Dutch Police Arrest 6 People After Discovering Homemade Prison, Torture Chamber

Dutch police arrested six men after conducting a raid on sea containers that had been converted into a homemade prison and torture chamber complete with a dentist’s chair and tools, a high ranking police officer said Tuesday.

Authorities said police raided the makeshift prison and torture chamber before they could be used and informed potential victims, who then went into hiding, the Associated Press reported. Dutch national police officers reportedly arrested the six men June 22 on suspicion of kidnapping and assault.

The discovery was made last month after investigative officers decoded encrypted messages using the EncroChat secure communication tool, which police forces across Europe have already used to arrest hundreds of organized crime suspects, according to The Washington Post.

Using the code name 26Lemont, the police decrypted messages from an EncroChat phone that included pictures of the sea containers and the dentist’s chair, and referred to the makeshift prison as the “treatment room” and the “ebi,” a reference to Nieuw Vosseveld maximum-security prison, the Associated Press reported.

During the raid, a heavily-armed arrest team blasted down the doors of seven sea containers located in a warehouse in a small village near the border of Belgium called Wouwse Plantage, according to the Associated Press.

Andy Kraag, head of the country’s National Investigation Service, stated at a news conference last week that there were indications of a torture device, although the police did not disclose the full nature of the investigation, according to Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

In a police report Tuesday, Kragg stated that “six of the containers were intended as cells in which people could be tied up and one container was intended as a torture chamber.” He also praised the success of the 26Lemont investigation, the Associated Press reported.

A court in Amsterdam has ordered the six suspects to be detained for 90 days as investigations continue in the city of Rotterdam, which was a base of operations for the criminals according to the Associated Press.

Q - I hope you are able to help me and others like me. I got caught up in the great recession and became over leveraged on my rental properties. I ended up filing for Ch 11 bankruptcy in 2012 to stop losing everything I worked my whole life for. The bankruptcy was finally closed in 2019. I am in the middle of a refinance and my banker informs me I have a $800+ collection on my credit report. There is nothing on any of the credit reports I am able to see that shows this collection. After researching this for 2 days I finally tracked it down. Unbeknownst to me, opening up the administratively closed bankruptcy to discharge it for 1 day, I was charged an $800 fee for this. My lawyer didn’t inform me. That’s a hit on him. The worst part is the Treasury Dept used my address from 2012 to send out a letter saying I owed this money. When I moved 6 years ago, I updated my driver’s license. When I filed my taxes IRS had my new address. I also updated my 3 credit reports with my new address. I never received a letter indicating I owed money to the treasury dept. I also had no problem receiving monies from the stimulus. I have been slowly rebuilding my credit and finally had a very good FICO score only to have it now drop over 200 points because the dept of treasury couldn’t be bothered with sending a notice/invoice to my current address.

I am sick of seeing our corrupt laws benefit the rich. The treasury dept SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DESTROY MY CREDIT WITHOUT DUE FREAKIN DILIGENCE IN ENSURING THEY SENT THE NOTICE TO MY UPDATED ADDRESS!

I ask you update the federal law to ensure this doesn’t happen to ANYONE EVER AGAIN.

Brazil's Bolsonaro tests positive for Covid-19

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has revealed he has tested positive for the coronavirus. Bolsonaro, who has been criticized for downplaying the virus, was tested on Monday after developing symptoms including a fever.

The reported outbreak of bubonic plague in Mongolia and China is not considered to pose a high risk, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said, adding that it is closely monitoring the situation.

The disease, notorious for devastating large parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia throughout history, has been recently detected in Mongolia and has possibly spread into neighboring China. The outbreak has so far been “well managed,” a WHO spokesperson told journalists on Tuesday.

“We are monitoring the outbreaks in China, we are watching that closely and in partnership with the Chinese authorities and Mongolian authorities,” Margaret Harris said during a press briefing in Geneva.

At the moment we are not… considering it high-risk but we are watching it, monitoring it carefully.

Known as the ‘Black Death’ in Europe in the Middle Ages, the highly contagious bacterial disease has claimed tens of millions of lives throughout history and is responsible for at least three pandemics, the latest one in the 19th century.

Effective antibiotics and knowledge of how epidemics work turned it from a force of nature that could topple civilizations into a dangerous yet manageable infection.

Mongolia detected an outbreak last week after two people in the Khovd region tested positive for the disease, apparently after eating marmots, rodents that serve as natural reservoirs for the bacteria.

China identified a suspected single case of the disease in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

At least 21 killed, 15 injured as bus filled with school children veers off road, crashes into reservoir in China

At least 21 people have died and 15 have been left seriously injured after a bus carrying high school students veered off a road, broke through a guardrail and sank into a reservoir in southwest China.

The horrific incident happened at approximately noon local time in Anshun, in southwest China's Guizhou Province. The exact number of passengers on board, believed to be mostly high school students sitting their college entrance exams, is not yet confirmed.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear but CCTV footage of the incident shows the bus in which the students were travelling veering violently across multiple lanes of traffic.

The Emergency Management Department of Guizhou Province said some 141 firefighters including 19 divers were dispatched to the scene. So far, 15 people have been taken from the Hongshan Reservoir and taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Ghislaine Maxwell Goes From Posh Hideout To COVID-Stricken 'Third World Country' NY Jail

For the first time in her privileged life, ex-socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is living in conditions described by one judge in 2016 as similar to a 'prison on Turkey or a Third World Country.'

The 58-year-old Maxwell was arrested after hiding out in a lavish four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion in New Hampshire, which Bloomberg notes sports views of the Mount Sunapee foothills from every room.

After being initially booked in New Hampshire on multiple charges related to trafficking underage girls for the sexual gratification of dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell was transferred on Monday to New York's Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) - home to over 1,600 male and female detainees which was built at the turn of the 20th century and used during both world wars, according to Bloomberg.

No one wants to go to jail, but the conditions described at the MDC have been the subject of numerous complaints and scrutiny that rival the rat-infested federal lockup in Lower Manhattan where Epstein was held.

In early 2019, hundreds of inmates at the MDC were locked shivering in their cells for at least a week after an electrical fire knocked out power in the building. The inmates spent some of the coldest days of that winter in darkness, largely without heat and hot water. -Bloomberg

One inmate, Derrilyn Needham, has been incarcerated at MDC since last November along with 30 other women who slept in bunk beds. Needham said social distancing was difficult, and that for three days starting April 23, the women were on "lockdown on our bunk beds, not able to leave our bunks except to use the bathroom or shower.

She added that they hadn't been given gloves, hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes - and that despite symptoms of COVID-19, the assistant warden said she couldn't receive a test for the virus.

According to The Intercept, "The number of reported coronavirus symptoms far exceeds the number of tests MDC has performed." In May, the facility came under fire for allegedly destroying medical records "as part of a deliberate effort to obscure the number of incarcerated people infected with the coronavirus."

The report, filed Thursday as part of a putative class-action lawsuit by people held in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, casts doubt on assertions by the Bureau of Prisons, which runs the jail, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District, which serves as counsel for the bureau. The Bureau of Prisons and federal prosecutors have insisted in court that the situation at the jail is under control. Lucian K Truscott IV penned an opinion piece published Monday in The New York Times in which he noted that while Jefferson’s motto was “all men are created equal,” he “never did much to make those words come true.”

“The memorial is a shrine to a man who during his lifetime owned more than 600 slaves and had at least six children with one of them, Sally Hemings,” Truscott wrote. “Upon his death, he did not free the people he enslaved, other than those in the Hemings family, some of whom were his own children. He sold everyone else to pay off his debts.”

In fact, some of his white descendants, including his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph, my great-great-great-great grandfather, fought in the Civil War in defense of slavery. My great-grandmother lived with him at Edgehill after she was born there in 1866. That is how close we are not only to Jefferson but also to slavery. When we visited her as children, there was only one dead man between my brother and me and Thomas Jefferson.

I am the sixth-generation great-grandson of a slave owner. My cousins from the Sally Hemings family are also the great-grandchildren of a slave owner. But the difference is that our great-grandfather owned their great-grandmother. My family owned their family. That is the American history you will not learn when you visit the Jefferson Memorial. But you will learn it when you visit Monticello: There’s now an exhibit of Sally Hemings’s bedroom in her cavelike living quarters in the south wing, a room my brother and I used to play in when we were boys.

Truscott went on to say that “That is the American history you will not learn when you visit the Jefferson Memorial. But you will learn it when you visit Monticello.”

“At Monticello, you will learn the history of Jefferson, the man who was president and wrote the Declaration of Independence, and you will learn the history of Jefferson, the slave owner. Monticello is an almost perfect memorial because it reveals him with his moral failings in full, an imperfect man, a flawed founder,” he wrote.

That’s why we don’t need the Jefferson Memorial to celebrate him. He should not be honored with a bronze statue 19 feet tall, surrounded by a colonnade of white marble. The time to honor the slave-owning founders of our imperfect union is past. The ground, which should have moved long ago, has at last shifted beneath us.

And it’s time to honor one of our founding mothers, a woman who fought as an escaped slave to free those still enslaved, who fought as an armed scout for the Union Army against the Confederacy — a woman who helped to bring into being a more perfect union after slavery, a process that continues to this day. In Jefferson’s place, there should be another statue. It should be of Harriet Tubman.

To see a 19-foot-tall bronze statue of a Black woman, who was a slave and also a patriot, in place of a white man who enslaved hundreds of men and women is not erasing history. It’s telling the real history of America.

Former UK lawmaker Eric Joyce pleads guilty to making ‘indecent image’ of children as young as 12 MONTHS

Eric Joyce, a former shadow minister for the UK Labour Party, has pleaded guilty to a making an indecent image of children. The disgraced politician was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register and now faces prison time.

The former MP appeared in court on Tuesday and admitted making an indecent photograph in the form of a 51-second video. The clip “depicts a number of children,” Judge Emma Peters revealed.

“Some are quite young, one is said to be 12 months old – clearly a Category A movie,” she said.

Category A is the most severe class of indecent imagery, and can include penetrative sex, sadism, and sex with animals. Producing such material is punishable with imprisonment. The court stressed that it “takes such incidents very seriously” since they “fuel the abuse of children.”

According to the judge, the video was made at some point between 2013 and 2018, and Joyce claims that “he accessed it via an email which he says was a spam email.”

“At the time he was drinking heavily and he has now undergone work with the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and a psychotherapist,” the judge added.

The case against Joyce has been running since late 2018, when he was charged under the Protection of Children Act. It's the latest scandal in the turbulent career of the former army major turned politician.

Joyce served as MP for Falkirk in Scotland from 2000 to 2015. For the first 12 years, he was with Labour, before switching to being an independent for his final three. During his time in parliament, Joyce was involved in several incidents, including a pub brawl with four fellow politicians in Westminster. He was also convicted of drunk driving and abusing airport workers on several occasions.

UK resumes arms sales to Saudi Arabia, says ‘possible’ war crimes in Yemen are ‘isolated incidents’

The UK government has come under fire after announcing that it is to recommence arms sales to Saudi Arabia, despite acknowledging that the kingdom could be using them to commit war crimes in Yemen.

In a written statement published on Tuesday, International Trade Secretary Liz Truss confirmed that the UK will resume trading militarily with their key ally in the Gulf region. A landmark UK Court of Appeal ruling in June 2019 judged that arms sales to the kingdom were unlawful – prompting the government to suspend new arms sales while it conducted a review.

Truss said they had concluded that, while some “credible incidents of concern” had been recognized as “possible” breaches of international humanitarian law (IHL), the UK government saw these as “isolated incidents.”

The incidents which have been assessed to be possible violations of IHL occurred at different times, in different circumstances and for different reasons.

Explaining the decision further, Truss claimed that notwithstanding potential historic violations, Saudi Arabia had a “genuine intent” and “capacity to comply with IHL.”

The announcement left many aghast, coming just one day after Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab was mercilessly mocked online for introducing a new “global sanctions regime” which is intended to “target people that have committed the gravest human rights violations.”

This is reported by various well-entered sources of De Telegraaf. The national police unit does not want to say anything about the suspect's background. Van O. was part of a group that called itself the "alliance" and consisted of various criminal groups that formed a front against top criminal Ridouan Taghi, who was arrested early this year. One of the men from that alliance was Hamza Ziani (34) who was wound up in Spain in 2018.

Van O.'s gym building has been shot at several times in recent years. Van O., who was arrested last month, is associated with several violent crimes in the underworld. He was also heard by the police for the disappearance of criminal Churisan Allen from Utrecht. He did chores for the gym.

Kidnapping

Van O. and five other men are suspected of preparing for kidnapping, hostage taking, serious abuse, possession of weapons, extortion and participation in a criminal organization. According to the police, it is a drug organization. The lawyers for the suspects, including Van O.'s, have been approached by this newspaper, but do not want to comment.

It's sparked fears that the brutal turf wars that have plagued the area for years could be on the rise again, as Spain begins to lift lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Past attacks, most of which are sparked over drugs, have seen people gunned down in their own garages, 'kneecapped' and even given a 'Glasgow smile' - also known as a Chelsea smile - which sees victims cut from the corners of their mouth up to the ears.

And Radio DJ and freelance journalist Giles Brown, 52, who has lived just outside of Marbella for 30 years, says the latest attacks are a worrying echo of many before them.

“It’s the sign to me that things are getting back to normal in Marbella, in a bad way," he tells Sun Online.

"With the guy being shot the other day, and a stabbing on the coast on the day that people were allowed to go out for the first time, there was a bit more movement and so people start taking their revenge on each other.

“The shooting was a warning – if it wasn’t, he’d be dead."

According to statistics from Spain's Ministry of the Interior, there were 25 murders last year in the province of Malaga - along with 24 attempted murders - with the total number of crimes hitting 80,174, up from 79,225 the year before.

Brown adds: “There’s so much going on in Spain at the moment, and the police are trying their hardest, but they need to be able to throw more bodies at it."

Ridouan Taghi, 41, will face trial in the Netherlands amid a controversy over his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.

His criminal career began in the 1990s with cannabis and in 2000 he inherited a drug trafficking route from Morocco to the Netherlands, which allowed him to control a third of the cocaine trade in Europe, according to Dutch authorities.

The drugs arrived in container ships from South America to ports in Spain or Portugal, where the Taghi gang collected the merchandise for transportation to the Netherlands.

His network imported an average of 30 tons of cocaine annually through the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, and sold it across Europe, the largest market of cocaine worldwide.

In 2012, the theft of a cocaine stash from the Belgian port of Antwerp started a bloody war between rival drug gangs.

Taghi and his right-hand man Said Razzouki won with bullets, they are suspected in the murders of at least 20 people.

In 2013, Taghi allegedly killed his brother-in-law in Spain, after a disagreement over a shipment of drugs, although he has never been convicted of this, or of any of the other crimes attributed to his hitmen in Latin America and Morocco.

Dutch prosecutors have accused him of creating a “well-oiled murder organization.”

The gang was formed by a new generation of criminals and has sown fear in the Dutch underworld with the slogan “he who speaks, dies,” a Dutch investigator told Efe.

Taghi has been named as the main suspect in a string of murders and attempted murders in a case known as Marengo.

The key evidence in the case is the testimony of Nabil B, a protected witness who saw how the crimes were ordered.

Nabil’s brother and lawyer were both shot dead last year in an apparent attempt by the Taghi gang to silence him.

Taghi’s photograph and name had been on the lists of Europol, Interpol, and Netherlands police for years with a 100,000 euro reward for any information on his whereabouts.

He was finally arrested on Monday in Dubai, where he had traveled on a false passport and visa.

He had been living for years with a false identity on the luxurious Emirati Palm Jumeirah island in a large villa and paying the rent in cash.

Taghi was brought back to Holland on Thursday in a military plane without an extradition trial in the Emirates.

His lawyer Inez Weski said he was “kidnapped” by Dutch authorities from the Emirates and said he should not have been taken back “just because there is an extradition request, everyone has the right to a trial, but they simply put him on a plane, without access to a lawyer or judge.”

Dutch Minister of Justice and Security Ferdinand Grapperhaus rejected the accusations and said the transfer was made “according to the rule of law” and did not require an extradition request because Emirati authorities had declared him a persona non grata.

Taghi was transferred directly to Nieuw Vosseveld high security prison in Vught because of fears his men will try to organize his escape.

Doctors say experimental treatment may have rid man of HIV

A Brazilian man infected with the AIDS virus has shown no sign of it for more than a year since he stopped HIV medicines after an intense experimental drug therapy aimed at purging hidden, dormant virus from his body, doctors reported Tuesday.

The case needs independent verification and it’s way too soon to speculate about a possible cure, scientists cautioned.

“These are exciting findings but they’re very preliminary,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi, an AIDS specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. “This has happened to one person, and one person only,” and it didn’t succeed in four others given the same treatment, she said.

As Flynn goes over the edge, would Trump welcome him back?

If you missed it, MSNBC's Joy Reid aired footage from Flynn's oath "ceremony" yesterday, and it's as unsettling as you might imagine.

If you're unfamiliar with the crackpot QAnon conspiracy theory, Vox had an explainer a while back, which is as good as any summary. The basic idea is that Donald Trump is secretly at war with nefarious forces of evil, including Democrats, Hollywood celebrities, the "deep state," cannibals, and an underground ring of pedophiles that only adherents are aware of.

As we recently discussed, this isn't just the usual conspiratorial nonsense bubbling up from the right. It's vastly weirder and more radical. Last year, the FBI went so far as to classify QAnon as a domestic-terror threat in an internal memo.

And now Michael Flynn who served as the White House national security advisor in 2017, before he was forced to resign in disgrace has voluntarily posted a video of himself taking an oath in support of the bonkers theory, effectively declaring himself a “digital soldier” in support of the bizarre cause.

In comes on the heels of the retired general publishing this op-ed in which Flynn condemned "forces of evil" whom he believes are trying to "steal our freedom in the dark of night." New York's Jon Chait joked soon after that the op-ed was "difficult to evaluate without knowing whether Flynn’s objective was to advance a policy agenda or to help his legal team plant an insanity defense."

It led Mother Jones' Kevin Drum to raise a notable observation yesterday: "Apparently Flynn’s descent into madness, which started around 2014, is now complete. Thank God he’s nowhere near the levers of power at this point."

That certainly sounds about right. It's striking to see Flynn go over the edge, especially given the heights he'd once reached, and his descent says something notable about the state of far-right politics, but ultimately Flynn is a now private citizen and his embrace of ridiculous nonsense doesn't much matter.

Unless, that is, he moves back toward the levers of power.

In late April, Trump told reporters that he was open to bringing Flynn back. Asked specifically if he might invite Flynn into his administration, the president replied, "I would certainly consider it, yeah. I would. I think he’s a fine man."

Two weeks later, Vice President Mike Pence added that he, too, would be on board with bringing Flynn back into government.

Is this still the White House's opinion? If Trump is re-elected, should we expect to see Flynn in a new position of power? If so, it makes his latest strange antics that much more relevant.
