Is our ability to internalize counterfactuals a problem for society?

Well, that’s interesting. One of the most important things society needs is agreement on how we determine truth. It does seem that there are people who disagree not on the facts — we don’t care about that — but on how you ascertain whether something is true. But I’m also a little skeptical about how much that gets underlined for entertainment.

What do you mean?

We know a guy walked into that pizza place with a gun because of Pizzagate. We know he believed in that. We also know that hundreds of thousands of people knew about the Pizzagate conspiracy idea. But those are two very different facts. We don’t know how many of the people who knew about Pizzagate shrugged it off. All we know is that one guy took it seriously. Probably more than one guy did, but it’s very hard to get real data on that. It’s like how I have all these friends who have a clear vision of who a Trump supporter is — with no evidence that the person they’re imagining actually exists.

So what you’re saying is that you’re skeptical that there’s been a shift, which is often attributed to Trumpism, in those people’s willingness to believe things at odds with facts?

But when you say “those people” you’ve made a huge error because there are no “those people.” They don’t exist. You hear stuff like, “Trump supporters are homophobic. Trump supporters are misogynist.” This is a mistake that was made by Democrats. They would accuse Trump supporters of being things that Trump supporters knew they weren’t. There are Trump supporters that have best friends who have gay sex. They do. You can’t put a “they”-type thing on that. For 50 million years our biggest problems were too few calories, too little information. For about 50 years our biggest problem has been too many calories, too much information. We have to adjust, and I believe we will really fast. I also believe it will be wicked ugly while we’re adjusting.

Chief District Judge Sarah C. Backus formally announced Tuesday (Jan. 31) she is seeking the Democratic nomination to retain her position as Eighth Judicial District Judge, Division II in the June 5 primary.

Gov. Susana Martinez appointed Backus following a recommendation from a bi-partisan Judicial Selection Commission. After her appointment, she was elected chief judge in the Eighth Judicial District Court by her fellow judges.

Backus has been a resident of Taos and has practiced law here continuously since 1994. She was formerly a senior trial prosecutor with the Eighth Judicial District Attorney and town attorney, assistant town attorney and planning director for the town of Taos.

She served as general counsel and director of El Valle de los Ranchos Water and Sanitation District.

In addition, Backus has been in private practice where she handled domestic relations, civil, land use and real estate matters.

Prior to moving to Taos, Backus served as a deputy attorney general with the state of California and as deputy public defender with the city and county of San Francisco.

Backus is a lifelong Democrat. The Democratic Party of New Mexico appointed her in 2008 and 2010 to head the election protection efforts for the Democratic Party.

In addition, she has served on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity and as President of the Governing Body of Taos Charter School. She has also been president of the Taos County Bar Association.

Backus is the mother of a 14-year old son who has been raised in Taos and attends public schools here.

DNC Releases Statement on Keith Ellison Domestic Abuse Allegations After 72 Hours of Silence

Fourcher says the key to Oasis’ success has been integration with newsroom computer systems (NCRS) like Avid’s iNews and AP’s ENPS through the MOS (Media Object Server) protocol. That makes accessing the video in Oasis seamless to news directors and reporters using the NCRS, and makes it easy to grab a relevant story from another market to add variety to the nightly newscast.

“When you think about asset management, it comes down to how you tie the workflow together, and unless it’s tied into the workflow, it doesn’t get used,” says Fourcher. “At TV stations, our MAM is seamless into what they do every day.”

An early focus for Bitcentral was providing easy access to the MAM from the field, which Fourcher says was a product differentiator. Now he is looking at “extending an asset management system upstream into the connected camera workflow, and downstream into all connected platforms.”

Bitcentral is working with camera manufacturers that have built-in encoding capabilities in their camcorders to make sure they can transmit files directly into Oasis. It has also created an add-on product to Oasis called Multipath that handles digital distribution to Websites, mobile apps and social media platforms.

Porn Star Stevan Karanovic Busted For Flashing Children

A former Serbian porn star who moved to Malta three years ago has been charged with the horrible crime of exposing his penis to two children at a local supermarket. The exhibitionist later pleaded guilty to defilement.

The former porn star has been identified as 57-year-old Stevan Karanovic. He is accused of having exposed himself to two innocent girls who were just standing at the cheese counter of an Qormi supermarket last Saturday.

Prosecuting Inspector Roxanne Tabone said the suspect admitted to police that he “had felt the need to show himself.” When asked why he exposed himself to children, but not to the parents, Karanovic answered that he “cannot explain it.” When pressed, he later admitted that it’s the children’s vulnerability and defenselessness that lured him to do it to them. The pervert admitted: “Children don’t threaten or shout, they don’t do any harm. They just laugh or look in disgust.”

In order to complete the investigation, the police went to search Karanoviç’s apartment in Rabat where they found the extent of his depravation as they saw a considerable store of pornographic material of all kinds, including images and videos involving children, even newborns.

Inspector Tabone also shared how Karanovic had first told police that he had ventured into child porn “just out of curiosity,” later admitting that he was a collector of porn as well as being a porn star in his home country.

The pedophile was arraigned on Monday over charges of defilement, the production, acquisition or circulation of indecent material involving minors as well as for being naked or indecently dressed in public.

A request for bail was turned down after another prosecutor, Inspector Shaun Ferriggi explained that the pedophile had no fixed ties in Malta and had changed address several times. His case will be adjourned in September.
