PHILADELPHIA >Pennsylvania delegates were ready for the week ahead and while Bernie Sanders supporters expressed discontent with the leaked emails, they shared one sentiment with Hillary Clinton supporters: itโs anything but Donald Trump.
Yasmeen Kaboud, a 20-year-old delegate from the University City section of Philadelphia, said she was still trying to evaluate her own thoughts about what happened, although it didnโt surprise her.
โI think weโre still trying to process exactly what happened,โ she said. โWe were a little suspicious but now, itโs like confirmed, itโs real. We know that we werenโt just being paranoid. (Iโm) just trying to process and see how itโs going to affect what we do going forward.โ
Jim Savage of Linwood, Delaware County, sitting at the Pennsylvania Democrat Committee breakfast with his wife, Midge Hecker, said, โ Iโm aggravated over it. But I think really, it just sort of confirms the things that people already.โ
โWould it have mattered in the outcome?โ he continued. โIโm not going to say that. Iโm not going to say it was stolen. The fact is they didnโt conduct the ways they should have.โ
He said those disparaging Sanders for being Jewish should be outright fired.
Savage said this fiasco makes it more difficult for the Democrats to accomplish what they want over the next few days.โ
โI think that that makes what the party wants to do this week harder,โ he said.
Shelly Rahman of Upper Darby, Delaware County, agreed.
โWe didnโt need it on the eve of the historical convention,โ she said.
Her excitement, however, remained steadfast.
โI was there to nominate the first black president of the country and Iโm here to nominate the first woman president,โ she said.
โBoth times,โ her husband, Abu, said, โI was the driver.โ
โIsnโt he lucky?โ Shelly smiled.
The Sanders delegates are also looking to have a good time.
โItโs exciting, fun,โ Savage said. โIโm looking forward to the actual convention.โ
He said he spent Sunday at an AFL-CIO event and delegate parties', including the one at the Sugarhouse casino held by U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, D-1, of Philadelphia.
โNobody throws a party like Bob Brady,โ Savage said.
Kaboud herself hopes to create good memories while at the convention.
โIโm here to get the most experience out of this,โ she said. โI will be doing everything that I can to have a good experience here, a memorable experience.โ
Asked if she would vote for Trump, she said absolutely not.
โFor me personally, โฆ the biggest thing we have to fear right now is a Trump presidency,โ the Muslim said. โI would abstain before I vote for Donald Trump.โ
She explained her reasoning.โOne of the biggest reasons why I donโt support Trump at all (is) just because his policies are blatantly un-American and discriminatory,โ she said.
โThis is really a personal election for me,โ she added. โI will do my best to not have Trump be president.โ
On the first day of the convention, Savage said there have been moments of difficulty as a Sanders supporter.
โItโs kind of been a lot of party people and Hillary supportersโฆ.sort of telling Bernie supporters grow up and get over it and it just makes that harder,โ he said.
When asked about voting for Trump, Savage pointedly said, โNo, Iโm a Hillary voter.โ
Then, he quickly added, โIโm a Bernie voter until he releases me and then Iโm a Hillary voter.โ
