PHOENIX — An IRS special agent was killed during an accidental shooting by another agent during a training exercise Thursday, according to ABC15 sources.

In a statement released Thursday evening, FBI officials confirmed they are investigating the death of an IRS special agent but did not share further details about what led up to the incident.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) says it is investigating a "shooting incident" at the Federal Correctional Institutional (FCI) Phoenix firing range Thursday afternoon but could not confirm additional details.

The FBOP says the gun range was being utilized by multiple federal agencies at the time.

The IRS has confirmed that an agent was taken to the hospital after the incident and did not survive.

ABC15 sources say the special agent was shot by a fellow agent.

The IRS released the following information Thursday evening:

"We are aware of an incident involving one of our special agents that occurred during a routine training exercise at the Federal Correctional Institution, Phoenix firing range. The agent was immediately taken to HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center to be treated for the injury. The agent passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. The incident is under investigation.

Our concern today is for the agent and their family."

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks Statement on Blended-Wing-Body Aircraft Prototype

Attributable to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks:

Yesterday the Department of Defense awarded a contract to JetZero for the next phase of a blended-wing body aircraft prototype.

The contract is the result of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Air Force and the Defense Innovation Unit, with assistance from DoD's Office of Strategic Capital, and represents an important milestone in the development of a potentially transformational technology.

For the military, projected BWB fuel savings of 30% over traditional aircraft would help mitigate logistics risks and enable critical capabilities such as increased range, loiter time, and offload capabilities. A successful BWB would be good news for the Department, our warfighters, the U.S. aerospace industry and the American taxpayer.

We look forward to seeing the prototype as early as 2027.

Today, DOD released the Biodefense Posture Review, outlining reforms aimed to posture the department to fight and win in the face of future biothreats.

"The Biodefense Posture Review was a whole of DOD effort," said Sasha Baker, Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. "The biodefense enterprise came together during COVID-19 response efforts, and building on that collaboration, developed guidance to achieve National Defense Strategy priorities and address biological threats, especially those with strategic consequences for the U.S. military."
