Flash memory is really cheap. So cheap, in fact, that it’s too good to be true. In reality, all flash memory is riddled with defects — without exception. The illusion of a contiguous, reliable storage media is crafted through sophisticated error correction and bad block management functions. This is the result of a constant arms race between the engineers and mother nature; with every fabrication process shrink, memory becomes cheaper but more unreliable. Likewise, with every generation, the engineers come up with more sophisticated and complicated algorithms to compensate for mother nature’s propensity for entropy and randomness at the atomic scale.

These algorithms are too complicated and too device-specific to be run at the application or OS level, and so it turns out that every flash memory disk ships with a reasonably powerful microcontroller to run a custom set of disk abstraction algorithms. Even the diminutive microSD card contains not one, but at least two chips — a controller, and at least one flash chip (high density cards will stack multiple flash die). You can see some die shots of the inside of microSD cards at a microSD teardown I did a couple years ago.

It’s as of yet unclear how many other manufacturers leave their firmware updating sequences unsecured. Appotech is a relatively minor player in the SD controller world; there’s a handful of companies that you’ve probably never heard of that produce SD controllers, including Alcor Micro, Skymedi, Phison, SMI, and of course Sandisk and Samsung. Each of them would have different mechanisms and methods for loading and updating their firmwares. However, it’s been previously noted that at least one Samsung eMMC implementation using an ARM instruction set had a bug which required a firmware updater to be pushed to Android devices, indicating yet another potentially promising venue for further discovery.

LONDON (AP) – Prince Charles’ office has denied there was any wrongdoing in the heir to the British throne accepting bags full of cash as charity donations from a Qatari politician.

The Sunday Times said the prince was given a total of 3 million euros ($3.2 million) by Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, the former prime minister of Qatar. It said the money was handed over to Charles at private meetings between 2011 and 2015 – on one occasion in a suitcase, and on another in shopping bags from London’s Fortnum & Mason department store.

The newspaper said the money was deposited into the accounts of the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund. It did not allege that anything illegal was done.

Charles’ office, Clarence House, said in a statement that the donations “were passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities who carried out the appropriate governance and have assured us that all the correct processes were followed.”

The prince’s charitable fund told the newspaper it had verified “that the donor was a legitimate and verified counterparty … and our auditors signed off on the donation after a specific enquiry during the audit. There was no failure of governance.”

As Qatar’s prime minister between 2007 and 2013, Hamad oversaw the oil-rich state’s sovereign wealth fund, which has major property investments around the world, including London’s Shard skyscraper, Heathrow Airport and Harrods department store.

London police are currently investigating a separate allegation that people associated with another of the prince’s charities, the Prince’s Foundation, offered to help a Saudi billionaire secure honors and citizenship in return for donations. Clarence House has said Charles had no knowledge of any such offer.

Qatar’s government communications office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It seemed like an ordinary club, with a chairman, a treasurer and a board of long-serving and respected members.

Everyone had a nickname and there were the usual petty rows: grumbles that too many members were being allowed in without going through the official channels or being approved by the hierarchy.

But it was the sinister entry fee that exposed the fact that this was no ordinary club: each new member had to supply 10,000 pornographic images of children.

This was theWonderland Club, an international online paedophile ring which ran for four years before finally being smashed by the biggest international police operation ever undertaken.

Tomorrow, seven British members of the ring will be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court for 'conspiring with others to distribute indecent images of children'. The legal jargon masks a terrible reality: Wonderland was an international network of paedophiles involving the rape of boys and girls live on camera and the traffic in images of the torture of children as young as two months.

The international investigation to crack the ring was the biggest in policing history, taking in 13 countries and 180 men. Led by British officers, on 2 September 1998 police forces simultaneously kicked in the doors of 107 homes and made 104 arrests.

The suspects included the usual collection of outsiders: unemployed loners in UK bedsits, a father and son in a US trailer-park. But they also numbered a computer consultant in an Italian penthouse apartment, a German professor and a Canadian medical student who had trained on a children's hospital ward. The more senior members of the club earned their status by providing photographs and videos of themselves performing sex acts with children. In a perverse paedophile version of Hollywood, certain children became 'stars'.

One prolific abuser, Gary Salt, invited other members to visit his Stockport home to pose with children in front of the webcam as if they were meeting a screen hero. Thesheer weight of the physical evidence illustrates the enormity of Operation Cathedral - 750,000 individual images of children and 1,800 computerised videos depicted children being sexually abused.

The images were so appalling that National Crime Squad officers who had to sift through the mountain of material had compulsory therapy sessions to help them deal with what they saw.

'These really are quite horrific images,' said Alex Wood, deputy chief inspector of the NCS. 'These are kids being subjected to the most serious, serious, abuse.'

The ring began to unravel after the arrest of Ronald Riva in Greenfield, California. Officers discovered that Riva had raped his daughter's 10-year-old friend in front of a camera which relayed the live image onto the internet. The child, who had been invited to a slumber party by Riva's daughter, is one of only two of the 1,236 Wonderland victims to have been traced. The other, a Portugese boy, has disappeared and police fear he may have been murdered.

Among six men who had typed messages of encouragement to Riva was Ian Baldock, a 31-year-old computer consultant from St Leonards, East Sussex. The FBI informed the UK police, who soon realised the scale of the enterprise they had stumbled on. Operation Cathedral was born.

'At first there was not enough police knowledge or power,' said Wood.

'We had to bring in computer experts who worked with us for 14 months. Once we had traced actual computers we then had to establish who was using that computer at a particular time and with many of them in libraries and universities it wasn't easy.'

Round-the-clock surveillance on suspects had to be introduced to ensure none had access to children while the investigation was ongoing. At one point, the operation almost collapsed when one British man, Gavin Seagers, was discovered working with Sea Cadets. The police knew that if they arrested him they risked tipping off the whole network. Tracing the victims of the Wonderland Club is now a priority. New technology is being tested out by Interpol based in Lyons, France, to enable photographs sent in by social services and families to be 'matched' by computer against the victims' photographs. Already 900 children have had their photographs 'sanitised' and stored and police forces across the world will be able to access them.

The British Government introduced legislation last month to increase maximum sentences for the possession of child porn from six months to five years. Those caught producing or distributing the images will now receive sentences of 10 years rather than the present maximum of three. But the new sentences will not apply to the Wonderland Club.

Next month the internet Crime Forum at the Home Office will publish a report on chatrooms where child abusers discuss their fantasies. Police have become concerned that these forums are being used to 'groom' children and lure them to meetings with paedophiles. The report is likely to make depressing reading. A Home Office spokesman told The Observer : 'We have a very co-operative relationship with internet service providers, but it is technologically impossible for them to stop this stuff.'

In April, a new cyber-crime unit will start work involving 80 officers from the police, Customs and the National Criminal Intelligence Service.

According to the National Association of Probation Officers most internet offenders do not see themselves as criminals and few receive treatment. Spokesman Harry Fletcher said: 'We are only beginning to understand the scale of this crime. It is a major problem that their offending behaviour is not being challenged.'

Paedophiles' vast 'lending library'

A vast "lending library" of images of child abuse was built up by the world's biggest internet paedophile gang, a court has heard.

Seven British men, were members of the so-called Wonderland Club, have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute indecent images of children.

They face a maximum of three years' imprisonment at Kingston Crown Court.

The paedophile ring was smashed by Operation Cathedral, the largest ever international operation to be co-ordinated by the National Crime Squad in London.

All of the children involved were under the age of 16 and in one case the child was only three months

Ian Baldock, 31, from St Leonards, East Sussex.

Antoni Skinner, 36, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Gavin Seagers, 29, a Sea Cadets youth leader, from Dartford, Kent.

Ahmet Ali, 30, from Tulse Hill, south London.

Frederick Stephens, 46, from Hayes, west London.

Andrew Barlow, 25, from Bletchley, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

David Hines, 30, of Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

A total of 107 people were arrested in the UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and the United States.

An eighth man, Gary Salt, is serving 12 years after being convicted in Manchester of rape.

A further member of the group, Steven Ellis, 40, from Norwich, committed suicide after his arrest.

'Secret and secure underworld'

David Perry QC, prosecuting, said the defendants had a "secret and secure" underworld.

He told the court: "Each of them was involved in the distribution of indecent material on the internet throughout the world.

"The indecent material depicted children involved in sexual acts with adults and also with other children.

"All of the children involved were under the age of 16 and in one case the child was only three months - in many cases the children were aged two or three years and the vast majority were under 10.

"Each had a huge quantity of indecent images stored in the hard drives of their computers and on compact discs."

"It was a vast international lending library whose members swapped a vast quantity of paedophile images," Mr Perry said.

"Each had a huge quantity of indecent images stored in the hard drives of their computers and on compact discs," the court heard.

The defendants' homes were raided on 2 September 1998.

The court heard that an enormous amount of pictures were uncovered.

When Baldock - whose nickname was Sheepy - was arrested in October 1997, detectives found 45,000 images of children, mostly aged about four or five, Mr Perry said.

The jury heard that Hines - known as Mutt's Nuts - admitted having a cache of about 12,000 paedophile images.

Seagers - whose nickname was Hopeful - had at least 46,000 encrypted images on his computer, the court heard.

Child

Tracking the children in the images is like hunting a needle in a haystack

Skinner - known as Uhura, or Satan - used a "highly sophisticated" method of encryption and officers could only detect 390 images, Mr Perry said.

Ali - whose nickname was Caesar - had stored 13,000 images and Barlow, who was known as Mix, had at least 24,000, the court heard.

Stephens, who used the nicknames Guess Who? or Me Again, had 8,920 images and 643 video images, Mr Perry told the court.

Mr Perry said an album of the children involved had been created and posted on Interpol's website to help police forces from around the world could trace the victims of abuse.

More than 1,263 children were featured in the pictures - but only 17 had been identified - six in the UK, seven in the United States, one in Portugal, one in Chile, and one in Argentina.

The case was adjourned on Monday evening and the seven were remanded in custody pending sentencing on Tuesday.
