Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad has entered into a military and political alliance with Libyan Field Marshal Haftar to jointly oppose Turkey's armed intervention, reports the French newspaper Le Monde.

According to the newspaper, a new military and political axis of Damascus-Benghazi is being formed. It is "a sign of the growing expansion of the Syrian and Libyan theatres of war with serious implications for regional geopolitics."

On Tuesday, March 3, the unrecognized Eastern Libya’s government, which supports Marshal Khalifa Haftar, reopened the Libyan embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since 2012. East Libyan delegates and their Syrian counterparts have formally pledged to jointly confront “Turkey's aggression against the two countries”.

In addition, the newspaper writes that one and a half thousand Syrian fighters joined the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Haftar.

They will help Haftar in the fight against the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA). They are well-trained special forces fighters who have been recruited in Syria since 2018. In general, the LNA is aided by Druze, natives of Ghouta (a suburb of Damascus). Thir salaries range from $800 to $1,500.

Iran nearly triples stockpile of enriched uranium, UN agency says VIENNA — Iran has nearly tripled its stockpile of enriched uranium since November in violation of its deal with world powers, U.N. atomic watchdog agency said Tuesday, while raising new questions about possible nuclear-related activities and undeclared nuclear material at three locations.

The International Atomic Energy Agency made the statement in a confidential report distributed to member countries that was seen by The Associated Press. The agency said as of Feb. 19, Iran's total stockpile of low-enriched uranium amounted to 1,020.9 kilograms (1.1 tons), compared to 372.3 kilograms on Nov. 3, 2019, noted in its November report.

Only two milligrams absorbed, inhaled, or swallowed can be fatal, officials warmed.

The agents arrested the two juvenile teens and seized the drugs and the van. Border Patrol officials did not provide an estimated value of the drugs. An article posted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) estimated the value of fentanyl at about $900,000 per kilo.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents conducted a traffic stop on a 2016 Nissan Frontier on Interstate 215 during the evening of March 4, officials reported. Following an alert by a K-9 team, agents search the vehicle and found 27 bundles that tested positive for cocaine. The smugglers allegedly hid the drugs in the front and rear seats.

The 27 packets weighed approximately 71 pounds and had an estimated street value of $786,450.

“In the last 72 hours San Diego Sector has seized over 117 pounds of lethal narcotics worth more than $1,300,000,” San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said in a written statement. “Thankfully these dangerous drugs will not reach our local communities.”

The agents arrested the 32-year-old U.S. citizen driver and turned the drugs over to the DEA.

BEIJING – The People’s Republic of China has not changed its mind and still has no intention to join any trilateral arms control talks with the United States and Russia, the foreign ministry said on Friday in the wake of Washington’s renewed invitation for such negotiations.

Church leaders paid out about $750 million from the early ’80s through 2002, according to BishopAccountability.org, a nonprofit that tracks clergy sex abuse.

The veil of secrecy on these transactions was pierced when the Boston Globe published its investigations into church sex abuse in 2002, sparking public outrage at how clergy had protected their own. From 1950 to 2002, 4,392 priests were accused of abuse, according to a study by John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

The pace of lawsuits escalated as public awareness grew, and besieged church leaders looked to a new option: bankruptcy. When a church district that’s been sued files for Chapter 11 and then reaches a bankruptcy settlement, a percentage of its assets are divvied up by victims. Like Fortune 500 executives—and more recently the Sacklers, the family that owns OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP—church leaders see bankruptcy as an attractive solution because it provides a controlled process for settling a large number of lawsuits while holding on to as many assets as possible.

Another benefit is secrecy. Lawsuits and trials lead to testimony and publicity. Bankruptcy ensures a quieter mass settlement that forces an end to existing lawsuits and blocks new ones. “It provides a clean slate,” says Robert Kugler, a lawyer who represented abuse victims in the St. Paul and Minneapolis archdiocese. Dioceses have gone this route more than 20 times since 2004, when the Archdiocese of Portland, Ore., declared itself insolvent.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military and its warfighting command centers in the Pentagon are prepared to continue operations even if there is a local outbreak of the new coronavirus, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Thursday, as the department began finalizing its response plans.

Already on Thursday, workers were wiping down doorknobs at the Mark Center, a major Defense Department complex in northern Virginia, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff had set up a 24-hour operations center inside the Pentagon to track the virus and any impact on the military.

Esper said that U.S. Forces Korea, where the solder and his wife and child tested positive, has set up a good model for other military commands to follow.

Army Gen. Robert Abrams, top commander of U.S. forces in Korea, has implemented restrictions on off-base travel — to include non-essential social events and “eat-in seated dining” — and allowed non-essential civilian workers and contractors to stay home. Abrams has also kept up a constant barrage of information to the troops, ranging from simple hygiene procedures to updates and even photos on Twitter of his visits with personnel affected by the virus.

NY Major Crime Soars. Police Blame Bail Reform.

Major crimes soared in February in New York City, and New York Police Department (NYPD) officials blame one change that was implemented for the uptick: bail reform. The NYPD stated in a press release, “Criminal justice reforms serve as a significant reason New York City has seen this uptick in crime.”

According to the NYPD, compared to February 2019, major crimes grew 22.5%; in addition, the city suffered a 7.1% increase in shootings. The city also saw a rise in robbery, assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny, according to Fox News. The only piece of good news was that murder plunged 20%.

Fox News added, “The NYPD says that in the first 58 days of 2020, 482 individuals who had already been arrested for committing a felony such as robbery or burglary were rearrested for committing an additional 846 crimes. Thirty-five percent, or 299, were for arrests in the seven major crime categories – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto – that is nearly triple the amount of those crimes committed in the same 58 days in 2019.”

The New York Post pointed out, “All of the 482 suspects could have landed in jail prior to Jan. 1 when the state’s new bail reform law kicked in and prohibited pretrial detention in most misdemeanors and some nonviolent felonies, the NYPD said.”

The NYPD revealed that New York prosecutors declined to prosecute 803 crimes in January and February; last year that figure was 527 cases.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea stated, “Each number presents a victim. We will continue to work hand-in-hand with New Yorkers and our law enforcement partners to zero in on the drivers of crime and deliver justice for the victims.”

In early January, Barry Latzer, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY,explained in National Review:

The new law prohibits arraignment judges (the ones that handle an arrested person’s first court appearance) from demanding bail for certain defendants or remanding them to jail. Instead, they must release the defendant on his own recognizance (ROR). This release order supposedly does not apply to violent felony offenders. However, numerous crimes of violence or potential violence are found among the state’s so-called nonviolent felonies, including certain robberies, rapes, and assaults.

And judges in New York — unlike judges in 46 other states — may not take public safety into account when deciding whether or not to release someone. While New York law directs arraignment judges to focus on the likelihood of return when ruling on release, it does not provide for an assessment of the risk of nonappearance.

He concluded, “It is true that defendants who have been arrested but not yet convicted should not be punished. It is also true that without some security — cash deposits, bail, or jail — many thousands of these defendants will never show up for their day in court, and some will commit additional crimes once freed. The balance between individual rights and public safety is best achieved by letting the judges determine on a case-by-case basis who is a flight risk or a danger to the public and helping them make this determination through data-based assessments. There is nothing extraordinary in the unlimited number of presidential terms, Putin stated.
