Senate Democrats have jumped on the legal problems of former Trump associates and claim that those issues, along with the president’s own potential “criminal wrongdoing,” mean the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should be delayed, USA Today reported.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committee chairman, requesting that the hearing be pushed back from its scheduled Sept. 4 date.

“Given the possibility of criminal wrongdoing by the President, doubts that Judge Kavanaugh believes a president can even be investigated, and the unprecedented lack of transparency regarding this nominee’s record, we should not move forward with hearings on September 4th,” the letter read.

What are they talking about?

The Democrats are taking advantage of the recent conviction of Paul Manafort and guilty plea by Michael Cohen to argue that Trump is in no position to have his judicial nominee confirmed.

Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager, was convicted of eight felony counts of bank and tax fraud, and former Trump attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty on campaign finance violations, tax fraud and false statements to a bank.

The Cohen campaign finance violation is the only one that is connected to Trump, as Cohen said he made the payments to keep Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal quiet about alleged affairs “in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office.”

“Importantly, there is no legitimate reason for the Senate to rush this nomination and fail to perform its constitutional duty,” the letter from the Democrats read. “This is especially true, when the President, who faces significant legal jeopardy, chose the one candidate who has consistently and clearly expressed doubt as to whether a sitting president can be investigated or indicted for criminal wrongdoing.”

They are referring to an article Kavanaugh wrote in 2009 that said presidents “should be excused from some of the burdens of ordinary citizenship while serving in office” suggesting that presidents should not have to deal with criminal investigations or interviews with prosecutors while in office.

There is no indication that Republicans have any intention of moving the hearing.

I never thought anything of it but it's an odd form of entertainment and it's happening at a lot of colleges. If I wanted recruits for mind control, this is where I would start. Find college students that will volunteer and can be hypnotized and it takes a lot of guesswork out of the process. It would be a long drawn out process trying to find subjects. How would you convince hundreds of people to see a hypnotist just to see if they can be hypnotized other than doing it for entertainment?

There are secret marble bathtubs waiting to be discovered by those lucky enough to have an insider connection on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

The tubs were installed in the late-19th century. As reconstruction of the iconic Capitol Building was drawing to a close in 1858, a senator approached one of the engineers carrying a request from himself and 13 other colleagues: they wanted bathtubs. At the time, most senators camped out in boarding houses without indoor plumbing during the months Congress was in session.

As a result, six large Italian marble tubs were installed in the basement, the floor beside them covered in polished Minton tiles. By 1860, they were in full use and soon became a sought-after destination for politicians seeking a spot to relax, socialize, and write and memorize their big speeches. Senators would also share their luxurious tubs with guests, as a chance to indulge a hot soak was a rare privilege. According to the Senate’s website, one user accidentally insulted a female visitor after inviting her to go down into the basement to bathe. She reportedly fled the building.

However, the rise of indoor plumbing eventually rendered the bathtubs obsolete. By 1890, all but two were removed. They fell into disrepair and were eventually forgotten.

The two surviving tubs were rediscovered during an excavation in 1936, to much confusion. Architects and political staffers struggled to solve the mystery of the basement bathing vessels until a man named Abraham Lincoln Goodall stepped forward and offered his account of using the tubs as a boy. His memory helped historians piece together the forgotten past of the mysterious marble tubs.

Now, those who are guests of Capitol Hill staff can head down into the boiler room that houses the tubs. To get there, find the security office, wind past some twisted stairs, and go into the bathroom that has since been converted into a boiler room. Make sure you knock and check for a light. Security officers still use the running water, only now for toilets.

At the beginning of the week Hungarian universities received 24 hours from the Ministry of Human Capacities (EMMI) and the Ministry of Justice (IM) to comment on a proposed amendment, which declares that no gender studies courses can be launched in the future, HVG.hu reported on Friday.

According to HVG.hu, the part of the amendment which concerns gender studies provides no explanation whatsoever. Two universities are concerned: Hungary’s biggest state-funded university ELTE, and the Central European University, founded by George Soros.

If the amendment becomes official, it will mean that nobody can attend gender studies courses in Hungary and get a degree in the subject. HVG.hu notes that CEU offers both Hungarian and American degrees, the amendment will not affect the latter.

The Ministry of Human Capacities told HVG.hu later today that there is absolutely no interest for gender studies graduates in the Hungarian job market. EMMI added that the course is economically irrational, so they assume that it’s not launched to give the students useful knowledge, but it serves other interests.

According to the ministry, the gender studies MA takes away resources from other courses and harms the economic stability of the universities.

Christian Democratic members of the government have been criticising gender studies courses, according to them it’s an ideology, not science – HVG reminds.

After three days of operation, Washington Dulles International Airport’s biometric cameras identified a man allegedly attempting to use someone else’s passport to enter the U.S.

A D.C.-area airport’s brand new facial recognition program caught an alleged imposter trying to enter the country on a false passport, the first such detection at an airport using facial biometrics, according to a Customs and Border Protection release.

CBP officials at Washington Dulles International Airport Wednesday said the newly implemented facial biometric program identified a 26-year-old Congolese man attempting to enter the U.S. using a French passport.

The man, traveling from Sao Paulo, Brazil on Tuesday, went through the new international entry system at Dulles Airport, which brings travelers directly to a CBP officer for document inspection. While the documents are being scanned, a biometric camera analyzes the passenger’s face and compares it against records associated with the passport or other travel documents.

In this instance, the system flagged the man as a mismatch for the passport on record and he was removed for additional screening. At that time, officers said he became “visibly nervous” and an authentic ID card showing he was a citizen of the Republic of Congo was found in his shoe.

Officials said CBP is withholding the man’s name while the investigation is ongoing.

The program was in its third day of operation at the airport, having launched on Aug. 20.

“Facial recognition technology is an important step forward for CBP in protecting the United States from all types of threats,” said Casey Durst, director of CBP's Baltimore Field Office, in a statement. “Terrorists and criminals continually look for creative methods to enter the U.S. including using stolen genuine documents. The new facial recognition technology virtually eliminates the ability for someone to use a genuine document that was issued to someone else.”

The stop at IAD appears to be the first case of facial biometrics catching a suspected imposter, a CBP spokesman told Nextgov, though the agency does not track border stops—or “inadmissibility statistics”—by the kind of technology used, they said.

Other facial recognition programs advanced at 14 airports across the nation this summer, including comprehensive systems at Orlando International Airport in Florida and Mineta San Jose International Airport in California. The programs are part of an overall mandate for CBP to use biometric technologies to improve speed and security at border crossings.

The programs are also extending beyond customs to the entire air travel system. A pilot program at JFK International Airport in New York was recently expanded to integrate the system with Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.

Vietnamese website taunts Chinese drama fans with South China Sea quiz

HANOI (Reuters) - A Vietnamese website, which only works when users correctly answer a quiz about disputed islands in the South China Sea, has infuriated scores of television fans in China desperate to catch the latest episode of a popular Chinese period drama.

The drama — “The Story of Yanxi Palace” — has attracted a huge following in China for its colorful depiction of Qing Dynasty-era politics and the tale of a brave and plucky young concubine who outsmarts her rivals.

The first 56 episodes of the show are being aired for free on Chinese video streaming platform iQiyi, which holds exclusive rights to the drama. For a fee, iQiyi members can watch eight more episodes.

But a Vietnamese website somehow obtained extra episodes which have not yet been broadcast in China.

Chinese drama fans flocked to bomtan.org, which hosts online copies of Asian television dramas, only to be met with a challenge which pits patriotism against the insatiable urge to binge watch television.

The website, which did not appear to have rights to broadcast the drama, asks users to answer questions confirming their Vietnamese identity before the website loads.

“This service is for Vietnamese people only. Please answer the following questions: To which country do the Hoang Sa (Paracel Islands) belong? Vietnam, China, Philippines or Japan?”.

The only correct answer to the question, according to the website, is Vietnam.

The state Department of Human Services will create a unit to work with outside auditors and address any problems they discover, the department’s director told lawmakers Monday.

At a meeting of the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee’s Medicaid Subcommittee, Human Services Director Cindy Gillespie also apologized for not attending the panel’s last meeting, in July, in which other department officials briefed lawmakers on the department’s response to an audit that flagged reporting errors and other discrepancies related to $126 million in expenses.

“We are taking this extremely seriously,” Gillespie said. “We have a lot of work ahead.”

Some legislators complained about Gillespie’s absence from the July meeting and a meeting in April of the full committee.

“If you come to these meetings, I think you can learn a lot from them,” Sen. Linda Collins-Smith, R-Pocahontas and a vice chairman of the subcommittee, said Monday.

The discrepancies were

discovered during an annual review by legislative auditors of programs receiving federal money.

The bulk of the questioned costs resulted from reports to the federal government showing Medicaid spending amounts that didn’t match information in the department’s financial management system.

The audit also found al-

most $28 million the state could owe to the federal government because of expenses lacking proper documentation or shouldn’t have been allowed under federal rules.

Gillespie said the amount owed “will come substantially down” after the department supplies the needed documentation.

“We don’t anticipate a budget issue around it,” she said.

Although she took over as director in 2016, Gillespie said she didn’t realize until she was briefed on the audit findings several months ago the department hadn’t been correcting problems discovered in previous audits.

“I had almost nothing to say” during the meeting when she learned about the findings, Gillespie said. “I was livid.”

Next month, she said she plans to reallocate positions within the department to create an office of internal controls to make sure such findings are addressed and serve as a liaison between outside auditors and the department.

The office will include a director and two or three other staff members. It won’t require any new funding, she said.

Auditors find issues with Seneca County finances

The Board of Supervisors Tuesday heard a verbal report from Randy Shepard and Ken Pink of Bonadio, hired for the audit.

They promised to keep in close contact with Finance Officer Michael Reynolds, R-Covert, and the full board as the audit work continues and more discrepancies are uncovered and dealt with. A written report will be produced when the audit is done.

“This report will not be favorable,” predicted outgoing County Manager John Sheppard, whose last day will be Sept. 4.

Randy Shepard said when he began looking at the financial records in mid-June, County Finance Director Brandi Deeds had resigned.

“I found discrepancies and we’ve worked to reconcile them. There were issues with accounts payable and the grant money received by the county was not being reconciled back to January 2017,” he said. He said state and federal governments require such reconciliation.

The months of January and February 2017 have been reconciled and auditors are moving forward month by month, working with the Finance Department staff.

“It’s unfortunate, but I’ve done this before. We’re looking at a deadline of Sept. 30 to get much of this done. We may not meet it and I can’t promise we will, but we will try. The county may lose funding if it files too late,” Shepard said.

“We’re also looking for malfeasance and red flags. We haven’t identified any yet, but we will keep looking,” Shepard said.

Pink said auditors have removed opportunities for malfeasance and believe the risk of finding it are greatly reduced.

Reynolds asked how much past the Sept. 30 deadline the work may take.

“We will put the resources here to meet the deadline. It’s hard to say when we’ll be done after we get the information assembled. The audit team will work to reconcile these accounts, training your staff at the same time,” Shepard said.

“What do you need to reconcile? Cash accounts? Accounts payable?,” asked Lisa Hochadel, D-Waterloo, a finance committee member.

“All accounts. We want go make sure all expenditures are properly recorded in accounts where they should be,” Shepard said.

Supervisor Cindy Lorenzetti, D-Fayette, said when the 2017 and 2018 discrepancies were found, she asked Shepard

why the attorney general or state comptroller were not notified.

Shepard said the process calls for them to notify the county manager of the problems first. “If there is evidence of fraud or malfeasance, then we would go higher up,” he said.

Lorenzetti asked if the county would be fined for not filing the audit by Sept. 30. Shepard said no, but said state and federal governments could withhold funds for not meeting guidelines. She also asked how the county was paying for the additional audit work being done by Bonadio.

Sheppard said about $60,000 was budgeted for the audit, but there is more funding available in the finance department budget because of unfilled vacancies.

“What has happened since the end of 2016 to cause this chaos?,” asked board chairman Bob Shipley, R-Waterloo.

Shepard said procedures the county has been using were outdated and ineffective, with little internal controls in place. “But were they adequate in 2016?” Shipley asked.

Shepard said Bonadio had a baseline of data for 2016 to do an audit, but did not look beneath those numbers.

He said they are looking beneath the basic data for 2017 and 2018.

Shepard said information for the 2016 audit was reliable “even if it is inefficient.”

“But why did we do okay in 2016? What changed for 2017?” Lorenzetti asked.

She did not get an answer. Hochadel said Bonadio should work with the board to make changes “so this doesn’t happen again.”

In other action, the board went into executive session to discuss the “medical, financial, credit or employment history of a particular person or corporation or matters leading to the appointment, employment, promotion, demotion, discipline, dismissal, suspension or removal of a particular person or corporation.”

Sheppard’s resignation was the topic. The board met alone for about 35 minutes and then called in Personnel Director Kathy Corona, County Attorney Frank Fisher and Assistant County Attorney Christopher Folk. That closed-door session lasted another 23 minutes.

The board adjourned without taking any action, but Shipley said an interim county manager may be announced at a special board meeting Tuesday.

Board members Greg Lazzaro and Lee Davidson were absent.

Law enforcement agencies have announced a series of arrests spanning several deep south states, that police say resulted in the shutdown of a dangerous crime syndicate, and the annihilation of multiple child-sex trafficking and human trafficking rings, beginning in Iowa, and ending in the areas of Georgia, and finally South Carolina.

The first of the several trafficking rings begins with a case centering around a 16-year-old child, who we've learned was reported missing from Iowa, and was later traveling alongside a pair of criminals that the Myrtle Beach Police Department alleges were operating human trafficking, and child-sexual trafficking rings.

The young child, after being reported missing, is said to have willingly left Iowa in a vehicle traveling across multiple states with one male and one female adult, Phylicia Marie King, and 23-year-old Mark Cortez Spicer, as reported by local news affiliate Our Quad Cities.

The trio first headed eastbound out of Iowa, where they made their first stop in Chicago, Illinois, where the child was forced to perform sex acts on various men to finance the rest of the trip. That would be profitable for Mark Cortez Spicer, and his accomplice Phylicia Marie King, who took the proceeds to purchase gasoline, food, hotels, and other necessities. Little did the girl know just how deranged the trip would become.

They then headed to Nashville, Tennessee, continuing to sell the minor child for sexual exploitation, before arriving at their final destination in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

On August 16th, just around week since the child and two adults first began their journey across the nation, the Myrtle Beach Police Department began its an investigation into allegations of possible human trafficking by following a series of leads which were called in to the Department by assigning Detectives "who are specially trained in these types of cases.”
