Trump refuses to compromise on wall

President Donald Trump stood firm Sunday on his demand for billions of dollars to fund a border wall with Mexico, which has forced a shutdown of the US government now entering its third week.

"We have to build the wall," Trump told reporters as he left the White House for the Camp David presidential retreat, while conceding that the barrier could be "steel instead of concrete."

"It's about safety, it's about security for our country," he said. "We have no choice."

An impasse with lawmakers over funding for the border wall has partially shut down the federal government since December 22.

Talks aimed at ending the shutdown were to continue Sunday, after discussions a day earlier between Vice President Mike Pence and representatives of Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, the top two Democrats in Congress, made little headway.

Democrats, who now control the House of Representatives, seem in no mood to make concessions to the president on a border wall Pelosi has described as an "immorality."

"This shutdown could end tomorrow and it could also go on for a long time," Trump said. "It really depends on the Democrats."

Both Democrats and Republicans have attempted to pin the blame for the shutdown on the other side.

Building a wall along the 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) US-Mexico border was a central plank in the 2016 election campaign of Trump, who has sought to equate immigrants with crime, drugs and gangs.

The president has described the situation at the border as a "national emergency," and has said he is looking into ways to get a wall built without congressional approval.

Two Americans – Including One Texan – Captured in Syria Fighting for ISIS

Warren Christopher Clark sent a resume to ISIS volunteering to teach English in the caliphate capital.

The two Americans along with three other terrorists were planning a missile attack on innocent civilians when they were captured.

Clark was named in a George Washington University study as one of at least 64 Americans from 16 states who had traveled to Iraq and Syria since 2011 to join jihadist groups.

FOX News reported:

Two Americans were among five ISIS fighters recently captured in eastern Syria, according to a spokesman for the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces.

The Americans were identified as Warren Christopher Clark (aka Abu Mohammad al-Ameriki) of Houston, and Zaid Abed al-Hamid (aka Abu Zaid al-Ameriki), originally from the U.S., but no specific location was reported.

Clark was identified in an NBC News report last February as an American who had sent his resume to ISIS, in hopes of joining the terror group.

“We are aware of open source reports of reportedly American citizens currently in custody who were believed to be fighting for ISIS,” Navy Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, told Fox News in a statement. “However, we are unable to confirm this information at this time. The incident is under investigation.”

Trump says acting Cabinet members give him 'more flexibility'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was in no hurry to find permanent replacements for one-quarter of his Cabinet currently serving in an acting capacity because it gives him “more flexibility.”

“I am in no hurry,” Trump told reporters as he departed for Camp David, the U.S. presidential retreat, for meetings on the partial government shutdown. About one-fourth of the U.S. government has been shuttered for more than two weeks and about 800,000 government workers have been either furloughed or working without pay.

“I like acting. It gives me more flexibility. Do you understand that? I like acting. So we have a few that are acting. We have a great, great Cabinet,” Trump said. He did not elaborate on why they give him more flexibility.

There are 24 Cabinet-level positions and six are currently filled by individuals who are serving in an acting capacity after the departure of members confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Other than the White House chief of staff and the vice president, Cabinet-level officials require confirmation by the Senate. Federal law allows presidents to temporarily fill vacancies by appointing acting department heads who are already employees there.

Trump said last month he was in no hurry to name a new defense secretary after Jim Mattis quit over policy differences, and he has praised the acting secretary, Patrick Shanahan.

Renowned thoracic surgeon

Dr. Rusch specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancers of the lung, airways (trachea, bronchi), esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall, and pleura (malignant pleural mesothelioma). She was among the first women in the U.S. to be board certified in thoracic surgery.

For more than 30 years, she has emphasized a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients with thoracic malignancy. Her research has focused on the molecular behaviors of asbestos cancers and the genetic tendencies of lung cancer as a means to identify certain cancers in the earlier stages.

Dr. Rusch has been a leader in national and international clinical trials for the treatment of thoracic malignancies and played a pivotal role in establishing the ACS Oncology Group—now the ACS Clinical Research Program. Among her many honors, in 2007, Dr. Rusch received the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education Socrates Award, and in 2012, the Association of Women Surgeons awarded her the Nina Starr Braunwald Award for lifetime contributions to the advancement of women in surgery.

She has held 25 visiting professorships and lectureships and given more than 300 major lectures on thoracic cancers at medical conferences around the world. Her curriculum vitae boasts more than 400 peer-reviewed publications.

In addition to the ACS, Dr. Rusch has been a leader of other surgical organizations. More specifically, she served as chair of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, chair of the Lung and Esophagus Task Force of the American Joint Commission on Cancer, and chair of the Mesothelioma Subcommittee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Staging Committee.

After hearing the news Justice Ruth Ginsburg needed to have cancerous nodules removed from her lungs, one doctor believes the future is not so bright for the oldest justice on the court.

According to Dr. Brian C. Joondeph, of Denver, Ginsburg could have a less than 3 percent chance of surviving more than five years.

Is She Hiding Something?

Much of the conjecture around Ginsburg’s health has come from how coy she was about her health after she broke her ribs.

While doing an interview weeks after the initial injury, she told a journalist she was feeling much better and close to 100 percent.

However, we found out the very next day she was admitted to the hospital to have the nodules removed from her lungs.

Dr. Joondeph, who writes for the Daily Caller, believes things could be far worse for Ginsburg than she is letting on in public.

The Diagnosis

It is important to note, Dr. Joondeph has not yet examined Ruth Ginsburg.

He is merely basing his possible diagnosis on the reports he has seen publicly.

But Ginsburg has had two previous bouts with cancer: first in 1999, then in 2009.

Oddly enough, this third bout with cancer is once again a decade later.

Additionally, Dr. Joondeph stated the lungs are a “common site for metastatic cancer.”

Because the blood flows through the lungs and throughout the entire body, this recent occurrence should be of particular concern because her blood could be carrying the cancerous cells throughout her body.

According to Dr. Joondeph, if the cancer is, in fact, metastatic, it would be “considered stage IV, with the worst prognosis.”

The survival rate for this type of cancer is not good, at 15 percent for stage IV colon cancer.

For pancreatic cancer, “the five-year survival for stage IV disease is much worse at only 3 percent.”

One of the main concerns of Dr. Joondeph is her age, which, along with the treatments that she may need to cure these medical problems, could hurt her mental state.

When the time comes for Ginsburg to retire — and if Trump is still in the White House then — Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings will be like child’s play.

There is simply no way Democrats will allow Trump to give conservatives a 6-3 advantage on the Supreme Court without a fight.
