Vatican confirms Pope Francis and two aides test positive for Coronavirus

The Vatican has confirmed in a statement that Pope Francis and two of his aides have tested positive for the novel Coronavirus.

The three new cases add up to the over 400 cases confirmed in Italy under a week.

Pope Francis missed a planned Mass with clergy in Rome yesterday after showing Coronavirus-like symptoms.

The Vatican had earlier said the pontiff, 83, had a slight indisposition and could proceed with the rest of his planned work today.

The pope and his aides have been quarantined and receiving medical attention near Santa Marta, the Vatican hotel where he lives.

The pope was seen coughing and blowing his nose during the Asha Wednesday Mass.

Iran's ex-ambassador to Vatican dies of coronavirus

Iran’s former ambassador to the Vatican and prominent cleric Hadi Khosrowshahi died of coronavirus, local media reported on Thursday, Anadolu Agency reports.

According to the semiofficial Tasnim News Agency, the 81-year-old cleric died at a hospital in Iran.

Earlier in the day, Iran put the death toll in the country from the coronavirus to 26, with 245 confirmed cases.

The global death toll is nearly 2,800, and China, where the outbreak originated, is the worst hit, with more than 78,000 cases and over 2,700 fatalities.

Coke and Pepsi Are Getting Sued for Lying About Recycling: “At this rate, plastic is set to outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050,” the complaint reads.

Coke, Pepsi and several other big plastic polluters are getting sued for lying about their products’ recyclability and clogging up the oceans with millions of tons of waste.

A California-based environmental group, the Earth Island Institute, filed the lawsuit in San Mateo County on Thursday against the companies, arguing that they’ve knowingly polluted the oceans while misleading the public. The lawsuit notes that 8 million to 20 million tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans every year — and that much of it can be traced back to these few companies.

“At this rate, plastic is set to outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050,” the complaint reads.

The lawsuit calls on these companies to pay to clean up the mess they’ve allegedly made — and to stop labeling their plastic bottles as recyclable. Convincing the public that the solution to plastics pollution is recycling is fundamentally misleading, the complaint argues, because so little plastic actually gets recycled.

Recent studies suggest of the plastic produced since the 1950s, 91% of it hasn’t been recycled. Instead, the scrap winds up in landfills, burned in incinerators, or in the oceans.

Muddy Waters’ Short-Target NMC Health, a FTSE 100 Company, Admits Doctoring Accounts on Massive Scale. Shares Suspended

The shares of NMC Health, a component of the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE-100 Index, were suspended on Thursday after an internal review revealed a morass of fraudulent accounting and fiduciary shenanigans. The CEO of NMC Health — which has health-care operations in 19 countries and is based in the UAE — was fired and its CFO placed on extended sick leave. The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority is investigating.

At the heart of the scandal is an arrangement that apparently enabled other companies controlled by NMC’s founder, the Indian-born billionaire Bavaguthu Raghuram Shetty, and two Emirati shareholders, Khaleefa Al Muhairi and Saeed al-Qebaisi, to raise £260 million in secret off-balance sheet financing, without the knowledge of the company’s board. There are also indications that the company’s shareholder register was falsified, and that some 20 million of the shares supposedly held by Shetty, worth around £185 million, are actually beneficially owned by his two Emirati partners.

“These arrangements were not disclosed to, or approved by, the board and were not disclosed to as related-party transactions in accordance with the listing rules,” the company said in a statement, adding: “The arrangements were not reflected on the company’s balance sheet.”

WASHINGTON — On the eve of Israel’s third election in a year, Blue and White leader Benny Gantz told thousands of American Jews that he would not allow Israel to become a partisan issue in the United States if he is elected prime minister.

In an attempt to draw a contrast to his rival, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the former IDF chief of staff seized on the ostensible antipathy that leading Democratic candidates have expressed for the Israeli premier and his right-wing brand of politics.

“Under my leadership, Israel will never become a partisan issue,” he told 18,000 gathered for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual policy conference in Washington, DC, on Sunday morning. “I will effectively work with both sides of the aisle.”

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is also skipping the conference, while former vice president Joe Biden, former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar will speak via video address.

Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is the only 2020 hopeful to address the conference’s attendees in person.

Netanyahu has been accused of alienating Democrats over the course of his tenure, first by strongly opposing former president Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran — including by delivering an address to Congress lambasting the accord — and by striking a strong alliance with US President Donald Trump.

Gantz sought to appeal to American Jews in other ways, too. He vowed to honor an agreement to expand a pluralistic prayer section at the Western Wall — an arrangement that Netanyahu froze indefinitely under pressure from the ultra-Orthodox parties in his coalition. The move infuriated liberal Jewry.

“When I am prime minister, every Jew will have a place in the Western Wall,” Gantz told AIPAC. “Every Jew should feel at home in Israel. Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people. All the Jewish people.”

While Gantz lavished praise on Trump’s peace plan unveiled in late January — which he called a “promising” and “strategic” solution — he vowed to work to separate Israel from the Palestinians in a way that would ensure its future as a Jewish democracy.

Gantz also promoted his security bona fides, saying he wouldn’t allow Iran to acquire a nuclear arsenal.

Syria, Libya’s Eastern Government Agree to Open Diplomatic Missions, Restore Ties

yrian-Libyan ties were frozen in late 2011, soon after the victory of anti-Gaddafi forces in Libya which recognized a loose coalition of armed anti-Assad militants as the Syria’s “sole legitimate government.”

Tobruk-based government Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdul-Hadi Al-Hawaij and Deputy Prime Minister Abdul-Rahman al-Ahiresh arrived in Damascus on Sunday for talks with their Syrian counterparts, signing a host of joint cooperation agreements and approving the restoration of diplomatic relations.

According to Syrian media, the agreements included a memorandum of understanding (MoU) committing Damascus and Tobruk to “reactivating” ties, reopening diplomatic missions and “coordinating the two countries’ stances at international and regional forums, particularly in standing in the face of Turkish interference and aggression…in addition to enhancing cooperation in all spheres.”

The eastern Libyan delegation was said to include Libyan National Army officials and the head of the Tobruk-based intelligence service, with talks said to have included the need for increased cooperation in addressing the common challenges of terrorism and foreign-backed mercenaries.

Libyan officials were greeted by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, who also serves as Syria’s deputy prime minister, and other Syrian officials.

Muallem was said to have emphasized the “special status” of ties between Syria and its Libyan “brothers,” with the two countries said to be facing many of the same problems in the security sphere.

Damascus confirmed diplomatic relations would be resumed at embassies in Damascus and Benghazi, with Syria also planning to reopen its embassy in Tripoli at some point in the future.

‘Common Turkish Threat’

Both Syria and Libya’s Tobruk-based government, the latter supported by Field Marshal Khalifa Khaftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA), have faced off against Turkish and Turkish-backed forces in recent weeks.

It’s a step away from their previous policy wherein they asked students to get their own devices on which they were comfortable. In fact, iPads were their go-to textbooks for the last few years. Until now.

The school administration has decided to do away with iPads and other such devices because they believe that the main purpose isn’t being served. The technological advancement and development which they thought children would acquire through iPads never saw the light of day. But there have been some concerns raised by parents who believe that e-books are the future, and children would do better with iPads at their behest.

Ironically, the entire decision was taken up by students themselves, who felt that their needs were better served using pages, rather than a digital interface. But this change is in stark contrast to the ongoing technological change that is taking place in most schools around the globe where students and staff are doing away with books to get their hands on iPads.

What does science have to say about this entire situation?

Well, there have been multiple studies that show the pros and cons of digital education – one of them posited in Canada. According to this study, around 6000 students use iPads to study daily. And these devices have both pros and cons – pros being the efficiency with which they can gather knowledge and information, and cons being the inability to type for long stretches of time.

Bizarre Pink-Colored Smoke Over Canadian Town Worries Residents

Residents of one town in Canada were confused Friday morning when they saw pinkish-purple smoke filling the skies.

Images of the unusual color smoke over Edmonton started appearing on social media as residents began calling local police in an attempt to figure out what was going on.

According to city officials, the smoke was the result of a power failure at Enerkem Alberta Biofuels, an ethanol plant. The plant turns trash into ethanol that is used to power cars and trucks.

“There was a release of a substance which resulted in a large purple cloud,” a statement from Enerkem read.

City of Edmonton Emergency Response Teams intervened quickly and deemed the area safe after conducting a prompt investigation.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokeswoman Suzzette Mellado said that a single crew responded to the incident 17 minutes after the smoke first appeared. The crew found smoke but no fire.

Officials have reported that the unusual smoke posed no risk to the public or to the environment, despite its bright color.

City of Edmonton spokeswoman Nicole Paradis reported that officials would “continue looking into the situation.” Paradis also said, “The quantity of substance that was evacuated in the air is below occupational exposure limits and there are no safety or health concerns.”

The Enerkem plant apologized for “any inconvenience or alarm” caused by the incident.

According to Fox43, a plant in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania emitted colored smoke in 2019 thanks to a load of garbage that contained iodine.

The Enerkem facility has resumed regular operations.

China’s Non-Manufacturing & Manufacturing PMIs Show to What Unfathomable Extent the Economy Has Collapsed

The charts are brutal.

Purchasing Managers’ Indices (PMIs) are a tally of how executives see their own company – whether business activity at their company rose or fell compared to the prior month, whether new orders rose or fell, whether they added or shed staff, etc. Executives and their companies remain unnamed. A value above 50 means expansion; a value below 50 means contraction. PMIs are an early indication of business conditions – and by extension, of the economy.

And in China, both, the PMI for the non-manufacturing sector and the PMI for the manufacturing sector, released on March 1, have collapsed to unfathomable lows, showing to what extent the measures to impede the spread of the coronavirus have shut down the economy.

Even non-manufacturing activity collapses.

The official Non-Manufacturing PMI, released by the National Bureau of Statistics, collapsed from 54.1 in January (still well into expansion mode) to a previously unthinkable low of 29.6 in February. The horizontal gray line at 50 in the chart indicates stagnation. Below 50 means contraction. Since 2007, China’s non-manufacturing sector has grown every single month. Until February:

The non-manufacturing PMI is broader than just services. It also includes the retail sector and construction. Here are some other standouts:

New orders plunged to 26.5, with export orders plunging to 26.8

Employment, which had already been in contraction in January (48.6) dropped to 37.9

Input prices fell to 49.3 (from 53.3)

Output prices fell to 43.9.

Confidence plunged from 59.6 in January to 40.0 in February.

Manufacturing collapses, but it’s worse than it looks.

The official China Manufacturing PMI, released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, had already been either in the doldrums or in outright contraction for the past 14 months. In January it was at 50.0, the stagnation point. In February it collapsed to a previously unfathomable 35.7:

But it’s even worse than it looks, as the index was likely distorted to upside, due to the way a sub-index, “supplier delivery times,” is figured into the headline PMI, according to Lu Ting, chief China economist at Nomura Holdings in Hong Kong.

The headline PMI is based on a number of sub-indices. One of them is “supplier delivery times,” which accounts for 15% of the headline PMI. Normally, when supplier delivery times rise, it’s a sign of strengthening conditions in the manufacturing sector: there is a lot of demand, and suppliers are struggling to meet that demand. So longer delivery times add to the headline PMI index value.

But this time, the supplier delivery times rose because the transportation system was partially shut down, travel bans had been imposed, entire cities had been locked down, and many suppliers were shut down. With manufacturers’ supply chains cut to shreds, factories had trouble getting components and supplies.

According to Nomura’s report, if the supplier delivery times index hadn’t surged, but had remained at the same as in January, the headline PMI index would have dropped to 33.

And the sub-index for manufacturing exports orders collapsed to 28.7:

This plunge in the non-manufacturing PMI and the manufacturing PMI shows the mindboggling extent to which China’s economy has been disrupted by the coronavirus-containment methods in February.

And there is something else.

Friday evening, the homepage of the English-language website of the National Bureau of Statistics of China where I normally get the PMI data was still accessible, but the page with the data for the PMIs was not accessible and showed a “502 Bad Gateway” error. Did Turkey Just Sacrifice Their Own Troops to Protect Al-Qaeda?

After 33 Turkish troops were killed in a Syrian army offensive on February 27 amidst the current Russia-backed campaign to liberate Idlib, Erdogan responded by laying the blame entirely on Russia and Syria – successfully avoiding all mention of the uncomfortable fact that Turkey has been protecting radical terror networks not only in Idlib but across Syria as a whole for years.

During this time, Islamist forces within Turkey favorable to Assad’s overthrow have been attempting to play a complex game of geopolitics for which they are totally unqualified.

Turkey in over its head

One of the most wild-card members of NATO, Turkey had originally been preparing itself to gain entry into the European Union with the promise of being granted local control across the Middle East as a loyal member of the New World Order. This ambition for a revived Ottoman Empire made Erdogan an enthusiastic proponent of regime change in the Middle East, and as journalist Eva Bartlett has documented for years, resulted in Turkey’s role as supplier of logistics, military hardware, training and monetary support to the various terrorist groups masquerading as anti-Assad regime freedom fighters.

When this policy nearly resulted in Turkey being wiped off the map after shooting down a Russian jet in Syrian airspace on November 24, 2015 (the claims that it had flown into Turkish airspace have long been debunked), Erdogan began to change his tune first sending a letter of apology to Putin on June 27, 2016, whereby it began to change its behaviour dramatically. For this shift in policy, Turkey was thanked by Washington with a nation-wide coup d’etat effort launched by followers of the strange CIA-asset Fethullah Gülen on July 15, 2016.

This hefty serving of humble pie brought a dose of sanity to Turkey which toned down its pro-regime change rhetoric, opened up diplomatic channels with Syria and Russia, cut down many of its ISIS supporting operations (especially its role as primary purchaser of oil stolen by ISIS from Syrian oilfields), and settled with a more benign role in the region… but not entirely.

Part of the 2017 Astana negotiations (and later Russia-Syria-Turkey-Iran negotiations in Sochi) involved Turkey’s establishment of 12 military observation posts in Idlib province which increased Turkey’s already significant Idlib military installations to 29.

What they were doing there was never addressed in the western press but in 2017 Brett McGurk, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition Against ISIL stated at a Middle East Policy forum that “Idlib province is the largest al-Qaeda safe haven since 9/11.” In a rare moment of cogency in 2014 even rambling Joe Biden admitted that Turkey was a major sponsor of ISIS (for which he was duly slapped and then apologized). All signs of that sort of honesty have long disappeared from Biden’s mind, leaving Tulsi Gabbard as the only presidential figure today who has raised this uncomfortable fact.

In opposition to Ankara’s demands that the current anti-terrorist Idlib operation be halted going so far as to threaten war with Russia, Syrian-Russian forces have continued full speed with great success knowing that if this last zone of insurgents is cleansed then all remaining terrorist threats to the region can be properly addressed and reconstruction can begin. It isn’t a secret that this reconstruction would be guided in large measure by a new partnership with Russia and China in the region which have offered billions of dollars, and engineering assistance for years guided by the Belt and Road Initiative. The BRI’s designs run directly through Iran, Iraq and Syria- all of whom would be transformed by this multi-trillion dollar initiative.

The tide might be turning in the cultural aspect of our massive hybrid war, in which we find ourselves. Yesterday, I stumbled on two videos, where members of the LGBT community have reached “peak-LGBT” and now refer to themselves as “conservative”.

Looks like the #WalkAway movement is here to stay. I see it everywhere on Twitter. Many African-Americans are moving away from the Democrat Party, as are women, Asians and Hispanics. Most surprising to me is to see what appears to be the majority of Native Americans are supporting Trump in 2020.

It’s a humanizing moment. We’ve all been manipulated by this hybrid warfare campaign, in which everything is weaponized, especially us against each other.

One of the biggest fronts in the hybrid war involves sexual preference and all of the shame and taboo that make it very hard to break the ideology/programming around it. But Kitty Demure and Arielle Scarcella have broken it.

Kitty Demure calls himself “Your friendly, favorite conservative drag queen”. He has posted the video message below to “heterosexual women who have children” in regards to the Drag Queen Story Hours that are being held for children aged 3-11 in public libraries since 2015. Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) is a non-profit organization with fifty chapters, five of which are international.

“I have no idea why you want drag queens to read books to your children. I have no idea. What in the Hell has a drag queen ever done to make you have so much respect for them and admire them so much, other than put on makeup and and jump on the floor and ride around and do sexual things on stage?

Syrian Forces Counter-Attack Near Saraqib As Air War Heats Up Over Idlib

On March 1, the Syrian Army and Hezbollah launched a counter-attack on Turkish-led forces in the area of Saraqib retaking the villages of Jawbas, San, Dadikh and Kafr Battikh, and forcing Turkish-backed militants to retreat from the eastern part of Saraqib itself.

According to pro-government sources, Syrian artillery and air forces were carrying out an active bombing campaign in support of this attack. Russian warplanes were also involved.

These developments took place amid the heating up air war over Greater Idlib. Turkish state media reported that Turkish artillery and drones had targeted Al-Nayrab military airport operated by the Syrian military near Aleppo city.

US Air Force Revamps Service Song With Gender-Neutral Lyrics

Gendered references have been removed from the US Air Force’s service song in an effort to be inclusive to all troops rather than just men.

“Our song must reflect our history, the inspiring service and accomplishments of all who’ve served, and the rich diversity that makes today’s Air Force indisputably the strongest and most capable in the world,” US Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein said in a February 27 news release to the service.

The changes will only apply to the third verse of the US Air Force Song, which previously said “a toast to the host of the men we boast.”

The revamped verse will now be sung with the lyrics:

“Here’s a toast to the host

Of those who love the vastness of the sky,

To a friend we send a message of the brave who serve on high.

We drink to those who gave their all of old,

Then down we roar to score the rainbow’s pot of gold.

A toast to the host of those we boast, the US Air Force!”

Goldfein said that moving forward, the service will continue to look into possible additional changes to the song. The chief also noted that he is aware that the announcement of gender-neutral lyrics “will draw notice and spark debate,” as the song has been performed at a number of service funerals and ceremonies.

“In making this decision, I respect the views of others who will not agree. But I also know with absolute certainty and clarity that these changes are about adding to, not subtracting from, who we are,” Goldfein asserted. “Changing the lyrics in no way diminishes the history and accomplishments of men or dilutes our eternal gratitude for their sacrifice and bravery.”

Military.com reported that in the 2019 graduating class of the Air Force Academy, 26.5% (or 329) of the service members were women. At the same time, the academy had its highest ever proportion of female applicants for the class of 2023 at 31.2%.

This number of female applicants has been on a constant rise in the Air Force, with women making up 28.6%, 29.3% and 30.5% of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 applicant classes, respectively.

Goldfein argued that if the service is going to ask women to “go into combat and fight just as women have done for a generation,” then they should not be left out of the US Air Force Song.

Mail got from Detroit to Toledo FASTER in the days of steam than it does now. Until local piddly-dink cities (looking at YOU, Rockwood, MI) started putting 25 mph speed limits on trains, the MCRR and the NYCRR went through town at 100 mph. Once they got through over the bridge in River Rouge, it was "high ball you all" straight shot to Toledo. From there, similar mains ran east and west at similar speeds. Drop it off at the depot, take a cab to Detroit City Airport, non-stop to Chicago, pick the letter up … it would be waiting.

The Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office filed an indictment on Sunday with the Jerusalem District Court against Rabbi Eliezer Berland for an alleged multi-million shekel scheme to trick followers into giving him massive amounts of money in exchange for promises to heal them miraculously.

According to the indictment, Berland not only promised followers he could heal them, but in some instances offered to resurrect dead people for money.

Another aspect of the indictment dealt with Berland’s command to his followers to attack and break the bones of some of their family members.

The indictment said that Berland is the head of a cult with thousands of followers who treat his orders as practically divine commands. Berland’s method of operation was to collect some thousands of shekels from each follower-victim and then to launder the funds in a variety of his allies’ private accounts or in private real estate.

While the indictment contains charges for a multi-million shekel fraud, there are reports that Berland could be worth up to NIS 1 billion, but that the police hit limits in how much they could uncover since many members of his cult remain loyal to him to this day.

Next, the indictment said that the fraud perpetrated by Berland and sometimes by aides of his, went on from 2014-2020, including during a time period when he was in jail on a previous conviction.

In 2016, the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court approved a plea bargain for Berland in which he pled guilty to two counts of indecent assault.

Berland was sentenced to 18 months in prison incarceration for his sexual attacks on two women, as well as his instructions to assault the husband of one of the women, but was released early due to poor health.

U.S. Accountant Pleads Guilty in Panama Papers Investigation

A Massachusetts-based accountant who was charged along with three others in connection with a decades-long criminal scheme perpetrated by Mossack Fonseca & Co. (Mossack Fonseca), a Panamanian-based global law firm, and its related entities, pleaded guilty today to wire and tax fraud, money laundering, aggravated identity theft and other charges.

Richard Gaffey, aka “Dick Gaffey,” 75, of Medfield, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit tax evasion and to defraud the United States, one count of wire fraud, one count of money laundering conspiracy, four counts of willful failure to file Reports of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network Reports 114), and one count of aggravated identity theft.

“This defendant worked with the Mossack Fonseca law firm and exploited his role as an accountant to create fraudulent shell companies and defraud the United States of millions of dollars over decades,” said Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Today’s guilty plea reflects the Department’s commitment to prosecute financial professionals and other gatekeepers to the U.S. financial system who abuse the public’s trust.”

“Richard Gaffey went to extraordinary lengths to circumvent U.S. tax laws in order to maintain Harald Joachim von der Goltz’s wealth and hide it from the IRS,” said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman of the Southern District of New York. “Using the specialized criminal services of global law firm Mossack Fonseca, Gaffey assisted others in violating U.S. tax laws for decades.”

According to the allegations contained in the indictments, other filings in this case, and statements during court proceedings, including Gaffey’s guilty plea hearing, since at least 2000 through 2018, Gaffey conspired with others to defraud the United States by concealing his clients’ assets and investments, and the income generated by those assets and investments, from the IRS through fraudulent, deceitful, and dishonest means.

Major court ruling 'vindicated' Trump on impeachment, reveals 'abuse' of House Dems

'It reaffirms the historic blunder of the House in rushing this impeachment'

According to constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley, the court's ruling has significant implications on the nature of Democrats' efforts to impeach Trump.

What did the court rule?

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in a split 2-1 decision that McGahn could defy subpoenas issued by the House Judiciary Committee.

Essentially, the court ruled that it did not have the constitutional authority to resolve the stalemate between the White House and Congress, urging Congress seek other remedies outside of the judicial system.

"We cannot decide this case without declaring the actions of one [branch of government] or the other unconstitutional," Appellate Judge Thomas Griffith wrote.

"If federal courts were to swoop in to rescue Congress whenever its constitutional tools failed, it would not just supplement the political process; it would replace that process with one in which unelected judges become the perpetual "overseer[s]" of our elected officials. That is not the role of judges in our democracy, and that is why Article III compels us to dismiss this case," he explained.

McGahn was a key witness in Robert Mueller's investigation — in fact, his name was cited more than 150 times in Mueller's report — and House Democrats have been trying since last year to force McGahn to testify about his involvement in the investigation.

McGahn, however, has defied committee subpoenas.

What did Turley say?

The George Washington University Law School professor said the court ruling "vindicated" the White House with regard to the second article of impeachment, which claimed that Trump had obstructed Congress by having officials ignore congressional subpoenas.

"The White House is vindicated in showing that it had valid constitutional arguments to make – arguments ridiculed at the Senate trial," Turley explained.

"I do not agree with the court's analysis but I felt that Trump had a right to seek judicial review. Now that judicial review has shown that the court agrees with his constitutional position. It reaffirms the historic blunder of the House in rushing this impeachment," he continued.

Turley went on to characterize the second article of impeachment, in light of the court's ruling, as "a case of prosecutorial excess, if not abuse."

Democrats have until March 9 to appeal the ruling, where they can request a new hearing before the same panel of judges or an en banc hearing before the entire 11-person D.C. Circuit Court.

The Constitution’s Seven Money Clauses

They protect liberty and prosperity — when we follow them.

Seven clauses of the United States Constitution touch on questions that might be described as relating to monetary policy.

Properly interpreted, these seven clauses together form a system of rules that strongly protects economic prosperity and political liberty.

Four of the clauses include the word ‘money,’ three include the word ‘coin,’ and two include the word ‘dollars.’ /1

Below is the text of each of the clauses, followed by some definitions and comments.

The Seven Money Clauses

“Congress shall have Power … To borrow Money on the credit of the United States[.]” Art. I, sec. 8, cl. 2.

“Congress shall have Power … To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures[.]” Art. I, sec. 8, cl. 5.

“Congress shall have Power … To provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States[.]” Art. I, sec. 8, cl. 6.

“No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law[.]” Art. I, sec. 9, cl. 7.

“The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.” Art. I, sec. 9, cl. 1.

“No State shall … coin money; emit bills of credit; [or] make any Thing but gold and silver coin a Tender in Payment of Debts[.]” Art. I, sec. 10, cl. 1.

“In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved[.]” Amdt. VII.

The Constitution’s Five Monetary Rules

Read in conjunction with the Ninth and Tenth Amendments, and the obligation-of-contracts clause (Art. I, sec. 10, cl. 1), we can identify five monetary policies that are constitutionally requisite in the United States:

The basic unit is the dollar, a silver coin containing 371.25 grains of pure silver.

Only gold or silver coins and currency (specie-backed banknotes) can be legal tender.

No state may issue coins or currency.

No one may counterfeit U.S. Government-issued coins or currency.
