Examining Carter's 'Malaise Speech,' 30 Years Later

 

Independence Day, 1979: Lines at gas pumps stretch for blocks, and President Jimmy Carter is scheduled to address the nation. But when he cancels last minute and disappears from the public eye, rumors spread of a health problem or, even worse, that he's left the country. After 10 days, he reemerges with a speech โ€” to address the energy crisis, unemployment, inflation and something else a bit more nebulous:

 

The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation.

The speech was later dubbed the "malaise speech," even though Carter never used that word.

"Jimmy Carter had grown increasingly convinced that Americans had to face up to the energy crisis, but they only could do this if they faced up to the crisis in their own values," says Kevin Mattson, author of "What the Heck Are You Up To, Mr. President?", which examines the underlying themes of Carter's speech. "He tried to push the energy crisis on to a kind of moral and civic plane, and the speech was used to unify around a sense of civic sacrifice."

Mattson tells NPR's Liane Hansen that Carter did some serious soul-searching before giving the speech, and he hoped to entice Americans to do the same.

"He wanted the country to become much more self-inquisitive," he says.

The reception to Carter's speech was overwhelmingly positive: Approving phone calls poured into the White House โ€” more calls than when President Richard Nixon had announced the invasion of Cambodia โ€” along with many letters of support. But the goodwill was short lived. Within days of the speech, Carter fired several members of his cabinet, closing what Mattson calls "a window of opportunity."

"It's from then on that Carter had a really difficult time at bouncing back and being seen on the part of the American people as a strong and significant leader โ€” especially a leader that could take America through solving the energy crisis," Mattson says.

"Carter goes out there and he essentially condemns the American way of life," he says. "He says our consumerism, our materialism have really gotten in the way of this problem."

Mattson says the fact that Americans responded positively to a speech that berated their way of life suggests that they don't mind having their values called into question. In that way, he says, the malaise speech had the potential to effect a significant cultural change.

"[Carter] did blow the opportunity," Mattson says. "But I think the original success that the speech had symbolizes the fact that Americans will listen when they're being criticized and when they're being called out to their better selves."

The 2024 Republican National platform is poised to be adopted at the ongoing 2024 GOP convention in Milwaukee.

One plank, as powerful as it is concise, calls for America to reaffirm and extend its leadership in a crucial area of geopolitical competition: the exploration and development of space.

 

Space rarely garners attention in party platforms, but it is an increasingly important arena of international competition, and potentially conflict.

Once safely protected by two seas and secure boarders, America is increasingly vulnerable to threats from abroad, many of them celestial in nature.

Oceans and border defenses are irrelevant to these new weapons. China and Russia have significant space capabilities and unsavory schemes for dominance.

Russia is developing and perhaps deploying orbital space weapons. China is working hard to beat America back to the moon. We are once again in a Cold War with an accompanying Space Race.

To win, we must counter the space ambitions of aggressor states, while leading the free world forward to prosperity on the final frontier.

 

The Trump administration was aware of these issues and established the United States Space Force. Trumpโ€™s presidency also saw major advancements in space commerce.

These were steps in the right direction. But the work is not done. History shows that in the long run victory goes to the nation that develops economic dominance in a new territory.

Holding a region you do not settle and develop has proven expensive and futile.

 

The GOP space plank, at just 50 words long, reveals a determination to win Space Race 2.0 through economic competition, not military conflict.

It calls for โ€œa robust manufacturing industry in near Earth orbit,โ€ sending โ€œAmerican astronauts back to the moon, and onward to Mars,โ€ and partnering with โ€œthe rapidly expanding commercial space sector to revolutionize our ability to access, live in, and develop assets in space.โ€

Again, the Trump White House understood the economic imperative and laid out the most comprehensive space civil and commercial agenda since the Kennedy years.

Trump refocused NASA on returning to the moon with commercial partners and aligned the international community with that goal under the Artemis Accords.

Two procurement experts from the Space Force are the first Guardian civilians to graduate from the demanding โ€œAzimuthโ€ aerospace missions training program for early career personnel.

Mallory Avila and Aman Zemoy, both acquisition logistics management specialists with the Space Forceโ€™s Space Systems Command, graduated in June from the three-week training program held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Azimuth is designed to immerse top performers in the board range of aerospace missions conducted across military services. Curriculum includes a wide range of aerospace training, including โ€“ for those whose careers may one day include supporting human spaceflight โ€“ conducting experiments in micro- and zero gravity, by way of a parabolic flight in a converted Boeing 727 airliner.

 

โ€œThat was the most fun Iโ€™ve ever had in my lifetime,โ€ said Zemoy, who grew up in Carson, California and graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona before joining SSC in 2021.

โ€œWe didn't realize you're going to have zero control over your body; you're just going to be tossing and tumbling โ€ฆ like a baby trying to walk, trying to figure out how to get it all together.

And then eventually some of us were able to conduct the experiment; some people were just completely discombobulated.โ€

 

Avila, a Rialto, California native, had a similarly rewarding experience, including a four-day-long electronic warfare exercise โ€“ the Special Warfare Orientation Course, or SWOC โ€“ that included setting up satellite communications ground stations in the field.

During a trip to the United Kingdom, U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman appeared at the Global Air and Space Chiefsโ€™ Conference, delivering a keynote address to a crowd of global leaders, industry partners and academics in the air and space defense industry, July 17.

Titled โ€œToward Integrated Defense in Space,โ€ Saltzmanโ€™s address began with a discussion on the current model of nuclear strategic deterrence using a historical anecdote referencing an early military use of the concept in western civilization: Thucydidesโ€™ History of the Peloponnesian War.

โ€œIn the โ€˜History of the Peloponnesian War,โ€™ Thucydides describes no less than 10 uses of what he calls a deterrence strategy, and that was in the conflict between Athens and Sparta,โ€ Saltzman said.

โ€œAside from one partial exception, they all fail spectacularly. In fact, in most cases, they primarily serve to provoke the exact behavior they were meant to prevent.โ€

 

Saltzman stated that although these early military deterrence strategies were largely unsuccessful, the concept has evolved greatly over time, culminating in a fundamental change with the development of nuclear strategic deterrence.

He emphasized that nuclear deterrence has demonstrated robust effectiveness and is an important component of the U.S. National Defense Strategy, preventing Great Power Competitors from escalating conflicts to unrestricted warfare.

However, he continued, by its nature, nuclear deterrence as a military strategy has limited utility in application against other real and potentially damaging threats.

 

Now, aggressors are developing new methods, employing limited, asymmetric and hybrid warfare in efforts to erode the established international order, including in the space domain, Salzman described.

He urged air and space military service chiefs to focus on developing the specific military capabilities needed, in support of their national security apparatuses, that โ€˜protect and defendโ€™ against these aggressions.

โ€œOver the course of my career, I have come to the conclusion that deterrence is really a term of policy best used to capture an ideal outcome of grand strategy; this is why I believe Integrated Deterrence is a valuable and worthy approach in the U.S.โ€™s National Defense Strategy,โ€ Saltzman said.

โ€œOur NDS describes it as a weaving together of capabilities and concepts with those of our international and interagency partners to dissuade aggression.โ€

 

He went on to describe high-level capabilities the U.S Space Force is currently providing in this effort and how the service is integrating with others around the world.

โ€œThe United States is proud to be part of an ever-growing group of allies and partnersโ€”many of them in the room todayโ€”a group of partners that are all working together to increase resiliency, redundancy and interoperability of all space-based capabilities to enhance our collective security,โ€ Saltzman said. โ€œIf we do this right, the net result is a condition of deterrence that maintains a safe, secure, and stable international environment, which is the ultimate goal of our national security policy.โ€

Concluding his keynote, Saltzman advocated for a shift in perspective related to the current model of military deterrence.

โ€œRecognizing that the Space Force is going to be wholly reliant on powerful partnerships, whether it's commercial industry, whether it's academia, the science and technology community, whether it's our allies and international partners, being integrated by design is fundamental to how I see success,โ€ Saltzman said.

 

On the periphery of the conference, Saltzman also engaged directly with defense officials from allied and partner nations, including a meeting with U.K. Royal Air Force Air and Space Commander Air Marshall Allan Marshall and Novak to discuss the ongoing AUKUS security partnership.

Additionally, Saltzman met with Tedman, discussing U.K. space power priorities and U.S. Space Force efforts to reoptimize for Great Power Competition.

Later the same day, Saltzman joined U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin in signing a shared vision statement with RAF Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton with an intent to further strengthen, integrate and accelerate the existing bilateral partnership in air and space between the U.S. and U.K. The statement is an update to an original version signed in 2021, which focused on collaboration over three lines of effort: operational harmonization, capabilities integration and systems resilience.

 

Throughout the trip, Saltman was aided by Air Marshal Paul Godfrey, an RAF officer recently assigned to the senior U.S. Space Force staff as the Assistant Chief of Space Operations for Future Concepts and Partnerships.

In this role, Godfrey is responsible for integrating allies and partners within the U.S. Space Forceโ€™s capability development strategy.

Saltzmanโ€™s trip to the UK yielded multiple opportunities for partnership development and collaboration with some of the U.S.โ€™s closest allies.

It also provided a platform in front of international military and industry leaders to convey a shared vision of defense in the interest of freedom and security in, from and to space.

It doesnโ€™t matter if the shoe is ugly. If the headlines surrounding it hit, itโ€™ll sell out. Former President Donald Trump took this sentiment to the next level back in February, launching a series of signature sneakers at the Philadelphia stop of SneakerCon. The response both in-person and online wasโ€ฆmixed at best, but the shoes practically flew off of the website where people could buy them. They immediately became the sort of vaguely cursed collectorโ€™s item that transcended politics, with one pair reselling on eBay for $9,000. Crucially, these shoes launched just a day after Trump lost a civil fraud case in New York City and was ordered to pay $450 million in damages.

 

Trumpโ€™s latest sneaker (three words I cannot believe I just typed) utilizes the same ethos: turn press into profit. Just days after a failed assassination attempt on the former president on July 13, Trump has launched his latest sneakers: the FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT High Tops. Featuring a similar shape and construction as the Nike Blazer or Vans Sk8-Hi, the white FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT silhouette is emblazoned with an American Flag print around the ankle cuff and a gold tongue tab. More notably though, the shoeโ€™s upper displays a now-infamous image of Trump moments after the failed assassination attempt, anchored by the words FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. While itโ€™s far from a Sneaker of the Year contender, the shoe accomplishes what it sets out to: capitalizing on a moment of controversy and leaning into polarizing political fandom to the tune of $1.5 million if (or rather when) the shoe sells out.

 

Like the prior releases from Trump Sneakers, these shoes are clearly marketed as a collectorโ€™s item rather than a pair of daily beaters. The new silhouette is limited to 5,000 pairs, with some sizes already sold out just hours after the launch. On top of that, a random 10 pairs will be signed by President Trump, only adding to the fervor surrounding the drop. Reporters have noted that in the days since the assassination attempt, โ€œmemorabiliaโ€ from the Butler, PA rally at which it took place has been surging on eBay, with everything from parking passes to counterfeit ticket stubs fetching high price tags. MUFON Says It Has Alien Metal Sample

The original replacement included coordination with Republicansโ€ฆ Joe Biden would be replaced with Gavin Newsom and Donald Trump would be replaced with Ron DeSantis.

 

Newsom and DeSantis are both controlled by the

trans-national security state. We did a Newsom / DeSantis debate, Newsom went to China to look "presidential" and we allowed Ron DeSantis some victories in Florida to look "presidential" for the Primary. The Newsom / DeSantis events were trial balloons.

 

DeSantis fizzled out and Black Hats were stuck with Newsom and another unknown-at-the-time controlled candidate within the RNC.

 

However, after all the attempted "dirtying up" of Trump with constant bad press, indictments, convictions, etc., we fooled ourselves thinking Trump would drop out and not become more popular. We were wrong.

 

We are still replacing Bidenโ€ฆ but the DNC replacement candidate is being discussed since the Newsom / DeSantis model didn't work.

 

Newsom is planning for a 2028 presidential run and he'll settle for a DNC position or Cabinet Appointment now and wait his turn. This leaves Kamala and some other less-supported candidates.

 

JD Vance was approached by Black Hats with an offer but he refused. JD Vance is not a controlled asset and has been written off at this time.

 

White Hats posing as "black hats tried to make another offer to JD Vanceโ€ฆ but, again, he refused. The other Trump would-be VP candidates were a disappointment when approached by "black hats" with an offer.

Why Kecksburg?

One of the most famous UFO sightings in Pennsylvania is our very own version of the 1947 incident in Roswell, New Mexico, where the crash and recovery of a US Army high-altitude balloon became the center of a conspiracy theory involving UFOs and extraterrestrials, and it happened in Kecksburg.

 

In 1965, a fireball flying across the sky was witnessed by thousands of onlookers across six states.

The object caused sonic booms near Pittsburgh and ended up crashing in Kecksburg.

Some locals claimed to have seen the large, acorn-like object fall into the forest.

The forest area was quickly sealed to the public and the incident resulted in a search by the U.S. military, scientific studies, numerous conflicting accounts, and even a lawsuit against NASA.

 

Since then, the small town of Kecksburg has become a hub for all things alien, including the annual UFO festival.

The three-day festival features UFO investigators and experts, exhibits, live music, an alien-themed parade, fireworks, and much more.

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijingโ€™s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

 

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

 

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as โ€œoppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian peopleโ€™s right to self-determination".

The ICJโ€™s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

US Offshore Wind Farm Shut Down After Turbine Debris Fouls Beaches

July 16 (Reuters) โ€“ The Vineyard Wind offshore wind project off the coast of Massachusetts is shut down until further notice while authorities investigate a turbine blade failure that caused debris to wash up on beaches, a federal agency said on Tuesday.

 

The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) said it was working closely with Vineyard Wind to determine the cause of the incident, which left potentially dangerous debris on beaches on the island of Nantucket.

 

โ€œThere were no injuries reported, but operations are shut down until further notice,โ€ a BSEE spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

 

The incident is a blow to both Vineyard Wind, the first major U.S. offshore wind farm, and the nationโ€™s budding offshore wind industry. The sector is regarded as critical to meeting President Joe Bidenโ€™s climate change goals but has been struggling with soaring costs and delays.

 

Vineyard Wind said the turbineโ€™s manufacturer, GE, would analyze the root cause of the incident. The turbine was in its commissioning phase and was still undergoing testing, according to company spokesperson Craig Gilvarg.

 

GE Vernova said the investigation was progressing.

 

โ€œSafety is a top priority at GE Vernova,โ€ a company spokesperson said in a statement.

 

Just last month, Vineyard Wind announced that it had installed 21 of the projectโ€™s expected 62 turbines, and that 10 were generating power. It is expected to produce enough electricity to power 400,000 homes once it is fully operational.

 

The turbine blade broke on Saturday, and on Tuesday authorities said they had closed beaches on the south shore of Nantucket Island due to debris washing ashore, according to a statement on the Town of Nantucket web site.

 

โ€œIn some areas, significant sharp debris has been observed floating in the water and is often hidden beneath the surface. Small fragments along the shoreline can pose a considerable hazard to swimmers and beachgoers,โ€ the statement said.

 

The incident came during the busy summer tourist season, when the islandโ€™s population swells to 80,000 from its usual 14,000.

Adam Weishaupt (1748โ€“1830) became professor of Canon Law and practical philosophy at the University of Ingolstadt in 1773.

He was the only non-clerical professor at an institution run by Jesuits,kek whose order Pope Clement XIV had dissolved in 1773. The Jesuits of Ingolstadt, however, still retained the purse strings and some power at the University, which they continued to regard as their own.

Transition

Having, with difficulty, dissuaded some of his members from joining the Freemasons, Weishaupt decided to join the older order to acquire material to expand his own ritual. He was admitted to lodge "Prudence" of the Rite of Strict Observance early in February 1777. His progress through the three degrees of "blue lodge" masonry taught him nothing of the higher degrees he sought to exploit, but in the following year a priest called Abbรฉ Marotti informed Zwack that these inner secrets rested on knowledge of the older religion and the primitive church. Zwack persuaded Weishaupt that their own order should enter into friendly relations with Freemasonry, and obtain the dispensation to set up their own lodge. At this stage (December 1778), the addition of the first three degrees of Freemasonry was seen as a secondary project.[15]

With little difficulty, a warrant was obtained from the Grand Lodge of Prussia called the Royal York for Friendship, and the new lodge was called Theodore of the Good Council, with the intention of flattering Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria. It was founded in Munich on 21 March 1779, and quickly packed with Illuminati. The first master, a man called Radl, was persuaded to return home to Baden, and by July Weishaupt's order ran the lodge.[15]

The next step involved independence from their Grand Lodge. By establishing masonic relations with the Union lodge in Frankfurt, affiliated to the Premier Grand Lodge of England, lodge Theodore became independently recognised, and able to declare its independence. As a new mother lodge, it could now spawn lodges of its own. The recruiting drive amongst the Frankfurt masons also obtained the allegiance of Adolph Freiherr Knigge.[15]
