A: While intermediary liability regulations, on a whole, tend to shield the Foundation and its trustees from a general monitoring obligation over the content shared on the Network, many jurisdictions do have exemptions from intermediary liability provisions for terrorist and CSAM content.

 

Additionally, there are jurisdictions which are proposing or already have imposed senior management liability provisions, which are regulations which hold senior management and directors accountable for grievous misuses of their networks for illegal content. As the UK, where MaidSafe is located, is one of the countries proposing a senior management liability regime, we are closely monitoring the situation and any implications it might have for the company, its employees, the SN, and its trustees.

 

Weโ€™re also currently exploring the technical constraints, and possibilities, for dealing with those various forms of illegal and abhorrent content, should they be shared on the Safe Network. To do so, we are engaging with several national and international policy networks which have expertise in these fields. While tackling harmful content in decentralised environments is a novel area of research, and has challenges unlike those of traditional centralised systems, it has the potential to offer solutions that not only help uphold human rights, but do so in a way that is driven by global consensus, and that is resistant to subversion.

 

In addition, these solutions would also have the potential to lower the compliance burdens and barriers to entry for application and platform developers, none of whom want their work to be abused for the dissemination of abhorrent illegal content, and most of whom will, themselves, have legal compliance obligations they themselves must meet.

 

We take the view that MaidSafe, and the Safe Network Foundation, could become pioneers in the development of decentralised services which keep these kinds of content off the Network without violating the privacy of our users or breaking the encryption of the system, and weโ€™re quite excited to see what role we can play.

So Biden's agenda has backfired. More evidence rolls in from the rest of the world. Germany has acknowledged that it will burn more coal in the years ahead to get cheap power. But they aren't going to get much of it from the U.S. Rather, they'll get it from China, which has tripled its coal output and doesn't care at all about whether its increased production will negatively affect the environment. China has among the laxest environmental laws in the world. So none of this is stopping climate change.

 

China has been one of the biggest winners from the Biden war on energy. The second winner is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is waltzing to the bank. Russia has made $100 billion selling oil and gas to the U.S. and others at inflated prices.

 

Meanwhile, Biden's war on coal production at home has led to a more than doubling of the world price of coal, and in some cases, the price increases in Europe have risen tenfold because of mining restrictions.

 

I don't oppose coal production, and I believe the environmentalist movement's crusade against coal as part of our energy mix makes no economic sense. We are simply displacing West Virginia and Pennsylvania coal miners with Chinese mining. We need coal in our energy mix, as even the Germans now admit.

 

Then there is the collateral damage of $100 billion of lost annual output in the U.S. because of the anti-energy climate change agenda. Again, none of this makes any sense. Why are we sacrificing our own economic opportunities and handing them to China on a silver platter?

 

Biden, however, could not be bothered to care. At the NATO conference this past week, he chattered about the virtues of windmills and solar panels, as if the U.S. is not experiencing an energy crisis of his own making.

 

What all this means is that if we want to save our economy from raging inflation and at the same time save the planet, we should be producing all of the U.S. energy we can.

Johnson wrote in a statement that Pride is first and foremost about the LGBTQIA+ community โ€“ their collective voices, stories, resilience and hopes.

 

"What we saw in Apex was an attempt to invade our spaces, to silence us, to disperse us, and limit our freedom to be ourselves in our community," she wrote.

 

Johnson and other commenters accused Gilbert of allowing "misinformed" and "non-inclusive" complaints from people who are not part of the LGBTQIA+ community to out weigh the voices of the people who Pride celebrates.

 

"Itโ€™s disappointing that the very vocal minority of non-inclusive folks feel so threatened by something they donโ€™t even understand that they, in turn, threaten their neighbors and fellow Apex residents. Those being so vocal werenโ€™t even going to attend the event anyway!" said one comment on Gilbert's page.

Leaked audio from a what is claimed to be a top-secret meeting of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) has exposed its plans to begin mobilisation efforts to prepare for war with Taiwan.

 

The 57-minute audio clip was allegedly recorded during a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee of Guangdong on May 14.

 

Media network Lude Media published the audio and reports it's the first recording from a "top secret military meeting" in China to be ever released to the public.

 

Lude Media claims the audio was leaked from senior members of the Chinese Communist Party military "who risked their own lives to expose the evil plan of Xi Jinping".

 

The leaked audio uncovers China's military plans for the Taiwan Strait, South China Sea, East China, and First Island Chain.

 

English translations of the discussions reveal the purpose of the PLA meeting was to instruct mobilisation orders to Guangdong and clarify instructions from "peacetime to wartime transition".

 

Those attending the meeting were told all Government levels in the province must change their priority from economic development to "ensuring strategic victory".

 

"We won't hesitate to start a war, crush Taiwan's independence and strong enemies' plots, and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," one speaker is quoted as saying in an English translation.

 

The translated transcript says Guangdong province has been tasked with activating 140,000 military personnel, 953 ships, and 1,653 units of "unmanned equipment".

 

Other resources to be requisitioned include 20 airports, six repair and shipbuilding yards, and 14 emergency transfer centres as well as "grain depots, hospitals, blood stations, oil depots, and gas stations", according to the transcript.

 

President of the Centre for China Analysis and Strategy Jaydeva Ranade has written about the leak and says the timing is interesting.

 

"It is unclear whether the video was deliberately 'leaked' by the Chinese as part of psywar, or it was an unauthorised recording of the meeting by a disgruntled PLA officer.

 

"It will nonetheless certainly be carefully analysed by China's neighbours and competitors," he added.

Yen reaches 24-year-lows against USD

 

The Japanese yen sold at the lowest price against the US dollar on Monday for the first time since 1998, as the United States is battling soaring consumer prices, one of whose repercussions has been a widening monetary policy gap between Japan and the US.

 

The yen has been in freefall for months, especially in light of the Fed aggressively hiking interest rates to try and mitigate the soaring inflation. The current financial situation is expected to maintain its momentum through the coming period as the US grapples with several issues, including the sanctions on Russia that have been causing supply cuts, surging gas prices, and rising food prices.

 

The Bank of Japan said it would adhere to its long-standing monetary easing program, which it hopes would lead to stable growth, a step that goes against what the Fed is doing at home.

 

The contradicting policies have given the USD a lot more ground against the Japanese currency, with the former buying 135.19 yen. This beats the former record of 126 yen on the dollar, which was the Japanese currency's lowest since 2002.

 

This high rate has not been seen since the 1998 Asian currency crisis, and it marks a dramatic drop from the record-high January rates of around 115 yen per USD.

 

As higher oil prices fuel US inflation, "expectations are growing stronger that aggressive US monetary tightening will continue, for the time being, causing US yields to rise further," Takahide Kinouchi, an executive economist at Nomura Research Institute, said.

 

He attributed the rising prices of the USD against the yen to the growing gap between the long-term interest rates in Japan and the United States.

 

US consumer prices in May rose 8.6% and soared over what economists thought was the peak in March.

 

Inflation in Japan has only just hit the central bank's long-term target of 2%, and while the figure represents a seven-year high, the Bank of Japan says current inflationary pressures are temporary, claiming that the monetary policy is a key aspect in producing more long-lasting growth.

 

Prices are still on the same path, rising exponentially over the past month in all sectors, including housing, foodstuffs, airline fares, gas, and new and used vehicles, and, according to data released by the US Department of Labor, the price hikes under Biden are setting new records in multiple categories.

 

As the US economy impacts Japan, BoJ governor Haruhiko Kuroda underlined last week that monetary tightening "is not at all a suitable measure" for his country, which is still economically recovering from the pandemic.

 

In a bid to see the brighter side of things, Kuroda highlighted the benefits of a weaker yen for Japanese exporters, whose overseas profits are also inflated when they are repatriated, especially as they have seen their stock prices rising in recent months.

 

The weaker yen could also mean more tourists for Japan, as tourists are more likely to go to countries with inflated economies; however, the locals would have to bear the brunt of the economic crisis that would hike consumer prices and diminish the purchasing power of Japanese citizens.

 

The yen is highly dependent on how the US Fed acts in its meeting set for September, two months ahead of the midterm congressional elections widely expected to see Biden's democrats suffering seeping losses. Worse-than-projected inflation figures for May have, however, raised concerns about further price hikes in the future.

 

The treasury has already indicated that it had plans to hike interest rates on loans this week and throughout July, but it is looking like the Fed is more likely to increase the aggressiveness of its policies put in place to combat inflation. That would drastically affect the national economy and increase the chances of recession.

 

The Biden administration has tried to absolve itself from responsibility for the widespread inflation hitting the country, with Biden himself trying to cast the blame on Russia for the record food and gas prices affecting US citizens.

 

Energy prices have risen 34.6% over the past year, the fastest since September 2005, food prices have increased 10.1%, and the cost of fuel oil increased by more than two-fold, soaring 106.7% - the largest increase in the history of the consumer price index. A gallon of gas across the US reached $5 nationwide for the first time in history, setting a new record for oil prices.

 

The US government's budget deficit shrank by $66 billion in May to $426 billion as additional pandemic-related aid programs expired, according to the Treasury's monthly budget breakdown released on Friday.

Japan, Russia strike salmon and trout fishing deal despite sanctions

 

Japan and Russia have clinched a deal on Tokyo's fishing quota for salmon and trout spawned in Russian rivers, Japan's Fisheries Agency said Saturday, reaching an agreement on the issue despite Japan's economic sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

 

The two countries agreed on a quota of 2,050 tons within Japan's exclusive economic zone for 2022, the same level as last year, and a payment to Russia of a "cooperation fee" of between 200 million yen ($1.5 million) and 300 million yen, depending on the actual catch. The lower end of the fee which Tokyo pays to Moscow since salmon and trout, according to the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, belong to the country in which they were spawned was reduced by 60 million yen from last year due to a decline in catch in recent years.

 

The two governments will sign the document on Monday. With the agreement, Japanese fishermen are expected to start operating in the EEZ near Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, in early May. On April 11, the two governments started negotiations for Japan's fishing quota for salmon and trout even though Tokyo has been stepping up sanctions against Moscow in an effort, along with the United States and European countries, to pressure Russia to stop the war in Ukraine.

 

In Hokkaido, the ban on net fishing for salmon and trout is normally lifted on April 10. But this year fishing has not been allowed as the ban remained in effect pending the outcome of negotiations. "This is part of Japan's cooperation in resource management undertaken by Russia," an agency official said. "I don't see any problem with it." In last year's talks, the two countries agreed on a payment to Russia of between 260 million yen and 300 million yen depending on the catch, with the actual fee being 260 million yen.

 

Japan's quota within Russia's EEZ, which is usually discussed along with that of within Japan's EEZ, remains undecided. The negotiations are part of many similar frameworks surrounding fishing between Tokyo and Moscow. The two countries discuss their quotas for fish resources such as saury and squid within each other's EEZs throughout the year.

According to reports by Libyan media, protestors stormed Libya's parliament building in the eastern city of Tobruk on Friday.

 

The protestors were demonstrating against worsening living conditions and the political deadlock that has plagued the country for months.

 

Some television channels said protestors managed to enter the building and commit acts of vandalism, with others saying part of the building was burned.

 

The building was empty, as Friday falls on the weekend in Libya.

 

Libya's parliament has been based in Tobruk, hundreds of kilometers east of the capital, since the country's east-west schism began in 2014.

 

Images revealed that protestors were able to smash part of a gate leading to parliament with a bulldozer, with others setting the cars of some officials on fire. Others still were throwing official documents into the air, while committing acts of vandalism.

 

Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Geneva, quoting a UN source, reported on Wednesday that the Libyan parties have reached an understanding with a document expected to be signed.

 

The source said that "the document to be signed is very important, and will open the door to a serious path towards the elections," adding that "the document will be presented to the Libyan authorities and parties, to be approved before moving to the implementation phase."

But based on an examination of tax returns filed by Koumโ€™s foundation before the war, the publicity-shy WhatsApp founder, who arrived in California as a teenager, is more entwined than meets the eye with the events rocking the country he left behind as a 16-year-old. His donations, only a sliver of which have been previously reported, include tens of millions of dollars to Jewish organizations now involved in relief efforts in Eastern Europe.

 

For example, from 2019 to 2020, the latest year for which there is a tax return, the Koum Family Foundation donated about $17 million to the European Jewish Association, an organization headquartered in Brussels that launched a campaign in March to provide housing, food and clothing to refugees from the war. Nearly all of the groupโ€™s 2019 budget came from Koum.

 

With $10.6 million in gifts over that same period, Koumโ€™s foundation is also one of the most significant donors to another group involved in relief efforts: the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS. The group, whose name refers to the Commonwealth of Independent States, an association of former Soviet territories, announced the establishment of an ambulance fleet to evacuate patients throughout Ukraine.

It is unknown whether Koum continued to make donations in 2021 and afterward because his foundation and all of the past grantees contacted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency have either ignored requests for comment or declined to speak on the record. JTA contacted more than a dozen of the nonprofits, several of which said they were prohibited from publicly acknowledging Koumโ€™s giving as a condition of their gift.

 

Due to the secrecy marking his charitable giving, as well as his personal life, Koumโ€™s profile as a philanthropist over the past several years has gone almost unnoticed. However, tax returns reveal that Koum, with a fortune estimated between $9.8 billion and $13.7 billion, has quietly become one of the largest donors to Jewish causes in the world.

UK MoD threatens to cut off fuel suppliers over Russian oil usage

 

The British Ministry of Defense has threatened to abandon fuel suppliers that use Russian oil, a ministry spokesperson said on Sunday.

 

"If oil products supplied to the Ministry of Defense are found to come from Russian suppliers, we will take immediate action to switch to alternate suppliers," The Telegraph quoted the spokesperson as saying.

 

London's defense ministry reportedly acquires its fuel from various suppliers, including jet fuel from the Greek Motor Oil Hellas, which had signed in November 2017 a five-year deal with the Russian Rosneft company.

 

Tanker tracking data shows that shipments of oil had been sent from Russia to Motor Oil's terminal in Corinth, Greece, since the start of the Ukraine war and the oil embargo on Moscow.

 

The spokesperson said that the ministry was assured that the fuel obtained from Motor Oil Hellas was not sourced from Russia, however.

 

The United Kingdom announced in March that it would stop importing oil from Russia by the end of 2022 in response to Moscow's actions in Ukraine. Russian imports accounted for 8% of the country's total oil demand and 18% of diesel before the war kicked off.

 

Western countries have imposed batches of sanctions on Russian oil, gas, currency, and more. The United States has banned Russian fuel imports, while the United Kingdom and the European Union have agreed to phase out their use.

 

Conversely, Asian countries such as China and India have increased their imports of Russian fuel, lured by record discounts of more than 30% on Brent crude.

 

Russia has been able to absorb the discounts caused by the rise in the price of Brent crude. Urals, Russia's main export blend, averaged $78.81 per barrel in May, up nearly 12% from the previous month.

 

The average price of diesel has reached a new high of 190.92 pence per liter, while gasoline has risen to 185.04 pence.

 

According to RAC calculations, a 55-liter family car with diesel now costs ยฃ105.01 ($128.14), while a full tank of gasoline costs ยฃ101.77 ($124.19).

 

"The speed and scale of the increase is staggeringโ€ฆ Incredibly, the government is now raking around ยฃ46 ($56) in tax from every full tank," RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said in a statement cited by Bloomberg.

 

UK motoring groups have urged the government to take more decisive action to assist drivers in dealing with the price increase. The government already reduced fuel duty by 5 pence per liter in March, but motorists deemed the reduction insufficient. According to the RAC, a further reduction in fuel tax is long overdue but would still be "very welcome."

GI-TOC: Network that Trafficked Over 30 Tonnes of Ivory Yet to Face Justice

 

Despite charges of illicitly trafficking over 30 tonnes of ivory for over a decade now, the alleged members of one of Africaโ€™s largest wildlife-trafficking networks have by and large managed to evade conviction, according to a risk bulletin compiled by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC).

 

Although several alleged members of one of the worldโ€™s most active wildlife-trafficking syndicates have been circulated through various African courts since 2010, few cases have reached their conclusion and fewer still have resulted in a conviction.

 

Liberian national Moazu Kromahโ€”also know as โ€˜Kampala Manโ€™โ€”is believed to stand at the head of this criminal organization, and although his network is linked to at least 15 major ivory-trafficking cases responsible for the theft and transport of over 30 tonnes of ivory, only one has ended in a guilty sentence with the two accused receiving only two-year sentences.

 

Despite Kromahโ€™s arrest in 2017, his extradition to the U.S. two years later, and finally his guilty plea for three wildlife-trafficking offenses in March this year, the speed at which his case was processed has raised troubling concerns as to when the network as a whole will face justice for their actions.

 

The Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Natural Resource Conservation Network (NRCN), who for several years investigated Kromahโ€™s syndicate, described the man as โ€œthe centre of a vast ring of organized criminalsโ€ฆconnected to at least four other major criminal syndicatesโ€ฆsupplying the biggest wildlife criminal syndicates worldwide.โ€

 

At the time of Kampala Manโ€™s arrest in 2017, the UWA and NRCN also recovered over 430 pieces of ivory weighing in at over 1.3 tonnes.

 

However, his criminal proceedings ran into several speed bumps following his incarceration. Kromah reportedly bribed several officials to bury his case and Interpol documents were later uncovered in his home, further suggesting that he had corrupted Ugandaโ€™s courts, according to GI-TOC.

 

Though he remained free as of 2018, by this time American authorities had entered the fray. Kromah was persuaded to travel to the U.S. to sell rhino horns where he was arrested for wildlife trafficking once and for all in June 2019.

 

Authorities soon uncovered the scope of Kampala Manโ€™s criminal syndicate, which shipped ivory and other animal parts from several African nations including Kenya, Mozambique, and Uganda.

Israeli occupation forces and representatives of the Israeli Security Ministry took part in military exercises in Morocco for the first time, according to the Ministry's press department.

 

The African Lion yearly military drill took place throughout last month. The drill was attended by military troops from ten different countries.

 

Officials from the Israeli Security Ministry and occupation forces "participated in an international military exercise in Morocco for the first time this past week: โ€˜African Lion 2022โ€™, led by AFRICOM [US Africa Command] and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces," the Israeli Security Ministry said on social media on Saturday.

 

According to the Ministry, the African Lion drill was attended by the head of the Policy and Political-Military Bureau's Middle East and North Africa division, who also serves as the security attache to Morocco, as well as two Israeli occupation officers.

 

The Security Ministry stated that "Israel's" involvement in the drill in Morocco was intended to boost bilateral security relations.

 

Mutual desires

 

In March, an Israeli occupation military delegation met with Moroccan officers in Rabat in the first visit of its kind since the 2020 normalization deal, and the two signed a security cooperation agreement.

 

"A meeting took place at General Staff headquarters to develop cooperation" between Morocco and "Israel", a Moroccan Royal Armed Forces source told AFP.

 

During the visit, the two signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation and setting up a joint commission, the Israeli occupation army said in a statement, without adding details.

 

The statement mentioned that "the heads of the occupation army's strategic planning and cooperation directorate and its international cooperation division were present, along with its intelligence section's operations division chief."

 

Normalization with "Israel"

 

Morocco and "Israel" formally signed a normalization deal a year ago. Following that, relations grew in all aspects, from the exchange of ambassadors to tourism and flights, exports and business contacts, high-level ministerial visits, and security cooperation.

 

However, 36 Moroccan cities witnessed protests against normalization with โ€œIsraelโ€ and in solidarity with Palestine.

 

These protests came in response to the call of the Moroccan National Front to Support Palestine and Oppose Normalizationโ€™s to reject normalization.

 

Protesters were suppressed by the security forces, which resulted in injuries within the ranks of protesters, among which are elders.

Tunisian police arrested former Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali on Thursday as per his lawyer.

 

The lawyer was unable to explain why Jebali had been detained.

Lauren Frazier, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Southeast in Atlanta, said calls have increased about concerned women wanting to know how many pills they can stockpile.

 

Other abortion and healthcare providers are warning women not to completely clear the shelves to allow others who need pills now to obtain them.
