$13 Billion Commonwealth LNG Project Gets Green Light in Louisiana

Caturus announced Friday it has reached final investment decision (FID) on the long-delayed 9.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) Commonwealth LNG export terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, backed by $9.75 billion in project financing and more than $21 billion in total capital commitments.

The roughly $13 billion project marks one of the largest U.S. LNG export developments approved this year and further cements America’s position as the world’s dominant LNG supplier.

The Commonwealth facility is expected to begin operations in 2030 and will have the capability to load LNG carriers up to 216,000 cubic meters. Long-term offtake agreements have already been secured with a roster of major global counterparties including EQT, Glencore, Mercuria, PETRONAS and Aramco Trading.

“This landmark occasion … is the culmination of years of strategic planning, strong partnerships and commitment to delivering a fully integrated ‘wellhead-to-water’ project,” said Ben Dell, managing partner of Kimmeridge and chairman of Commonwealth LNG.

The project is central to Caturus’ strategy of building a vertically integrated gas platform spanning upstream production through LNG exports. The company said it now produces more than 1 billion cubic feet equivalent per day following its recent acquisition of Galvan Ranch assets from SM Energy.

The financing group includes existing investors Mubadala Energy and CPP Investments, alongside funding from BlackRock, Ares Management and EOC Partners.

Engineering and construction work will be led by Technip Energies, which has already begun procurement of major long-lead equipment. The terminal will use Baker Hughes LM9000 gas turbines, Honeywell cryogenic heat exchangers, and Solar Turbines power generation systems.

The FID comes amid a broader acceleration in U.S. LNG expansion. The United States exported roughly 111–112 million metric tons of LNG in 2025, making it the first country ever to exceed 100 million metric tons annually and widening its lead over Qatar and Australia in global LNG exports.

The latest investment also reflects continued confidence in long-term LNG demand despite growing geopolitical volatility surrounding global energy shipping routes, including ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the prolonged rerouting of cargoes around the Suez Canal.

“This pragmatic approach allows the company to have direct oversight and accountability for exploration and production of natural gas, as well as liquefaction capabilities to market LNG for export,” the company said.

Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2024 but an appeals court ruled last month that she needs to be resentenced after part of the sentence punished Peters for her protected speech regarding fraud claims in the 2020 election.

Polis denied that the commutation was an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, instead highlighting that Peters was a first-time nonviolent offender who was given an "unusually harsh sentence."

“She committed a crime; she deserves to be a convicted felon,” Polis told the New York Times, claiming her views on the 2020 election shouldn't have impacted her sentence. “I think it’s an important message we send out, that supports free speech in our country."

The 70-year-old Peters was found guilty of three counts of attempting to influence a public servant and one count each of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty, and failure to comply with the requirements of the secretary of state.

Polis also commuted the sentences of eight other state residents and pardoned 35 people.

Peters will be released on parole effective June 1.

The Danish government had used national security provisions to bypass potential legal objections surrounding the construction of a facility in Vojens, southern Jutland,where fuel for Fire Point’s missile systems was expected to be manufactured. However, the project announced last September was quietly halted earlier this month, Fire Point chief designer and co-owner Denis Shtilerman told the outlet on Thursday.

Originally operating as a film scouting agency owned by Zelensky insiders,Fire Point has been exposed in leaked transcripts of conversations between Zelensky's inner circle as a vehicle for syphoning off lucrative arms contracts.

Thefirm emerged as a “miracle”player in Ukraine’s defense sector having been internationally touted by Zelenskyon his foreign visits and reportedly securing contracts worth up to $1 billion.

Surveillance recordings published by Ukrainian mediasince April indicated that businessman Timur Mindich –who is wanted in Ukraine over an alleged $100 million corruption scheme in the energy sector– effectively controlled Fire Point during 2025. The recordingsalso suggested he enjoyed preferential treatment from then-Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who now serves as secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.

Shtilerman dismissed the allegations as “rumors,”while lamenting that the suspicions had delayed the company’s plans. He claimed that Fire Point’s products could contribute to the creation of a “pan-European air-defense shield” and claimed that Gulf states, Germany, and other countries had shown strong interest in the firm’s technology.

Mindich scandal widens

The recordings were originally gathered by Western-backed anti-corruption agenciesas part of their investigation into Mindich, a longtime business associate of Zelensky dating back to the Ukrainian leader’s entertainment career. Ukrainian media have nicknamed Mindich “Zelensky’s wallet.”

This week, the same agencies chargedformer Zelensky chief of staff Andrey Yermak with money laundering offenses. According to the indictment, Yermak helped channel illicit funds into a luxury real estate development, which also counts Mindich among its owners,as well as former Unity Minister Aleksey Chernyshov and a fourth partner who media reports claimed is Zelensky himself.

Political uncertainty in Denmark

While Danish media acknowledged that the so-called ‘Mindich tapes’ had intensified scrutiny of Fire Point’s operations inDenmark, authorities have up to now stopped short of confirming that the fuel plant project was in jeopardy.

In late 2025, Deputy Foreign Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, who also serves as defense minister under pro-Ukrainian Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, stated that Copenhagen “does everything it can to follow the money we give” Ukraine.

Denmark is currently facing difficult coalition negotiations after Frederiksen’s Social Democrats recorded their worst election result since 1903 in March voting. Last week, King Frederik asked Poulsen to attempt to form a new government after Frederiksen failed to secure enough parliamentary support for a third term.

US President Donald Trump’sincreasingly “confrontational and unpredictable” policies have left Europe “truly alone together” andunable to rely on Washington as its main security guarantor, former Italian prime minister and ex-ECB chief Mario Draghi has warned.

Draghi made the remarks in Aachen, Germany, on Thursday while receiving the Charlemagne Prize for his “historic services” to European integration and competitiveness.

Using his speech to outline how Europe can survive the “new realities,” Draghi warned the bloc could no longer depend on the US.

“The world that once helped Europe generate prosperity no longer exists. It has become harder, more fragmented and more mercantilist… The central external fact of our time:our relationship with the US has changed,” Draghi said.

He argued that Washington is increasingly making unilateral decisions with major consequences for Europe,citing Trump’s tariffs introduced last year, which. resulted in a trade deal widely viewed in Europe as humiliating, as well as the.US-Israeli war on Iran launched without consultation with European allies.

Draghi said the conflict, which effectively blocked the Strait ofHormuz – the route for roughly 20% of global oil and LNGsupplies –“brought inflation back into our economies and anxiety back into our households.”(They don’t mention Iran blocking the port, it’s Trumps fault.I can’t believe they are saying any of this, the whole point is Europe refused to assist America for the first time we could have used it in Iran. This article sounds like Europe lost their Free Nanny that helped them to walk and pay their bills. Their economy has been shit for years, and no the U.S. is not going to bail you out of childish habits.==)

At the same time, Draghi described the shift in US policy as a “necessary wake-up call.”

“In a world of evolving partnerships, every strategic dependency must now be re-examined. (The dependency is coming from Europe, we really asked anything from them).For the first time in living memory, we are truly alone together(how many fucking countries have, you are not alone),” he said, warning that “the partner on whom we still depend has become more confrontational and unpredictable.”

Draghi argued Europe mustfundamentally rethink its economic and political model, calling for a more assertive bloc and warning reliance on Washington for defensecould spill into trade, technology, and energy. He urgeddeeper integration, a stronger internal market, and a ‘Made in Europe’ strategy to rebuild the bloc’s industrial, technological, and defense base. To hasten this,he proposed “pragmatic federalism,” allowing willing countries to move faster on reforms through joint projects.

Relations between the US and EU have been strained since Trump returned to office in 2024,with recurring disputes over trade, defense, digital regulation, and the Ukraine conflict. Trump repeatedly threatened the bloc with tariffs andaccused European NATO members of failing to meet obligations, pressing them to raise military spending. His 2026 National Security Strategyfurther criticized the EU as strategically unreliable and warned of “civilizational erasure.”

Trump’s rhetoric over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory he sought to annex, also fueled tensions last year, although he later softened his stance.

The US-Israeli war on Iran deepened the rift after Washington announced the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germanyand threatened further troop cuts in countries such as Spain and Italy following criticism of the conflict.
