Q and anons, I've been seeing this list of celebrities being Gitmo'd and or executed, circulating on Twitter. Is this true or just shills spreading hopium?

 

This one image with an unnamed person in uniform and big red stamp "Approved" is shilly AF; yet folks are fighting over the veracity and blocking each other over it… SMH Don't get me wrong, I wish it were true and or will be true, but it's ridiculous that too many are taking it as a fact when there's no independent verification… Or did I miss it?

A US Postal worker was caught on video throwing a stack of GOP congressional candidate campaign mailers in a dumpster.

 

Sheriff Troy Nehls is running for Texas Congressional District 22.

 

Mr. Nehls is a pro-Trump conservative, a church-going family man, tough on crime and tough on border security.

 

No wonder why the left is trying to derail his campaign.

 

“A US Postal worker was just caught on video throwing a stack of my campaign mailers in a dumpster. Some patriots nearby heard a noise when she tossed them in & went to investigate. They found a stack of them and called me. No wonder people are skeptical of mail in voting.” Sheriff Nehls said.

Into Darkness: Where The Fed Is Leading Us

 

As you may know, I was one of the very first voices publicly reporting on covid-19, issuing an alert that the virus was a significant pandemic event on Jan 23rd, 2020.

 

This was long before most media outlets even managed to write their first “It’s just the flu, bro!” article.

 

Using the same logic and scientific methodology I was trained in as a PhD, I was able to “predict” things well in advance of nearly every official or mainstream news source.

 

I’m using quotation marks around the word “predict” because it’s not really a prediction when you’re just extrapolating trends that are already underway.

 

Just as it’s not really a “prediction” to estimate where a thrown pitch will travel, it wasn’t much of a prediction to state that a novel virus with an R-Naught (R0) of well over 3 would be extremely difficult to contain once it arrived in a country. Note that I didn’t say impossible — South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam all get high marks for containment — but certainly difficult.

 

The US and the UK proved this in spades, as they’re both led by below-average ‘managers’ rather than leaders.

 

Leaders make tough decisions based on imperfect information. Managers dither and hedge and only make up their minds after the facts are already in and events well underway. Naturally, the US/UK managers were simply no match for the exponential rate that the Honey Badger Virus (aka Covid-19) spreads at.

 

I call it the Honey Badger virus because of its incredible ability to evade quarantine, as eagerly and easily as Stoeffle, as seen in this short enjoyable video:

 

Such a determined foe as covid-19 cannot be reasoned with, halted by decree or – much to the puzzlement of the central banks – resolved by printing more thin-air money.

 

It simply operates by natural laws and rules. Which, by the way, makes it rather easy to predict.

 

Much more difficult to predict, though, is when we humans will truly wake up to our true plight and begin making better decisions. And I’m not just talking about the coronavirus here. I’m talking about the dangerous levels of social inequity that the Federal Reserve is responsible for creating, both pre- and post-covid-19.

 

Given the enormous difficulty in getting whole swaths of the managerial and retail classes to grasp such simple and obvious logic as “Everyone should wear a mask!”, it seems thoroughly unrealistic to expect these same folks to thoughtfully tackle the hazards of runaway monetary and fiscal policy.

 

But they really need to.

 

Why?

 

Because the current monetary and fiscal trajectory society is on has been well-trod throughout history. We know where it ends — no place we want to be.

 

Commerce gets destroyed. Households fail. Government and social order fall apart. Fairness and freedoms are lost as it becomes difficult to distinguish between official policies and overt looting.

 

Real leaders know this history and would both think and act differently in order to avoid the worst risks. But managers? They just keep operating from the same manual, mindlessly repeating the same steps while hoping for a different result.

Why Social Distancing Should Not Be the New Normal

 

According to some, Bill Gates prominently among them, social distancing is part of “the new normal.” Alas, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest social distancing and lockdowns will not be necessary at all, and were probably a bad idea in the first place.

 

According to Nobel-prize-winning scientist Michael Levitt,1 the rate of SARS-CoV-2 mortality never experienced exponential growth, as was predicted, which suggests a majority of people may have had some sort of prior resistance or immunity.

 

Levitt, a professor of structural biology at the Stanford School of Medicine, received the Nobel Prize in 2013 for his development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems.

 

Statistical data, he points out, reveal a mathematical pattern that has stayed consistent regardless of the interventions implemented. As reported by Freddie Sayers in the video above:

 

“After around a two-week exponential growth of cases (and, subsequently, deaths) some kind of break kicks in, and growth starts slowing down. The curve quickly becomes ‘sub-exponential.’ This may seem like a technical distinction, but its implications are profound.

 

The ‘unmitigated’ scenarios modelled by (among others) Imperial College, and which tilted governments across the world into drastic action, relied on a presumption of continued exponential growth — that with a consistent R number of significantly above 1 and a consistent death rate, very quickly the majority of the population would be infected and huge numbers of deaths would be recorded.

 

But Professor Levitt’s point is that that hasn’t actually happened anywhere, even in countries that have been relatively lax in their responses …

 

He believes that both some degree of prior immunity and large numbers of asymptomatic cases are important factors … He describes indiscriminate lockdown measures as ‘a huge mistake,’ and advocates a ‘smart lockdown’ policy, focused on … protecting elderly people.”

 

Now, evidence for prior resistance to SARS-CoV-2 is emerging, adding support to Levitt’s suspicions that the lack of exponential mortality growth may be due to the fact that a majority simply aren’t (and weren’t) susceptible to the disease in the first place.

 

"At this point, we can clearly see that an all-encompassing global totalitarian plan had been quietly put together, piece by piece, behind the scenes, only to be put into action once a pandemic — real or imagined — emerged. A key player in the coordination of this plan has been Bill Gates, who stands to profit in any number of ways, both from vaccines and technological rollouts."

 

… As noted by Sayers, this really throws the idea of social distancing being an unavoidable part of the post-COVID-19 “new normal” into question. What’s more, once sensible behaviors such as staying home when sick are entered into this model, the effect of lockdown efforts “literally goes away,” Friston says.

 

According to Friston, the reason why Sweden and the U.K., for example, have had very similar mortality rates despite vastly different government interventions (Sweden did not impose mandatory stay-at-home orders or business closures while the U.K. did), is because Swedes who felt sick stayed home anyway. This is common sense for most people, especially during an active pandemic.

 

When Sayer asks Friston to comment on Neil Ferguson’s now discredited Imperial College model4 that predicted the death of 2 million Americans and 500,000 Britons unless draconian lockdown and social distancing measures were implemented, he replied that Ferguson’s models were correct “under the qualification that the population they were talking about is much smaller than you might imagine.”

 

“In other words, Ferguson was right that around 80% of susceptible people would rapidly become infected, and … that of those between 0.5% and 1% would die — he just missed the fact that the relevant ‘susceptible population’ was only ever a small portion of people …” Sayer writes.

Marriage, families, kids and home need to come first to make healthy children and hence, a society work properly.

Michigan police have finally announced criminal charges against the suspect who brutally attacked a Macy's store manager.

 

On Friday afternoon, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced he has charged 18-year-old Damire Palmer with "assault to do great bodily harm less than murder," WJRT-TV reported.

 

The crime is a felony and carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

 

In a viral video, Palmer is allegedly seen brutally beating a Macy's store manager in Flint. Palmer's brother, who filmed the attack, later claimed the victim called his brother the N-word, which provoked the attack. However, Macy's debunked the claim after investigating the June 15 incident, explaining the attack was completely "unprovoked."

 

Police have been searching for the brothers for more than a week, but they have yet to locate them.

 

At a press conference, Leyton confirmed the attack was unprovoked.

Radical Feminist Who Argued for the Extermination of Men Glorified in the 'NY Times'

 

The New York Times has been running a series of “obituaries” of “Overlooked” people who were not given an obit in the newspaper at the time of their death. They include people of color, feminists, queers, gays — anyone that the Times thinks now should have had an obit when they passed.

 

Of course, this leads to some rather interesting choices.

 

Kate Worley — a “pioneering” writer of erotic comics.

 

FN Souza — India’s anti-establishment writer

 

Roberta Cowell — trans trailblazer, pilot, and auto racer

 

And other minor historical figures.

 

But today’s installment of “Overlooked” is a doozy. Valerie Solanas was a writer, of sorts, whose main claim to fame is that she put a bullet in Andy Warhol in 1968. She apparently thought that Warhol and his friend, French publisher Maurice Girodias, were conspiring against her so she walked into Warhol’s New York apartment and shot him.

 

Warhol survived and Solanas ended up in a mental institution for a few months. But as a radical feminist, her obscure, nonsensical writing somehow survives.

 

It is her book Scum Manifestor that still receives attention today. It’s a threatening rant against all men, where she proposes exterminating all males.

 

That and her play, Up Your A**, are celebrated by feminists for their radicalism and anti-male sentiments.

 

The manifesto, self-published in 1967, reads as satire, though Solanas defended it as serious. Its opening line is at once absurd and a call to arms for the coalition she was forming, the Society for Cutting Up Men:

 

Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore and no aspect of society being at all relevant to women, there remains to civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females only to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex.

 

On the subject of reproduction, she wrote: “We should produce only whole, complete beings, not physical defects or deficiencies, including emotional deficiencies, such as maleness.”

 

Satire? You decide.

 

In it, the author, Breanne Fahs, writes about an exchange between Solanas and her friend Jeremiah Newton. Newton asked Solanas if her manifesto was to be taken literally. “I don’t want to kill all men,” she replied. But, using an expletive, she added: “I think males should be neutered or castrated so they can’t mess up any more women’s lives.”

 

I would say “man-hater” would be a mild descriptive.

 

Feminists themselves are quoted throughout the obit approving of Solanas for her “revolutionary” ideas.

 

“I keep thinking what a shame it is that she’s mad, utterly mad,” Ultra Violet wrote in her 1988 memoir, “Famous for 15 Minutes: My Years With Andy Warhol.” “For in the beginning, beyond her overheated rhetoric, she had a truly revolutionary vision of a better world run by and for the benefit of women.”

 

Her attack on Warhol was controversial with feminists, as some defended her actions.

 

Her attack on Warhol fractured mainstream feminist groups, including the National Organization for Women, whose members were split on whether to defend or condemn her. Those who defended her, including the writer Ti-Grace Atkinson and the lawyer Flo Kennedy, formed the bedrock of radical feminism and presented Solanas as a symbol of female rage. The shooting became wrapped up in a larger narrative on gun violence when Senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot the next day.

 

They aren’t called “radical” for nothing.

 

The author of the obit, Bonnie Wertheim, writes approvingly of Solanas’s dysfunctional worldview.

 

The text distilled the anger and yearning that Solanas had exhibited throughout her life. In college, as a recently-out lesbian, she rallied against the idea that educated women should be defined as wives and mothers, even as she acknowledged that, in a society ruled by men, such fates were probably inevitable. Her ideas about gender and power calcified in the early 1960s, when she hitchhiked across the country and back again. She arrived in New York City in 1962 with the start of a play she was writing and several versions of “SCUM Manifesto.”

 

Whatever Solanas truly believed about the ultimate fate of men in her Brave New World, she wasn’t interested in including them in any meaningful way as true and equal partners with women. It was she who was beyond redemption, not men. She and other feminists never learned reason or logic. They totally escaped Solanas, who was probably suffering from some mental illness in addition to holding radical views.

Many of the executives who were paid six figures at the Biden Cancer Initiative previously worked for the Obama administration's "Cancer Moonshot" program, that was created to "accelerate cancer research" and "aims to make more therapies available to more patients, while also improving our ability to prevent cancer and detect it at an early stage."

 

The report questions if the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee's organization "allowed associates to profit off their access to him."

 

The organization's mission was to "develop and drive implementation of solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, research, and care, and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes."

 

Biden and his wife Jill left the organization's board in April 2019 to avoid a conflict of interest as he prepared to launch his presidential campaign. The Biden Cancer Initiative suddenly shuttered on July 11, 2019.

 

"Today, we are suspending activities given our unique circumstances. We remain personally committed to the cause, but at this time will have to pause efforts," Greg Simon, president of the Biden Cancer Initiative, said. What channel is that “Lynching Show” on? I don’t recall seeing it in the TV Guide.

 

“Centuries of institutionalized oppression will not be undone overnight, for racism in America is as structural as the marble pillars of this very institution,” the Democrat added. “With the power of the pen we must legislate accountability, dismantle these systems, and move in the direction of justice and healing. The Justice in Policing Act is a critical step forward, and I applaud the leadership of the Congressional Black Caucus.”

 

And if we could agree on the systems that need to be dismantled, that would be a step forward. Except the “structural” racism of which she speaks was legislatively and constitutionally undone decades ago. Before the law, blacks are as “equal” as they’re going to get.

 

The law is not the problem. Where there are racial insensitivity and ignorance, there is inequality. That is a cultural shortcoming and nothing that can be fixed legislatively — unless Presley wants to go all North Korean on us and force us to think a certain way. Racist acts are already punishable under the law.

 

What Pressley is demanding is not equality before the law but equality of outcomes.

It is odd that in our modern, scientific, logical society, we are wearing (and mandating) use of a mystical talisman against disease. In this, we are no better than our barefoot ancestors in mud huts carving wooden charms.

UK university test COVID-19 vaccine derived from aborted fetal cell line in Africa, Brazil

The University of Oxford in the UK is conducting a large-scale trial of a COVID-19 vaccine in South Africa, Brazil, and Britain that was made from a fetal cell line harvested from an aborted baby decades ago.

 

Starting this past Wednesday, approximately 2000 volunteers in South Africa ranging in age from 18 to 65 began to receive the trial vaccine known commercially as AZD1222, which was developed by the University of Oxford’s Oxford Jenner Institute.

 

The technical name of AZD1222 is ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, and it is made from a common cold virus called ChAdOx1. It is also a “replication-deficient adenovirus type vaccine” which uses the HEK-293 cell line made from fetal cells harvested from an aborted baby decades ago.

 

Oxford University scientists worked with AstraZeneca, who has the license to produce AZD1222, on the development and production of the vaccine. In addition to being tested in South Africa, the vaccine is already in trials in the United Kingdom and Brazil.

 

Alan Moy, M.D., founder and scientific director of the John Paul II Medical Research Institute and CEO of Cellular Engineering Technologies, told LifeSiteNews that vaccines which use the fetal cell line HEK293, such as the Canadian Ad5-nCoV coronavirus vaccine and AZD1222, are “not a good vaccine solution if pro-life or pro-choice.”

 

When asked about AZD1222, Moy confirmed for LifeSiteNews that the vaccine does indeed use an unethical cell line.

LifeSiteNews reported in May that the Canadian government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau teamed up with a Chinese vaccine company to test Ad5-nCoV in Canada.

 

Ad5-nCoV uses the aborted fetal cell line HEK293, which is licensed from Canada’s National Research Council (NRC). In May, Health Canada approved human trial testing of Ad5-nCoV.

 

The clinical trial of AZD1222 was announced via a “virtual press conference” Tuesday, which was hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, who is collaborating with the University of Oxford on the trial.

 

The South African “Ox1Cov-19 Vaccine VIDA-Trial” is being led by Shabir Madhi, who serves as Professor of Vaccinology at Wits University and Director of the South Africa Medical Research Council Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit.

 

In Wednesday’s announcement, Madhi called it a “landmark moment for South Africa and Africa at this stage of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

 

“As we enter winter in South Africa and pressure increases on public hospitals, now more than ever we need a vaccine to prevent infection by Covid-19,” Madhi said in the virtual press conference.

I have just witnessed one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen. Oh.. And there is sauce.

 

I went to watch a show that I like on the Daystar Christian Network, only to find that their annual telethon is running and the show has been pre-empted.

 

What was on in its place is Jesse Duplantis ranting at the camera in a live studio with the telethon numbers below him on the screen. No idea what he was saying as I had it on mute. Don't need to hear it anyway.

 

Now, TV preachers begging for money wearing better suits and more bling than most can afford is nothing new. But the chyron crawl absolutely made we want to punch my TV.

 

About every few minutes the following message would pop up above the donation telephone number.

 

"If you want to experience the "anointing of financial increase" that is on Jesse Duplantis, use your faith and pledge a one time gift of $1,200 or $100 a month for 12 months and believe God for a 30,60 or 100 fold blessing!" Call now or go online…"

 

My jaw hit the floor when I saw the dollar amount: $1200. There are a ton of numbers to pull out of the thin air. But these scumbags picked a number that just so happens to be the exact same amount as the individual amount of the economic impact payment!

 

I saw through this immediately. They are asking people to send in their stimulus checks. What!? I won't go into the whole thing of sending money to a network in the name of a man hoping for an increase of your situation rather than sowing on your own in the name of God.

I was at Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, NY on May, 23rd, and just last weekend. A lot of people, no masks, no social distancing, and local law enforcement wasn't enforcing. US House of Representatives Committee Proposes $3.8 Billion to Fund Anti-Russia Measures in 2021

 

The United States House of Representatives Armed Services Committee has proposed allocating $3.8 billion to fund anti-Russia measures in the 2021 fiscal year, according to the committee's National Defence Authorization Act proposal.

 

"The proposal provides an additional $3.789 billion for strategic sealift, satellite communications, refueling, submarine, and antisubmarine warfare capabilities that enhance deterrence against Russia", the document read.

 

Additionally, officials in Washington are pushing to limit any military cooperation between the US and Russia, although exceptions will be made for the purposes of building dialogue that will reduce the risk of conflict, according to the document.

 

The committee is also looking to fully fund the European Defence Initiative and provide $250 million to the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. One-fifth of these funds can be used to purchase lethal weapons, the committee said.

 

The proposal, which was tabled by Chairman Adam Smith, would authorize roughly $730 billion in spending for the purposes of national defence.

 

In December, President Donald Trump approved the 2020 National Defence Authorization Act, which had a topline budget of $738 billion.

What is known:

 

The handset doesn't need a sim installed to collect data.

The handset doesn't need wifi connectivity to collect data either.

Data is collected even with airplane mode on.

All offline data collected is sent to Google once a connection is established if Google has been granted permission to do so.

 

Steps to deny permissions to Google's spying:

 

Exit all of your apps and reboot the phone. Once the phone is to the home screen:

 

Go to Settings Apps & Notifications > see all apps → Google app info page.

Go to the app storage page.

Clear app cache and storage.

Stop the app process.

Go to the app permissions page.

Turn off all permissions listed on the permissions page.

Go back to the app info page.

Disable Google app.

 

Go to Settings Apps & Notifications > see all apps → Google Play Store app info page.

Go to the app permissions page.

Turn off all permissions listed on the permissions page.

 

Go to Settings Apps & Notifications > see all apps → Google Play services info page

While YouTube has tried to root out the conspiracy theory about a Democratic child sex dungeon in a Washington pizzeria by attaching a warning to those searching for the topic on its site, there’s a surprising place where Pizzagate is booming. Nearly four years after it began, the conspiracy theory is popping up all over the place on the short-form video app and Gen Z hangout spot TikTok.

 

Pizzagate has become massive on TikTok, reaching plenty of young people right as the reality around them—thanks to the pandemic, police violence and related unrest, and a new Netflix documentary highlighting Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes—seems more and more unhinged. The #Pizzagate hashtag has earned more than 69 million views on the platform, while related hashtags have earned several millions more.

Take a TikTok video posted at the beginning of June. It looks like so many others: a teenager sitting in her room, while a pop song plays behind her. Rather than being about problems in school, relationships, or mainstream politics, though, this teenager is convinced that Hillary Clinton and former Clinton campaign chief John Podesta are eating children in the basement of a D.C. pizzeria.

 

“Search up the #pizzagate and read it all,” her texts on the screen flash. “If I die from this just know it was not an accident or suicide”

The resurgence comes even as original Pizzagate promoters like Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec flee from their associations with the conspiracy theory after it inspired an arson attack and a shooting at the restaurant. And it appears to be far more widespread than when it first began spreading in 2016. Indeed, it’s hard to overstate how huge Pizzagate is on TikTok, particularly amongst teenagers who don’t otherwise fit a right-wing conspiracy theorist mold. I watched hours of posts on the hashtag, and many of the young people promoting it are otherwise just interested in viral dances and Black Lives Matters.

 

Many of the biggest Pizzagate videos come from @_Kirie, a British teenager who regularly reaches nearly 1 million views each with each video claiming that Comet Ping Pong is the center of a pedophile ring. He didn’t respond to a request for comment. Typically, his videos are a screenshot of a ludicrous Twitter post promoting Pizzagate, with an encouragement for his followers to spread the conspiracy theory.

 

Another account with more than 150,000 followers, which normally posts dance moves about historic events, declared that “2020 is the year of the pedobusters.” In another video, the person behind the account posed as Edgar Maddison Welch, the unhinged Pizzagate conspiracist who, in 2016, opened fire inside the restaurant (fortunately, no one was hurt).

 

“There’s way too much that adds up in that case,” the caption reads.

 

Much of the latest interest among TikTok users appears to have been fueled by bogus viral tweets claiming that Hillary Clinton is currently on trial for being a pedophile. In reality, she’s fighting a mundane court case over her private email server with Trump ally Tom Fitton and his group, Judicial Watch. Nevertheless, videos that each receive nearly 100,000 views claim that Clinton is secretly on trial for running a child sex dungeon.

 

“I don’t know why no one’s talking about this,” said one TikToker in a video this week.

 

Other videos claim that Justin Bieber’s song “Yummy”, released in January, is secretly about Pizzagate. Monash University professor Mark Andrejevic, who has studied conspiracy theories on TikTok, says the app’s format is ripe for promoting them.

 

This just makes me depressed. And a little bit nervous. These kids don’t know the history or the dynamics of our ugly politics of the last few decades. They’re just seeing something and believing it because someone passed it on to them. They know the technology but they don’t know the context or the subtext. In some ways, they are like the elderly who get a chain letter or a Facebook post from someone they trust and believe what it says.

 

It’s worrying.

Is TikTok 2020’s New Propaganda Playground?

 

TikTok has features to keep the hate-mongers and the disinformation-peddlers out. They may not be enough.

The warning sounded dire: Sex traffickers were placing zip ties on cars of people they hoped to kidnap. Within days of the claim appearing in a TikTok video, the post had racked up more than 700,000 likes, many of them from scared teens. Every one of them was playing into a hoax: The zip-tie scare was a previously debunked rumor that found new life on the video-sharing app.

 

2016 was the year hoaxes like the Pizzagate conspiracy theory took over Facebook and Twitter. Since then, a new social media powerhouse has emerged: TikTok, a video app with 1.5 billion global users. With the 2020 election looming, TikTok is about to face its own disinformation reckoning.

While some of the platform’s design makes it hard for some hoaxes to spread, researchers say, the app’s structure and opaque moderation system can warp users’ ideas of the news, spreading half-truths or keeping some topics out of the public eye altogether.

 

Even if the worst happens, it won’t look quite like 2016, when the Pizzagate conspiracy theory racked up countless shares across mainstream social media. Followers of the right-wing hoax falsely claimed that Hillary Clinton was involved in a child sex-trafficking ring based out of a D.C. pizzeria. And platforms like Facebook and Twitter made it easy for users to repost each others’ bizarre claims.

 

That exact scenario couldn’t happen on TikTok.

 

Unlike Facebook and Twitter, which allow users to share others’ posts, TikTok has no equivalent of a “retweet” button. Instead it requires users to make their own, original posts. That means every user’s profile is a collection of their own work—and it creates a natural barrier to some kinds of disinformation, said Cristina López G., a senior research analyst at the nonprofit Data & Society.

 

“Within the platform, that reduces reach,” López said. TikTok allows users to riff on each others’ videos by borrowing their audio or making “duets” (split-screen videos that show the original video alongside the new clip). López described the format as a “yes, and…” structure. If users want to amplify a message, they need to add their own voice, making it harder for anonymous trolls or bot armies to spread disinformation as quickly and efficiently as they can on Twitter.

 

So far, the audio-focused sharing has been harder to weaponize than text-based posts.

 

“The main building block for content on TikTok is sound. That poses some challenges for disinformation, making it less compelling,” López said. “I’m not trying to claim there isn’t any disinfo on TikTok or that it will remain impervious to it: if you type ‘epstein’ or ‘qanon’ on the search bar you’ll see that there is… some. But you’ll see that the sound meme is a challenge for producers of disinfo who are trying to create content in the same way they do elsewhere—their content doesn’t seem to go very far because of that.”

TikTok did not return a request for comment.

 

But TikTok’s closed nature could also make it more susceptible to hoaxes because content on the platform doesn’t link out to other sources, according to disinformation expert Cameron Hickey.

 

“Everything you’re experiencing, you experience inside the platform,” Hickey said. “In TikTok, in a sense, you’re locked inside.”

 

Other platforms have consciously tried to crack down on disinformation by limiting users’ ability to share posts. In response to social media-fueled killings in India, the Facebook-owned message service WhatsApp limited its sharing feature earlier this year. Previously, users could forward a message 20 times. Now they’re capped at five, in a bid to fight “misinformation and rumors.”

 

TikTok also has its own content moderation system. And like those of Facebook and Twitter, that moderation system comes with its own thorny ethical questions.

 

Some extreme keywords appear to be banned in TikTok searches. A search for Atomwaffen, a murderous white supremacist group, yields no results, but a warning that “this phrase may be associated with hateful behavior.” It’s unclear when TikTok rolled out the policy. A 2018 Vice investigation found pro-Atomwaffen material, although some hashtags associated with the group still yield search results. Similarly, “Hitler” surfaces no TikToks (and weirdly, no content warning) but “Honkler” a pointless-to-explain Nazi meme about clowns still turns up videos.

In November, a whistleblower told the German publication Netzpolitik that TikTok limits the reach of some videos by secretly labeling them as “visible to self,” (only the uploader can see the video) “not recommended” and “not for feed.” The latter two labels make it harder to discover a video via searches, or in TikTok’s powerful recommendation feed.

 

A leaked TikTok moderation guide from November included some common clauses (removing videos deemed to promote terrorism) as well as other, more controversial policies. Like YouTube, which tried to remove some conspiracy theories from its recommendations this year, TikTok has a policy against “conspiracy theories that put the public safety at risk, or that egregiously lack a factual basis” in a way that “can introduce real world harm.” (It lists “anti-vaccine propaganda,” “Holocaust denial,” and “fake bomb scare pranks” as examples.) The videos are allowed, but should be labeled as “not for feed,” the guide said.

 

TikTok’s structure makes it less vulnerable to outright hoaxes than it is misleading uses of actual news, according to Hickey, although understanding disinformation on TikTok is harder because of a lack of data. Hickey points to a TikTok video suggesting that Barack Obama buying a $14 million house on Martha’s Vineyard is proof that global warming isn’t real as exactly the kind of misleading videos that can have success on the platform.

 

“There’s nothing literally false in this, but there’s definitely a misleading statement,” Hickey said.

 

TikTok users can sometimes be pushed into producing more political content in their quests for a larger audience. Hickey said he’s witnessed users who rack up only middling numbers when they produce typical TikTok fare, like participating in viral dance crazes, only to see stratospheric engagement when they make a video playing on the “Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself” meme.

 

Other TikTok policies pose further questions about the platform’s power over political speech. Videos “depicting controversial events” and “content that may lead to wider social division” including footage of political protests should be labeled “not for feed,” according to the leaked document. Those policies often line up squarely with the Chinese government’s interests. In September, amid suspicion that China-based company was hiding footage of mass protests in Hong Kong, TikTok was also revealed to be censoring videos about the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, the Tibetan independence movement, and religious groups banned in China.

 

And sometimes TikTok’s emphasis on music can be a boon to the far right. In India, Hindu nationalists have found a huge TikTok audience with songs encouraging the seizure of property in Kashmir and misogynistic treatment of Kashmiri women, Vice reported this summer.

 

The TikTok audience skews younger, meaning it could be a key place for people hoping to confuse or mislead young voters.

 

“This is a place where they’re likely to be forming their political beliefs,” Hickey said.

 

While far-right conspiracy theories do not appear as prominently on TikTok as on other platforms, the app has a thriving mainstream MAGA scene. For members of this community, TikTok’s insular nature can create a kind of conservative filter bubble, The New York Times noted in an article declaring “TrumpTok” a “safe space from safe spaces.”

 

Massive and growing, TikTok could be a motherlode for disinformation agents who want to influence the 2020 election. But any hoaxes they pull off will have to look different than the copy-paste conspiracy theories that swamped Facebook in 2016.

 

“It would be naive to say that bad actors won’t find vulnerabilities on TikTok to exploit,” López said, “but what seems to be happening for now is that disinfo in the shape and form we’ve seen it in other platforms simply flops on TikTok.”
