China has had repeated outbreaks of Pneumonic Plague. Normally in remote areas, they QUARANTINE THE WHOLE CITY and it goes away. The most recent case of Pneumonic Plague in China was two patients at Chaoyang Hospital in Bejing in November 2019…

 

Wuhan coronavirus started in mid December 2019, by January 2020 Chinese authorities quarantined the entire city.

 

Pneumonic Plague is nearly 100% fatal.

 

Previous Pneumonic Plague Outbreaks in China

The People's Republic of China has eradicated the pneumonic plague from most parts of the country, but still reports occasional cases in remote Western areas where the disease is carried by rats and the marmots that live across the Himalayan plateau.

 

Outbreaks can be caused when a person eats an infected marmot or comes into contact with fleas carried by rats. A 2006 WHO report from an international meeting on plague cited a Chinese government disease expert as saying that most cases of the plague in China's northwest occur when hunters are contaminated while skinning infected animals.

 

The expert said at the time that due to the region's remoteness, the disease killed more than half the infected people. The report also said that since the 1990s, there was a rise in plague cases in humansβ€”from fewer than 10 in the 1980s to nearly 100 cases in 1996 and 254 in 2000. In September 2008, two people in east Tibet died of pneumonic plague.

 

An outbreak of the disease in China began in August 2009 in Ziketan Town located in Qinghai Province. The town was sealed off and several people died as a result of the disease. According to spokesperson Vivian Tan of the WHO office in Beijing, "In cases like this [in August 2009], we encourage the authorities to identify cases, to investigate any suspicious symptoms among close contacts, and to treat confirmed cases as soon as possible. In September 2010, five cases of pneumonic plague were reported in Tibet.

 

In July 2014, Chinese media reported one case found in Gansu.

 

In November 2019, two people, from the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia, were diagnosed with pneumonic plague. They are now receiving treatment in Beijing's Chaoyang District, and authorities have implemented preventative control measures.

Democrats' impeachment proceedings were completely overshadowed this week by the panic over the Wuhan coronavirus. Still, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is clearly tired of having his character repeatedly impugned by the Dems and the press claiming he hung one of his ambassadors out to dry after she purportedly resisted the administration's attempts to pressure Ukraine.

 

That frustration came to a head this week when, during a moment of pique, Secretary Pompeo launched into a rant and swore at NPR reporter Mary Louise Kelly after she wheedled him about whether he had taken concrete steps to protect former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

 

House Democrats last week released a trove of messages between Giuliani associate Lev Parnas and Connecticut Republican Congressional candidate Robert Hyde. The messages suggested that Yovanovitch might have been under surveillance before President Trump recalled her to Washington. One of the messages seems to reference a shadowy character able to "help" with Yovanovitch for "a price."

 

Kelly recounted the incident to her listeners (she is the host of "All Things Considered") while

 

After Kelly asked Pompeo to specify exactly what he had done or said to defend Yovanovitch, whom Pompeo's boss President Trump fired last year, Pompeo simply insisted that he had "done what's right" with regard to Yovanovitch, while becoming visibly annoyed.

 

Once the interview was over, Pompeo glared at Kelly for a minute, then left the room, telling an aide to bring Kelly into another room at the State Department without her recorder, so they could have more privacy.

 

Once inside, Pompeo launched into what Kelly described as an "expletive-laden rant", repeatedly using the "f-word." Pompeo complained about the questions about Ukraine, arguing that the interview was supposed to be about Iran.

 

"Do you think Americans give a f–k about Ukraine?" Pompeo allegedly said.

 

The outburst was followed by a ridiculous stunt: one of Pompeo's staffers pulled out a blank map and asked the reporter to identify Ukraine, which she did.

 

"People will hear about this," Pompeo vaguely warned.

 

Ironically, Pompeo is planning to travel to Kiev this week.

 

The questions came after Michael McKinley, a former senior adviser to Pompeo, told Congress that he resigned after the secretary apparently ignored his pleas for the department to show some support for Yovanovitch.

According to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, Washington is sending a charter flight to Wuhan on Sunday to bring home its consular staff situated in the city of 11 million people, as well as some or all of the roughly 1,000 Americans residing locally.

 

The operation was reportedly green-lit by the Chinese foreign ministry, following negotiations in recent days.

 

Chinese authorities have imposed travel restrictions on Wuhan and nearly 20 cities in Hubei Province, with nearly 50 million people quarantined. The virus β€” which causes severe flu-like symptoms β€” has killed at least 41 people since it first passed from animals to humans in December, reportedly at a food and animal market in Wuhan.

 

Chinese President Xi Jinping described the situation on Saturday as β€œgrave.” Though doctors in Wuhan have managed to treat 38 victims of the infection, its spread has accelerated, and two academicpapers published on Friday found that it can be passed on by people showing no outward symptoms of infection.

 

Outside of China, the virus has spread to the US, Australia, France, and several Asian countries, including South Korea, Japan, and Thailand. Nearly every confirmed patient had traveled from Wuhan in recent weeks.

 

As the US reportedly gears up to fly its citizens home, Russia is also in talks with Beijing to evacuate any Russians in Hubei Province, RIA reported on Saturday. No Russians have thus far been infected with the virus, the report added.

Iraqi security forces fire tear gas, live bullets amid protests

 

Jan. 25 (UPI) – Iraqi security forces moved closer to Iraq's main anti-government protest site Saturday after firing tear gas and live bullets near the location.

 

Security forces used the tactics at Khilani Square, near Baghdad's Tahrir Square, at about noon, medics said. Police also set fire to protest tents on the nearby Sinak Bridge, according to several witnesses.

 

No casualties were reported, but medics said several protesters were injured.

 

Officials reopened several roads that protesters had previously shut down amid demands for government reforms.

FBI restricts information obtained from Carter Page FISA surveillance

 

The FBI has restricted all the evidence obtained through the wiretapping of former Trump campaign staffer Carter Page. Revealed in a Jan. 7 filing by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that was made public on Thursday, the government said the bureau chose to β€œsequester all collection the FBI acquired pursuant to the Court’s authorizations” to grant a warrant and three extensions for the electronic surveillance of Page, a U.S. citizen who was suspected of acting as an agent of Russia but was never charged with any wrongdoing.

 

The filing, signed off by presiding FISA court Judge James Boasberg, further stated that the "sequester" would remain in place until the completion of a further review of the DOJ inspector general report on the Page FISA warrants and the "outcome of related investigations and any litigation." "The government has not described what steps are involved in such sequestration or when it will be completed," Boasberg wrote. "It has, however, undertaken to 'provide an update to the court when the FBI completes the sequestration.'"

 

Boasberg's filing made headlines on Thursday for showing the Justice Department conceded that there was insufficient evidence to justify the last two of four orders covering the final several months of electronic surveillance of Page during the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign. The initial order came in October 2016, and the electronic surveillance stretched into the summer of 2017 with a trio of extensions at three-month intervals. It remains unclear whether the Justice Department believes the first two orders targeting Page were similarly flawed. The watchdog report showed that FBI interviews with Steele's primary source, beginning in January 2017 after the first FISA renewal, "raised significant questions about the reliability of the Steele election reporting."

 

Following Horowitz's investigation, FBI Director Christopher Wray ordered more than 40 β€œcorrective steps” to address the watchdog's report, including 12 reforms related to the FISA process. In a Jan. 10 response to the court, Wray said he "deeply regrets" the FBI's failures in the Page FISA process and offered a timetable of reforms and training the bureau is undertaking. David Kris, a former Justice Department lawyer picked to advise the FISA court on the reform process, submitted a brief that pushed for improved communications between FBI and DOJ attorneys on FISA matters beyond what the bureau has proposed.

 

The FISA court also ordered a review of all FISA filings handled by Kevin Clinesmith, the FBI lawyer who altered a key document about Page in the process to obtain the third warrant renewal. He is now under criminal investigation by U.S. Attorney John Durham, a prosecutor from Connecticut who was tasked by Attorney General William Barr with investigating the origins of the Russia inquiry.

Northern California plane crash kills 2, injures 1

 

Jan. 24 (UPI) – A small plane crash in Northern California on Friday killed two people and injured a third person, local law enforcement said.

 

The single-engine plane crashed near a golf course in Auburn around 10 a.m. The California Highway Patrol said the wreckage was located in a back yard.

 

The crash happened about a mile away from the Auburn Municipal Airport, about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento.

 

The Placer County Sheriff's Office identified the dead as Anthony Lawrence Wright Sr., 80, and Anthony Lawrence Wright Jr., 55. The younger Wright worked for the Rancho Cordova Police Department.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard breaks ground on $200M dry dock renovation

 

Jan. 24 (UPI) – Norfolk Naval Shipyard has broken ground for the renovation of its historic Dry Dock 4, the Navy has announced.

 

The renovation is expected to cost $200 million and span nearly three years, the branch said in a press release.

 

It's intended to meet the Navy's needs for submarine overhaul during the 2020s, with the aim of supporting Ohio, Virginia and Columbia-class vessels, as well as meet other needs in the future.
