Greg Wilpert: It’s the Real News Network. I’m Greg Wilpert in Arlington, Virginia.

In 2019, a record number of 1640 CEOs resigned from major corporations. For January 2020 alone, the number was 219, indicating that CEO departures could reach an even higher number this year. Prominent CEOs to leave or announce their departures in 2020 include the CEOs of Match Group, [inaudible 00:00:28], L Brands, Outdoor Voices, MasterCard, Fastly, Harley Davidson, IBM, T-mobile, LinkedIn, and Disney, among many others. Why are so many CEOs resigning and why has the number been increasing recently?

The reasons seem to vary. Some analysts talk about a management restructuring, some say it’s because of a failure to meet the company’s goals, others definitely have stepped down because of sexual harassment scandals or because of a failure to address sexual misconduct within their companies. But it cannot be necessarily a coincidence that CEOs are departing at an increasing rate. The trend calls for an analysis of what is going on, for which we have our guests Bill Black today.

Bill is a white collar criminologist, former financial regulator, and associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He’s also the author of the book The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One. Thanks for joining us again, Bill.

Bill Black: Thank you.

Greg Wilpert: So, Fortune Magazine says that the reason for the record number of CEO resignations is the MeToo movement because so many CEOs got entangled in scandals over sexual misconduct, either themselves, or for turning a blind eye to what was happening in their own companies. Do you agree with that analysis?

Bill Black: No, but that is a contributor. It is actually one of the remarkable changes in the last several years that one of the best ways for really powerful CEOs to lose their job is to have what used to be described as a consensual sexual relationship with a subordinate.

Greg Wilpert: So one of the things that’s happened is that CEO compensation skyrocketed during the second half of the 20th century and has only continued to accelerate since then. Some sociologists and economists have even argued that the economy entered a managerial revolution in the 1940s and 50s and that we are now in what could be called managerial capitalism, where managers constitute the new ruling class instead of the owners of companies [inaudible 00:02:30]. Would you agree with that? And if so, what does such a high CEO turnover mean for how the upper echelons of our society is run?

Bill Black: Okay, so to do the super brief version of this, we had the rise first of the robber barons, as they were called. These were individuals that not only ran their own companies, they ran all the competitive companies, and the reason we call it antitrust is that there were trust agreements drawn up by the lawyers that facilitated this, that gave one person effective power over all the seeming competitors. So those were the bigger than life entrepreneurs who, you know, literally said money was something you should throw off the back of trains, and were notorious….

“If the situation of generalized panic continues, thousands of businesses, especially small ones, will first enter a liquidity crisis, then close their doors.”

This is all happening just weeks before high season is about to get under way. But with millions and millions of tourists voting with their feet by staying at home, one of Europe’s most important and (until four weeks ago) fastest growing industries is taking a hammering.

The world right now is full of places that should be teeming with people but are not, including many iconic tourist landmarks and attractions. In Italy, home to Europe’s third biggest tourism industry, large parts of the country are on lock down after being hit by the biggest outbreak of the COVID-19 outside of Asia. Many of the most famous tourist attractions have been closed and big international events, including the Venice Carnival, have been cancelled.

The impact on the country’s tourism industry has been brutal, prompting panicked representatives to warn that a “generalized panic” over coronavirus could “sink” the sector. “There is a risk that Italy will drop off the international tourism map altogether,” said Carlo Sangalli, president of Milan’s Chamber of Commerce. “The wave of contagions over the past week is causing huge financial losses that will be difficult to recoup.”

Even by late February, when the outbreak was still in its infancy, €200 million worth of travel and accommodation bookings in March had already been cancelled, reported Italian tourism association Assoturismo Confesercenti. That figure, based on data provided by Italy’s hotels, B&Bs and travel agencies, doesn’t include lost tourist revenue for transport, tour guides, bars, restaurants and shops. Bookings are also “sharply down” until June.

No ordinary flu: Coronavirus and the lessons of the 1918 pandemic for a world on edge

As the death toll and number of people diagnosed with the coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to climb, an expert tells Yahoo News there’s one big lesson that leaders should heed from a pandemic that killed at least 50 million people from 1918 to 1920: “Tell the truth.”

John Barry, author of “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History,” told Yahoo News he commends the breadth of information coming from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and coverage by the media — a candidness that was absent during the 1918 H1N1 pandemic, also known as the Spanish flu. But he condemned President Trump’s assertion on Feb. 28 that the coronavirus is the Democrats’ “new hoax,” and Rush Limbaugh’s claim that it’s “the common cold.”

“Obviously it’s not a hoax and it’s not a common cold,” Barry said. “Those are two of the stupidest comments that any public official has ever made, if you want to count Rush as a public official.”

Trump’s initial downplaying of the coronavirus threat and subsequent remarks have raised some eyebrows. He contradicted health experts during a briefing on Monday when asked about the timeline for a coronavirus vaccine, claiming one could be ready in “three to four months.” Anthony Fauci, MD, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, corrected the president and said a vaccine is at least a year to a year and a half away. At a White House briefing on Feb. 29, Trump claimed that “the markets are very strong,” even though three major stock indexes had just posted their worst weekly percentage drops since the 2008 financial crisis.

During the Spanish flu pandemic, which raged from early 1918 to 1920, media censorship and downright lies were the norm as the U.S. government attempted to keep morale high in the midst of World War I. Other combatant countries, including France and Germany, had similar wartime policies. Even the name “Spanish flu” is a misnomer — a name that stuck after Spain, which was neutral in the conflict and had a free and open press, became the first country to report on the disease.

The actual origins of the Spanish flu are still uncertain. One theory suggests it originated on a military base in Kansas, while another theory gaining traction is that it started, like COVID-19, in a live animal market in China. The close quarters of wartime trenches and military encampments enabled the disease to spread quickly, going on to kill more people in a year than AIDS has killed in 40 years, and more than the bubonic plague killed in a century. In the United States, some 670,000 people died. Yet even as death tolls rose, one U.S. official dismissed the virus as “ordinary influenza by another name.”

“Some of them told outright lies, some of them simply misled,” Barry said of public health officials at the time. “As a general rule, there were very misleading statements in an effort to reassure. The Chicago public health director said, ‘Nothing is done to interfere with the morale of the community.’ And what that meant was, basically he lied every time he made a statement.”

The response from President Woodrow Wilson wasn’t much better.

“They didn’t have a strategy,” Barry said of the Wilson White House. “There was no evidence that anyone ever sat down and tried to come up with a national strategy of how to deal with the pandemic.”

Instead, a policy of optimism and suppression of negative news was pushed vigorously in the hopes of calming a concerned nation.

“It had exactly the opposite effect,” Barry said.

Lack of information led to fear and suspicion, while downplaying the Spanish flu’s lethality resulted in more deaths. During the height of the pandemic, one parade in Philadelphia — the largest in the city’s history — was allowed to proceed despite pleas from concerned local doctors. Shortly afterward, 12,000 Philadelphians died in six weeks.

Now, as the coronavirus becomes a worldwide threat, Barry points to reactions from officials in other countries where lack of transparency has exacerbated the problem.

“You’ve got places like Iran, which behaved exactly like the government did in 1918,” Barry said. “They lied, they didn’t monitor, they hadn’t done anything until it’s too late.”

“I don’t know that anyone could have actually moved fast enough to contain it, but they missed the opportunity.”

So I've been sick since Friday, and the symptoms follow both regular flu and coronavirus (imagine that). I think I am figuring out why so many pepple get super sick with this though.

The first symptoms were sore throat and fever, along with the body aches and chills that accompany fever.

I didnt treat the fever or the aches, but I started getting super hydrated as fast as I could and piled on the blankets. Drank Gatorade, water, and hot herbal tea.

Then came the tickly, tight cough. I think that's where people are going wrong. For that cough, you need to not try to make it go away but rather make it 'worse', which in fact is making it better. This means turning it from dry/unproductive to wet/productive. How to do that? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate AND take plain old Mucinex (or generic guaifenisen) around the clock. This allows you co cough out the crap rather than letting it stay in the bronchial tubes, which is (in my experience) what can lead to worse conditions. I got one of my kids through pneumonia twice when he was a baby without ever setting foot in a hospita orgiving him antibioticsl - thanks to a very intelligent/enlightened pediatrician.

I'm also using tea tree oil in a diffuser nonstop. Tea tree is a natural antipatjigen and it eases breathing too, so it is very helpful.

So far no doc, but the fever is gone and the cough is going from dry to wet. Throat hurts like a bitch but that's from the cough and I have Ricola drops.

Maybe no one wants to know any of this, but maybe it will help some other sickie, which is the only reason I typed it all out

Covid-19 has become a significant headache for the global air travel industry, according to a new report from Jefferies. Then came the first manager revolution, and that’s more the 30s and 40s and 50s, and GM is the quintessential example of that, and it was in contrast to Ford Motor Company. Ford Motor Company of course run by an entrepreneur, GM run by professional managers who had MBAs and such, which didn’t use to be a particular really good way of becoming the head of a company and such.

Then they had the current revolution, which is more the 70s is when it starts taking off and it’s huge by the 80s. And I’ll give just a super brief version. The other thing that’s happening at the same time is all kinds of entities that used to be key restraints, the investment banks, the accounting firms, the credit rating agencies and such, used to be owned in true partnership form, and that meant that all the general partners were subject to what’s called joint and several liability. What that means is, you, the general partner, one of the general partners, need not have done anything wrong. If any of your general partners do anything wrong that causes losses, you personally are on the hook for all of the losses of the partnership. They can come and take your home, your art collection, all those kinds of things.

You can imagine that that made people a whole lot more reluctant to make other people partners because they were on the hook for what they did and made them monitor it as well. So when they move away from partnership to corporation, whoa, this is the era of the massive stock benefits and such. This is the revolution in corporate pay. And the analytics, the way it was sold was, oh, the problem is managers aren’t taking enough risks. Their fuddy duddies. The only way to get fired is to take a big risk and lose, so they, you know, don’t do much and that’s why the United States isn’t as productive as it used to be because they pursue their own interests instead of the interest of the corporation.

So we will align the interests of the CEO with the shareholders by giving them huge stock positions, and that will mean there’ll great managers and they’ll take much more risks, and of course we did this and we made the CEOs massively wealthy. We made it, you know, child’s play for them to engage in accounting fraud, to report huge short term gains, and they based their pay, not as economists said that you should on longterm performance, but on short term pay, which is of course far easier to manipulate.

So that is the, you know, the revolution that has brought us the disaster. And by the way, instead of producing record gains in productivity, productivity gains have roughly been cut in half under this managerial revolution.

Greg Wilpert: Well, the point that you make about connecting CEO compensation to the stock performance is something very important and something many people have analyzed, and of course, obviously, that’s become the main trend. And what I’m wondering though is that if that’s the case, that of course would also tie the compensation and the work of the CEOs very closely, not just to the stock price, but the stock price is also to some extent dependent on perceptions.

So, in other words, I’m wondering if maybe the trend, you know, the MeToo movement and sexual harassment, the general perception of a company’s performance and its ethics, is ending up having an impact on the CEO’s ability to act, essentially, and if that’s one of the things, in other words, perception becoming more important than perhaps actual productivity and performance.

Bill Black: I don’t think that aspect of it, but perhaps something a little bit analogous that makes your point or draws on your point about perceptions.

So all of this has meant that investors are super, super short term oriented, and that means corporations do all kinds of things that are stupid for the economy, stupid for productivity in the longer run, but which will boost share prices this quarter. So in addition to all the usual, you know, frauds that I talk about using accounting, they simply now, and if anyone wants to read, read professor [inaudible 00:08:24] on this, they do unbelievably huge stock buybacks. So instead of building productive things with their retained earnings, they buy back stock using the corporation’s money, which has the effect of raising stock prices.

So I think what’s really changing right about now is that all of these folks have, you know, had the greatest opportunity to big pigs at the trough in modern history, and that was the Trump tax cut. So again, what really wealthy people put their money in is not so much yachts, because you can only buy so many yachts, is the stock market. All right? And so when you give enormous trillion dollar cuts in taxes of the wealthy people, what are they going to do with all that additional income? Well, you know, after tax income, they’re going to buy more stock, and you’re going to get this huge run up in stocks.

That can only work for so long and we’re overdue for recessions, and we don’t know exactly what’s going to cause it, but, you know, most people think recessions are coming relatively soon. Obviously the coronavirus is pushing a number of countries over that margin into near-term recessions. So I think that first, all these people got incredibly filthy rich. They don’t need money, and they certainly don’t need their current job.

Greg Wilpert: That’s an interesting point, but that brings me to my next and last question, which is that, you know, you have this basic trend of something that we’ve of course talked about everywhere, and progressives in general and Bernie Sanders certainly has pointed it out, is extreme growth in income inequality and in the fact that CEOs are doing so well. Of course, they have the luxury of being able to resign from a job that they’re feeling is getting too stressful.

Joe Biden just weighed in on California’s AB5, the job-killing law that went into effect in January and basically killed countless gig-worker jobs all over the state including such jobs as Uber drivers, entertainers, freelance writers and the like.

Biden has come out in favor of the law which millions have been fighting. This is a concern not just to California but across the country because the House passed the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, the PRO Act which has language taken from AB5, so if Biden becomes president and a president like Trump isn’t there to block it, it may become law and put millions more out of work.

It’s an incredibly stupid law that will kill freelance work. They thought that it would force companies to hire workers rather than pay them as independent contractors. But that would require another level of expense for most companies, especially those just getting by, because then they would be required to do things like provide health insurance and other benefits that they wouldn’t have to now. So they wouldn’t do that, they simply wouldn’t hire the workers because they wouldn’t be able to afford to. Or they wouldn’t be able to hire as many and so all those people will lose their jobs.

People on both sides of the aisle have come out against it because it’s something they understand and it can impact and harm so many people.

Hundreds of thousands of people losing work, could that flip areas of California to the GOP?

The anger against this is immense, there’s literally no one for it except Democratic politicians and union bosses.

And as our friends at Twitchy noticed, a lot of the folks yelling at Biden are folks who are pursuing careers as photographers, writers, musicians, artists and self-employed, the very people and careers that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) claimed Obamacare would free you to pursue. And now a lot of those people are out of jobs in California and may soon be out of jobs across the country if this and Democratic politicians aren’t stopped.

What you have to do, and Jack Welsh has just died at GE, and his nickname that he was proud of was Neutron Jack after the neutron bomb that kills people, but leaves the building standing. So he was infamous for firing people. He was infamous for ranking yank, which is, we will say that we’re firing you because you were a poor performer. So not only will you lose your job, you’ll be stigmatized for life. But who was really being fired? The people who weren’t to play the accounting scams, right? So the best people were being fired and being labeled as the worst people, and the stock price was surging under all of this.

I would like to say, you know, that CEOs are resigning because they don’t want to do that. I frankly don’t think many CEOs resigned because they’re unwilling to do this.

I’m going to describe documents which you can get online. These are the plutonomy memos by Citi to their wealthiest clients, and they call this a managerial aristocracy. That’s their phrase. They say it creates a plutonomy. In other words, an economy in which virtually all the wealth is held by a tiny group of folks and where the workers get a smaller and smaller pie, and they say, since the elections are coming, the key thing, problem, the key risk we have is workers still get to vote and they may eventually go to the polls and stop this.

So they described that as a risk to the continuation of this managerial aristocracy and this ability to take virtually all of the, again, reduced gains because they’re doing stupid things in the way they run the companies that greatly reduced productivity. So it’s a smaller pie. Remember, the justification was a trickle down? Well, you get a big pie, and even if you don’t get much of it, as long as the pie is growing, great. Well now, the growth of the pie has been dramatically reduced by these scams. And as I said, Citi openly says this is going to get even more extreme unless and until the voters rebel.

Greg Wilpert: Wow. Well this is a good point to end, especially considering that in the middle of this week’s, you know, Super Tuesday and the primary season, but we’re going to leave it there for now. The McDonalds opted for an auction to sell the estate quickly. They explored a number of options for the property after they stopped using it as their main residence in 2012, including converting it into a hospice or using it for some other charitable purpose.

It was listed for sale last year for $7.7 million. The McDonalds now split their time between Manhattan and Florida.

The auction had been scheduled for Oct. 25. But a potential buyer stepped forward with an offer before bidding began, according to Platinum Luxury Auctions, the company the McDonalds hired to auction the estate.

The McDonalds and the buyer negotiated and signed a purchase contract over the weekend.

Platinum Luxury Auctions hosted more than 100 visits at the property during a three-week preview period before the auction date.

Tom McDonald made his money in the real estate development business. For a time, he worked for Syracuse-based Pyramid Cos., the owner of Destiny USA. He later started his own firm.

Cathy McDonald previously ran a garden landscaping business and owned a children's clothing business, Mother Goat Clothes For Kids.

The 4.5-acre property includes a main residence, waterside boathouse and a separate guest house. It has natural stone and wood features, multiple fireplaces, a large outdoor living area right on Skaneateles Lake, a pool and a hot tub.

The estate has 10 bedrooms, nine full bathrooms, two half bathrooms and 370 feet of lake frontage. It has more than 15,000 square feet of total living space.

"It was a great place to live," said Vernon Long, who lived in the complex from 1970 to 1981 and manages a recreation program for area youths.

"I have good memories there. My children were raised in there."

With thousands expected to watch, the twin 20-story towers at 1001 Sunnydale Avenue will are scheduled to be destroyed at 2:30 p.m. with 600 pounds of explosives. The cement hulks will collapse onto themselves, making it the biggest implosion this state has ever seen.

Once the ground is cleared, a 341-unit complex will be built on virtually the same spot and, it is hoped, will be devoid of the towers' headaches and mistakes. Geneva Towers was built in 1967 as private housing. But when the buildings failed to attract middle-income renters the owners sought low-income Section 8 tenants whose rents were subsidized by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

For years, the owners pocketed $200,000 a month in federal rent subsidies while the towers fall apart. By the time HUD took over in 1991, Geneva Towers was a den of dope-dealing and violence. The takeover marked the first time the agency ever foreclosed on a property because of unsafe living conditions. Indeed, rival gangs used to battle for tower turf and for a time whole floors of the buildings were controlled by drug dealers.

"The post office would not deliver on site. Pizza parlors would not deliver. The phone company ripped out all the public phones because workers refused to service them," said former Mayor Art Agnos, HUD's acting assistant secretary for housing. "The Police Department wouldn't go into the building unless there were two or three cars for backup." In the towers' heyday, more than 1,000 people lived in the 585 units in the scary-looking mountains of concrete that soared above the neighborhood. As a result of poor management and lax security, criminals operated freely, frightening all those who came near.

"It's been hell for many, many years," said June Jackson, a retired teacher who lives in the neighborhood. "We're very glad to say goodbye." One year alone, police reported seven homicides on the towers' grounds – three in the buildings. It was so bad that even police, often summoned to the place, approached with care, bracing for a dangerous onslaught of missiles from upper balconies – rocks, televisions and once even a bowling ball.

But nothing compared to the chilling reception Deputy Chief Richard Holder got while still a patrolman in the 1970s.

"One of my first calls to that address, as we pulled up in front of the building I recall stepping out of my car and taking a step back . . . and a body landed right next to my car," said Holder, now head of Field Operations. "Patroling the towers was a nightmare," said Holder. "I was shot at several times. We were routinely sniped at." Reason enough for Holder to be ecstatic that the towers are being destroyed.

After the takeover, HUD spent $8 million to make emergency repairs and improve security, and then spent $24 million to operate the buildings. The improvements drastically reduced the criminal activity, said Larry Fleming, who was in charge of maintenance and security from 1991 to 1995. But among other things, electrical problems remained and the tap water still looked and smelled funny, so the relocation of residents began.

In the 1960s, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency uprooted a thriving black community in the Western Addition by razing thousands of homes.

In 1992, the agency acknowledged that it had blundered. This time, HUD signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the city to commit nearly $74 million in community revitalization efforts. The 341 replacement units include 91 units of senior housing, health services, job training, after- school programs and youth services. There will also be a police substation.

One group particularly hurt by the obstructive California law are individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions who often require flexible work options. These men and women are nearly twice as likely to be self-employed compared to those with no disabilities. And now they’re speaking out.

Tiffany Sanders, a California freelancer, wrote in opposition to AB 5: “I have a chronic medical condition that prevents me from working a traditional job…As an independent contractor, I've been able to earn a solid middle class living around that and raise a child to adulthood without child support. If I can't freelance, my only option will be to hope I can qualify for roughly $1,000/month in [Social Security Disability Insurance].”

AB 5 also impacts those caring for others with disabilities. “My daughter has autism, and being a freelancer means I can schedule appointments, therapies, assessments and even just relaxing downtime with her whenever I want. It also means I can do work that starts at 10:00 am instead of 8:00 am on those days she decides not to sleep until 3:00 am,” says Aimee Benavides, California mother and freelancer.

Continuing west on Goffs Road brings motorists back to I-40 northeast of the town of Essex.

Goffs is located at the foothills of the northern terminus of the Piute Mountains; the location is also the southern terminus of the Lanfair Valley which drains south from the east region of the Mojave National Preserve.
