Carrier USS Abraham Lincoln Heads to Middle East as Iran Threatens Strikes Against Israel

 

West Coast carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is setting sail to the Middle East from the Pacific to relieve the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and its strike group. Meanwhile, the Navy is sending additional ships to the region following threats from Iran, Pentagon officials announced on Friday evening.

“To maintain a carrier strike group presence in the Middle East, the Secretary has ordered the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to replace the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, currently on deployment in the Central Command area of responsibility,” reads the Pentagon statement.

 

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, “has ordered additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers to the U.S. European Command and U.S. Central Command regions. The Department is also taking steps to increase our readiness to deploy additional land-based ballistic missile defense.”

 

The U.S. moves to bolster military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East follows reports that Iranian military officials and proxy forces in Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen will meet to discuss options to retaliate against Israel following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

 

“Iran and the resistance members will conduct a thorough assessment after the meeting in Tehran to find the best and most effective way to retaliate against [Israel],” a senior Iranian official told newswire Reuters.

 

In April, Iran launched a complex missile and lethal drone attack toward Israel in response to an Israeli strike against the Iranian embassy in Syria.

 

The Iranian attack was repelled in part due to U.S. guided-missile destroyers that intercepted cruise and ballistic missiles in the first combat use of the Standard Missile 3.

 

As of Monday, Lincoln was operating in the vicinity of Hawaii following its July 11 deployment from San Diego and TR was operating in the Persian Gulf, according to USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker.

 

It’s unclear on the timing of the transition between the two strike groups. Lincoln could take two weeks or more to cross the Pacific and Indian Ocean to arrive in the Middle East. Roosevelt, which deployed on Jan. 11, has been operating in the Middle East since July 12 as part of Operation Prosperity Guardian to protect merchant traffic in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. TR was moved from the Pacific to the Middle East to keep a carrier in the region and prevent USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) and its escorts from being extended a third time, USNI News first reported. The next East Coast carrier set to head to the region, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), is still off the East Coast and in the midst of its pre-deployment training, USNI News understands.

For years, Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats lied about President Biden’s health. It resulted in a coup against a sitting U.S. president. Now, Ms. Harris and the Democratic Party are pushing a new lie: Project 2025.

 

Let me explain what Project 2025 is and isn’t. Project 2025 is the absurd vision of people attempting to position themselves and their policies as part of former President Donald Trump’s next administration. They have nothing to do with Mr. Trump or his campaign, and why these outside parties are doing this is anybody’s guess.

 

Democrats can’t stop talking about this fantasy because they don’t have a plan, because their candidate was so weak he dropped out of the race, because they are trying everything in their power to distract from Ms. Harris’ failures and dangerously liberal track record — a record that, if left to grow, will be far worse than anything President Biden could have ever carried out. With the American dream further out of reach than ever, it’s the only play Democrats have left.

 

Project 2025 is not a blueprint for anything resembling a second Trump administration. It is a fable with ideas that, as Mr. Trump clearly said, are “absolutely ridiculous and abysmal.” Before Mr. Trump’s statement went out, the campaign tried again and again to warn the people behind these plans that they did not speak for the campaign and that unless a message came directly from the campaign, it was anonymous speculation.

 

Only one person speaks for Donald Trump, and that’s Donald Trump. Not “anonymously sourced former officials.” Not think tanks. Donald Trump. That’s it.

 

If you want to see a blueprint for the next Trump administration, look at the party platform, a commonsense guide to how we will recover from the catastrophe that is “Bidenomics,” from an open border that is crippling our economy, from a world on the brink of World War III.

 

Mr. Trump wants to seal the border, restore the American dream to hardworking families, defend our Constitution and stop the crime epidemic that is destroying our cities. He will fight to protect Social Security and Medicare with no cuts and will not change the retirement age. He will slash costly and burdensome regulations and cut federal funding for any schools spreading the dangerous ideologies that are infiltrating our children’s classrooms. Jewish students will feel safe again. America will be energy-independent again. We will make America great once again.

 

The Republican Party is the party of common sense. Project 2025 possesses little, if any, of that. It is the left’s boogeyman, and it distracts from the genuine dialogue Americans should be having about the failed Harris-Biden years.

 

But this is being done on purpose. The Democratic Party chooses to run on fear. What Americans should actually be frightened by is the idea of another four years of the failed policies that are on the verge of ruining our country forever. And when Democrats see the crowds filled with love for Mr. Trump, when they see him survive an assassin’s bullet, neither cowering nor wavering, before he pumps his fist in the air and tells the American people — Republican and Democrat alike — to “fight, fight, fight,” they are petrified by his unmistakable energy, strength and leadership — and choose to spread lies.

 

But don’t worry. We’ve seen everything, and we are solely focused on winning on Election Day, winning by historic margins, winning for the American people, to restore the promise of our country. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.

F-16 Fighter Jet Drops Fuel Tanks Over Michigan During Emergency, Explosion Reported in Lake Huron

An F-16 fighter jet from the Ohio Air National Guard was forced to drop two fuel tanks over Michigan after suffering an emergency incident.

 

CBS reported that one of the fuel tanks released landed in Lake Huron in Iosco, resulting in an explosion.

 

The other tank landed in the Baldwin Plaza parking lot, which includes a Save-a-Lot and a Tractor Supply.

 

Police reported that neither fuel tank injured bystanders, but vehicles in the Baldwin Plaza parking lot sustained minor damages.

 

Detriot News reported that the Oscoda Airport received a distress call from the aircraft before the tanks were released but never heard from the F-16 again.

 

Iosco County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the F-16 returned safely to Toledo without further incident.

An F-16 fighter jet from the Ohio Air National Guard landed safely in Ohio after having an emergency while flying over Michigan. The jet needed to drop two fuel tanks, one of which exploded in a lake.

 

At about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, the Iosco County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an explosion in the area of Baldwin Resort Road near Lake Huron, according to a release.

 

Law enforcement authorities discovered two F-16s from the 180th Fighter Squadron in Toledo were operating in the area. One had declared an emergency and dumped two full external fuel tanks.

 

One of the tanks landed in Lake Huron and exploded, while the other landed in the Baldwin Plaza parking lot, which includes a Tractor Supply, Sav-a-lot, and a Michigan Secretary of State location.

 

There was minor damage to a few vehicles, but no one was injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

Biden administration makes huge U-turn in plea deal offer for 9/11 'mastermind' that sparked outrage

 

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has dramatically revoked a proposed plea deal for the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks that triggered outrage.

 

Austin said Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and two accomplices were no longer eligible for life sentences in prison without the prospect of the death penalty in return for a guilty plea.

Japan mandates app to ensure national ID cards aren't forged

 

First delays, then data leaks – now fraud detection needed at point of use

 

The Japanese government has released details of of an app that verifies the legitimacy of its troubled My Number Card – a national identity document.

 

Beginning in 2015, every resident of Japan was assigned a 12 digit My Number that paved the way for linking social security, taxation, disaster response and other government services to both the number itself and a smartcard.

 

The plan was to banish bureaucracy and improve public service delivery – but that didn't happen. My Number Card ran afoul of data breaches, reports of malfunctioning card readers, and database snafus that linked cards to other citizens' bank accounts. Public trust in the scheme fell, and adoption stalled.

 

Now, according to Japan's Digital Ministry, counterfeit cards are proliferating to help miscreant purchase goods – particularly mobile phones – under fake identities.

 

Digital minister Taro Kono yesterday presented his solution to the counterfeits: a soon to be mandatory app that confirms the legitimacy of the card.

 

The app uses the camera on a smartphone to read information printed on the card – like date of birth and name. It compares those details to what it reads from info stored in the smartcard's resident chip, and confirms the data match without the user ever needing to enter their four-digit PIN.

 

The app stores the date and time of confirmation as a record of the transaction, but personal information of the user is not stored, according to documentation [PDF] released by the ministry.

 

If all goes according to plan, the app should be ready for general release in late August.

 

The app's developers – from the ministry and the private sector – have already consulted with businesses and institutional authorities, defined requirements and come up with a working product. It still needs to e tested and verified before rollout.

 

Japan has struggled with getting the general population to adopt the optional card. Prime minister Fumio Kishida directed ministers to "make every effort to promote" the use of the card in mid-2022 – when uptake was stalled at less than 50 percent over six years after its debut. By the end of fiscal 2022, the number of applicants for the card had jumped to 76.3 percent.

 

The country needs high adoption for several reasons, not least of which is a plan to replace health insurance cards with the My Number ID cards this year.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III assumed direct oversight of the case and effectively put the death penalty back on the table.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on Friday overruled the overseer of the war court at Guantánamo Bay and revoked a plea agreement reached earlier this week with the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and two alleged accomplices.

The Pentagon announced the decision with the release of a memorandum relieving the senior official at the Defense Department responsible for military commissions of her oversight of the capital case against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and his alleged accomplices for the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field.

The overseer, retired Brig. Gen. Susan K. Escallier, signed a pretrial agreement on Wednesday with Mr. Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi that exchanged guilty pleas for sentences of at most life in prison. In taking away the authority, Mr. Austin assumed direct oversight of the case and canceled the agreement, effectively reinstating it as a death-penalty case. He left Ms. Escallier in the role of oversight of Guantánamo’s other cases.

Because of the stakes involved, the “responsibility for such a decision should rest with me,” Mr. Austin said in an order released Friday night by the Pentagon.

“Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pretrial agreements that you signed on July 31, 2024.”

Ms. Escallier’s approval of the agreement that was reached between prosecutors and the defendants over two years of negotiations had appeared to resolve the case, which had been mired in pretrial hearings since 2012.

Mr. Austin was traveling abroad and returned to the United States later that day.

By then, prosecutors in the case had alerted the decision to family members of those killed in the attacks, some of whom expressed disappointment and anger that a death sentence was no longer possible. So did Republican leaders.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the longtime Republican leader, called the plea agreement “a revolting abdication of the government’s responsibility to defend America and provide justice.”

Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas called the deal “disgraceful and an insult to the victims of the attacks,” and introduced legislation intended to nullify it.

But Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois and the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, hailed the plea agreement as a “small measure of justice and finality to the victims and their loved ones.”

A senior Pentagon official said that the decision was the secretary’s alone, and that the White House had no involvement. The official said Mr. Austin had never supported a plea deal and wanted the military commission trials to proceed.

Mr. Austin’s action was met with disbelief by lawyers at Guantánamo Bay who were preparing for a hearing, possibly as soon as Wednesday, for the judge in the case, Col. Matthew N. McCall, to question Mr. Mohammed about whether he understood and voluntarily agreed with the plea.

“If the secretary of defense issued such an order, I am respectfully and profoundly disappointed that after all of these years the government still has not learned the lessons of this case, and the mischief that results from disregarding due process and fair play,” said Gary D. Sowards, Mr. Mohammed’s lead defense counsel.

Senate Committee Advances $852.2 Billion Defense Budget Bill

 

The Senate Appropriations Committee held a mark-up hearing on Aug. 1 to advance their proposal for the 2025 Defense Appropriations Act. The Senate version of the annual budget bill comes in at $852.2 billion, compared to the $833 billion version the House passed in June.

 

The Senate committee approved the defense budget bill in a 28–0 vote, moving it one step closer to a full vote on the Senate floor.

 

“This bipartisan bill builds on our efforts in the National Security Supplemental to strengthen our defenses in key regions, deter conflict, promote stability, and ultimately, keep our nation safe—with new investments to ensure our military remains the best in the world while supporting our servicemembers and standing with our allies,” Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said following the hearing.

Auburn University will dissolve its Office of Inclusion and Diversity by Aug. 15, officials announced Monday.

 

Auburn is the fifth state college to close its diversity office after Gov. Kay Ivey signed a law banning DEI programs and the teaching of certain “divisive concepts” this spring. Colleges have until Oct. 1 to ensure they’re in compliance with the law.

 

Staff members will be reassigned to other departments and vacant roles, officials said.

 

“Throughout this process, it was critical that we respected our AU colleagues affected by this change,” Auburn University Provost Vini Nathan and Senior Vice Presidents Kelli Shomakeer and Bobby Woodard said in a letter to students and staff Monday morning.

 

“Some colleagues will fill existing vacancies, while others will assume new roles in existing offices to assist with student recruitment, admissions or to support student success and student organizations. Depending on their responsibilities, they will report to the Office of Enrollment Management, Division of Student Affairs or the Office of the Provost.”

 

Auburn’s Office of Inclusion and Diversity was founded in 2016 at the recommendation of students and staff. The department works to improve retention and recruitment of underrepresented groups on campus and oversees a number of educational and cultural programs, according to its webpage, which is still active.

 

Auburn recently reported the highest spending in the state, about $5.6 million, on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, according to a response to a 2022 legislative inquiry.

 

Most of those efforts were focused on federally mandated compliance activities, like Title IX and disability services. About $1.8 million of that total went to the newly formed diversity office, which employed 14 full-time employees and three part-time graduate assistants at the time.

 

According to its 2023 Inclusion Report, Auburn recently saw a 43% increase in underrepresented graduate school applicants after implementing a program targeted at diversifying its pipeline. The department also was responsible for facilitating thousands of dollars of donations toward student groups and charitable causes.

 

It is unclear which of the office’s services, if any, will remain after Aug. 15. In Monday’s announcement, officials said they have been working with a number of stakeholders to develop recommendations to “ensure Auburn advances its mission while being consistent with applicable law.”

 

University of Alabama System campuses, which made similar announcements last week, are working to create new offices that they say will work toward similar goals.

 

“We remain resolute in our commitment to deliver exceptional experiences and to support all students, with particular emphasis on providing access and opportunity,” Auburn’s statement read. “We are dedicated to ensuring the First Amendment is celebrated and that all students, faculty and staff are welcomed, valued, respected and engaged.”

Atomic threat: Here’s how Trump is to blame for the world being on the brink of nuclear war

 

Washington has upped the ante with a proposed new missile deployment in Germany, and a move from the ex-president made it possible

 

Friday marks five years since the termination of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, signed by the Soviet Union and the US in 1987. For a long time, the consequences of this step were overshadowed by other tensions in the international arena: public attention was focused on different topics and it seemed that ‘post-INF’ issues interested only experts in the sphere itself.

 

However, the fifth anniversary is being celebrated in a truly “grand manner.” The US offered a “gift” to Russia by announcing plans to begin “episodic deployments” of its ground-launched missiles in Germany in 2026. Russia didn’t slack on the matter: President Vladimir Putin responded that if these plans are implemented, Moscow will lift the unilateral moratorium on the deployment of its own intermediate-range missiles. Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not rule out that these could be nuclear. Such an “exchange of pleasantries” signifies a new “missile crisis” that may surpass those of the 1970s and ‘80s that eventually led to the signing of the original treaty.

 

At that time, the deployment of new nuclear missiles in Europe led to the deterioration of Soviet-US relations to their lowest point since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The issue was solved radically – by signing the INF Treaty the US and the USSR prohibited themselves from having any (either nuclear or non-nuclear) ground-launched missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers. From a military-strategic point of view, this put the US in a more advantageous position. Firstly, the USSR eliminated twice as many rockets – 1,846 compared to 846 by the US. Secondly, air- and sea-launched missiles of similar range – the United States’ key instrument of power projection – were not included in the agreement.

 

The Soviet leadership consented to such conditions in large part due to political reasons – back then the Kremlin believed that Soviet-US relations would eventually reach a new level and weapons would no longer play a key role in ensuring security. However, gradually this mood changed and Moscow increasingly criticized the 1987 deal. Putin eventually called the treaty “unilateral disarmament”.

 

The new Russian Federation also expressed concern over American compliance. Nevertheless, Moscow’s rhetoric did not exceed certain limits: the issue of terminating the agreement was never raised at the highest level. The storm clouds started to gather in the mid-2010s, when the US raised concerns that, according to its information, Russia violated the treaty and tested a ground-launched cruise missile with a range of over 500 km. Subsequently it was revealed that the missile in question was the 9M729, which is part of the Iskander system.

 

Donald Trump’s presidential administration named Russia’s development of the 9M729 as the official reason for launching the process of withdrawal from the INF Treaty in February 2019. However, in reality, the reasoning was more complicated. Almost simultaneously with the emergence of complaints about Russia’s compliance with the INF Treaty, a major discussion broke out in the US about the development of China’s capabilities. Unlike Moscow and Washington, Beijing wasn’t bound by the INF Treaty and therefore could develop ground-based missiles without breaching any international prohibitions. By the mid-2010s, these weapons formed the backbone of China’s missile arsenal; in 2017 the Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral Harry Harris, estimated that “approximately 95%” of those missiles would violate the INF if China were a signatory.

 

As a result, the Americans started to view Beijing’s capabilities as a key issue that affected the balance of power in Asia-Pacific. Chinese ground-launched DF-21D and DF-26 missiles earned the notable nicknames “carrier killer” and “Guam killer” in the US. Even when the INF was still in force, many American experts speculated about the need to withdraw from it or at least to revise its terms so that the US could develop and deploy its own ground-based missile systems in the region as a counterbalance to China.

Graham Pushes Senators To Commit To War On Iran If Israel Attacked

 

South Carolina Republican Senator and well-known hawk Lindsey Graham is salivating over the prospect of war with Iran at a moment regional tensions are boiling in the wake of Israel assassinating Hamas' political leader in Tehran and Hezbollah's senior military commander in Beirut.

 

Graham on Wednesday introduced a bill that if passed would authorize military action against Iran if Hezbollah attacks Israel. The resolution says that the Senate "asserts that efforts to deter Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic of Iran are most credible when the President keeps all options on the table, including military force."

 

The bill further authorizes military action against Iran if the country is deemed on the cusp of achieving a nuclear bomb. Iranian officials have lately signaled a major boost in its nuclear program at key sites. Though Iran's leaders have yet to change the country's official nuclear doctrine of seeing the bomb as 'unIslamic' (while long claiming the program is only for peaceful nuclear energy purposes), Tehran's rhetoric has shifted of late to issuing warnings that it could produce a nuke if it wanted to.

 

The resolution further underscores that Iran and Hezbollah shall be held responsible for "any adverse impacts on the people of Lebanon that result from an attack on the State of Israel by Hezbollah" while also urging the US governemnt to use "all diplomatic tools and power projection capabilities" to punish Israel's fiercest regional enemies.

 

As for the nuclear aspect, Graham has sought to invoke an Authorization for Use of Military Force which would greenlight a Washington military response if Iran's nuke program is developed to the point of becoming a direct national security threat to the United States.

 

"Iran will keep going until somebody tells them to stop," Graham said in a press briefing this week. "It is time to put red lines on their nuclear program."

 

He asserted that it is "a certainty" that if the US doesn't quickly get tougher on Iran, it will only be a matter of weeks or months more the country achieves nuclear weapons status. "Their ability to enrich to weapons grade is now a matter of weeks, not months," Graham said. "Their ability to weaponize the material has advanced, and it is now time for Congress to lend their voice to the proper response."

France warns citizens to leave Iran

 

Paris cited an increased risk of military escalation as the reason for its latest advisory

 

The French Foreign Ministry has issued a recommendation that the nation’s citizens leave Iran and avoid traveling there, “whatever the reason.” The ministry cited “heightened risk of military escalation in the region.”

 

The warning came in the wake of the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday. Iran blamed Israel for the killing, though West Jerusalem has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.

 

The assassination led to an uptick in tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as Lebanon-based Hezbollah. Reports in Western media suggest that Iranian retaliation against Israel may be imminent.

 

French citizens currently in Iran were advised to “leave as soon as possible,” a statement published on the ministry’s website said on Friday. It also called on people to exercise “great vigilance” while in Iran, “stay away from all demonstrations” and regularly consult the embassy’s website.

 

Paris has also ordered additional security measures at Jewish sites across France, citing the threat of “revenge” attacks over Haniyeh’s killing. “The risk of acts being committed is real,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said.

 

France is home to the world’s third largest Jewish population, after Israel and the US, and is also home to Europe’s biggest Muslim community, according to AFP.

 

On Thursday, the New York Times reported that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had supposedly ordered a direct strike against Israel in response to the Hamas political chief’s assassination.

 

CNN and Axios reported on Friday that US officials expect an imminent attack against Israel by Tehran, which could also involve Hezbollah. Iran has vowed to avenge the Hamas leader’s killing, with Khamenei stating that Israel would be “severely punished.”

 

Tensions between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah had already been running high due to the military campaign in Gaza. In the wake of Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel last October, West Jerusalem responded with a extensive bombing campaign followed by a ground invasion of Gaza, which local health authorities have claimed has cost tens of thousands of lives so far.

 

Moscow has repeatedly warned about the risks of the Gaza conflict spilling over into a major war in the Middle East and called on all sides to exercise restraint. The Russian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Haniyeh’s assassination and warned that such actions were “fraught with dangerous consequences for the entire region.”

She filed the lawsuit because her Right-to-Know request to the Erie County Board of Elections for 2020 election records was DENIED. This ruling is big-time vindication and a slap in the face to every election fraud doer and denier.

The Justice Department sued TikTok on Friday for illegally collecting children’s data, escalating a long-running battle between the U.S. government and the Chinese-owned app.

 

TikTok broke the law by gathering personal information from users under the age of 13 without their parents’ permission, according to the government’s complaint. The company knowingly allowed children under the age of 13 to create and use TikTok accounts, the government said, and frequently failed to honor parents’ requests to delete their children’s accounts.

 

The lawsuit, which was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, said those practices violated both the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, a law that restricts the online tracking of children, and a 2019 agreement between TikTok and the government in which the company pledged to notify parents before collecting children’s data and remove videos from users under 13 years old.

 

The suit, which also names TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, asks for the court to fine the companies over the violations.
