Before being elected Superior General, he worked primarily in Japan; he taught at Sophia University in Tokyo for twenty years and then headed educational institutions in Manila from 1978 to 1984 and in Tokyo from 1991 to 1993. He led the Jesuits in Japan from 1993 to 1996 and, after four years of pastoral work in Tokyo, led the Jesuits in Asia from 2004 to 2008.

Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health, sat down with HuffPost Live at Davos on Saturday and discussed the intersection of faith and science.

 

β€œFor me, somebody who is a β€˜show me the data’ kind of scientist, but also a believer [in God], I don’t see a discordance there,” Collins said. β€œIn fact it enriches my experience, each basically harmonized with the other. It gives you a view of life that is actually quite satisfying, and not in any way in conflict.”

 

When comparing science and faith, Collins said each can be applied to answer different questions, and if you mix the two together you get conflict.

 

β€œIt is certainly true in the United States that there is an uneasiness about certain aspects of science, particularly evolution, because it conflicts, in some people’s minds, with their sense of how we all came to be,” Collins said. β€œBut you know, if you are a believer in God, it’s hard to imagine that God would somehow put this incontrovertible evidence in front of us about our relationship to other living organisms and expect us to disbelieve it. I mean, that doesn’t make sense at all. So as soon as you kind of get over the anxiety about the whole thing, it actually adds to your sense of awe about this amazing universe that we live in, it doesn’t subtract from it at all.”

 

Collins also shared how technology can benefit health care.

 

β€œTechnology is driving much of the advances [in medicine],” Dr. Francis Collins said. β€œBut… if we’re interested in human health, we’ve got to be sure the technology doesn’t run away with itself.”

On August 7th, amid broad efforts to get Facebook to clamp down on extremist activity and hate speech, more than 120 organizations sent a letter to the social media giant, urging it to β€œfully adopt” the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism as the β€œcornerstone of Facebook’s hate speech policy regarding antisemitism.”

 

This definition, which was adopted by the IHRA in 2016 and has been promoted to governments worldwide, includes several examples of what it describes as β€œcontemporary” antisemitismβ€”including β€œdenying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor” and β€œapplying double standards” to Israelβ€”that can be interpreted to define much criticism of Israel, Israeli policies, or Zionism as antisemitism.

This letter represents the latest front in the battle to use the IHRA definition to officially exclude criticism of Israel from the bounds of acceptable discourse. It was spearheaded by pro-Israel attack dog StopAntisemitism.org, which is funded by hardline pro-Israel philanthropists Adam and Gila Milstein. The group is perhaps best known for publicly labeling critics of Israel, including some Jews, as antisemites.

 

[Editor’s note: Adam Milstein has dual citizenship with Israel and served in the Israeli military. In 2009 he was convicted for tax fraud. He has also funded propaganda against Congress member Ilhan Omar.]

 

So far, the list of signatories to the Facebook letter is a β€œwho’s who” of right-wing groups dedicated to defending Israel from criticism [see list below], many of which are also funded by or associated with the Milsteins; in The Jerusalem Post, a former Israeli Knesset member who is associated with one of the signatories credited the Milsteins’ foundation with initiating the campaign.

 

Their effort enjoys the public backing of the Israeli government: Israel’s new Minister of Strategic Affairs, Orit Farkash-Hacohen, told the Post, β€œI welcome the initiative and call on more bodies and organizations to join the clear demand for change.”

 

Yet, as attorney Kenneth Sternβ€”an expert on antisemitism who was the lead drafter on the text that became the IHRA definitionβ€”has repeatedly expressed, this definition and its examples were never intended to be used as a formalized, enforceable definition of antisemitism, and turning them into one has raised serious free speech concerns.

 

The American Civil Liberties Union described early efforts to codify the IHRA into law as β€œpart of a disturbing surge of government-led attempts to suppress the speech of people on only one side of the Israel-Palestine debate . . . on college campuses, in state contracts, and even in bills to change the federal law.”

 

If social media networks like Facebook adopt the Israel-related examples in the IHRA definition and allow these to guide their hate speech policies, it will likely lead to similar efforts to suppress free speech, this time in the online sphere.

 

So far, Facebook has responded to the letter by changing its policy regarding hate speech in ways it says take the IHRA definition into account, but it has resisted adopting the IHRA definition in its entirety. On August 11th, Facebook announced that it had updated its hate speech policy β€œto more specifically account for certain kinds of implicit hate speech, such as . . . stereotypes about Jewish people controlling the world.”

 

In a response sent to to the letter’s signatories, Monika Bickertβ€”Facebook’s vice president of content policyβ€”noted that the company had used the IHRA definition β€œin informing [its] own approach and definitions,” that its new policy β€œdraws on the spiritβ€”and the textβ€”of the IHRA,” and that under Facebook’s policy, β€œJews and Israelis are treated as β€˜protected characteristics.’”

 

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operations officer, also wrote to Adam Milstein personally, assuring him that the IHRA definition has been β€œinvaluable” to Facebook.

What we all have noticed is an increasing tilt towards anti-Semitism. There isn't one of us who's going to stop reading your blog (no one's dumb enough to cut off his nose), but it is noticeable (and disconcerting) that we do mention amongst ourselves from time to time.

Here is what should truly disconcert these disconcerted readers. Being an extreme outlier myself, I don't personally care even a little bit about an individual's ethnic heritage. I don't concern myself with my own ethnic identity or allow it to influence my analysis about anything, so imagine how much less I care about anyone else's. Macro is not micro, and the only thing I care about on the macro level is the truth. The objective, observable, and undeniable truth, however uncomfortable it might be for me or anyone else.

 

So, if you're going to reject the truth and call it anti-semitic, or any other pejorative term, a) that's your problem, not mine, and b) that doesn't change reality by one single atom or iota. Because the fact, the objective, observable, and undeniable fact, is that I am anti-satanic, anti-globalist, anti-imperialist, and anti-promethean. If that somehow leads you to believe that I am anti-semitic, then you should probably look very, very hard at where your logic is leading you and whom you are serving.

 

Anyhow, anti-semitism is merely one of the charges that have been hurled at me since I was getting death threats from CAIR back in 2001, and I've been on the ADL hate list since 2016. So, I sincerely hope you will excuse me continuing to not give a quantum of a fragment of a damn what anyone else happens to think one way or another.

Two or more sides disagree on who runs the country. And they can't settle the question through elections because they don't even agree that elections are how you decide who's in charge. That's the basic issue here Who decides who runs the country? When you hate each other but accept the election results, you have a country. When you stop accepting election results, you have a countdown to a civil war.

 

The Mueller investigation was about removing President Trump from office and overturning the results of an election. We all know that. But it's not the first time they've done this. The first time a Republican president was elected this century, they said he didn't really win. The Supreme Court gave him the election. There's a pattern here .

 

What do sure odds of the Democrats rejecting the next Republican president really mean? It means they don't accept the results of any election that they don't win. It means they don't believe that transfers of power in this country are determined by elections. That's a civil war.

 

There's no shooting. At least not unless you count the attempt to kill a bunch of Republicans at a charity baseball game practice. But the Democrats have rejected our system of government.

 

This isn't dissent. It's not disagreement. You can hate the other party. You can think they're the worst thing that ever happened to the country. But then you work harder to win the next election. When you consistently reject the results of elections that you don't win, what you want is a dictatorship.

 

Your very own dictatorship.

 

The only legitimate exercise of power in this country, according to Democrats, is its own. Whenever Republicans exercise power, it's inherently illegitimate. The Democrats lost Congress. They lost the White House. So what did they do? They began trying to run the country through Federal judges and bureaucrats. Every time that a Federal judge issues an order saying that the President of the United States can't scratch his own back without his say so, that's the civil war.

 

Our system of government is based on the constitution, but that's not the system that runs this country. The Democrat's system is that any part of government that it runs gets total and unlimited power over the country.

 

If the Democrats are in the White House, then the president can do anything And I mean anything. He can have his own amnesty for illegal aliens. He can fine you for not having health insurance. He can use the IRS as his own police force and imprison citizens who speak against him. He can provide guns and money (Fast and Furious) (Iran nuclear deal) to other countries to support his own agenda, and watch while one of America's Ambassador's is dragged through the streets and murdered doing nothing to aid our citizens. His power is unlimited. He's a dictator. But when Republicans get into the White House, suddenly the President can't do anything. He isn't even allowed to undo the illegal alien amnesty that his predecessor illegally invented. A Democrat in the White House has 'discretion' to completely decide every aspect of immigration policy. A Republican doesn't even have the 'discretion' to reverse him. That's how the game is played. That's how our country is run. Sad but true, although the left hasn't yet won that particular fight.

Adobe Lightroom Update Is Permanently Deleting Users' Photos on iOS

On Tuesday, Adobe apologized to users of its iOS Lightroom software after a recent update resulted in the permanent deletion of some presets and photos. The company says it’s issued a fix for the problem.

 

The bug was first flagged by PetaPixel on Thursday after it received complaints from readers about their photos disappearing. Numerous testimonials appeared on Adobe’s feedback forum describing the same situation. And Adobe soon confirmed that an update issued for Lightroom on iPhone and iPad was nuking irreplaceable photos and pricey professional presets for some users.

 

In a statement, Adobe wrote:

 

Some customers who updated to Lightroom 5.4.0 on iPhone and iPad may be missing photos and/or presets. This affected customers using Lightroom mobile without a subscription to the Adobe cloud. It also affected Lightroom cloud customers with photos and presets that had not yet synced to the Adobe cloud.

 

…

 

Installing version 5.4.1 will not restore missing photos or presets for customers affected by the problem introduced in 5.4.0.

 

Some customers affected by this issue might be able to use iPhone and iPad backups to recover photos and presets.

 

The company acknowledged that the loss of users’ digital property is upsetting and referred anyone with further questions to a forum FAQ.

State Sen. O’Ban announces bill to help combat Washington's nursing home crisis

 

TACOMA, Wash. β€” While Washington’s senior population is soaring, the number of nursing homes is on the decline.

Numbers from the Washington Health Care Association (WHCA) project that in 20 years, the number of people over the age of 65 in the state will climb from 16% of the population to 22% of the population.

 

Despite the trends, the number of nursing home facilities has dropped in recent years, nearly 10%, due largely to financial constraints related to a statewide Medicaid shortfall.

Jim Spiegler and his wife of 30 years, Betsy Delahunt, know firsthand what it’s like to have their nursing home shutter suddenly. A few months ago, they were displaced from Vashon Community Care Center on Vashon Island.

β€œThey told us the facility would have to be closed, and it was quite clear that it was financial,” said Spiegler.

β€œTo be told summarily that we were going to have to leave within six weeks…it’s profoundly disorienting,” Delahunt added.

Altogether, 19 skilled nursing facilities in Washington have closed since 2017, according to the WHCA.

β€œThe solution is very plain. We need to increase the Medicaid reimbursement rates," said State Senator Steve O’Ban.

O’Ban is sponsoring legislation that would increase the Medicaid reimbursement rate, based on up-to-date information from the most recent calendar year.

β€œMy bill will create a new system for establishing state payments to nursing homes,” he said. β€œIt will simplify that payment structure. It will reward nursing homes that are providing care for high acuity patients.”

O’Ban pointed out that Washington pays $216 per-patient per-day in Medicaid reimbursements to skilled nursing facilities.

By contrast, Oregon pays $326 per-patient per-day, and Idaho pays $266.

His proposed bill has the backing of the AARP and the state’s Long Term Care Ombudsman Program.

Posting this to see if I can get actual debate…

Many anons cheer when Uber/Lyft get slammed because they serve the interests of the deep state.

But I think there are deeper issue here that get ignored.

Obviously, Vox Day is right when he says that the "gig economy" de facto lowers the price of labor. And I agree that that is in fact a bad thing.

But what he ignores, and what many ignore, is that SALARIED EMPLOYMENT increases personal dependence on employers. This takes MANY forms, perhaps the deepest being "health insurance" which for no logical reason is tied to employment for most Americans. But also and more obviously, the ability to engage on social and political issues is in fact HIGHLY tied to one's "employment status". Among anons who post regularly here, I suppose most either have NO salaried employment, or they take GREAT PAINS to hide their real work here from their employers.

I think the GIG ECONOMY is actually a GREAT thing, if done rightly. It spurs a spirit of creativity and exporation, and it reinforces the connection between actual WORK and recompense, as opposed to reinforcing the connection between CONFORMITY and recompense.

Just a couple of observations from my "mandatory mask" liberal midwest city. By overstepping legitimate authority, my city's council has risked losing all respect for rules in this community. Would you believe even the city parks have signs telling people which direction to walk so they don't end up facing someone else?

 

However, I see signs of anger and rejection for the "nanny state" rules. The "rules" are getting broken and ignored, even maybe ones that previously seemed to have been followed. Saw evidence of a pretty good sized fire in a public park, for one. Tire tracks and damaged sign (like it had been run into by a vehicle) in a another.

 

For me, the mask mandate was the red line. Up until that point I ignored, suppressed, dismissed the years of liberal social engineering, anti-Christian persecution and bias (don't expect to get hired in some roles here if you admit you are Christian or conservative), and politics by Democrat "machine".

 

Not any more. With few exceptions, I don't spend money in this town any more. I won't stay here if Democrats remain in power.

 

There is one group which it has seemingly always been okay to persecute in this world: Conservative Christians.

California wildfire burn area now larger than state of Rhode Island

An astonishing 771,000 acres have burned in California since a rash of thunderstorms sparked hundreds of fires across the state less than a week ago, Cal Fire officials said Friday.

The burn area combined is larger than the state of Rhode Island.

"We simply haven’t seen anything like this in many years," California Gov. Gavin Newsom said at a press briefing with Cal Fire.

The number of total fires has grown from 376 on Wednesday to 560 on Friday. Of those, 20 to 25 are massive, threatening communities. These fires were sparked by more than 12,000 lightning strikes that struck amid a heat wave, delivering a dangerous mix of triple-digit temperatures and monsoonal conditions, Cal Fire spokesperon Jeremy Rahn said. Inside intelligence shows Chinese government wants Joe Biden to become the President of the United States because they would prefer to work with him, former Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell told Newsmax TV.

 

"Nancy Pelosi should care a lot more about what the Chinese are doing, especially to members of Congress," Grenell told Friday's "The Chris Salcedo Show." "This is very important. She knows this, and yet she hasn't done a very good job of digging deep into what the Chinese want.

"This has been largely ignored by the Washington, D.C. media," Grenell told host Chris Salcedo." You have to ask yourself, 'why do they continue pushing against Russian propaganda, pretending that it's Russian election interference, instead of calling it Russian propaganda, which it is – and are ignoring what the Chinese have been doing.

Alleycat Player - why aren't you using it?

 

I've been reluctant to write up something like this because I don't want to be called an "attention whore" or a "nigger" (whatever that means to you). Believe me, I do not want attention. I have a board on 8kun and I am not interested in having my little piece of heaven pissed on by shit disturbers (which I am risking right now). I just want to offer the world something valuable but, so far, my offer has been falling on deaf ears.

 

Alleycat Player is a tool for viewing and saving videos from multiple websites. The list of supported sites is too long to post here. Sure, it doesn't come close to what a tool like youtube-dl supports (when it works) but the major sites are there. People often ask about how to save Youtube videos and they invariably get pointed to some website that offers a download service. Is that the best that we can do? Are there no freely available (and user-friendly) tools that one can use on one's own computer? That's Alleycat Player but everyone ignores it.

 

I have posted about this tool many times on /qresearch/ and my posts have been Notabled three times but, still, there are few takers. Are you afraid of the Node.js requirement? Nervous about running a proxy server on your computer? I have no idea because nobody wants to give me feedback. Alleycat Player is safe and reliable. You can read the source code yourself, if you care to. It is hand-coded Javascript. You can easily modify it with just a text editor. It is yours to do with what you will. That is freedom but you willingly give up your freedom by relying on websites which you do not control. Why is that?

 

I ask you to think about what freedom from the tyranny of the Internet means to you. Alleycat Player is a tool for those who want freedom and control over their own access to information. You do not need to be a prisoner of Youtube or Twitter but most people seem to prefer that because it is too hard to install a tool for freedom and to learn how to use it. I will NEVER watch a video on Youtube or Twitter or any other site if I don't have to. Why do you?

 

The reason why I post about Alleycat Player here and not anywhere else is because you are the intended audience. This is a power tool for those who take video watching seriously. It's soothing. I don't like to think if I don't have to. I basically considered it getting paid to work out. The problem? You can't live any kind of life doing it because the lines for work are 20 deep or more. Given the inflationary value trend, pay should be in the area of 25/hr or 200/day would be ideal. How right you are. And white women, especially Christians lead the charge, unfortunately. There is this assumption out there that we are "helping" foreign workers who are from "disadvantaged" third world countries. They get imported here (legally and illegally) to work in the worst of manufacturing and "dirty" jobs. Instead of companies being forced to improve because the employees demand it, due to lack of language and technical skills, the foreign workers accept substandard pay, safety and benefits. I know this first hand, as I have worked in two such facilities.

 

On a side note: WSJ had a piece out of California. Lots of "Covid" amongst immigrant labor in agriculture. Illegal workers do not want to report it when they get infected.

The rapid increase in the number of people who can’t feed themselves will be just an immediate outcome of the pandemic, which caused a disruption of food growth and logistics worldwide. More long-term damage is bound to materialize in the years to come.

 

β€œObviously social tensions will grow, migration will increase, conflicts will escalate and hunger will likely affect those who didn’t experience it before,” the official told the Russian news agency TASS.

 

WFP projections say Latin American nations face the most dramatic change in their situation, with the number of malnourished people increasing by as much as 269 percent, Beasley said. The same metric for countries in Eastern and Central Asia stands at 135 percent. Sub-Saharan Africa may see the number of their hungry almost double.

 

Global hunger is already high, Beasley warned. Unless bold action is taken now, β€œmany will die, children will suffer from the consequences of malnutrition for many years, and the world will lose all the progress made in fighting hunger over the past decade,” he said.

 

The price of inaction will be incredibly high. This year some 138 million people in 83 countries rely on WFP for their food supply, the official said. For many of them the UN humanitarian body is the β€œlast hope for survival”. In South Sudan 1.6 million people were added this year to the 5 million already requiring assistance. Just getting accurate information is very, very difficult, by design. Some reports indicate the US death rate (all cause) has declined since the "coronavirus outbreak". My best guess is that avoiding conventional medical care (which is admittedly the 3rd leading cause of death in the US and probably closer to #1) is very, very salubrious. RFK, Jr's site (Children's Health Defense) had a piece suggesting that a decline in infant mortality during the COVID "lockdown" was due to many babies not getting their "well baby" vaccine visits to pediatricians. SIDS, of course, is a vaccine death in most cases.

I agree with you about radio and the "pandemic". However, I also think the Gates vaccine experiment was part of the picture.

 

No less than Luc Montagnier has implicated 5G in the "pandemic". We do see much more severe problems with "coronavirus" in places with higher 5G exposure. However, the "virus" (exosome, maybe) does appear to be real. The "virus" may manifest in cells damaged by certain 5G frequencies, I think. I do not know if the "virus" causes COVID-19 or if the "virus" is actually like a "detox"/biological response to toxicity/damage.

 

5G/smart meters seem to enhance the growth of some types of mold, I have read. Perhaps markers of decay increase with 5G damage. Might explain different behavior of bacteria and "viruses".
