This emphatically does not rule out the shutdown trap hypothesis that I presented. It will take some time for reorganization plans to be prepared, but once they are revealed after the 30-day deadline is reached, the "shutdown furloughs" become "administrative furloughs," and the RIF layoffs are possible.

As the anonymous senior Trump administration official whom I quoted yesterday noted, in the absence of bureaucrats with time on their hands and no inclination to help the Trump agenda, a lot is getting accomplished. As that process continues, after the 30-day mark is reached, it will be possible to create a downsizing plan, identifying units that could easily get by with a fraction of their current staff, or even be reorganized out of existence.

The head of the OMB, Mick Mulvaney, currently does not have a lot of spare time, serving as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and as interim White House Chief of Staff (a 24/7 job in its own right). But if he is on board (and why wouldn't he be?), he could well designate a team to prepare quick plans for downsizing, now that the various agencies have seen how little they need so many of the furloughed bureaucrats. That would make the furloughs qualify for RIFs.

Of course, there would be a dispute on when the clock starts ticking on the 30 days – with the original "shutdown furlough" or from the date of the hypothetical downsizing plan I mention. If the latter – a delayed start of the clock ticking – then the pressure on the Democrats to cave in and end the shutdown would amp up. Imagine if Schumer and Pelosi started hearing from federal bureaucrats waiting to be RIFed if another 30 days go by. Would they be willing to say to them that it's more important to have no border barriers than for their jobs to be preserved? They would have a time bomb of layoffs of government employees, a huge Democrat constituency, affecting many individual members of the House with large numbers of federal employee constituents. I can imagine quite a few House Democrats bolting from Pelosi if she persists in the shutdown, refusing to talk or compromise.

If this plan is followed and a downsizing proposal is officially revealed, Trump either gets an end to the shutdown or gets to downsize the federal bureaucracy.

Agricultural employers say it is vital to have a legal and reliable workforce, which could require the reform of agricultural visas for short-term laborers and the adjustment of legal status for undocumented workers already in the country. The bills sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, both from California, would allow undocumented farmworkers to apply for a blue card if they have worked in agriculture for at least 100 days in the past two years, pay any fines and processing fees, and pass a law enforcement check. After three to five years, they could adjust to permanent resident status, the “green card.”

 

“Farmworker communities across the country are living and working in fear due to President Trump’s harsh anti-immigrant enforcement and deportation agenda,” said Lofgren. Feinstein said, “We must protect the families who help put food on our tables.”

 

A dozen senators and five dozen representatives, including House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler of New York and House Rules chairman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, were cosponsors of the bills. Feinstein is the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The first stop for the bills would be the Judiciary committees, which have jurisdiction over U.S. laws.

 

Workers in all types of agricultural sectors, from growing crops, tending livestock, and lumbering to packaging and processing raw commodities, would be eligible for blue cards. If they work at least 100 days a year for five years, they could apply for a green card.

 

The United Farm Workers and the advocacy group Farmworker Justice support the bill. A top Democrat in the US Congress has vowed to look into a report that US President Donald Trump ordered his personal lawyer to lie to Congress to hide dealings with Russia.

Mr Trump also supported a Cohen plan to visit Russia during the presidential campaign to meet President Vladimir Putin to jump-start the Moscow tower negotiations according to BuzzFeed, which cites two unnamed federal law enforcement officials as sources.

 

The trip never materialised, and Mr Trump has repeatedly and emphatically denied dealings with Russia during the campaign.

 

Cohen also provided Mr Trump and two of his children — Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. — regular updates about the Moscow project, the sources told BuzzFeed.

 

Cohen, who was the real estate billionaire’s right-hand-man and fixer at his umbrella company the Trump Organisation, in New York at the time, pleaded guilty last year to several charges including the violation of campaign finance laws by arranging hush payments ahead of the 2016 election to women who alleged extramarital affairs with Mr Trump.

 

Cohen also pleaded guilty to lying to Congress by stating that the Trump Moscow project ended in January 2016, long before Mr Trump became the Republican presidential nominee, when it actually extended into June 2016.

 

The New York lawyer, 52, was sentenced to three years in jail for the campaign finance violation and other charges.

 

His incarceration has been delayed while he provides support to ongoing investigations into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russia and Mr Trump’s finances.

 

Cohen is scheduled to testify to the House Oversight Committee, newly controlled by opposition Democrats, on February 7 about his work for Mr Trump.

Plot

The narrative begins just after Tom Joad is paroled from McAlester prison, where he had been imprisoned after being convicted of homicide. On his return to his home near Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Tom meets former preacher Jim Casy, whom he remembers from his childhood, and the two travel together. When they arrive at Tom's childhood farm home, they find it deserted. Disconcerted and confused, Tom and Casy meet their old neighbor, Muley Graves, who tells them the family has gone to stay at Uncle John Joad's home nearby. Graves tells them that the banks have evicted all the farmers, but he refuses to leave the area.

 

The next morning, Tom and Casy go to Uncle John's. Tom finds his family loading their remaining possessions into a Hudson Motor Car Company sedan converted to a truck; with their crops destroyed by the Dust Bowl, the family has defaulted on their bank loans, and their farm has been repossessed. Consequently, the Joads see no option but to seek work in California, described in handbills as fruitful and offering high pay.

 

The Joads put everything they have into making the journey. Although leaving Oklahoma would violate his parole, Tom decides it is worth the risk, and invites Casy to join him and his family.

US Industrial Production Jumps In December As Auto Manufacturing Surges

 

Despite the market collapse and sinking sentiment, Industrial Production rose more than expected in December (up 0.3% vs 0.2% exp), albeit with a downward revision for November. This was driven by a 1.1% MoM surge in Manufacturing output, the most since Feb 2018

 

In fact, U.S. factory production expanded in December by the most in 10 months, ending the year stronger than expected thanks to a surge in motor-vehicle output and gains across a range of other goods.

 

The data offer some relief after recent regional and national surveys suggested a worsening outlook for factories. While manufacturing is expected to keep growing, concerns over global growth and trade-war uncertainty may limit gains in 2019.

 

Production of motor vehicles increased 7.5 percent, the most since June, and other sectors with solid gains included petroleum and coal products, nonmetallic mineral products and computers and electronics. Industries with declines included machinery, textile and product mills and paper.

 

With the mass layoffs and plant closure that have hit since, we suspect this will not continue.

 

Utility output fell 6.3 percent, as warmer-than-usual temperatures reduced demand for heating.

On Thursday morning, Paul floated the idea of bypassing the House of Representatives entirely and delivers the speech from the Senate floor.

Pelosi will spend next weekend quietly tending to top party donors and political allies at a series of private events in Northern California.

 

The two-day “issues conference” starts next Friday night with a dinner for roughly 170 guests on the back lawn of Pelosi’s multimillion-dollar home in the fashionable Pacific Heights neighborhood in San Francisco.

 

The following day, Pelosi will shepherd her guests to a Napa Valley winery with buildings designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry; the speaker and her husband, investor Paul Pelosi, own a nearby vineyard worth between $5 million and $25 million, according to her annual financial disclosure report.

 

There’s nothing unusual about leaders using recess to fund- and friend-raise. Before leaving town last week, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor raked in $1.1 million for fellow Republicans at a lobbyist-heavy fundraiser on Capitol Hill.

 

And Pelosi’s staff notes that her California session will involve more than just schmoozing with the wealthy and well-connected. The speaker will lead policy discussions on health care, energy reform and the economy, among other topics. Scheduled to speak are Obama adviser David Axelrod, CNN commentator and former Clinton adviser James Carville and Mark Zandi, an economic adviser to Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign who has been providing advice to the Obama White House.

To be invited, one must have raised money for the DCCC, been a longtime friend of Pelosi’s or contributed $30,4000 to the DCCC this cycle. The maximum an individual may give to a national party committee in any one year.

 

A donation to the DCCC of that size qualifies a donor to be part of the “Speaker’s Cabinet,” a fundraising program that gives supporters expanded access to Pelosi. In addition to the annual Napa weekend, Pelosi also will personally provide at least one more private briefing for these maxed-out donors.

 

According to campaign reports filed by the DCCC, at least 170 individuals, as well as a handful of Native American tribes, reached that maximum donation threshold as of June 30. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has reportedly raised $25.9 million in 2017 through hosting 124 lavish fundraising galas across the country to boost the campaign coffers of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Herein lies the primary reason she has kept her leadership position despite her unpopularity with voters and even her own colleagues, who have lost faith in her ability to lead. In a recent survey of 20 House Democratic candidates, only one would vocally support Pelosi. This survey comes just weeks after several congressmen spoke out about the need for leadership change. “President Putin probably has a better approval rating in Georgia than Nancy Pelosi,” said David Kim, a candidate in Georgia’s Seventh Congressional District, in an interview with McClatchyDC.

 

Since the 2016 election, Pelosi has made several gaffes and contradicted the Democratic Party’s messaging as she fights to preserve the party establishment’s status quo.

 

In December 2016, she reduced calls for reform by saying in an interview, “I don’t think Democrats want a new direction.”

 

During a CNN town hall in February 2017, she condescendingly told a millennial who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders, “We’re capitalists, that’s just the way it is,” in response to a question about why Democrats don’t embrace Sanders’ policies. She went on to explain that Democrats should strive for compassionate capitalism.

 

After Georgia special congressional election candidate Jon Ossoff lost partially due to Republicans aligning him with Pelosi, several Democrats began speaking out about the need for change in party leadership. Pelosi’s abrasiveness toward progressives and Sanders supporters inspired a primary challenger, Stephen Jaffe, to face her in the 2018 Democratic primaries.

 

Recently, Pelosi’s obliviousness to the party’s problems have been even more apparent than usual. She essentially reduced the Democrats’ new platform and Better Deal slogan to a marketing campaign when she said the change is “not a course correction but a presentation correction.”

 

On July 30, she told Fox News that she is “a master legislator.” Her actions and rhetoric demonstrate that she favors maintaining her own political power and that of the Democratic establishment over entertaining the possibility that her poor leadership has been poisoning the party. “We have unity in our own party. You saw it with the fight on the Affordable Care Act in the House and in the Senate,” Pelosi insisted.

 

The only unity Pelosi has been able to achieve is with the party’s donors. In November 2016, she attended a closed door conference with donors to perform an autopsy of the 2016 election. In 2017, she has used her super PAC, the Nancy Pelosi Victory Fund, to raise money for herself and the DCCC. The fund is similar in structure to Hillary Clinton’s controversial Hillary Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee with the DNC, which Politico reported was used to essentially launder money to the Clinton campaign. So far this year, about $1.2 million has passed through the Nancy Pelosi Victory Fund. Another committee, Nancy Pelosi for Congress, has received over $1.2 million in campaign contributions in 2017. Her leadership PAC, called PAC to the Future, has received over $300,000 so far this year, including $2,500 from Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s super PAC.

 

The Washington Post reported that Pelosi racked up million-dollar fundraising hauls at “a trio of ‘Speaker’s Cabinet’ VIP events this year in San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles.” Some of the top donors listed donations of $16,200 each via employees from the investment bank Moelis & Company, private venture capital firm Ambex Venture Partners, Regis Management Investment Advising Firm, Klein Financial, Francisco Partners Private Equity Firm and DFJ Venture Capital. Max contributors and Nancy Pelosi Victory Fund donors include DNC Treasurer William Derrough, lobbyist Michael Berman, oil tycoon heirs Gordon and Ann Getty, former Bill Clinton adviser Tom Werner, billionaire George Marcus and former White House Press Secretary under Obama and now Amazon Senior VP James Carney.

 

The fact that Nancy Pelosi, one of the top Democratic Party leaders, is courting donors in the same manner that has poisoned the Democratic Party’s reputation confirms that Democrats have learned nothing from their losses. Instead of revamping the party through grassroots organizing and fundraising, Pelosi travels the country with billionaires and corporate executives. Nothing in the Democratic Party will ever change until politicians who prefers donors over voters are removed from leadership roles.

The live stream of Jamie Dimon’s address (watch below) at the NY Economic Club opens with the billionaire CEO of JP Morgan Chase pointing out a dearth of activity from American small business entrepreneurs over the last ten years since the Wall Street financial crisis:

 

“Small business formation is lower than it’s ever been in the United States in recovery. This recovery is ten years long, a little over 20 percent. It’s the most anemic recovery from a major recession we’ve ever had. It should have been 40 percent.”

 

Yeah, maybe because Wall Street financiers have been hogging up so much capital and credit since 2008 through massive federal subsidies.

 

Like the $700 billion Wall Street Bailout, the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which Nancy Pelosi and George W. Bush teamed up to help pass.

 

That is 140x more money than the border fence appropriation that has the government tangled up in a record 26-day long shutdown.

 

Maybe it’s because last year the federal government raised taxes on upper-middle-class income earners by eliminating the federal tax deduction for state and local taxes.

 

That’s why House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had to walk back promises that the Republican tax bill wouldn’t increase taxes on any Americans.

 

And this ended up being a tax increase on a stratum of income earners that those small business entrepreneurs are aiming at sliding into with a successful small business.

 

Starting a small business and really making it into something that’s truly thriving involves taking risks and venturing time, and work, and money, and energy, toward the possibility of a big payoff.

 

But tax increases like this reduce the reward for taking all of those risks and succeeding by bringing something really valuable to the market. That’s stifling to entrepreneurship.

 

And meanwhile when Wall Street banks take exorbitant risks, if they don’t pay off, the finance industry gets a big bailout from the federal government on the back of a small business.

 

Maybe it’s because of the monetary brinksmanship of the Federal Reserve bank in expanding the Adjusted Monetary Base by a factor of nearly 5x from 2008 to 2015.

 

To lend all that new money to Wall Street banks at a discount.

 

A radical experiment with a nation’s money to put it in the most charitable terms. And what you see described in the graph above by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis is one of the major reasons why so much money has bailed out of institutional finance and into cryptocurrency.

 

Which has ironically driven the creation of many small businesses by enterprising cryptocurrency engineers and entrepreneurs. In 2017 cryptocurrency startups secured nearly a billion dollars in venture capital in 300 different deals.

Boyd and the OODA Loop Discussion.

We talked about secrecy within the OODA Loop and on my run today I remembered a crucial lesson I picked up from the book, where Boyd used it on an adversary.

As he would make attacks on people’s programs and ideas in the Pentagon, he would always low-ball the negative numbers. For instance, he would generously give all figures the benefit of the doubt–using the most optimistic data for the EMT equation. And since he was right, they still turned out in the disfavor of the people supporting the wrong program. When they challenged him using the actual numbers, they actually looked worse than if they’d accepted his criticism outright.

 

This falls into about 5 of the 48 Laws. 3) Conceal Your Intentions 8) Make other people come to you–use bait if necessary 17) Keep others in suspended terror: Cultivate an air of unpredictability. And on and on…

 

The reason Boyd didn’t like von Clausewitz was because he focused too much on reducing his own “friction” instead of causing it in the enemy. Boyd was a master at doing the opposite. That’s “embracing the chaos of war.” He’s funneling uncertainty at the enemy, seemingly conceding short term victory to goad them into biting of more than they can chew. It’s like poker, make them think you’re bluffing as you bait them into a killshot. Again, by cultivating that air on unpredictability you’re making them more likely to be detrimentally timid or brashly brave; neither of which is helpful for them.

 

So I think there is a subtle difference between secrecy and obfuscation. You’re not trying to pretend that you’re not up to something. On the contrary, you want them to be aware of your strategy–just not the right one. Boyd did this perfectly, he challenged his opponents openly, but they figured he’d be fudging the numbers in his favor not theirs. He’s just begging them to call him out, begging them to overextend so he can strike where they are vulnerable. “Make them come to you,” with bait and then reveal your pocket ace.

 

Which you can use on more investigative or critical pieces. Remember never to drop everything you have at once. If you’re calling someone or an entity out, be sure to be liberal (to them) in your calculations and conclusions. That why you eliminate semantic disagreements right off the bat. And best case scenario, you get them to challenge you on your date so you can smugly remind them that upon further consideration, things are actually worse than you first portrayed.

 

“Tiger, one day you will come to a fork in the road,” he said. “And you’re going to have to make a decision about which direction you want to go.” He raised his hand and pointed. “If you go that way you can be somebody. You will have to make compromises and you will have to turn your back on your friends. But you will be a member of the club and you will get promoted and you will get good assignments.” Then Boyd raised his other hand and pointed another direction. “Or you can go that way and you can do something–for your country and for your Air Force and for yourself. If you decide you want to do something, you may not get promoted and you may not get good assignments and you certainly will not be a favorite of your superiors. But you won’t have to compromise yourself. You will be true to your friends and to yourself. And your work might make a difference. “To be somebody or to do something. In life there is often a roll call. That’s when you will have to make a decision. To be or to do? Which way will you go?”

Prominent Global Law Firm Agrees to Register as an Agent of a Foreign Principal

Civil settlement resolves Department of Justice national security inquiry into violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act

 

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP has entered into a settlement agreement with the Department of Justice, resolving its liability for violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), announced Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers.

 

According to the Agreement, Skadden acted as an agent of the Government of Ukraine within the meaning of FARA, 22 U.S.C. § 611 et seq., by contributing to a public relations campaign directed at select members of the U.S. news media in 2012. Moreover, in 2012 and 2013, Skadden received multiple inquiries from the Department’s FARA Registration Unit about its role in that campaign. A partner then at Skadden made false and misleading statements to the FARA Unit, which led it to conclude in 2013 that the firm was not obligated to register under FARA. The facts, when uncovered, showed that Skadden was indeed required to register in 2012, and, under the Agreement, it will do so retroactively.

 

“Law firms should handle inquiries from the federal government the same way they would counsel their clients to: with appropriate due diligence to ensure the honesty of their response,” said Assistant Attorney General Demers. “Skadden’s failure to do so, and reliance on only the representations of the lead partner on the matter, hid from the public that its report was part of a Ukrainian foreign influence campaign. FARA protects the integrity of the American political system by enabling Americans to consider the identity of the speaker as they evaluate the substance of the speech.” Assistant Attorney General Demers added, “The Department appreciates Skadden’s more recent extensive cooperation in the investigation of this matter, which facilitated its resolution.”

 

In addition to agreeing to register under FARA, Skadden has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury more than $4.6 million, which it received in fees and expenses for its work with Ukraine, and will ensure that it has formal, robust procedures for responding to inquiries concerning its conduct from any federal government entity and ensuring FARA compliance as to its engagements on behalf of foreign clients.

Trump had ‘naughty and nice’ list to help identify leakers

Obsessed with insiders trying to undermine him, President Trump compiled “naughty and nice” lists to help him discover which White House members were leaking to the press, according to a new memoir.

 

Cliff Sims, a former communications aide, said Trump called him into a private study outside the Oval Office to pick his brain about possible leakers in 2017, Axios reported, citing Sims’ new book, “Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House.”

 

Sims wrote: “‘Give me their names,’ (Trump) said, his eyes narrowing. ‘I want these people out of here. I’m going to take care of this. We’re going to get rid of all the snakes, even the bottom-­feeders.’”

 

The 33-year-old described the “remarkable” scene of sitting with the president of the United States “basically compiling an enemies list – but these enemies were within his own administration.”

 

Sims added in the tell-all: “If it had been a horror movie, this would have been the moment when everyone suddenly realizes the call is coming from inside the house.”

 

The president rattled off a series of names of perceived turncoats, Sims wrote.

 

“Almost no one was deemed beyond reproach—not his chief of staff, not senior aides, almost no one other than those with whom he shared a last name,” he wrote.

 

“He wanted me to help him judge their loyalty. How, I wondered, had it come to this?”

 

Finally, Sims wrote, Trump whipped out a black Sharpie and scribbled two lists on a card engraved with the White House seal.

 

“One list was people he could trust. The other was people he couldn’t, and wanted to let go,” he wrote. “The combined lists included about 15 people — 10 of them naughty, and five of them (all campaign alumni) nice.”

 

Most of the targets on the president’s “unofficial Enemies list” survived the purge, “at least for a while. But Trump seemed to revel in his new inside knowledge.”

 

In September, Axios also cited a source saying that Trump carried a list of suspected leakers.

 

“He would basically be like, ‘We’ve gotta get rid of them. The snakes are everywhere. But we’re getting rid of them,’” the source told the news site at the time.

 

“When he was super frustrated about the leaks, he would rail about the ‘snakes’ in the White House,” the source added.

Years before Edward Snowden provided documented proof that the National Security Agency was really a national insecurity agency as it was violating law and the US Constitution and spying indiscriminately on American citizens, William Binney, who designed and developed the NSA spy program revealed the illegal and unconstitutional spying.

 

Binney turned whistleblower, because NSA was using the program to spy on Americans. As Binney was well known to the US Congress, he did not think he needed any NSA document to make his case. But what he found out was:

To prevent whistle-blowing, NSA has “a program now called ‘see something, say something’ about your fellow workers."

Two-hundred thirty-three years ago, the Virginia Senate passed the Statute for Religious Freedom, which remains one of the most eloquent defenses of religious freedom ever written.

 

It states that “truth is great and will prevail if left to herself…[Truth] has nothing to fear…unless…disarmed of her natural weapons: free argument and debate.”

 

The statute protected Virginians from being compelled to attend or support any religious service or ministry or from being punished because of their beliefs.

Two Ukrainian men have been charged for their roles in a large-scale, international conspiracy to hack into the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) computer systems and profit by trading on critical information they stole.

 

In a 16-count indictment unsealed today in the District of New Jersey, Artem Radchenko, 27, and Oleksandr Ieremenko, 26, both of Kiev, Ukraine, are charged with securities fraud conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, computer fraud conspiracy, wire fraud, and computer fraud. The SEC also filed a civil complaint today charging Ieremenko along with several other individuals and entities.

 

The indictment alleges that Radchenko and Ieremenko hacked into the SEC’s Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) system and stole thousands of files, including annual and quarterly earnings reports containing confidential, non-public, financial information, which publicly traded companies are required to disclose to the SEC. The defendants and others then profited by selling access to the confidential information in these reports and trading on this stolen information prior to its distribution to the investing public.

 

“The defendants allegedly orchestrated sophisticated computer intrusions to steal non-public information from the SEC, compromising the integrity of the market and depriving honest investors of a level playing field,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. “The Department of Justice will aggressively pursue and prosecute those who attack our financial markets and seek to profit unfairly, no matter where such offenders reside.”

 

“The defendants charged in the indictment announced today engaged in a sophisticated hacking and insider trading scheme to cheat the securities markets and the investing public,” U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said. “They targeted the Securities and Exchange Commission with a series of sophisticated and relentless cyber-attacks, stealing thousands of confidential EDGAR filings from the Commission’s servers and then trading on the inside information in those filings before it was known to the market, all at the expense of the average investor.”

A federal appellate judge in Texas issued a ruling late on Jan. 17 that dismantles key talking points used by the pro-abortion movement to defend Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted baby body parts.

 

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals case dealt with a decision by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to terminate Medicaid provider agreements with Planned Parenthood affiliates in the state. The commission based its decision on a series of undercover videos released in 2015 showing Planned Parenthood executives discussing the illegal sale of aborted baby body parts.

 

When the videos were released by The Center for Medical Progress, a pro-life group, Planned Parenthood and its defenders used the same set of talking points to disparage the evidence, specifically focusing on a claim that the videos were “heavily [and] deceptively edited.” The same talking points were often parroted, without evidence, by the news media.

A thought on recent Republican actions: I've notice that several Republicans in the House and Senate are proposing bills in this new session that have no hope of getting past the Democrats. The three that immediately come to mind are:

 

  1. Abolish the IRS and go to a sales tax

  2. Defund abortion providers

  3. Restoring US sovereignty by getting out of the UN.

 

Methinks that those Republicans proposing these bills now either know of the plan to get rid of the corrupt Dems, or might have a whiff of it. So why propose them now?

 

Optics, for one. When the plan happens and the Dems get swept out of the House and Senate, these bills will already be introduced under a Democratic led House, so it would be harder for the MSM to claim the Republicans are taking advantage of the situation.

 

Second, it goes along with Sun Tzu's strike hard and fast motif. While the Dems are in chaos, and the Republicans have control, quickly pass these through before anyone figures out what is happening.

 

Hats off to POTUS and the gang. It's been a long road to get here, but if what I'm thinking is true, what a glorious ending it will be.

Criticism of the Turkish government has been voiced by civil society activists in Northern Syria concerning Turkey’s control of the River Euphrates. In recent weeks, the Turks have stopped the flow of water into Syria from the mighty river, which has its source in Turkey’s Taurus Mountains before flowing into Syria and on into Iraq. The Euphrates is the main source of water for the Northern Syrian province of Raqqa.

 

“This threatens us with a real disaster within the next few days,” said Abu Mohamed, a local activist from Raqqa. He pointed out that half of the villages in the district currently have no water available for residential use or agricultural purposes.

 

The Euphrates has three main dams within Syria: Tishreen, Euphrates and Al-Baath. The Euphrates dam is considered the most important of the three. The water level in the Euphrates Lake (formerly known as Al-Assad Lake) has dropped significantly. It is the largest man-made lake in Syria at 85km long; until recently it held more than 14.2 billion cubic metres of water. The lake and hydro-electric power station on its dam is the source of water and electricity to Raqqa and eastern Aleppo.

Trump renominates former RNC chief counsel for TVA board

 

Nearly a year after first nominating John Ryder to the Tennessee Valley Authority board, President Trump is renominating the Memphis attorney for the 9-member TVA board after the 115th Congress failed last year to confirm Ryder's appointment.

 

Ryder, a former chief counsel to the Republican National Committee from 2013 to 2017, was among nearly 200 nominations for different federal agencies Trump sent to Congress Thursday. Many of the nominations were for those previously nominated but never acted on last year because of partisan squabbles and the year-end partial government shutdown.

 

If confirmed, Ryder would serve for the next two and half years for the seat previously held by Michael McWherter, the former Democratic gubernatorial candidate and son of former Gov. Ned McWherter.

 

Trump has named four of the current seven members on the TVA board. One other position is vacant, but Trump has yet to nominate anyone for the TVA post.

US-led coalition strikes mosque in northern Syria

 

The US-led coalition hit a mosque Thursday believed to be a military command post for Daesh in northern Syria, Anadolu reports.

 

The strike “destroyed an ISIS (Daesh) command and control facility in a mosque” in Safafiyah town in Deir ez-Zor province, the coalition said in a statement, using another name for Daesh.

 

The terror organization “continues to violate the Law of Armed Conflict and misuse protected structures like hospitals and mosques, which cause a facility to lose its protected status,” it said.

 

The coalition said the strike killed Daesh terrorists “who presented an imminent threat to our Syrian partner forces.”
