.

 

GRTgaz, on the other hand, said there was no risk to French supplies at the moment, with reserves at 56 percent capacity, compared to 50 percent in June normally.

 

Since France adopted packages of sanctions against Russia, it has increased pipeline gas imports from Spain while also increasing purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered by ship.

 

It is worth noting that much of the LNG still comes from Russia, with France being one of the country's largest buyers, according to a report released this week by the Finland-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

 

As the Ukraine crisis adds pressure, France has to deal with higher energy prices and inflation, the government already suffered from gas and power price increases not to mention providing financial assistance to low-income households.

Biden’s Push For Electric Vehicles Hits A Huge Roadblock —A New Anti-Slave Labor Law

A new law prevents supplies from China for electric vehicles and other green energy products from entering the U.S., halting a Biden administration priority, the New York Times reported.

 

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act requires proof that any products coming from Xinjiang, one of the main sources of products crucial in making batteries, were free of forced labor, the NYT reported. The law goes into effect on Tuesday.

 

President Biden is pushing to make at least 50% of vehicles emission-free by 2030 as part of his push for green energy, The White House stated in a press release.

 

Xinjiang is reportedly expanding to different areas of China where Uyghurs reside, according to the NYT. The expansion has allowed Xinjiang to acquire new deposits as the company is involved in providing many companies with electric products.

 

The Biden administration has faced obstacles in its EV initiative, including cratering revenues among auto manufacturers. Ford saw a 5% decline in revenue and a $5.4 billion loss in the first quarter after investing in the production of electric vehicles. “If you were to look at any electric vehicle battery, there would be some involvement from China,” Daisy Jennings-Gray, a senior analyst at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, told the NYT.

Ukraine fires ballistic missiles at Russian city

 

Ukraine launched three Tochka-U ballistic missiles loaded with cluster munitions at the Russian city of Belgorod, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday. It added that all three had been intercepted mid-air, but that parts of one of the missiles had hit a house.

 

Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that three people were killed and four injured overnight. He added that 11 apartment buildings and at least 39 smaller houses were damaged.

 

Gladkov later said that the death toll had grown to four. Three of the victims are Ukrainian nationals and one is a Russian citizen, he added.

 

Russian news outlet Baza later reported that two more bodies were recovered from under the rubble, raising the death toll to five. This has not yet been confirmed by officials.

 

Belgorod is located around 40 kilometers from the Russia-Ukraine border.

 

Defense Ministry spokesman Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov said that Ukraine had also sent two Tu-143 Reys drones, “loaded with explosives,” towards Kursk, another Russian city close to the border. He said both drones were destroyed by air defenses before reaching the city.

 

Konashenkov said that Ukraine targeted residential areas, which had “no military sites.”

 

The Russian authorities have repeatedly accused Ukraine of shelling cities and villages close to the border. Moscow previously warned that it would hit Ukrainian “decision-making centers, including Kiev” if attacks on Russian territory did not stop.

 

Kiev accused Russian troops of attacking residential areas and killing civilians throughout Ukraine. Moscow insists its forces are only striking military targets.

 

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has since admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the ceasefire to buy time and “create powerful armed forces.”

Apple CEO demands federal privacy law

 

Apple has previously rejected government requests to unlock its phones

 

Apple CEO Tim Cook has penned a letter to the US Congress urging lawmakers to enact federal privacy legislation. The law being requested would forbid app developers from passing user data to third parties without consent, and would crack down on targeted advertising. Apple is apparently better positioned than its competitors to comply with such a law.

 

Cook met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Thursday, and on Friday sent a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Commerce committees, three of whom have collaborated on a draft privacy bill released earlier this month.

 

“At Apple, we believe privacy is a fundamental human right,” Cook wrote. “It is why we have consistently advocated for comprehensive privacy legislation and contributed to the process whenever possible.”

 

Cook boasted about his own company’s minimal data collection, but wrote that “only Congress can provide strong privacy protections for all Americans. The continued absence of this important legislation will unfortunately perpetuate a patchwork approach to privacy rights that leaves too many without the rigorous standards we hope to see.”

 

In the absence of federal privacy legislation, individual states set their own data privacy laws. Only five states – California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia – have passed laws granting people the right to access and delete personal information and to opt out of the sale of this personal information, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

 

In its current draft form, the American Data Privacy and Protection Act would require tech firms to collect only data deemed “necessary,” and would require these companies to ask users to opt in to the sharing of this data with third parties, such as advertisers and market researchers. Consumers would have the right to view and delete data held by tech firms, and firms engaged in targeted advertising to minors would be “expressly prohibited.”

 

By encouraging such a bill to be passed, Apple would likely be giving itself a leg up over the competition, according to an article in Mashable on Saturday. The tech site argued that other firms would need longer to adapt to any potential regulation, and that Apple has already profited handsomely by marketing itself as more privacy-conscious than rivals Facebook and Google.

 

Most notably, Apple in 2016 resisted pressure from the FBI to unlock an iPhone used by one of the shooters responsible for a massacre in San Bernardino, California. A day before the FBI was due to take Apple to court, the agency backed off, having found an Israeli firm able and willing to crack the phone.

 

Yet Cook’s company does not support every attempt by Congress to regulate its industry. Antitrust legislation currently working its way through the Senate would force Apple to allow competing app stores on its devices, which would break its monopoly over which apps iPhone and iPad users can install. Although Cook lobbied against this legislation, claiming that it would allow unsafe and “data hungry” apps onto Apple devices, the bill is reportedly expected to pass as early as this month.

In his concurring opinion backing the Supreme Court's decision last week to overturn Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the nation's highest court should reconsider past rulings that established constitutional rights to contraception, private sexual acts, and same-sex marriage.

 

The Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment guarantees that no state shall "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law." In the 1973 Roe decision, the court cited this clause to argue there's a constitutional right to an abortion.

 

However, Thomas wrote, the right to abortion under that clause "is neither 'deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition' nor 'implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.'"

 

He then pointed to three past "demonstrably erroneous decisions" by the Supreme Court that were also based on interpretations of the Due Process Clause and should be revisited. Those cases are: Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), which said married couples have the right to obtain contraceptives; Lawrence v. Texas (2003), which said criminal punishment for sodomy is unconstitutional; and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), which said there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

 

"In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell," wrote Thomas. "Because any substantive due process decision is 'demonstrably erroneous' … we have a duty to 'correct the error' established in those precedents."

UK Govt Decided Not to Deport Pakistani Grooming Gang Kingpin Four Years Ago

 

The British government has been revealed to have decided four years ago to not deport the ringleader of a child rape grooming gang in Rochdale from the UK after he renounced his citizenship in his native Pakistan.

 

During a deportation tribunal for his fellow child rapists, Abdul Aziz, 51, was revealed to have successfully secured his status in the UK four years ago despite previously losing an appeal against the government stripping of his UK citizenship.

 

The ongoing tribunal for fellow Pakistani national Rochdale grooming gang members Adil Khan, 51 and Qari Abdul Rauf, 52, heard that Abdul Aziz renounced his Pakistani citizenship on July 13, 2018, just five days before all three rapists lost the right to retain their UK citizenship.

 

Because of this, then Home Secretary Sajid Javid made the decision “not to make a deprivation order in respect of you,” thereby allowing Aziz to retain his British nationality and therefore avoid deportation, The Daily Mail reported.

 

Aziz, referred to by other members of the Rochdale grooming gang as “The Master”, was jailed for nine years in 2012. He was convicted of trafficking and sexually exploiting a 15-year-old girl, whom he took around apartments in Rochdale where she was plied with vodka and drugs and forced to have sex with other men in exchange for money.

 

In 2015, then-Home Secretary Theresa May ruled that all three men should lose their British citizenship due to the heinous nature of their crimes, saying it would be “conducive to the public good” to revoke their right to remain in the country.

 

The failure of successive conservative governments to deport the Pakistani child rapists has been a subject of controversy, perhaps explaining why the government kept it secret that it had granted Aziz the right to remain in Britain.

 

Commenting on the failure to deport the groomers, former detective turned rape gang whistleblower Maggie Oliver said: “All three of them should have been kicked out of the country as soon as they were released from prison.

 

“Instead, they’ve been given hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal aid to pay for clever lawyers who seek to defend the indefensible.

Barristers representing Adil Khan and Qari Abdul Rauf argued that they should receive the same treatment as Aziz and be able to stay in the country, despite the fact that they attempted to use the same loophole of renouncing their Pakistani citizenship months after their appeal.

Moscow claims it sees ‘true’ plans behind Ukrainian grain coalition

The proposal to put together an international naval coalition to escort ships with Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea is, in reality, one that pursues a completely different goal, Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

 

“The attempts to organize some kind of international coalition for the implementation of these procedures are aimed solely at interfering in the Black Sea region under the auspices of the UN. And we see this quite clearly,” Lavrov pointed out, following talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran on Thursday.

 

The idea of sending into the Black Sea the warships of the countries allegedly affected by grain shortages caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, has been floated by Lithuanian FM Gabrielius Landsbergis during his trip to London in late May. According to the media, the British authorities had voiced support, in principle, for such a mission.

 

There’s no problem with exporting grain without putting together any such schemes,” the Russian foreign minister assured his audience.

 

He reiterated that Moscow guarantees the security of vessels with grain in international waters all the way to the Bosphorus strait, a key access channel controlled by Ankara. “We have understanding on this issue with Turkey,” Lavrov said.

 

Ukraine is a major exporter of grain but its ships have been unable to put to sea since the launch of the Russian military operation in the country in late February. Kiev and the West are blaming Moscow for blocking their passage, while Russia insists that logistical problems have been created by naval mines placed by Ukraine itself.

 

“The efforts that are now being undertaken by both Turkey and the UN Secretary General [Antonio Guterres] would’ve been a success a long time ago if Ukraine and its Western masters had solved the problem of demining ports in the Black Sea,” Russia’s top diplomat pointed out.

 

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Thursday also addressed the issue of helping Ukrainian grain leave the ports, saying that it would require “an international effort.”

 

The UK Foreign Secretary, who was speaking after talks with Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, has claimed that a failure to swiftly resolve the grain-transport deadlock “will cause great famine.”

 

“[Russian President Vladimir] Putin is weaponizing hunger, he’s using food security as a callous tool of war. He’s blocked Ukrainian ports, and is stopping 20 million tonnes of grain being exported across the globe, holding the world to ransom,” Truss said.

 

Lavrov had previously blamed the West for exaggerating the issues surrounding Ukrainian grain, pointing out that the blocked supplies accounted for “less than 1% of the global production of wheat and other cereals.”

 

“Therefore, the current situation with Ukrainian grain has nothing to do with the food crisis,” he said, speaking a few weeks ago.

Boris Yeltsin (sp?) gave him a hot potato to handle, and he's been able to do some impressive work on a huge region that is very complex (including demographically, they have some 100+ different ethnicities living in the federation's territory).
