Working from a 24th-floor office in Manhattan's Trump Tower, Felix Sater spent years trying to line up lucrative deals in the United States, Russia and elsewhere in Europe with Donald Trump's real estate organization. For much of that time, according to court records and U.S. officials, Sater also worked as a confidential informant for the FBI, and — he says — U.S. intelligence.

"I was building Trump Towers by day and hunting Bin Laden by night," Sater, now 50, told the Los Angeles Times in a phone interview from New York.

As managing director of Bayrock Group LLC, a real estate development firm, the Russian-born businessman met Trump in 2003, court records show, when Trump was looking to expand his business and branding organization around the globe. Although few projects were built, Sater worked on hotel and condominium deals with the Trump Organization through 2010 in New York, Florida, Arizona, London, Moscow and elsewhere even as he secretly helped the FBI infiltrate and take down organized crime figures, according to court records.

In January (2017), Sater and Trump's personal attorney, MICHAEL COHEN, met in a New York hotel with a UKRANIAN LAWMAKER who asked them to bring the White House a pro-Russian peace deal for Ukraine. "I was only trying to stop a war," Sater said of his role linking the lawmaker, ANDREI ARTEMENKO, with Cohen.

The New York Times, which first reported the meeting, quoted Cohen as saying he gave the envelope containing the proposal to MICHAEL FLYNN, then Trump's national security advisor, but Cohen now denies delivering it. "I acknowledge that the brief meeting took place, but emphatically deny discussing this topic or delivering any documents to the White House and/or General Flynn," Cohen wrote in an email to the Los Angeles Times. The White House has "no record" of receiving the Ukraine peace proposal, according to spokesman Michael Short. He also said that "no one in the White House" had discussed the matter with Cohen.

There is no question that Sater led a double life during the years he worked with the Trump Organization.

At his sentencing hearing, several FBI officials vouched for Sater's help. He got his biggest endorsement in January 2015 when LORETTA LYNCH was asked at her Senate confirmation hearing for U.S. attorney general why court records had been sealed in the fraud case. Sater had secretly worked with federal prosecutors and the FBI for more than 10 years, "providing information crucial to national security and the conviction of over 20 individuals, including those responsible for committing massive financial fraud and members of La Cosa Nostra" — the Mafia — according to Lynch, who had served as U.S. attorney in the Eastern District in New York.

Sheraton, Westin and other Starwood hotels are finding their religion.

Marriott International, which bought Starwood two years ago, has begun putting copies of the Bible and the Book of Mormon in the recently-acquired hotels. By year’s end, it expects to place the books in 300,000 rooms.

Marriott, whose namesake founding family is active in the Mormon church, has been putting both the Bible and the Book of Mormon in its rooms since opening its first hotel in the late 1950s. Like most major chains, Marriott doesn’t own the majority of its hotels. However, it stands out from the other companies by requiring — in franchise or licensing agreements — its 6,500 properties to have the books in each room.

It’s not a policy Marriott relishes discussing. The company declined to make an executive available to comment, but issued a statement to The Associated Press: “There are many guests who are not digitally connected who appreciate having one or both of these books available. It’s a tradition appreciated by many, objected to by few.”

Judging from lively internet discussions, however, travelers are divided on the issue. Some say they’re not bothered by seeing a Bible or a Book of Mormon in the room, and note that they’re usually tucked away in a drawer. But others say they have complained to managers and asked for the books to be removed. …

Marriott gets the Bibles for free from Gideons International, a group that donates Bibles to prisons, hospitals, hotels and other public places. The costs for the Books of Mormon are shared by the Marriott Foundation and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Marriott is alone among big hotel chains in requiring religious materials in its rooms. Hilton and IHG, which owns Holiday Inn and other brands, say they let local hotel managers decide whether to offer Bibles. Hyatt has no official policy, but says it will obtain religious texts if guests ask for them.

According to STR, a hotel data firm, the number of U.S. hotels that offer religious materials in their rooms has dropped over the last decade, to 79 percent in 2016 from 95 percent in 2006. Luxury hotels were the least likely to offer them, with just 51 percent saying they did. And urban and resort hotels were less likely to offer them than hotels in suburbs or along interstates.

The change at some of the 1,300 former Starwood hotels could come as a surprise to some guests; Marriott says those rooms haven’t had religious materials in them until now. Starwood — which was founded by Jewish businessman Barry Sternlicht in 1991 — also includes nearly a dozen brands such as the St. Regis, Le Meridien, Aloft and Four Points.

Some brands, however, are holier than others. Starwood’s 50 W hotels — one of the first chains to sell “intimacy kits” that include condoms — won’t get the books. Neither will the 140 independently owned Design Hotels, most of which are in Europe. Marriott’s youth-focused Moxy brand and its luxury Edition brand also don’t have the books in their rooms.

The St. Louis archdiocese used to own the land of the West Lake Landfill. There are a bunch of big hospitals in St. Louis too. I wonder if there could be a year-round harvest.

CONCORD, N.H. — Eleven former staffers at a prominent New Hampshire prep school have been accused of fondling, forced kissing and other sexual misconduct with students over several decades, according to two reports released on Friday.

The reports released by Phillips Exeter Academy also found that school administrators often failed to act on complaints of abuse and, in several cases, never recorded the complaints of wrongdoing in personnel files— allowing teachers to be hired elsewhere despite concerns about their behavior.

The allegations involve staffers who have since been fired, left the school or have died. Several have been named in the past by the school.

In a letter, Exeter officials apologized to the school community, including victims who have come forward and those who have remained silent.

"On the Academy's behalf, we accept full responsibility for the harm that has been suffered and for the failures of those whose responsibility it was to prevent and address such harm," Interim Principal William K. Rawson and John A. "Tony" Downer, president of the trustees, said in a letter. "We recognize the enormous violation of trust and the lasting wounds inflicted and endured."

The reports harshly criticized Exeter for mishandling many of the complaints, either by failing to investigate them or providing support to victims. It also accused administrators of trivializing complaints or leaving them out of a wrongdoers personnel file — thus allowing at least one staffer to get a job at another school in Pennsylvania where he was accused of abuse in the 1980s.

It also alleged the school had two sets of personnel files for decades — one for human resources and a confidential one held by the principal or the dean of faculty.

"Some individuals who experienced different forms of sexual misconduct at various points were not able to seek assistance or, when they sought assistance, were not treated consistently or fairly," according to one of the reports prepared by Holland & Knight "Emerging from these systemic deficiencies was a pattern of (Exeter) failing to respond to, investigate, and communicate internally regarding reported misconduct in an effective and appropriate manner and, in certain circumstances, failing to report misconduct to the appropriate authorities."

Fox’s Carlson stunned by reaction to stories on South Africa

NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News host Tucker Carlson said Friday he’s shocked his segments this week on a South African land reform policy should be considered an appeal to white nationalists — let alone spark an international incident.

Carlson argued against a proposal that would allow the South African government to seize some white-owned agricultural land, part of an effort to address inequities left over from apartheid. Whites own more than 70 percent of such farmland despite being about 8 percent of the population.

Two hours after Carlson reported on it, a prominent viewer — Republican President Donald Trump — tweeted that he asked the secretary of state to look into the issue.

The South African government then lashed out at Trump, condemning his tweet as racially polarizing.

“The government of South Africa wishes to caution against alarmist, false, inaccurate and misinformed, as well as - in some cases - politically motivated statements that do not reflect the policies and intentions of the South African government,” the government’s statement said.

“This is not an appeal to a racial group,” Carlson said in an interview on Friday. “This is an appeal to universal principles that protect all racial groups that are true regardless of people’s color. We don’t mete out justice based on what people look like.”

Carlson has become an influential figure at Fox News Channel, his success in prime-time allowing the network to absorb the loss of Bill O’Reilly following sexual misconduct charges. The media veteran, who worked at CNN and MSNBC and started the conservative website The Daily Caller, was the second most-watched figure in cable news behind colleague Sean Hannity in July.

The South African segments, though, are a reminder that his popularity extends to some white nationalists, where figures like David Duke and the website The Daily Stormer have praised his work. He’s aired repeated segments critical of immigration and multiculturalism, for instance.

One critic, Carlos Maza of the Vox website, said white nationalists applaud Carlson “not because they think he’s one of them, but because as long as he’s teaching audiences to view differences as dangerous, he’s making their job easier.”

More harshly, the Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple dubs his show “White Grievance Tonight.”

Asked about the support of these groups, Carlson said, “Joseph Stalin loved his daughter. I love my daughters. Does that make me a Stalinist? That’s such a stupid question I don’t know what to say.

“I don’t know anything about these groups,” he said. “I’ve never had any contact with them or read any of their stuff. I have no idea what they think.”

He said he doesn’t believe anyone should be rewarded or punished based upon characteristics they can’t control, and pointed out that his show Thursday had a segment critical of China for mistreating Muslims.

“It’s an argument against tribalism,” he said.

In his initial segment on Wednesday, Carlson falsely said that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had “changed the country’s constitution to make it possible to steal land from people because they are the wrong skin color.” He also said that the government had begun seizing land from people without compensation. A night later, Carlson corrected those statements without admitting error. He noted that the proposed constitutional change was being debated in parliament. No land has yet been seized, although Carlson said the government was trying to confiscate two game farms.

Trump’s tweet referred to “the large scale killing of farmers.” That’s been a story spread among some white nationalists, although South Africa officially attributes deaths among farmers to the country’s high crime rate.

Carlson’s two stories on the subject this week did not mention the killing of farmers. He said it was because of a dispute over some of the statistics involved.

In editorializing against Trump’s tweet, The New York Times criticized Carlson’s “grossly one-sided report.” …

Fox News Channel’s prime-time audience is 91 percent white, according to the Nielsen company. It’s 69 percent white at MSNBC and 57 percent at CNN.

The reports from Exeter are the latest evidence that sexual misconduct by faculty was widespread for decades at prep schools across New England, a revelation that has led to scores of lawsuits, protests from alumni and the enactment of reforms aimed at helping victims and preventing future misconduct.

Earlier this week, another New Hampshire prep school in New Hampshire, St. Paul's School, released a report detailing abuse by 20 former faculty members and administrators going back decades.

The revelations of sex abuse that prompted the Exeter investigation emerged in 2016 after news that former teacher Rick Schubart — who was named in the report — was forced to resign in 2011 after admitting sexual misconduct with several students dating to the 1970s. A month later, Steve Lewis — also in the report — was fired amid allegations he had sexual encounters with a student decades ago.

Last year, Arthur Peekel pleaded guilty to charges that he assaulted Lawrence Jenkens when Jenkens visited the school in Exeter as a youngster in 1973. Peekel left the school soon afterward and went on to teach in Illinois, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1992. He retired from Rolling Meadows High School in 2004.

The Associated Press generally doesn't name people who say they're victims of sexual abuse, but Jenkens said he wanted to discuss his case publicly.

All three were named in one of the latest reports .

The report also confirmed allegations against a staffer who forcibly kissed two students and encouraged a graduate to move closer so he could have sex with her, one who forcibly kissed and fondled a student on graduation day and a third who proposed that two different students fly with him to Europe — one so that they could go to visits prostitutes in Amsterdam.

A seventh staffer, Henry Ploegstra, was accused of inappropriate sexual contact with three students between 1966 and 1980, denied the allegations in a letter. Contacted at his Michigan home last year, Ploegstra said he did not want to comment.

In the early 80’s Upper Volta was in turmoil. It is said that mineral disputes with neighboring countries brought about great duress and so in 1985 the country of Upper Volta ceased to exist and was then named Burkina Faso during Strzok II’s term there.
