According to Jacksonville 4 News Governor Ron DeSantis spent last weekend “huddled behind closed doors at a south Florida luxury hotel for a “Freedom Blueprint” retreatwith more than 100 donors, elected officials and conservative influencers.” According to the report from those present, “Laura Ingraham hosted a fireside chat with DeSantis on Sunday.”

 

You would think this ongoing network and relationship would need a mention, perhaps even a disclaimer, if the Fox News pundit was going to follow up with additional promotion of the same candidate. Alas, as more people become familiar with the tactics of the professionally Republican, what ends up being highlighted is the transparent effort to manipulate the viewer. WATCH:

Ms Ingraham continues her hypocriticalfalse front as a conservative. {GO DEEP} This weekend the multinational lobbying group Club for Growth, headed by David McIntosh, are assembling a strategy session with big Wall Street donors to organize the multi-candidate roadmap for Ron DeSantis.

 

(Via CBS) – A GOP source familiar with the closed-door donor retreat by the conservative Club for Growth confirmed to CBS News that the group is hosting a closed-press donor retreat for 2024 hopefuls during the same time as CPAC this week.

 

Club for Growth’s annual retreat will be held at the opulent Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, just three miles from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. However, Club for Growth, which has been public about looking to move the GOP past Trump, did not invite the former president to the retreat.

 

Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday morning about Club for Growth, derisively calling them “Club for NO Growth,” and saying the group “is an insignificant group of Globalists who I have beaten badly because of their anti America First views. They will only get the ‘stragglers.'”

 

Trump, meanwhile, will be headlining CPAC, which will be holding its annual conference in Maryland the same weekend.

I just ordered some white blackberries.

While it's amusing given the times we are in, I generally seek to grow more exotic varieties of things or just varieties I can't find in the store. Purple carrots, various beans/corn, blue tomatoes. Heirloom all the garden stuff.

Cane fruits and trees are much less commonly "heirloom". The cherry trees with 4 different varieties grafted together are kind of crazy, though…. but you don't have to worry about a pollenizer.

In the year since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has killed tens of thousands of Ukrainian men, women, and children; uprooted more than 13 million people from their homes and bombed more than 700 hospitals. The U.S. joins others in condemning Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified war against Ukraine. The United States is committed to the Pandemic Accord, to form a major component of the global health architecture for generations to come. Shared commitment, shared aspirations and shared responsibilities will vastly improve our system for preventing, preparing for, and responding to future pandemic emergencies.

 

We seeka Pandemic Accord that builds capacities; reduces pandemic threats posed by zoonotic diseases; enables rapid and more equitable responses; and establishes sustainable financing, governance, and accountabilityto ultimately break the cycle of panic and neglect.

 

There is a lot to build on in this draft related to these priorities. However, the draft is unbalanced toward response at the expense of prevention and preparedness. While we need to avoid duplicating substantive elements contained in the IHR, such as surveillance and alerts, we need to discuss how best to address pandemic prevention and preparedness here. These efforts should be mutually supportive and complementary.

 

We appreciate the focus on equity in Chapter III but also agree it must be better integrated across the draft.Our work must be inclusive and applicable for the improved health and wellbeing of all people. A commitment to “equity” must address inequities not only between countries, but also within them. Not just protecting populations from pandemics – but also from illness, death, and disrupted access to essential health care services during pandemics, including sexual and reproductive health services.

 

We must also recognize the roles of other international organizations and instruments. WTO is the most appropriate venue for discussions regarding legal obligations that fall under its own agreements, including discussions on the TRIPS Agreement.

 

We do not support “common but differentiated responsibilities and capabilities.” This concept is not appropriate in the context of pandemic PPR. We look forward to seeking common ground to best ensure universal application while also ensuring capacities are strengthened so that countries can meet their obligations.

 

We recognize the important role of financing and while we have concerns about some of the language in the draft, including specific allocations of domestic budgets or GDP, we seek to identify financing methods appropriate for this accord.

 

External stakeholder involvement is critical as a stronger PPR architecture will depend on their expertise and commitment. The INB should encourage inclusive solutions that leverage key stakeholders, such as the private sector and civil society.

 

Finally,the Pandemic Accord must stand the test of time while building on the lessons from previous pandemics. By creating solutions that are flexible and adaptable, by laying out commitments that are clear regarding triggers and responsibilities, and by strengthening coordination and capacities,together we can build a stronger global health architecture for all.

While most tree barks are safe to eat, two that are easier to identify are pine and birch. The inner bark of all birch and pine trees is nutritious and perfect as emergency food. Pine trees have chunky thick outer bark, longer needles and cones (of which the seeds are also edible!).

Among its many impacts, the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced a crucial truth about threats to global health – they require rapid, effective, and sustained international cooperation. It is in that context that we are pleased to announce that Ambassador Pamela K. Hamamoto has been selected to be lead U.S. Pandemic Negotiator on the proposed accord on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response currently being discussed at the World Health Organization.

 

This announcement reflects the commitment by the United States to take a whole-of-government approach to the negotiating process by putting into place a strong team, led by the Departments of State and Health and Human Services, with active engagement across U.S. departments and agencies responsible for development, security, economic, and other issues.

 

As lead U.S. Pandemic Negotiator, Ambassador Hamamoto will assume management and oversight of U.S. engagement in these important discussions, which we believe must yield an accord that effectively strengthens global health collaboration, improves systems for monitoring disease or pandemic outbreaks, bolsters national health security capacities, and enhances equity in pandemic preparedness and responses.

 

Prior to this assignment, Ambassador Hamamoto served as U.S. Permanent Representative to the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva (2014-2017), where she engaged regularly with international leaders on a wide range of global issues, including humanitarian affairs, sustainable development, global health, human rights, peace and security, women’s empowerment, internet governance, and climate change.

 

Ambassador Hamamoto also helped coordinate early responses to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2015, working across regions and institutions to rally support to the three affected countries and a strengthened WHO response.

 

In 2015, she co-founded International Gender Champions, a global network of leaders committed to advancing gender equality through specific actions and policy changes. She was also instrumental in the 2014 launch of the Global Health Security Agenda, a global effort that has grown to more than 70 partners focused on strengthening the world’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats.

Brown-Forman, Diageo, and Heaven Hill issued a joint statement saying they are "sympathetic to the concerns of the plaintiffs" but the fungus is a naturally occurring phenomenon and the companies "do not believe that they have caused any harm" to the people who filed the suit, the Times reported.

 

Buffalo Trace and Jim Bean chose not to comment.

Mortgage Rates Now Back Above 7%

 

Mortgage rates have been hit hard on two fronts over the past month. The first front is the obvious one: the bond market has moved in a way that forces rates to go higher. To be fair, it's ~~almost~~ FIFY always the bond market that forces rates to go wherever they're going.

 

A vast majority of the day-to-day movement in rates is a simple function of the trading levels in specific bonds. This has been and will continue to be the case, possibly forever. February (and now early March) economic data caused traders to worry about higher inflation and resilient economic growth. This makes traders want to sell bonds more than buy them, and that results in higher interest rates. But bonds aren't always everything when it comes to rate movement. The "everything else" category changes in composition depending on the landscape. For instance, during the 2020-2021 refi booms, rates were often limited by mortgage lenders' capacity to handle new business. The bond market actually allowed for much lower rates at times, but lenders simply couldn't handle the volume. There's a different problem in the "everything else" category right now. The regulator overseeing Fannie and Freddie recently changed some of the upfront fees required for all conforming mortgages (conforming = guaranteed by Fannie and Freddie). Depending on a borrower's credit score and the amount of a home's value they wish to borrow, their rate could instantly rise by 0.125% simply because a lender implemented the new fee requirements.

 

Without the impact of those fees, rates could still be in the high 6% range, or close to it. As it stands, the average lender is now back up into the low 7's for a well-qualified 30yr fixed scenario. These aren't the highest levels we've seen during this cycle, but they are the highest in more than 4 months (and not too far away from the long-term highs just under 7.4%). Incidentally, Freddie Mac's rate survey came out today and it showed 30yr fixed rates at 6.65. Understand that most of Freddie's survey responses come in on Monday and rates have risen since then. The survey also includes upfront points and does not include the new fees that are hitting a vast majority of borrowers. If we were to adjust for the market movement that's happened since Monday, the upfront costs, and the fees, Freddie's number would likely be right in line with 7.1%.

In his resignation letter, which the city released, Wojahn said he plans to "deal with my own mental health" and asked residents to keep his family in their prayers.

 

"While this investigation does not involve any official city business of any kind, it is in the best interests of our community that I step aside and not serve as a distraction," he wrote.

 

Originally from Wisconsin, Wojahn graduated from Georgetown University Law Center and has worked in legal advocacy and government relations.

A watchdog has demanded the Federal Election Commission (FEC) investigate the $62,000 Rep. Cori Bush paid her now-husband as a security guard from her campaign account.

The nonpartisan Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) asked FEC acting general counsel Lisa Stevenson to look into whether Squad member and BLM activist Bush 'used campaign funds for personal use.'

It was recently revealed that Bush, R-Mo., married Cortney Merritts in a private ceremony last month. Last year he was on the payroll of her re-election campaign.

'It appears Rep. Bush's campaign may have made payments for services that were unnecessary or above fair market value because of her personal relationship with the payee,' FACT executive director Kendra Arnold said in the complaint.

'If so, these payments would qualify as either impermissible payments to a family member or an impermissible gift.

While hiring family members is frowned upon, it is not illegal. It would only be illegal if push paid her now-spouse over 'fair market value.' Payments to family members must be for 'bonafide services' related to their official duties.

'Therefore, we request the FEC investigate whether Rep. Bush converted campaign funds for personal use by paying a salary that was not for bona fide services at fair market value,' FACT wrote. '

Ultimately, if one or more campaign laws are found to have been broken, we request the FEC hold the respondents accountable.'

Merritts was paid as Bush's security guard despite not having a license - which is required by the St. Louis Police Department, according to a Fox News report. Merritts was reportedly also not licensed for security in Washington, D.C.

Bush, 46, is back in the spotlight after in 2021 she took heat for spending $500,000 on private security despite her impassioned pleas to 'defund the police.'

'I'm going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life and I have too much work to do,' the former Black Lives Matter activist told CBS News in August 2021. 'So, if I end up spending $200,000, if I spend … 10 more dollars on it, you know what? I get to be here to do the work.'

'So, suck it up,' she added, 'defunding the police has to happen. We need to defund the police and put that money into social safety nets because we're trying to save lives.'

Two St. Louis cops were then fired for moonlighting on her security team without getting permission from their superiors.

Bush's campaign paid Merritts 24 bi-weekly installments of $2,500 in 2022 for security services. It paid another $250,000 to PEACE Security, a St. Louis-based firm, and $50,000 to a Nathaniel Davis, according to FEC records.

'Any time a member of Congress puts someone with a close personal relationship on the campaign payroll, increased scrutiny is necessary to ensure the legal standard has been met, which in this case is that the payments were for 'bona fide services at a fair market value,'' Arnold said in a statement.

'Both the fact that reportedly Bush's husband isn't licensed to provide security services for which he was paid, and that she was simultaneously paying large amounts to another company for the same services raise red flags that warrant an investigation by the FEC,' she added.

Bush is not the first 'Squad' member to hire her husband - Rep. Ilhan Omar funneled $2.9 million to a consulting firm run by her husband in 2021, which amounted to 80 percent of the company's revenue.

And you know sometimes things don't happen the way that we expected them or maybe our expectations were too high?
