Australia’s Brisbane set for ‘strictest lockdown’ yet after SIX new cases spotted

Brisbane is headed for another “snap” lockdown, following six new local coronavirus infections, forcing most residents in Australia’s third-most populous city and other regions of Queensland to stay at home until next week.

Queensland officials announced the three-day lockdown on Saturday morning, with state premier Annastacia Palaszczuk urging locals not to venture beyond their homes until the measures expire on August 3, with a few exceptions. The new snap shutdown order comes after just six new cases were tallied on Saturday, along with one imported from abroad.

“We received the advice of the chief health officer, and the premier has ordered that we move strongly and implement all of the restrictions advised,” said Queensland deputy premier Steven Miles, adding that the state had to “go hard and go early” to combat the new cluster of infections.

This will be the strictest lockdown that we have had.

The six cases are believed to be linked to a Brisbane high school student who mingled with fellow teenagers and teachers at two different schools placed under isolation, according to the news agency AFP. All of the new cases reportedly involve the more contagious Delta variant first observed in India.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also weighed in on Queensland’s situation, urging officials to move quickly, and asserting that short but strict lockdowns would be the best approach for the Delta mutation, at least until the country’s vaccine drive picks up steam.

Saturday’s order comes a month after Brisbane’s last shutdown, on June 29, which was imposed on the heels of two new infections. That measure also lasted three days and, like the new policy, required all but essential workers and those seeking medical attention or vaccinations to remain at home, with exemptions for necessary shopping and limited outdoor exercise.

To date, Queensland has recorded around 1,800 infections in total, and just seven deaths since the Covid-19 pandemic emerged in late 2019. That puts it far below harder-hit states, such as New South Wales, which has undergone its own series of harsh lockdowns in recent weeks, largely focused on the state capital, Sydney.

Australia’s most populous city, Sydney is headed for its sixth consecutive week under the restrictions, which will soon be enforced by the military, with 300 soldiers set to patrol for rule-breakers from next week. The city of some 5.3 million residents has reported nearly 3,200 infections in its latest outbreak alone, as well as about 200 patients hospitalized and 14 deaths.

CDC director says Biden 'looking into' federal vaccine mandate — then issues major clarification

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was forced to issue a correction late Friday after an interview on Fox News in which she admitted the Biden administration is exploring the possibility of a nationwide vaccine mandate.

While speaking with Fox News anchor Bret Baier on "Special Report," Walensky admitted that she and President Joe Biden are "looking into" a federal vaccine mandate.

Baier asked, "Are you for mandating a vaccine on a federal level?"

"That's something that I think the administration is looking into. It's something that I think we are looking to see approval of from the vaccine," Walensky replied. "Overall, I think in general, I am all for more vaccination. But, I have nothing further to say on that except that we are looking into those policies."

Walenksy's eyebrow-raising comments came as the Biden administration aggressively pushes for Americans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

After the Fox News interview, Walensky claimed on Twitter that she was not, in fact, referring to a nationwide vaccine mandate for all Americans, but for certain federal workers and private institutions.

Arkansas Judge Restores $300 Pandemic Jobless Benefit Boost

An Arkansas judge on Thursday ordered the state to resume paying the $300 supplemental federal pandemic jobless benefit that the state’s governor blamed for fueling a hiring crunch and decided to end early.

In granting the plaintiffs a preliminary injunction that reinstates the federal jobless compensation boost, Pulaski County Circuit Judge Herbert Wright Jr. expressed “serious doubts” whether Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson had the authority to end the benefit early, according to a July 28 order (pdf).

Hutchinson, a Republican, in May announced that the state would end its participation in the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program on June 26, citing business hiring difficulties.

“The $300 federal supplement helped thousands of Arkansans make it through this tough time, so it served a good purpose,” Hutchinson said in a statement at the time. “Now we need Arkansans back on the job so that we can get our economy back to full speed.”

The plaintiffs—five Arkansas residents—sued Hutchinson and the Arkansas Director of Workforce Services, arguing they lacked the authority to end the state’s participation in the federal program ahead of its scheduled termination date in September.

The judge agreed, arguing in the order that such decisions would normally be the subject of legislation from the Arkansas state legislature and that the plaintiffs have a “reasonable likelihood of success on the merits and are likely to suffer harm in the absence of a preliminary injunction.”

FDA Extends Shelf Life of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 Vaccine

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has agreed to extend the shelf life on Johnson & Johnson’s single-shot COVID-19 vaccine from four-and-a-half months to six months.

In a July 28 concurrence letter (pdf), the FDA said Johnson & Johnson had provided sufficient data to support the extension of the company’s vaccine to six months, including for already expired batches, provided they have been stored within the required temperature range of between 36–46 degrees Fahrenheit (2–8 degrees Celsius).

Johnson & Johnson said in a statement that it is “pleased” with the FDA’s decision, adding that the pharmaceutical firm had provided the agency with data from ongoing stability assessment studies that have demonstrated the vaccine remains stable at six months if stored at the required temperature.

Health authorities in a number of states have warned that they may be forced to throw out thousands of doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine absent an extension.

The FDA has been reviewing expiration dates on all three COVID-19 vaccines authorized for emergency use in the United States, as manufacturers have continued to test batches for stability following their roll-out. Pfizer and Moderna’s two-dose vaccines have a shelf life of six months.

Johnson & Johnson’s one-and-done vaccine was highly anticipated because it could be stored at relatively high temperatures and so facilitated distribution, particularly in developing countries with patchy cold-storage infrastructure.

“A single-shot vaccine that provides this level of protection represents an important tool in the global fight against COVID-19, as we strive to help end this deadly pandemic,” the company said in a statement.

But use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine has been hurt by several rare potential side effects.

In April, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended states temporarily halt using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine out of caution and investigated several women who developed cerebral venous sinus thrombosis along with low blood platelets within two weeks of getting the shot. But a CDC panel later in the month voted to resume usage of vaccine and recommended adding a warning.

Earlier in July, health regulators added a new warning to the vaccine about links to a potentially dangerous neurological reaction called Guillain-Barré syndrome.

In both cases, government health advisers said that the overall benefits of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine outweigh the risks associated with potential side effects.

Transgender Internet Personality Allegedly Admits To Sexually Assaulting Own Mother

Internet personality Chris Chan allegedly admitted to sexually abusing their 80-year-old mother, who is widely believed to suffer from dementia.

Police in Virginia have reportedly served a protective order against autistic transgender Internet personality Christine Chandler, better known as their Internet moniker, Chris Chan, and born Christopher Chandler, after the publication of audio and text messages that appear to feature 39-year-old Chandler discussing sexually abusing their mother, 80-year-old Barbara Chandler, who is widely believed to be suffering from dementia.

In a nearly 10 minute audio recording posted to Kiwi Farms, the person identified as Chandler appears to admit to having repeated sexual intercourse with their mother since June of this year, and at one point explains that “We’ve been doing it every third night and the first night was on June 27”. The person identified as Chandler explained that they approached Barbara Chandler “with care and caution” in “a timed approach” that “just branched out slow and steady” until they let Barbara “make the first move, and she wanted to do it.”

The person identified as Chandler also appeared to share share graphic details of the intercourse. “She’s got a really sensitive g-spot, because apparently I don’t believe her… any of her past boyfriends, ex husbands, they haven’t really reached, hit her g-spot really”, said the person identified as Chandler at one point, ostensibly speaking about their own father. “They were more focused on themselves, really, as opposed to focusing on her, which that’s my focus”.
