Jeffrey Goldberg is the Atlantic editor-in-chief, with whom Powell Jobs has reportedly had the closest contact in the outlet, apart from its co-owner David Bradley, who now own the minority share at the magazine. Goldberg – a former prison guard in the Israel Defense Forces – has written politically-motivated stories before. In 2002, he talked up Saddam Hussein’s supposed chemical threat to raise support for the invasion of Iraq. He described the Kurdish population of northern Iraq as hungering for US intervention, saying that George Bush’s ‘Axis of Evil’ speech “electrified” them. Seven years after the disastrous war in Iraq began, Goldberg addressed his critics in a sarcastic post in The Atlantic, titled “Yes, yes, I know I started the Iraq War.”

One of the Black Lives Matter protesters busted in a window-smashing rampage over the weekend is the son of a New York Times best-selling comic book writer whose creations inspired the show TV show “Stumptown.”

Elliot Rucka, 20, of Portland was among the eight people arrested on rioting and other charges in the spree Friday that damaged and vandalized banks, Starbucks and Duane-Reades from Foley Square up to 24th Street.

The protest — which was organized by the groups “New Afrikan Black Panther Party” and the “Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement” — escalated to a three-hour marathon of destruction that caused at least $100,000 in damages, authorities said.

At least some of the protesters arrested in the spree appear to have had come from elite backgrounds — prompting one law-enforcement source to scoff, “This is the height of hypocrisy.”

Rucka is the son of two accomplished comic book writers, Greg Rucka, a New York Times best-selling author, and Jennifer Van Meter, according to his father’s online bio.

Greg penned the comic book series“The Old Guard,”which he then adapted for a Netflix film of the same name — and co-created the “Stumptown” comic series that ABC optioned into a TV show last year.

On Friday night Black Lives Matter rioters in Rochester, New York, terrified diners as they barged into local restaurants, flipped tables, threw chairs, and screamed at random people out eating dinner for the weekend.

Pet owners beware: 3 dog foods recalled over mold byproduct levels

The pet food manufacturer Sunshine Mills has issued a voluntary recall of dog food products due to potentially high levels of aflatoxin, a byproduct of mold.

The family-owned company sold the dog food in question under the brand names Family Pet, Heartland Farms and Paws Happy Life.

The dog food was sold at retailers nationwide. The list of potentially hazardous products includes "Family Pet Meaty Cuts Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavors Premium Dog Food," "Heartland Farms Grilled Favorites Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavor," as well as "Paws Happy Life Butcher's Choice Dog Food."

A release published by the Food and Drug Administration warns the products may contain too much aflatoxin, a naturally-occurring mold byproduct that can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.

"Pets that have consumed any of the recalled products and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian," according to the release.

So far, no illnesses have been reported. However, consumers who have purchased the recalled products should stop using them and can return unused portions for a full refund.

19 Foreign Nationals Charged with Voter Fraud in Swing State North Carolina

19 foreign nationals were charged in August in North Carolina with voter fraud after voting in the 2016 elections.

The charges are the latest in an ongoing investigation conducted by ICE officials.

Nineteen foreign nationals face federal charges in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina for illegally voting in the 2016 federal elections, according to federal charges publicly announced on Wednesday. These charges are the latest indictments to result from an ongoing years-long federal criminal investigation being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Raleigh office.

DHS Leaker Who Sabotaged ICE Raids Strikes Again With Memos Declaring White Supremacists "Greatest Terror Threat"

Politico managed to find several draft copies of an annual threat assessment prepared by the Department of Homeland Security, all of which used "similar" language to describe white supremacists as "the deadliest domestic terror threat facing the US". Unsurprisingly, the reporters later explained that all three drafts stemmed from an order given by former acting secretary Kevin McAleenan during the brief period before he was ousted in favor of Chad Wolf, nominated by Trump to drop the "acting" from his title of "Acting Homeland Security Secretary".

For those who don't remember McAleenan, he was pushed out like his predecessor, Secretary Kirstjen Nielson, after he was caught leaking details of upcoming 'ICE Raids' to the Washington Post, as we reported during June 2019. The Washington Examiner, which initially outed McAleenan as the leaker, reportedly did so "deliberately" in an attempt to stymie the raids, a central tenant of his boss's immigration policy.

Like many other former Trump Administration officials (most notably, former chief of staff John Kelly and secretary of defense Gen. James Mattis), McAleenan has apparently found a way to keep attacking and undermining the administration. Releasing damaging documents and other stories from theit time in the administration has become one popular method of doing - as James Comey calls it - "one's civic duty" to "protect democracy" from the first Republican president to win the electoral college, but not the popular vote, since - checks notes - George W Bush.

McAleenan didn't act alone. He apparently had help from notorious James Comey crony and "LawFare" blogger Ben Wittes, a notable voice in the anti-Trump movement. Politico identified him as the source of the leaked memos. We feel it's safe to assume Wittes obtained the memos from McAleenan.

Notably, none of the documents reviewed by Politico referenced any threat posed by Antifa, which President Trump back in May labeled a "Domestic Terrorist Organization". However, two of the drafts, which - keep in mind, were probably written some time early last year - did refer to the possibility of extremist groups hijacking peaceful protests by exploiting "social grievances".

We must concede, McAlennan was pretty much spot on with that last one.

Police Union Caught Issuing ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ Cards to Family, Friends That Get Them Out of Tickets

Known as blue privilege, there is an unwritten law among police officers: when they catch their fellow cop, or even their fellow cop’s family member or friend breaking the law, they are let go without consequence. Situations that have led to the murder of minorities and poor people end far differently when its police and their families caught committing the same crimes. A recent report out of Vice shows that this corruption runs so deep that police unions actually issue courtesy cards to friends and family of cops that allow them to get out of minor infractions.

The cards are issued by the Police Benevolent Association, or other police unions and they are known as “courtesy cards.” They have the issuing officer’s name and signature on the back, along with a phone number for the ticketing or arresting officer to call to verify the relationship.

As Vice reports, the cards are designed to be presented in a low-stakes police encounter, like a traffic stop, as a laminated wink-and-nudge between officers that says, “Hey, would you mind going a little easy on this one?” When a cop is handed a PBA card, they can call the number on it to verify the relationship between the cardholder and the issuer, then decide whether it means they should give the cardholder a break.

Vice interviewed a man identified only as Mike, who told them he’s been a courtesy card carrier for decades. Mike told Vice of one police encounter in which he was driving a car that was not his, had no license plate, and was illegally driving on the shoulder through a police check point when he was stopped. Despite Richard breaking numerous laws in front of police, when they stopped him, he pulled out the card and he was sent on his way.

“That was probably the tightest spot I could’ve been in,” Mike said. “Because [the offense] could’ve been ‘driving without a plate,’ ‘driving with no registration…’”

The PBA isn’t even trying to keep it a secret. As Vice reports, New York City’s largest police union issues these courtesy cards—nicknamed “get out of jail free cards”—to its members on a yearly basis. Members can pass the cards out to whomever they choose to provide them with a little extra protection.

While cops don’t have to necessarily abide by the card and can use discretion either way, the fact that the cards exist highlight a glaring problem with police.

Real ID is a badly-written law with even worse implementation. One huge glitch is that Real ID requires people's full, legal name on the ID. Which then propagates throughout the person's life, on bank accounts - and then checks - and then credit cards, and then club or group memberships, etc.

Very many people do NOT want to be constantly identified by their full, legal name. Many people, even prominent politicians, go by their middle name. Very many people - most, I think - prefer not to use their middle name. Some use a first initial then their middle name.

Then there are nicknames, by which people's entire social circle and professional life identify them.

One obvious example is California's Jerry Brown, whose actual name is Edmund Gerald Brown.

The way Real ID was written and implemented, it becomes a cruel dictatorship document which deprives people of the fundamental right to choose how they are addressed and identified.

Oregonians give the New York Times an earful about Portland

Much to the New York Times's surprise, people who live outside Portland in Oregon aren't big fans of the riot-synonymous city. Here's a quote buried way down the bottom of the piece:

“Portland is a garbage dump,” said Ms. Johnson, the resident of Gresham, a half-hour away. “I don’t want anything to do with it.”

It had to have been a surprise.

The piece was done in the context of an impressive anniversary, at least if you're a rioter - the 100th day solid of riots burning through that city.

The Times headline creates that false declivity it's often famous for - interviewing the mugger and the muggee, with that "two lives intersect" template. Their prim headline in this case is:

Which is a little bit of an understatement. Fact is, the reporter found pretty much no one with anything nice to say about Portland. Heck, even Portlanders born elsewhere don't like it.

A failed state is a state no longer exercising effective control over the whole of its nominal territory. This can take a number of forms in practice, such as:

A de facto separatist nation or nations existing within the boundaries of their de jure territory, competing for the monopoly on legitimate use of physical force.

Failure of the legitimate authority of the nation to make practical, collective decisions.

Inability to adequately provide basic social services such as policing, firefighting or emergency medical services to some or all of its territory.

Inability to connect with other states through diplomatic channels; a lack of participation in the international community.

A central government incapable of collecting enough tax revenue to operate effectively.

One or several of these factors can be present in a failed state. Once a state is “failed,” this often means widespread crime, corruption and outsized influence by non-state actors.

Politicians have less leeway, as calling a state “failed” can result in serious geopolitical consequences. As a result, most politicians would be hesitant to describe any state as “failed.”

The “Fragile States Index” (FSI) is calculated by the U.S.-based think tank Fund for Peace. They use a number of objective and subjective factors to determine whether or not a state is failed (or “fragile” as they call it) by scanning media for indicators of social, economic and political failure or fragility in a country.

Among the top-ten most fragile states include: South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe. Haiti is the first representative from the Western Hemisphere at number 12. The next appearance in the Americas is Venezuela at 46, followed by Colombia at 71. Of the 10 most stable countries, eight are in Europe (Finland, Norway and Switzerland get the gold, silver and bronze respectively) and two are in Oceania (unsurprisingly, Australia and New Zealand). The most stable non-Western country is Singapore at 161, followed by Japan at 158 and Mauritius at 151.

The FSI does not hold a monopoly on deciding what nations are and are not “failed.” It is, however, the only major organization ranking countries.

Most people under 40 were probably introduced to the concept of a “failed state” by Somalia, after the collapse of its dictatorship in the early 1990s. This led to an extended American adventure in Somalia, resulting in the events described in Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War. Not only were American lives lost, but so was a significant amount of American prestige, as Washington neocons got their first bitter taste of “nation-building” in a nation which didn’t want to be built. The central government collapsed and nothing effectively replaced it.

To this day, some organizations operating within Somalia claim to be the ruling authority. Others claim to be separate, but completely legitimate nations. And those who must do business in Somali waters arm themselves via floating barges filled with guns and ammunition to fight off pirates.

Data: 48 of America’s 50 Largest Cities Hit By Black Lives Matter Riots

New data from Princeton University shows that riots associated with the Black Lives Matter movement took place in 48 out of the 50 largest cities in the United States.

The study found:

In more than 93% of all demonstrations connected to the movement, demonstrators have not engaged in violence or destructive activity. Peaceful protests are reported in over 2,400 distinct locations around the country. Violent demonstrations, meanwhile, have been limited to fewer than 220 locations ​— under 10% of the areas that experienced peaceful protests.

Mainstream media seized on the data last week to argue that the “Trump narrative” of violent demonstrations was false. The study itself speculated that public perceptions of riots were skewed by “political orientation and biased media framing” and “disproportionate coverage of violent demonstrations.”

The Princeton data set shows that nearly every major city in the United States experienced riots from late May to the end of August — even under the narrow definition that the study used to classify riots (as separate from events described as police violence against protesters).

Thus in the public imagination, the proportion that matters most may not be the 7% of protests that were violent, but the 96% of major urban areas that experienced rioting.

What are the main headlines from your research that you can see in this documentary?

SCHWEIZER: Well, the main headlines, Jesse are these: that the Bidens made a lot of money, courtesy of the Chinese government. We’re not talking about Chinese businesses — the Chinese government. This happened while Joe Biden was the point person on Obama administration policy towards China.

The real kicker, however, is that Kraebber worked for Beto O'Rourke's failed senate campaign in 2018, when he attempted to oust Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). She also donated $121 to the Rice Young Democrats PAC, Fox News reported.

The damage these people caused has harmed those who are simply trying to do their job.

The following analysis is motivated by a discussion that took place in front of the Third Precinct as fires billowed from its windows on Day Three of the George Floyd Rebellion in Minneapolis. We joined a group of people whose fire-lit faces beamed in with joy and awe from across the street. People of various ethnicities sat side by side talking about the tactical value of lasers, the “share everything” ethos, interracial unity in fighting the police, and the trap of “innocence.” There were no disagreements; we all saw the same things that helped us win. Thousands of people shared the experience of these battles. We hope that they will carry the memory of how to fight. But the time of combat and the celebration of victory is incommensurable with the habits, spaces, and attachments of everyday life and its reproduction. It is frightening how distant the event already feels from us. Our purpose here is to preserve the strategy that proved victorious against the Minneapolis Third Precinct.

Our analysis focuses on the tactics and composition of the crowd that besieged the Third Precinct on Day Two of the uprising. The siege lasted roughly from 4 pm well into the early hours of the morning of May 28. We believe that the tactical retreat of the police from the Third Precinct on Day Three was won by the siege of Day Two, which exhausted the Precinct’s personnel and supplies. We were not present for the fighting that preceded the retreat on Day Three, as we showed up just as the police were leaving. We were across the city in an area where youth were fighting the cops in tit-for-tat battles while trying to loot a strip mall—hence our focus on Day Two here.

Study: America Hit By Roughly 550 Violent Demonstrations In Three Months

Data gathered in a Thursday study suggested that the U.S. experienced nearly 550 violent demonstrations since May 26, the day after the death of George Floyd.

The vast majority of U.S. states have experienced riots in the past three months with Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Mississippi, West Virginia, Hawaii and Alaska being the only ones unscathed by violence, according to data gathered by The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED).

There were a total of 7,750 Black Lives Matter-linked demonstrations in the U.S. in 2,440 locations across all 50 states, according to ACLED’s data.

Ninety-three percent of these demonstrations were peaceful, but that indicated that approximately 543 events were violent, according to ACLED’s statistics.

Violent demonstrations have largely been contained to 220 locations with Portland being the hardest hit location, the data show.
