What if the push to vote early by the Republicans including POTUS is a tactic to get rid of early voting all together.

NV is important to Trump!

Good evening, blog mates.

No SOS in-person vote numbers tonight, I'm told. Will post in early AM. About 26K mail ballots posted, took 2K off GOP lead. But that will almost surely be offset by early voting numbers posted tomorrow.

 

I have some real news:The early returns are not good for Democratic Reps. Susie Lee and Steven Horsford. Both were considered near-locks because of weak opponents and national GOP not investing. But both could be in tighter races than everyone thought. Maybe.

In both races, the Rs have more ballots – 900 in CD3 and 250 in CD4. This could change as the turnout becomes more substantial, and the indies go for the incumbents.But Lee is trailing in a district Trump almost won in 2020, and Horsford has enough rural counties that his vote may be skewed against him now.

Good afternoon, blog mates.

With great blogging comes great responsibility, but I am not responsible for what partisans will use to spin the numbers I am providing. Republicans trying to create the narrative that Trump has Nevada clinched are either overconfident or trying to create the predicate for a challenge if Harris ekes it out here. Democrats who say the numbers don’t look as bad as they look are relying on four consecutive presidential cycles of doing what it takes to win, despite an early turnout pattern that looks ominous.

 

But: Data is the data, context is the context, projections are projections.

 

So what do the numbers say and what don’t they say:

 

Distilled –they don’t say it’s over but they also don’t say Democrats should brush off the GOP lead that has never before existed in presidential yearsduring early voting.

 

Bear with me while I give you the latest numbers and then show why 2022 might actually be a better data point now than 2020.

 

After 16,000 or so Washoe ballots were added this AM:

 

425,000 have voted, or 21 percent, and the GOP has a16,000-voter margin in ballots, or 4 percent.

 

The Washoe mail dump bumped up that county’s share of thevote to 18.5 percent, almost 2 points over its registration; Clark is now down 5 points relative to its 73 percent of the registration numbers – I wouldn’t think that can last, but if it does, Harris loses and that Senate race could be very close;the rurals are still punching above their weight at 13 percent of the vote, or 3 points above registration.

 

Republicans have a 3 point turnout edge statewide, 4.5 in Clarkaccounting for most of that because the Dems have minuscule turnout advantages by percentage in Washoe and the rurals.

 

The exact numbers for those interested;

In a very favorable scenario for Harris, if Dems are winninging indies by 55-45 and both parties are holding 90 percent of their bases, here’s what happens:

 

HARRIS 202,915 47.7%

TRUMP 206,381 48.5%

REST 16,030 3.8%

TOTAL 425,327

D/R Difference -3,466

So it’s very simple: If the turnout pattern remains this way, Harris will lose Nevada.

 

But what are the chances it does? Therein lies the rub.

 

Let me show you some data points:

 

–16 percent of the GOP in-person vote so far is from those who voted on Election Day in 2022. That’s because GOP leaders are encouraging folks to vote early.Only 5 percent of Dem voters were Election Day voters two years ago. The net difference is about14,000 votes, or pretty close to the GOP firewall right now.

 

–Because of the indie explosion, the partisan ballot lead is less predictive. (This is not a good development for us oracles, by the way.)The Dems firmly believe they are leading among indies who have already voted, and those skew older. Voters over the age of 60 are two-thirds of the indie vote so far;voters under the age of 30 are only 9 percent. (In 2020, voters under 30 were a fifth of indie voters. It could be higher this time with AVR (automatic voter reg).Voters of color are just under athird of the indie vote so far,already reaching the percentage from 2020.

—After five days of data, theClark early vote and mail percentageshave been remarkably consistent. TheRepubs have been in the high 40s or at 50 percent in in-person and the Dems at highs 20s and 30s.In mail, the Dems have been in the mid to high 40s and the Rs in the mid to high 20s. About 58 percent of the turnout in Clark is from mail and 42 percent from in-person voting. Let’s see if these trends – and they are trends after five days of data – hold in the second week.

 

Frankly, as I have been telling you, I don’t think the old models make sense with this unprecedented turnout pattern. I will show you (again) the 2020 results:

I am not sure what that will be this cycle with Republicans having an epiphany that early and mail ballots are good, not a cause for suspicion unless they need them to be. So theRepubs may be doing what has served the Dems so well: Banking votes early to almost guarantee victory.

 

GOP operative Jeremy Hughes sifted this from the data – his numbers on voters refer to general elections voted in:

…the problem for Democrats comes up when we look at the low propensity voters.

 

GOP 2 of 4 voters - 25.3% Turnout

DEM 2 of 4 voters - 20.9% Turnout

 

Republicans have a nearly 4.5% turnout advantage among voters who had missed two of the last four general elections.

 

GOP 1 of 4 voters - 23.6% Turnout

DEM 1 of 4 voters - 18.6% Turnout

 

Amongst the infrequent 1 of 4 voters,Republicans open up their largest turnout advantage of nearly 5%.

 

Then, when you look at new voters and voters who have never voted in a general election, Republicans continue to dominate.

 

GOP 0 of 4 voters - 17.8% Turnout

DEM 0 of 4 voters - 13.9% Turnout

 

Now, after all of those numbers what does this mean?

 

The Republican early vote lead will continue to grow.The GOP just has more active and interested voters and is pulling people off the couch who normally don't vote.

 

This also means that Republicans will undoubtedly have a turnout advantage in this election, which, given the voter registration numbers, basically guarantees that more Republicans will vote than Democrats.

 

Hughes probably is correct about that, but the real question if he is right is this:How many more Republicans? If it’s tens of thousands, even a big win among indies for Dems almost surely won't be enough.

 

I said earlier that 2022, even though a non-presidential year and with lower turnout, may be more instructive. TheDem vote came in much later and Election Day losses were offset by mail ballots dropped at election locations. Hello, Culinary Union and Democratically aligned nonprofits.

 

At least that’s what the Dems are hoping will be the case. My point is that we don’t know yet if that is what’s happening or will happen.I think there are still about a million votes to be cast.

 

So far about 57 percent of the votes have been cast by mail and 43 percent in person. The Rs are winning because they have a 25-point lead in in-person and the Dems only have a 12 percent lead in mail. As I said, if the Dems can’t change those margins and/or that mix, they are in big, big trouble. And they have to hope for maximum GOP cannibalization of Election Day voters vs what Hughes talked about: low-propensity GOP voters turning out.

 

Week One of the two weeks of early voting ends tomorrow.

 

In 2022, the Dems had a 21,000-ballot lead after Week One. In 2020, the Dems had about a 50,000-ballot leadafter one week.

 

Instead, they are going to be well behind. The volume of mail ballots is down, too, which is either a concern or an opportunity for the Dems. About 450,000 mail ballots were cast in Clark four years ago – only about a third of that number have been counted so far, and the total could get to half a million this year. Or not. Need to keep an eye on those numbers.

 

The Dems almost always do better in the second week, and they need to in 2024, not to build an insurmountable lead, as they have in the past, but to stay in the game. I don’t know of any smart Dem who thinks this is going to be anything but a slog and a 50-50 race possibly decided by a few thousand votes.

 

What they don’t say is this: That may be a best-case for them at this point, to be that close.

Video has emerged from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, showing what appears to be an ELECTION WORKER, opening mailed-in Ballots and, if they're for Trump, TEARING THEM UP.

 

At the very instant the video begins, a man's voice can be heard saying "Bucks County."

 

In the video, a small "Post-it" note can be seen with the name "Yardley Borough."

 

Here is the actual video of a black male, opening mailed-in Ballots, seeing they are for Donald Trump, and tearing them up while saying "Fuck Donald Trump" in a foreign accent.

WHERE DID THIS HAPPEN?

 

Ballots in Pennsylvania are printed to be mailed in to their county office. According to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Voting and Election Information website (HERE) the County office address where these Ballots would have been mailed to - and presumably where this man is located.

Since the man in the video is standing above a tray of mailed-in Ballots, it seems logical to conclude the man is an official with Bucks County, PA and it also seems logical that the Ballots he is tearing-up are located inside the building at the address shown above.

 

Since only government workers would have access to a tray full of mailed-in Ballots, it seems logical that the Government Employees of Bucks County are doing this.

 

It shouldn't be too hard to focus on those employees who have skin color matching that which is seen in the video, for direct confrontation.

 

The man's vocal accent is also likely unique and will help narrow down who it is.

 

Pennsylvania is presently governed by lowly, sniveling, Democrat scum, and the police hired by such scum are also likely to be scum themselves because birds-of-a-feather flock together. As such, it seems the public has a better chance of being struck by lightning than having the police do anything about this criminality.

As Kremer notes, “Raffensperger sent an email, in a private capacity, that went to a list of trial lawyers across Georgia soliciting $5 million by November 1st to help in his effort for a 501(c)4 called “Election Defense Fund”, asking lawyers to donate or contact him via his private gmail account & personal cell phone number.”

 

In the email, Raffensperger claimed that “Election deniers and conspiracy theorists have taken their anger to new levels, employing a variety of tactics including intimidation, legal challenges, and rule changes. In Georgia they have threatened, harassed, and sued election officials. And as you know, most recently the Georgia State Election Board was taken over by three individuals who have pledged to put partisanship over sworn duty.”

Some 13,000 light-years away toward the southern constellation Pavo, the globular star cluster NGC 6752 roams the halo of our Milky Way galaxy. Over 10 billion years old, NGC 6752 follows clusters Omega Centauri, 47 Tucanae, and Messier 22 as the fourth brightest globular in planet Earth's night sky. It holds over 100 thousand stars in a sphere about 100 light-years in diameter. Telescopic explorations of NGC 6752 have found that a remarkable fraction of the stars near the cluster's core, are multiple star systems. They also reveal the presence of blue straggle stars, stars which appear to be too young and massive to exist in a cluster whose stars are all expected to be at least twice as old as the Sun. The blue stragglers are thought to be formed by star mergers and collisions in the dense stellar environment at the cluster's core. This sharp color composite also features the cluster's ancient red giant stars in yellowish hues. Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

If a Dem leader in those cities and states would have said, "We need help from the Federal Government", Trump would have then quickly put those riots down, but he did not fall for their trap.

Instead, he let the Dem leadership actually take the blame for not determining that their Dem cities needed help.

Trump ran the government the way it was supposed to be ran: Let local and state governments and leaders determine the legitimacy of the crisis, and allow them to ask the Fed gov for extra help if needed.

Reductio ad Hitlerum: 60 years of Democrats falsely calling the Republican nominee a fascist

It’s been an integral part of the Democratic political playbook, utilized almost as much as calling the Republican nominee a racist. Yet, somehow, after each warning, the Third Reich has yet to materialize in the United States. This includes when former President Donald Trump was president from 2017-2021. Despite six decades’ worth of Democratic warnings of impending fascist doom failing to come true, it has never prevented the left-wing party from engaging in Reductio ad Hitlerum.

 

However, the constitutional republic’s appointed candidate for president, Vice President Kamala Harris, made headlines Wednesday when she stated that she believed Trump was a fascist. This tired, old, baseless trope lacks insight and intelligence. Most importantly, it is dishonest.

 

Consider the facts.

 

Let’s start with former Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ) and his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in 1964. Over 50 years before Trump decided to run for president, celebrities, journalists, politicians, and other politicos warned that the GOP presidential nominee was an extreme fascist who would cause considerable harm to the country. Goldwater, who served as a pilot during World War II, was likened to Nazis and fascists for promoting conservatism during his presidential campaign.

 

For example, the then-Democratic governor of California, Edmund Gerland “Pat” Brown, remarked about Goldwater’s acceptance speech, claiming it “had the stench of fascism. All we needed to hear was Heil Hitler.” It should be noted that Goldwater served as a pilot in the military during WWII. Brown didn’t have any military service at all.

 

Other comments about Goldwater included a scathing rebuke from civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

 

“We see dangerous signs of Hitlerism in the Goldwater campaign,” King said.

 

Baseball legend Jackie Robinson, who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier, said of Goldwater’s speech, “I would say that I now believe I know how it felt to be a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.”

 

The then-mayor of San Francisco, the city where the 1964 Republican National Convention was held, said the GOP “had Mein Kampf as their political bible.”

 

The despicable comments continued the following election in 1968. Then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and Democratic nominee for president, remarked about the election, “If the British had not fought in 1940, Hitler would have been in London, and if Democrats do not fight in 1968, Nixon will be in the White House.”

 

Former President Richard Nixon won the election, but the Hitler, Nazi, and fascist comparisons never stopped. For example, in 1970, a political poster featured an image of Adolf Hitler, wearing a Nazi armband, holding a mask of Nixon.

 

Meanwhile, a news article from October 1972, available for viewing on the CIA’s website, referred to “Nixon’s Nazis” as part of commentary criticizing Nixon. Then there is a photograph from October 1973 of someone wearing a Nixon mask with a crown, giving the Nazi salute.

 

Gerald Ford followed Nixon as president and as a Republican who was called a fascist. In 1974, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union criticized Ford for his lack of punitive action against Nixon.

 

“If [President] Ford’s principle had been the rule in Nuremberg,” he said, “the Nazi leaders would have been let off, and only the people, who carried out their schemes, would have been tried,” the ACLU said at the time.

 

Additionally, in the Gerald Ford Library Museum, a document describes an interaction with a woman in 1975 in which Ford was harassed and repeatedly called a “fascist” and a “fascist pig.”

 

Surely, over a decade of accusations and allegations of fascism never coming to fruition would stop Democrats from calling Republicans Nazis, fascists, or comparing them to Hitler, right?

Former President Ronald Reagan was the next target in the Democrats’ line of unsubstantiated accusations of fascism.

 

Rep. William Clay (D-MO) stated that Reagan wanted to “replace the Bill of Rights with fascist precepts lifted verbatim from Mein Kampf.”

 

The Los Angeles Times cartoonist Paul Conrad drew a panel depicting Reagan plotting a fascist putsch in a darkened Munich beer hall. Harry Stein (later a conservative convert) wrote in Esquire that the voters who supported Reagan were comparable to the “good Germans” in “Hitler’s Germany.”

 

American Enterprise Institute scholar Steven Hayward highlighted another incident in which the intelligentsia and academia also contributed to the Reagan fascist comparisons when John Roth, a Holocaust scholar from the Claremont Colleges, commented about Reagan’s election:

 

“I could not help remembering how 40 years ago economic turmoil had conspired with Nazi nationalism and militarism — all intensified by Germany’s defeat in World War I​—to send the world reeling into catastrophe. … It is not entirely mistaken to contemplate our postelection state with fear and trembling.”

 

Former President George W. Bush might have been the Republican politician who faced the harshest and most vile criticism before Trump. Bush was regularly called every dirty name in the book, from racist to Nazi to fascist to war criminal. There are many examples of linking Bush to Hitler, Nazis, and fascists.

 

In 2012, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), the same Romney so many Democrats love today, was also linked to Nazis and fascism. One delegate from Kansas (at the time) said Romney was a habitual liar and likened him to Hitler“while criticizing the accuracy of Romney’s campaign talking points.”

 

A chairman of the California Democratic Party compared then-vice presidential candidate (and eventual former Speaker of the House) Paul Ryan, again, the same Ryan loved by many Democrats today, to Nazi filmmaker and propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

 

Does any of this sound familiar? It should. It is the same line of attacks Democrats have used against Trump.

 

Democrats first warned Trump was a fascist in 2015 and 2016. They repeated the attacks throughout his presidency and reelection campaign in 2020 and are resurrecting it today.It’s indicative of how vile and divisive the Democrats are, all the while claiming and portraying themselves as civil and respectful. It’s nonsense.

EXCLUSIVE: House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., is criticizing former Attorney General Loretta Lynch for reportedly lobbying the Pentagon on behalf of a company known as DJI, which makes Chinese military tech.

 

"It is disgraceful but unsurprising that Barack Obama’s former Attorney General Loretta Lynch is now working on behalf of a Communist Chinese drone company that the Department of Defense has identified as a Chinese military company," Stefanik told Fox News Digital.

 

"Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch is lobbying the DOD to request they remove DJI from this list so the Communist Chinese company can operate with impunity in America. U.S. government officials, both past and present, should be working to ban these Communist Chinese spy drones and bolster the domestic drone industry, not advocating on behalf of a Chinese military company and the Chinese Communist Party."

Lynch, who served under former President Barack Obama, is now a partner at law firm Paul, Weiss. She specializes in congressional investigations and national security, among other issues, according to her webpage on the company site.

 

Stefanik’s comments come after a report earlier this week suggested Lynch could be leveraging her government connections to aid a Chinese government-linked company.

Reuters reported that she wrote a letter to the Pentagon last summer on behalf of one of her clients, SZ DJI Technology Co., asking for them to be removed from the DOD's list of Chinese military companies.

 

Fox News Digital reached out to Paul, Weiss and the Pentagon for confirmation.

 

The report noted that it’s legal for lawyers to advocate for foreign clients without mandatory public disclosure of their work.

DJI is one of the largest producers of drones in the world. The U.S. Treasury placed investment restrictions on it in December 2021, accusing it and seven other companies of actively supporting surveillance and repression efforts against Uyghurs.

 

Meanwhile, in Congress, a House GOP-led effort could restrict DJI’s activity in the U.S. even further. Stefanik and House China select Committee Chair Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., are leading a bill called the Countering CCP Drones Act, which would ban DJI from operating on U.S. communications infrastructure.

Sols 4341-4342: A Bumpy Road

After Curiosity’s busy weekend, the team is ready for another day of planning.

We are able to take advantage of the Earth-Mars time offset to full plan on both sols of our plan today.

For this plan, I served as Mobility Rover Planner, and planned Curiosity’s drive.

 

The first sol begins with some remote science. In this block, there is a ChemCam LIBS and Mastcam joint observation of “Ewe Lake,” to look for variation across the different layers in the rock.

There is also a ChemCam RMI and a Mastcam of the “Olmstead Point” target, to see if there are chemical differences that make it darker than the surrounding rocks.

Mastcam also is taking a stereo image of “Depressed Lake” (in order to see if this loose block belongs to the Stimson or the Sulfate units) and an image of the ChemCam AEGIS target the rover automatically found after the last drive.

 

After a nap, Curiosity wakes up to do some contact science on the “Chuck Pass” target, which is a piece of bedrock with laminations and nodules.

We perform DRT brushing, MAHLI, and APXS observations of this rock before stowing the arm so we can be ready to drive on the second sol.

In the late afternoon, to take advantage of the lighting conditions, we have another short set of Mastcam imaging — an atmospheric sky column observation and a stereo mosaic of “Fascination Turret” from this new angle.

 

The second sol also kicks off with some remote sensing. We follow up the contact science with ChemCam LIBS and Mastcam of Chuck Pass.

ChemCam also takes an RMI looking east back to the area of the white sulfur stones below “Whitebark Pass” to get yet another viewing angle.

There is also some atmospheric imaging, Navcam deck monitoring (to see how the dust is moving around on the rover’s deck) and a large dust devil survey.

 

After the imaging, we are ready to drive. This terrain has been very tricky.

While the slopes are not steep, this is a very rocky area, as you can see in the image, making finding a safe path difficult.

We don’t only need to worry about driving over things that are too big or too sharp, but we also have to make sure not to scrape the wheels along the side of a rock or steer them into a rock, making them wedge and stall.

 

It also means that we do not have good stereo data out very far because the rocks block our view.

The last complication is that we have to drive backwards — otherwise, the rover hardware will block Curiosity's view of Earth during the time we want to send her the new plan.

We also take additional frames to be sure we can find the best path for the next drive. With all this, we ended up being able to drive about 32 meters today (about 105 feet).

After a short diversion to get around a steering hazard, we were able to drive a fairly straight route along the path to our next major imaging stop.

After the drive, we have our normal post-drive imaging, including a twilight MARDI image.

 

We have been lucky so far on this terrain and been able to successfully complete our recent drives. Hopefully this drive will also be successful!

New Report Shows NASA’s $75.6 Billion Boost to US Economy

NASA’s work, including its Moon to Mars exploration approach, is advancing science and technology for the Artemis Generation, while also driving significant economic growth across the United States, the agency announced Thursday.

 

In its third agencywide economic impact report, NASA highlighted how its Moon to Mars activities, climate change research and technology development, and other projects generated more than $75.6 billion in economic output across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., in fiscal year 2023.

 

“To invest in NASA is to invest in American workers, American innovation, the American economy, and American economic competitiveness,” says NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“Our work doesn’t just expand our understanding of the universe — it fuels economic growth, inspires future generations, and improves our quality of life.

As we embark on the next great chapter of exploration, we are proud to help power economic strength, job creation, scientific progress, and American leadership on Earth, in the skies, and in the stars.”

 

Combined, NASA’s missions supported 304,803 jobs nationwide, and generated an estimated $9.5 billion in federal, state, and local taxes throughout the United States.

The study found NASA’s Moon to Mars activities generated more than $23.8 billion in total economic output and supported an estimated 96,479 jobs nationwide.

For investments in climate research and technology, the agency’s activities generated more than $7.9 billion in total economic output and supported an estimated 32,900 jobs in the U.S.

 

Additional key findings of the study include:

 

  • Every state in the country benefits economically through NASA activities. Forty-five states have an economic impact of more than $10 million. Of those 45 states, eight have an economic impact of $1 billion or more.

  • The agency’s Moon to Mars initiative, which includes the Artemis missions, generated nearly $2.9 billion in tax revenue. These activities provided about 32% of NASA’s economic impact.

  • The agency’s investments in climate change research and technology generated more than $1 billion in tax revenue.

  • Approximately 11% of NASA’s economic impacts are attributable to its investments in climate change research and technology.

  • NASA had more than 644 active international agreements for various scientific research and technology development activities in the 2023 fiscal year. The International Space Station, representing 15 countries and five space agencies, has a predominant role in the agency’s international partnerships.

  • In fiscal year 2023, NASA oversaw 2,628 active domestic and international non-procurement partnership agreements, which included 629 new domestic and 109 new international agreements, active partnerships with 587 different non-federal partners across the U.S., and partnerships in 47 of 50 states.

  • NASA Spinoffs, which are public products and processes that are developed with NASA technology, funding, or expertise, provide a benefit to American lives beyond dollars and jobs. As of result of NASA missions, our fiscal year 2023 tech transfer activities produced 1,564 new technology reports, 40 new patent applications, 69 patents issued, and established 5,277 software usage agreements.

  • Scientific research and development, which fuels advancements in science and technology that can help improve daily life on Earth and for humanity, is the largest single-sector benefitting from NASA’s work, accounting for 19% of NASA’s total economic impact.

A growing number of top Democrats tell us privately they feel Vice President Harris will lose — even though polls show a coin-toss finish 11 days from now.

 

Why it matters: Democrats admit they tend to be hand-wringing, bed-wetting, doomsdayers. But what's striking is how our private conversations with Democrats inside and outside her campaign reveal broad concern that little she does, says — or tries — seems to move the needle.

 

This is afterDemocrats spent $1 billion — nearly twice as much as Republicans — over the past three months to polish her image and soil former President Trump's. Trump and allied committees raised about half Harris' total, $92 million, from Oct. 1 to 16, the N.Y. Times reports this morning (gift link).

 

• And this is after Trump's cringy 40-minute onstage sway to '80s music, his threats to target "enemies within," calling his opponent "retarded" and "sh*t" — and having his former White House chief of staff say he's fascist and talked admiringly of Hitler. (A new Harris ad uses audio from the New York Times interview with the former aide, retired U.S. Marine Gen. John Kelly).

Between the lines: We're not saying Harris is losing or will lose. An earlier "Behind the Curtain" column spelled out why this is toss-up America.

 

• Our reporting simply reflects scores of conversations with people close to Harris and intimately involved in swing-state races, including officials inside her campaign and top Biden administration officials.

• Harris' rhetorical journey has mirrored Democratic moods — from "joy" over the summer to darkness this week, when she painted Trump as a dangerous fascist.

What we're hearing: In a troubling sign for the campaign, top Democrats are already starting to point fingers at who'd be more responsible for a Harris loss — President Biden for dragging his feet, or Harris herself. "Going down?" a top Democratic official texted.

 

• Democrats fear she has made too many different cases against Trump, and still hasn't fully revealed herself to voters, who crave to know more.

• "She is who she is," one longtime Democratic strategist said. "Let's hope it's enough."

Democrats say Harrisfaces a maddening double standard, as Trump threatens to jail adversaries and strip broadcast licenses. "He gets to be lawless. She has to be flawless," CNN senior political commentator Van Jones said this week.

• Stunning stat: The Trump campaign alone has spent more than $30 million on trans-focused ads (including one in Spanish) in the past 36 days, according to AdImpact data.

Top Republicans, in private conversations, seem shockingly confident, given the consistent 50-50 polls. They talk in granular detail about White House jobs, and discuss policy playbooks for '25.

 

• Reflecting the bravado, Dan Scavino, Trump's longtime close aide and ghost tweeter, refers to the 45th president as "45–47," and wrote last week on Trump's Truth Social Platform: "I have ZERO interest in working with anyone who is a former colleague that disappeared upon our departure from the White House—and was no where to be found when DJT announced his candidacy on 11/15/22, or was silent throughout 2023. STOP CALLING. STOP EMAILING. STOP TEXTING——YOU'RE NOT HEARING BACK FROM ME."

The big picture:A common gripe among high-level Dems is that Harris does a nice job explaining why people shouldn't vote for Trump — but struggles to crisply explain why they should vote for her. In other words, she's a strong prosecutor — but struggles as a public defender.

 

• Democratic insiders loved a line Harris used in the CNN town hall on Wednesday night, and sharpened Thursday night outside Atlanta in Clarkston, Georgia: "Just imagine the Oval Office in three months. … It's either Donald Trump in there stewing — stewing! — over his enemies list, or me, working for you, checking off my to-do list." The campaign even socialized a 15-point "Kamala Harris' to-do list."

• "Better late than never," a top Democrat told us. Another leading Democrat said: "It's good. We're not dead yet."

Zoom in:Democrats once felt very good about Nevada, a state Biden won in 2020. But early voting has them panicked. Jon Ralston, the top Nevada election expert, writes that the surge in early rural Republican voting — a "rural tsunami" — is ominous for Harris: "There is no good news in these numbers for Dems."

 

•Pennsylvania continues to worry Harris, despite Biden winning there in 2020. Among the seven swing states, it's the one campaign insiders think she absolutely has to win, with signs of GOP momentum in the state's Senate race.

Reality check: Harris inherited a very tough hand. Establishing and executing a campaign for president starting just 3½ months before an election is unprecedented in modern politics.

 

• Besides Biden being unpopular, inflation has been the incumbent killer globally. Polls and election results in Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and South Korea all show this anti-incumbent tide.

The bottom line: We can't ignore the reality that no matter what Harris says or does, this country has never elected a woman president and only once elected a Black president. It's never elected a Black woman. Toss in broad concerns about immigration and inflation, and it's a lot to overcome, her advisers say.

I watch a lot, but I have prepared for hard times as well, doing what I can to better myself and family life, becoming more self-sufficient on the homestead. One brigade was transferred to Sumy Region after staging a mutiny in the Donetsk People’s Republic, according to a Ukrainian officer

 

Ukrainian servicemen are increasingly refusing to follow orders and fleeing their positions, accusing their leadership of assigning them suicide missions, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported on Monday, citing several Ukrainian officers.

 

The outlet claimed that soldiers from four brigades fighting near the besieged settlement of Kurakhovo in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic have claimed that “the future of the war is bleak for their interests because there are not enough replacements.”

 

“Why are we retreating? Because we have no rotations, we don’t rest, we are demoralized,” one officer told the outlet, adding that there is a growing problem of Ukrainian soldiers fleeing their positions.

 

“I had a friend, we called him England. He fought the entire war on the front line, in Robotino, Soledar, Kherson… He was exhausted, he couldn’t take it anymore and the commanders didn’t give him a break. A few days ago he left, just like that,” the officer said.

 

A Ukrainian sergeant who goes by Churbanov also told the Spanish outlet that the shortage of soldiers had become the biggest problem facing the Ukrainian military, noting that servicemen often have to spend three months in their positions without rest or rotation.

Another serviceman, identified as Alexander, who serves in the Territorial Defense Forces (TRO), also told El Pais that at one point the 116th TRO brigade near Kurakhovo staged a mass rebellion and refused to follow orders. After that, the whole brigade was supposedly transferred to Sumy Region, from where Kiev launched its incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region, according to the officer.

 

A source within Russia’s security services has also confirmed to the TASS news agency that Ukraine’s 116th TRO brigade had indeed been transferred to participate in the Kursk incursion as punishment for its mutiny. According to a source cited by the outlet, Kiev was trying to “somehow correct the situation in Kursk Region at the expense of the already demoralized Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers.”

 

Alexander also told El Pais that there had been a high-profile case earlier this month where 100 soldiers of the 123rd TRO Brigade abandoned their positions near Ugledar several days before the city was captured by Russian forces. The officer explained that they did this to “announce that without sufficient training and weapons they were being assigned to a suicidal defense,” according to El Pais.

 

Moscow has long characterized the hostilities in Ukraine as a US-initiated proxy war against Russia in which Ukrainian soldiers were being expended as “cannon fodder” with the complicity of their government.

It's becoming more clear with each passing day that Republicans' greatest strength in turnout resides in the Sun Belt so far.

 

In both Arizona and Nevada, Democrats are pulling more voters from their reliable pool (3/3 general election voters) while Republicans are getting more voters from everywhere else.

 

As time passes and turnout rises, Democrats are left with an increasing share of new and low-frequency available voters, while Republicans still have a sizable portion of their 3/3 waiting in the wings.

 

In Clark County, it's about as drastic as one could draw it; Democrats cannot pull away from Republicans in the early vote because while Democrats have a 75k registration advantage in low and no-frequency voters, the raw turnout in these buckets is nearly the same between the parties.

 

Both are burning through the same rate of the 3/3 voters, but eventually,Democrats will need to find a way to get their new voters to vote.

 

Otherwise, their registration advantage in Clark can never be realized.

Human Adaptation to Spaceflight: The Role of Food and Nutrition

The latest book marks our third effort to review available literature regarding the role of nutrition in astronaut health.

In 2009, we reviewed the existing knowledge and history of human nutrition for spaceflight, with a key goal of identifying additional data that would be required before NASA could confidently reduce the risk of an inadequate food system or inadequate nutrition to as low as possible in support of human expeditions to the Moon or Mars.

We used a nutrient-by-nutrient approach to address this effort, and we included a brief description of the space food systems during historical space programs.

 

In 2014, we published a second volume of the book, which was not so much a second edition, but rather a view of space nutrition from a different perspective.

This volume updated research that had been published in the intervening 6 years and addressed space nutrition with a more physiological systems-based approach.

 

The current version is an expanded, updated version of that second book, providing both a systems approach overall, but also including details of nutrients and their roles within each system.

As such, this book is divided into chapters based on physiological systems (e.g., bone, muscle, ocular); highlighted in each chapter are the nutrients associated with that particular system.

We provide updated information on space food systems and constraints of the same, and provide dietary intake data from International Space Station (ISS) astronauts.

 

We present data from ground-based analog studies, designed to mimic one or more conditions similar to those produced by spaceflight.

Head-down tilt bed rest is a common analog of the general (and specifically musculoskeletal) disuse of spaceflight.

Nutrition research from Antarctica relies on the associated confinement and isolation, in addition to the lack of sunlight exposure during the winter months.

Undersea habitats help expand our understanding of nutritional changes in a confined space with a hyperbaric atmosphere.

 

We also review spaceflight research, including data from now “historical” flights on the Space Shuttle, data from the Russian space station Mir, and earlier space programs such as Apollo and Skylab.

The ISS, now more than 20 years old, has provided (and continues to provide) a wealth of nutrition findings from extended-duration spaceflights of 4 to 12 months.

We review findings from this platform as well, providing a comprehensive review of what is known regarding the role of human nutrition in keeping astronauts healthy.

 

With this latest book, we hope we have accurately captured the current state of the field of space food and nutrition, and that we have provided some guideposts for work that remains to be done to enable safe and successful human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit.

Organized by the American Astronautical Society in collaboration with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, the annual symposium gathers leaders from across government, industry, policy, and academia to discuss the current landscape of space exploration and chart a path forward amid the challenges that lie ahead.

 

The theme of this year’s event is “Expanding Exploration: From Vision to Reality,” focusing on NASA’s and Marshall’s plans for the future and the broader discourse about exploration and discovery, technology, the workforce, and other elements of the space ecosystem.

Marshall Center Director Joseph Pelfrey will deliver opening remarks on Oct. 28, followed by panels on Artemis, artificial intelligence, and workforce development.

NASA Deputy Associate Administrator Casey Swails will deliver a keynote address to close out the first day.

 

Panels on, Oct. 29, will focus on space nuclear propulsion, science, and lunar logistics and mobility.

NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free welcomed the Republic of Cyprus as the latest nation to commit to the responsible use of space for humanity on Wednesday, marking 46 signatories to date.

 

“We applaud Cyprus’ commitment to the Artemis Accords, which will enhance the country’s engagement with NASA and the international community,” said Free, who participated virtually.

“By joining 45 other country signatories in this effort, Cyprus will help play a role in implementing the accords and exploration that is open, responsible, transparent, and peaceful for the benefit of all.”

 

Nicodemos Damianou, Cyprus’ deputy minister of research, innovation, and digital policy, signed the Artemis Accords during a ceremony in Nicosia, Cyprus. James O’Brien, assistant secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs for the U.S. Department of State, also attended the event.

 

“Today marks a significant milestone for Cyprus as we officially sign the Artemis Accords,” said Damianou.

“As we embark on this exciting journey, we reaffirm our commitment to a safe and responsible space exploration, as well as our strong belief in the importance of international cooperation in ensuring space is utilized to the benefit of all humanity.

Cyprus, an European Union member state, is capitalizing on its geostrategic location between three continents, and aspires to play an integral role in the international space community.”

 

The signing with Cyprus comes on the heels of an Artemis Accords meeting in Milan earlier this month with dozens of signatory countries, including the United States.

 

In 2020, NASA, in coordination with the U.S. Department of State and seven other initial signatory nations, established the Artemis Accords, which identified an early set of principles promoting the beneficial use of space for humanity.

The Artemis Accords are grounded in the Outer Space Treaty and other agreements including the Registration Convention, the Rescue and Return Agreement, as well as best practices and norms of responsible behavior that NASA and its partners have supported, including the public release of scientific data.

 

The commitments of the Artemis Accords and efforts by the signatories to advance implementation of these principles support the safe and sustainable exploration of space.

More countries are expected to sign in the coming days and weeks ahead.

In Pennsylvania, Republicans are racing to the finish line in new requests and daily returns, closing the gap on Democratic margins in both categories.

 

There was a time two weeks ago when the Democratic return rate edge ballooned to 9% over Republicans, but it has now been halved. This is much more a product of "just wait" than anything.

 

Allegheny, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties had ballots in the hands of voters while most other counties did not, and as returns came in, they raced to the front.

 

Now, these counties have already reported 75% of the total ballots they're expected to, and with eight more reports coming …there's very little left outstanding, while rurals and suburbs have a much larger share of outstanding ballots.

 

With an expected large # of requests coming from R's Monday, the return edge won't move very much on the next report, but starting Tuesday, it will work quickly toward zero (and may flip when we're all said and done).

 

This is nothing more than a state that typically has a very close return rate gap between parties being wonky.Ballots were sent to voters on a very different schedule to create the appearance of a D enthusiasm gap earlyand an R enthusiasm gap down the stretch.

 

Neither is true from a return rate point of view. Voters are returning ballots as they receive them.

“The gender gap in this election matters beyond politics and portends significant problems for the nation.”

I don’t agree. The problems are there. Women are 50% more likely to get into college and men are 9 times as likely to be in prison.The media and the government repeatedly try to emasculate men as they want to turn us into drones for these queen bees. The gender gap merely shines light on the problem.

I saw the ad, blinked twice, and threw all my razors into the trash.

One less worry, one less set of liberal corporate executives to support. I trim the beard about once a month.

Gillette got off easy. Need I delve once again into the Bud Light catastrophe? Why not? It’s fun.

You may recall that socialite Alissa Heinerscheid took over as the FIRST WOMAN vice president of the brand.

She also said, “We had this hangover, I mean Bud Light had been kind of a brand of fratty, kind of out-of-touch humor, and it was really important that we had another approach.”

Two days later, she solved the problem of too many frat bros quaffing her beer. She signed Dylan Mulvaney up as a spokesman-pretending-to-be-a-spokeswoman and voila! No more frat bros hogging all the beer. Sales dropped and she became the FIRST WOMAN vice president of the brand to be fired.

Having learned nothing from Gillette or Bud Light, Democrats plunged forward into the Big Muddy of their War on Men this year. In October, it finally dawned on them why their boots and clothes were wet.

Politico did a piece this week about the rave — Flagstock — thrown in honor of the frat bros at the University of North Carolina who protected the flag from being replaced with the Palestinian flag by supporters of the Hamas-Palestinian rape and murder of 1,200 Israelis and their allies on October 7, 2023.

Politico said, “Now, as Vice President Kamala Harris fights to win back the young-male cohort that helped propel President Joe Biden to victory over Trump in 2020, Democrats are frantically wondering what caused an erosion of support in polls compared to four years ago.

“It’s never an easy question, since the make-up of the youngest voting bloc changes with almost every election. But the answer — at least as viewed through the prism of Flagstock — seems rooted in the desire of young men for some sort of safe space from the challenges and criticisms, real or perceived, that bubble up from a culture in the midst of a gender revolution.”

Real or perceived. The press never writes that about the complaints of feminists, trannies or any of the other niche voting blocs Democrats create.

The White Dudes for Harris stunt fails because it is a top-down movement with a condescending message of you aren’t a real man if you don’t vote for a woman. I am 71. I don’t have to shave my face to prove my manhood. I don’t have to drink your beer to prove my manhood. And I certainly don’t have to vote for your communist to prove my manhood.
