Hidden on Page 508 of the Infrastructure Bill Is a Plan to Make It Too Expensive to Drive a Car

 

The cost of living is on the rise, calls for yet another wave of pandemic restrictions have begun and now, buried deep in the so-called bipartisan infrastructure bill, the left has laid out yet another idea to bring Americans to their knees.

 

Make no mistake: The suffering is intentional, goal-oriented and not bound to stop anytime soon.

 

Still, one proposal in the 2,702 page infrastructure bill seems especially cruel β€” cruel enough to make it too expensive for many Americans to even drive a car.

 

Nick Short of the Claremont Institute highlighted an item on Pages 508-519 of the bill that would introduce a national per-mile motor vehicle user fee on a trial basis.

 

β€œBuried on page 508 of the 2,702 page infrastructure bill is a pilot program for a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee (MBUF) which is basically a long-term plan to make it too expensive to drive a car,” Short said Tuesday on Twitter.

 

The pilot program is set up β€œto test the design, acceptance, implementation, and financial sustainability of a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee, to address the need for additional revenue for surface transportation infrastructure and a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee” and β€œto provide recommendations relating to the adoption and implementation of a national motor vehicle per-mile user fee,” the bill says.

 

An article from The Lid Blog attached to Short’s tweet detailed the proposal even further, breaking down each component, from the program’s objectives to its proposal that β€œvolunteers” from each state should discover different ways to collect data on miles driven by β€œboth commercial and private vehicle operators.”

 

On Page 513, the proposal says that the β€œSecretary of the Treasury shall establish, on an annual basis, per-mile user fees for passenger motor vehicles, light trucks, and medium- and heavy-duty trucks.”

 

In theory, these per-mile user fees would vary by vehicle contingent upon several factors, including β€” you guessed it β€” environmental impact.

 

To ease any apprehension about participating in the pilot program, the measure indicates that participants’ identities will be protected, perhaps, as The Lid said, to prevent ostracization β€œif this happens and achieves the desired result.”

 

The left can chalk up this test run of what eventually might turn into a full-blown measure to make owning a vehicle next-to-impossible as an effort to be β€œenvironmentally conscious,” but is it instead another way to cripple our existing ways of life?

 

We might dismiss it now, but imagine telling yourself five years ago that the government would order small business closures, codify when and how Americans could worship and adopt an increasingly draconian β€œdo as I say, not as I do” policy to address a global pandemic.

White House Dismisses Unwanted Touching Allegations Against Joe Biden as β€˜Heavily Litigated’

 

The White House dismissed Wednesday the idea of an independent investigation into women’s allegations against President Joe Biden of inappropriate touching or actions.

 

The New York Post’s Stephen Nelson asked press secretary Jen Psaki during the daily press briefing if the White House would support an investigation into allegations from female Secret Service agents complaining of Biden skinny dipping at his pool in front of them when he was vice president and allegations of sexual assault by one of his former Senate aides Tara Reade.

Government-Funded Researchers Sought Aborted Minorities for Organ Harvesting

 

Taxpayers shelled out nearly $3 million to build organ 'pipeline' at University of Pittsburgh

 

The federal government gave at least $2.7 million in taxpayer money to researchers who sought out minority babies who had been aborted in order to harvest their organs, according to internal documents released Tuesday.

 

The University of Pittsburgh targeted minorities in its request for infant organsβ€”including those taken from full-term babiesβ€”to create a "pipeline" for fetal research. Researchers said they needed 50 percent of the donated fetuses to be minorities and specified that 25 percent must come from black women. The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is 85 percent white and 8 percent black. Researchers stressed the importance of maintaining organ blood flow in the request, which watchdogs say could violate federal law by asking doctors to illegally preserve organs during labor-inducing abortions.

 

The National Institutes of Health has overseen experiments on fetal organs at the University of Pittsburgh since 2015 in what the school claimed to be a "tissue hub." Aborted babies used in this research ranged from 6 to 42 weeks of gestation, according to government documents. The grant request from the university to the government agency redacts key information, including how many fetuses were obtained and who provided them. Its language, however, raised troubling questions.

 

David Daleiden, founder and president of the pro-life Center for Medical Progress, called on the federal government to investigate the NIH and Pitt after obtaining more than 300 pages of information related to the program through a public records request.

 

"The experiments with aborted infants at the University of Pittsburgh, sponsored by the NIH, are like Kermit Gosnell's house of horrors, but this time funded by the federal government," Daleiden told the Washington Free Beacon. "It was systemic bias and abortion extremism that permitted Gosnell to evade the law for so long, and the same thing is happening in Pittsburgh. These atrocities deserve the full response of law enforcement and government officialsβ€”law enforcement should put a stop to it and arrest the perpetrators."

 

The NIH did not respond to a request for comment.

Former National Security Agency Director and former head of U.S. Cyber Command Retired Admiral Mike Rogers joins β€œCBS This Morning: Saturday” to talk about the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline and the ongoing risk it highlights.

 

– This morning, the routine task of filling up your car’s gas tank remains a difficult one for millions of Americans amid a shortage caused by that cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline. The pipeline originates in Texas and carries about 45% of the fuel used on the East Coast.

The FBI says the attack was the work of DarkSide, a shadowy hacker group that demanded and got what is believed to be a multimillion-dollar ransom. For more on the pipeline attack and the ongoing risk it highlights, we are joined by retired Admiral Mike Rogers, former National Security Agency director and former head of the US Cyber Command.

 

Admiral, let me start with, it seems like, the two basic questions. How did this happen? And what did we learn? Specifically, let’s start with how did this happen?

MIKE ROGERS: So in this case, this Russian criminal group, DarkSide, was able to use malicious software programs. They gained access to Colonial Pipeline’s information technology segment, if you will. And they were able to lock it down to preclude the company’s ability to access their network. As a result, the company, it appears, opted to, in turn, shut down the pipeline or the operational side of their business to ensure that this didn’t spread any further.

 

– So are the hackers getting more sophisticated or are companies just simply not upgrading their systems to where they should be?

MIKE ROGERS: Well, I wish I could tell you that it was only one thing. But the reality is you’re seeing, as a result of COVID and the disbursement of workforces from the workplace out to their homes and other areas as we are connecting more and more systems of a business to the internet as more and more entities, criminal groups, start to engage in ransomware because, quite frankly, it’s been very successful and they’re able to generate a lot of money, and as the level of ability of some of these criminal actors grows– the bottom line is you’re seeing a much greater susceptibility to this kind of activity. You’re seeing a much higher number of actors engaged in this kind of activity. And the proficiency level of those actors just keeps growing.

 

– Admiral, the– this week, the president signed an executive order mandating minimum cybersecurity requirements for companies. Do you think there should be more collaboration between the government and the private sector or is this something that companies, private companies, should be responsible for on their own?

MIKE ROGERS: I think– look, it’s a challenge to ask a company, if you will, to withstand the concerted efforts, in some cases, of nation-states and others, as in this event, a criminal group. I think it’s in our nation’s best interest to collaborate. But I would argue we need to move beyond collaboration in a much more– into an integrated approach to how we’re going to do cybersecurity, particularly in those areas in the private sector that impact the safety and well-being of our citizens as well as our economy, if you will.

I think it’s very disappointing that literally a week into this event, you had the federal government on Friday, yesterday, say, well, we still don’t have all the details from the company on exactly what happened. That’s not a good place to be.

 

– We– in this case, it appears that the ransom was paid. And that seems to almost always be the case. What is the merit of paying it? And is there really another option for companies that face this, or government organizations?

MIKE ROGERS: So broadly, I’m not a proponent of paying ransom. Number one, there’s no guarantee that if you give the– in this case, the criminal group the money, they’re actually going to unlock your systems. Secondly, the payment of ransom tends to encourage others because they’re engaged in this activity because they can make money from it.

But having said that, I acknowledge it is not an easy decision. You’re a hospital in the middle of a pandemic. And your systems are shut down due to a cyber hack. It’s a tough call to tell them, hey, look, we’ll just shut it down. Don’t pay the ransom. I think this shows you that in some areas, we need a much tighter and a little different relationship between the federal government and the private sector because the government’s got to help here.

As part of the Upfront Summit, former National Security Agency director and head of the Cyber Command, Michael Rogers, recently shared his thoughts on the state of cyberwarfare, the nation’s approach to cybersecurity and the relationship between people and technology

 

When asked about the current state of nation activity in cyberspace, Rogers spoke of the various ways nations use digital attacks as an offensive tool. He said he has never seen any nation besides North Korea use cyberattacks to go after money. Iran uses cyberattacks as a low-risk way to change behavior of their adversaries. Russia, on the other hand, uses cyberattacks as a means to control the dynamic between cyber and information, while China uses this method for technological developments toward an economic advantage.

 

To explain the variety of cyberattacks, Rogers referred to the human element of cyberwarfare.

 

While these nations hold a view that cyberattacks are low risk, Rogers said the U.S. does not share this mentality. He said he believes the U.S. needs to focus on offensive cyber development rather than respond to adversaries.

 

β€œMy military career taught me, good or bad, you try to shape your opponent’s behaviors to drive them to make choices that benefit you, not them,” said Rogers, a retired Navy admiral. β€œSo my attitude was while we do this in so many other areas, why can’t we do that in cyber?”

 

Rogers and his team came up with the idea of persistent engagement, an offensive strategy to fight the daily actions of adversaries with a goal of establishing a stronger U.S. presence in cyberspace.

 

β€œWe have got to show these guys that we have the capability and the will to contest them in every domain,” he said.

 

Rogers also discussed the relationship between the public and the private sectors. He said the spread of cybersecurity responsibilities across such a complex network of organizations and structures in the U.S. makes collaboration difficult.

 

Government and industry should come together after an attack and find ways to prevent future incidents, he said. Doing so will benefit both sectors and improve cybersecurity for the U.S. overall.

 

β€œI want to be in a situation where the pain of the one leads to the benefit of the many,” Rogers said. β€œSo if one company, one entity is dealing with the problem, we use that as a way to improve a broader set of actors.”

 

Rogers also talked about the relationship between government and citizens and the importance of trust in making important cyber decisions. He stressed the importance of transparency and discussion, and how further connecting human values with cyber technology would prevent a disconnect between citizens’ beliefs and government action.

 

β€œYou want to do intelligence in a democratic structure in the digital age, then you better start from a premise that says you need to be open kimono to a much greater degree than historically we have been,” he said.

I went into the Grocery store today & they offered mask to people without them & I heard the girl tell the Manager NOT ONE PERSON wanted one. I saw maybe 5 people with Mask on shopping. Looks like people are tired of being afraid to live.

Right-wing activist Sherronna Bishop was U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert’s (R-CO) campaign manager when she ousted then-Congressman Scott Tipton in Colorado’s Republican primary in June.

 

But sometime after the primary, Bishop disappeared from Boebert’s campaign.

 

The exact date of her departure isn’t known, but she was gone by the time ABC News aired a story in October of 2020 headlined β€œGOP Candidate’s Former Campaign Chief: Thank God for the Proud Boys.”

 

The story revealed that in September of 2019, Bishop posted a video to her β€œAmerica’s Mom” Facebook page showing Bishop interviewing a man identified as a member of the Proud Boys, a far-right white nationalist organization. She closes the interview with, β€œThank God for you guys and the Proud Boys.”

 

ABC News reported,

 

β€œBoebert’s Communications Director Laura Carno responded by saying Bishop’s views β€˜were not part of Lauren Boebert’s campaign.’ In a text message to ABC News, Bishop said she was no longer with the campaign. Neither she nor Carno would say when that occurred or if it changed in reaction to this story.”

 

Boebert’s campaign also told ABC that Boebert has β€œno connection whatsoever with the Proud Boys.”

 

Yet Boebert still appears to embrace Bishop (literally), as you can see in this Facebook photo posted by Bishop last month:

 

Bishop, who also goes by America’s Mom, didn’t respond to a message seeking to know when the photo was taken and when she left Boebert’s campaign and why.

 

Likewise, Boebert hasn’t explained what happened to Bishop during her campaign and could not be reached for comment today. Did they really stop talking? Was Bishop fired? Did she not know everything that was going on? Are they talking now?

 

Bishop picked up Boebert’s campaign phone line and spoke briefly to the Colorado Times Recorder in early July. And the campaign told ABC she was managing the campaign in July. She also appeared at a July Boebert event in an unspecified role.

 

It’s clear that Bishop was closely involved in Boebert’s primary campaign, and still acts as if she is close with Boebert now, promoting and defending the congresswoman on social media, calling Boebert a β€œnational hero” and writing that she is β€œforever changed” by Boebert’s β€œexample of Servant Leadership.”

 

It’s unclear if Bishop’s far-right views, her endorsement of extremists, and her penchant for conspiracies and false information drove Boebert to seek a new campaign manager, or if something else occurred that led Bishop to change lanes.

 

Despite her exit from the job as campaign manager, Bishop has remained a steady influence in Boebert’s life: they appear to be close friends and spent time with each other throughout Boebert’s campaign. Bishop continually publishes supportive Facebook posts of Boebert.

Bishop, who gained attention when she helped drive the effort to recall Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis, runs an unconventional Facebook page, brimming with extremism.

 

Her social media is rife with attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, from accusing schools of β€œqueer-orizing” preschool and kindergarten, to making fun of transgender individuals, to comparing a children’s drag show to the sexualization of children.

 

You can also spot β€œFalse Information” flags from Facebook on her posts every once in a while.

 

One post on the Facebook page suggests that President Joe Biden has a body double.

 

Oh, and she compares abortion to the Holocaust.

A Santa Barbara, California, father suspected of killing his two children in Mexico told the FBI he was a QAnon adherent and had to kill them because they had been infected with serpent DNA and he was saving the world from monsters, according to a criminal complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court Wednesday.

 

Matthew Taylor Coleman, 40, is charged with two counts of foreign murder of a United States national in the slaying of his 2-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter. He is accused of shooting them with a spearfishing gun on Monday in Rosarito β€” a beach community 30 minutes south of Tijuana, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

 

While QAnon encompasses a broad array of conspiracy theories, its followers generally believe that former President Donald Trump is fighting a deep-state of Satan-worshipping cannibals β€” including prominent Democrats and A-list celebrities β€” who are operating a child sex-trafficking ring.

 

It was not immediately clear whether Coleman had yet hired an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

 

Customs and Border Protection officers reported seeing what appeared to be blood on the van's registration paperwork, according to the affidavit.

 

When the children were not found with Coleman, FBI agents contacted law enforcement officials in Rosarito and learned that Mexican authorities that morning had recovered the bodies of two children matching the description of Coleman's children.

 

Coleman later told FBI agents during an interrogation that he killed the children with a spearfishing gun, which he discarded a couple miles away along with some bloody clothes and a baby blanket, according to the affidavit. Mexican authorities were able to find those items and the murder weapon.

 

QAnon beliefs have been linked not only to political violence, including the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, but to violence grounded in delusions about the victimization of children. In 2019, an internal memo from the Phoenix office of the FBI called QAnon and adjacent conspiracy theories a domestic terror threat, citing at least two violent incidents.

 

The movement has had to pivot after Trump's predicted day of judgment, known as "The Storm," did not arrive as promised, and many people now believe that Trump is a "shadow" president.

 

A report by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security released in June warned of more violent action by adherents of QAnon, with some likely to begin believing that "they can no longer 'trust the plan' referenced in QAnon posts and that they have an obligation to change from serving as 'digital soldiers' towards engaging in real world violence."

A ship sailing under a Panama flag has run aground near a harbour in northern Japan and is leaking oil, the Japan Coast Guard said, adding that oil has not yet reached the shore.

Efforts are being made to bring the oil leak under control, officials said.

They picked a not-so-lethal virus (if there even is a virus and it's not just the flu) because this COVID project also has a PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE aspect to it too. Think Deagel, saying the population is going to drop down to 60 million. How are we going to get to that number?

 

What is everyone starting to think about the CDC, Biden, local governors, and everyone who's telling us to wear masks and get the vaccine? Everyone's "waking up", but everyone is losing faith in their government institutions.

This is exacerbated by the increasingly unstable and pessimistic view of the future held by many young men.

 

South Korea’s rigorous school system, with its gruelling hours and entrance exams, has produced highly capable young people. However, upon leaving university many enter a saturated job market in major cities.

 

Women, once viewed as having no place in these workforces, are now a key source of competition, thanks to initiatives to create more inclusive work environments.

 

Although the internet cannot be said to be the sole cause for these young men’s growing conservativism, it has become a tool.

 

The right-wing website Ilbe, in particular, is a hub for the proliferation of hateful language and views against women. As the third most visited website in 2016, misogynistic threats and hate speech have increasingly become the norm online.

 

Spaces that encourage female membership have become isolated in the interest of safety, while websites engaging in discussion around perceived reverse sexism are commonly restricted to men-only membership.

 

As a result of these exclusionary online spaces, conservative biases towards gender equality are confirmed and encouraged.

CAMBRIDGESHIRE, United Kingdom β€” A lottery winner who won Β£148 million (US$232.5 million) in a Euro Millions drawing in August 2012 sold the mansion he bought with his lottery winnings at a loss.

 

Not only did Adrian Bayford make headlines in 2012 for claiming the massive jackpot, which was Britain's second-largest Euro Millions win at the time, but now he is making another appearance in the news for selling the home he was dumped in on four separate occasions.

 

After collecting the prize at the time of his win, Bayford purchased a country mansion in Cambridgeshire built between 1815 and 1825 with his then-wife Gillian. She spent some of the money on her own fleet of luxury Audis, but she took home more than just a bunch of high-end cars from the dealership. Within just a year, she left her husband to date an Audi salesman.

 

The couple, who shared two children together, blamed the end of their nine-year marriage on the stresses caused by the influx of sudden wealth. When they went public with their win, they insisted they would not let their newfound fortune change them. They eventually managed to reach an agreement to split the lottery winnings, one of the biggest ever won in Britain.

 

Bayford moved on and dated Marta Jarosz, 37, a Polish sausage factory worker. He then got engaged to Sam Burbidge, 33, a stable girl, after which he began a relationship with waitress Lisa Kemp, 41.

 

One by one, each woman dumped him after moving in with him in his sprawling country estate.

 

The unlucky lottery winner placed the blame on the 189-acre property for his misfortune and unhappiness.

 

"He just wanted rid," one of Bayford's friends told The Sun. "He blames the house for all the bad luck he's had in love. You can see why. He's had a tough run."

 

The home, which is now marked as "sold" online, had a cinema, billiards room, gym, and pool installed by Bayford. The property also features a stable, but photos show them in a currently dilapidated state overrun by weeds. It was put on the market in 2018.

 

"He says the move from his old, happy life brought all the bad luck he's had," the friend explained. "Since Gillian left, he's just wanted someone to share his millions with, but it's not worked out."

 

The house sold for Β£6.5 million (US$9 million), but to break even while taking into account inflation and improvements, he would have had to sell it for Β£7,239,896 (US$10.04 million), according to financial experts.

 

Since selling the mansion, Bayford has moved into a Β£2.5 million (US$3.47 million) home near Blairgowrie in Perthshire to be closer to his kids and ex-wife Gillian, who has since remarried and had another child.

The Washington Monument was struck by lightning on Saturday evening.

 

The incredible scene was captured live on a bystanders video.

 

Gasps could be heard in the footage from people who witnessed it.

 

From 2010 to 2019, the Washington Monument has averaged being struck by lightning between once every five years and twice per year.

 

The monument, which is 555 feet tall and made from white marble, was also struck in June of 2020 and in June of this year.

 

It is currently unclear if there was any damage to the iconic structure.

A former employee of Jeffrey Epstein is reportedly β€œready and willing” to testify against Prince Andrew in a sexual assault lawsuit brought on by Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

 

Steve Scully, who was employed by Epstein for six years, is willing to testify about what he saw in the Manhattan Federal Court case.

 

According to a report from The Sun, Scully says he saw Prince Andrew kissing and grinding against a bikini-clad Giuffre by a pool between 2001 and 2004.

 

β€œI was working on the phone and he (Andrew) was by the pool with Virginia. As soon as I saw him, I recognised him,” Scully told the Sun. β€œI thought, β€˜If I had a camera in my bag right now, I’d have a $50,000 picture’.”

 

The former employee told the paper that they were β€œbumping and grinding” for several minutes before lying on lounge chairs by the pool.

 

Scully said he was β€œstruck” by how young the girl was β€” but he apparently did nothing to intervene.

 

β€œShe stood like a kid would stand behind a parent,” he said, adding β€œAndrew’s protecting himself and his family.”

 

The telecom specialist said that if Giuffre’s lawyers call he will give a deposition under oath.

Just your average, run-of-the-mill, hedge-fund-investing-in-a-brokerage-based-in-Kazakhstan returning 500% story. We know, the newswires are flooded with them, and you're tired of hearing about them, right?

 

That, of course, is sarcasm.

 

But for the part about returning 500% based on the operations of what some would call an opaque overseas entity. And it's all because of a mysterious and obscure brokerage called Freedom Holding Corporation, which purports to provide "retail securities brokerage, research, investment counseling, securities trading, market making, corporate investment banking, and underwriting services". Among those services, it claims to open up access to U.S. markets to people overseas.

 

Freedom claims it is even able to get its hands on hot U.S. IPO listings, according to a Bloomberg look into the company.

 

Russian billionaire Timur Turlov, who is 33 years old and listed as Freedom's CEO and Chairman, told Bloomberg: β€œWe remain one of the few floodgates to the Western market for customers from our region.”

 

And the hedge fund posting the incredible returns runs through Belize and is "personally controlled" by Turlov. The fund's connections across Wall Street has "secured access to hot new stocks in America" and is allowing Russians, Kazakhs, Uzbeks and Ukrainians to have access to U.S. IPOs, Turlov says.

 

The arrangement is being done in a manner where the more shares of Freedom that Turlov's customers buy, the more exposure to U.S. listed IPO's they get

President Ghani leaves Afghanistan, top official confirms, as US-backed govt relinquishes power to Taliban

 

President Ashraf Ghani has left Afghanistan, paving the way for the Taliban to take control of the country after the militant group marched on Kabul, senior official Abdullah Abdullah has confirmed.

 

Ghani fled the Afghan capital on Sunday, following a stunning Taliban offensive that ended at the gates of Kabul. Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the Afghan National Reconciliation Council, said that β€œhe left Afghanistan in a hard time, God hold him accountable.”

 

The militants called for negotiations, after claiming they wanted to avoid a battle that could cost civilian lives. The president left the country accompanied by his β€œclose aides,” TOLO, an Afghan news channel, reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

 

A source told Russia’s RIA-Novosti news agency that Ghani had fled to Tajikistan and would soon travel from there to a third country.

Dominic Raab was ON HOLIDAY as Taliban encircled Afghan capital, reports say, while UK Ambassador said to be remaining in Kabul

 

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab was on vacation as the Taliban closed in on Kabul, British media reports. Raab has been forced to wrap up his holidays, as PM Boris Johnson has called an urgent meeting on events in Afghanistan.

 

Raab flew back to Britain on Sunday, days after it became clear that the situation on the ground in Afghanistan was rapidly evolving and the fall of Kabul was only a matter of time. Taliban militants entered the country’s capital on Sunday, while Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

 

It was not immediately clear where the top UK diplomat was vacationing while the pro-Western Afghan government effectively fell apart. The Foreign Office refused to disclose the minister’s holiday destination to media.

 

At the same time, the diplomatic service said that the British envoy in Afghanistan was at his working place and the mission continues to operate.

 

β€œWe have reduced our diplomatic presence in response to the situation on the ground, but our Ambassador remains in Kabul and UK Government staff continue to work to provide assistance to British nationals and to our Afghan staff,” a Foreign Office spokesperson said.

 

The mission was said to be staying put at its Kabul compound, even as the US embassy staff had already been airlifted to the city’s airport. The French foreign ministry said that its mission will be relocated closer to the airport as well.

 

The Taliban’s flash offensive has apparently spoiled vacations not just for Raab; the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has scrambled an urgent COBRA meeting to assess the Afghanistan situation. The Civil Contingencies Committee is usually convened over matters of national security or major disruptions, with ministers and senior officials from various government bodies in attendance.

 

Johnson also asked UK lawmakers to cut short their vacations, recalling Parliament from its summer recess over the Afghan crisis.

 

Speaking later on Sunday, Johnson said that it was very clear that a β€œnew government” will emerge in Kabul shortly. At the same time, he urged other countries to abstain from recognising the Taliban as the new rulers of Afghanistan.

 

β€œWe don’t want anybody bilaterally recognising the Taliban,” Johnson stated. β€œWe want a united position amongst all the like-minded, as far as we can get one.”

 

The PM also said the UK government is working to get British nationals out of Afghanistan as soon as possible. London has means to do so over the next few days, Johnson said.

Tennessee Seizes Thousands of Counterfeit COVID-19 Vaccination Cards Shipped From China

 

Over 3,000 fake COVID-19 vaccination cards from China have been seized in Memphis, Tennessee en route to other cities in the United States.

 

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) caught a shipment from Shenzhen, China to New Orleans, Louisiana, which contained 51 blank counterfeit vaccination cards, CBP said in a press release on Aug. 13. β€œIt was the 15th such shipment of the night,” they said.

 

The FBI warned on March 30 that buying, selling, or using a counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination cards is a crime, and violators will face a fine and up to five years in prison.

 

The White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeff Zients also warned on Aug. 13 that it is β€œa crime” to falsify COVID-19 vaccination cards, amid new restrictions handed down by several major cities.

 

After New York City announced it would mandate vaccine passports at certain businesses starting next month, and a growing number of colleges and universities across the country are requiring vaccination for students to attend in-person classes, there has been a surge in fake vaccination cards.

Chinese Police Detain Two in Alibaba Sexual Assault Case

 

TAIPEI, Taiwanβ€”Two men were detained Saturday on suspicion of sexual assault in a case that shook Alibaba Group, the world’s biggest e-commerce company, Chinese police announced.

 

The men, identified by the surnames Wang and Zhang, were suspected of the crime of β€œforcible molestation,” police in the eastern city of Jinan said in a statement. It said they were under β€œcoercive measures,” a euphemism for detention.

 

There was no evidence to indicate the men committed rape, a different charge under Chinese law, the police statement said.

 

Alibaba was shaken last week after a female employee’s complaint on an internal company website that she was sexually assaulted by a manager surnamed Wang became public. The woman complained Alibaba failed to act after she reported the incident to its human resources department.

 

The woman, surnamed Zhou, had flown into Jinan on July 27, the police statement said. That night and the following morning, she was reportedly assaulted by Wang and Zhang.

 

Zhou reported the assaults to Jinan police the same day after having checked out from the hotel. On July 29, the day after, police in Jinan said they had to extend the review period another 30 days before they could formally file a case, owing to its complexity.

 

After Zhou went public with her accusations and her story went viral, the police listed her case formally in the system as a sexual assault case.

 

Alibaba did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

Women in China face a very steep uphill battle in trying to get justice for any form of sexual violence. Whether it’s sexual harassment or rape, victims often face the burden of evidence in court.

 

β€œIt’s hard for many victims to win a sexual assault case in court,” Li Ying, a lawyer and director of the Yuanzhong Gender Development Center, told state-owned China Daily. β€œEven if the victims have the evidence, they have to prove the perpetrator acted against their will.”

 

Still, some have been heartened, after a limited #MeToo movement emerged in China in 2018. Then, young women went public with accusations against the men who had assaulted or harassed them, opening up the public conversation in a way that had not been seen before.

 

However, the movement faced a tremendous amount of pressure from local and central authorities, as well as extensive censorship, and was obstructed.

 

In response to the #MeToo movement, China codified sexual harassment in its civil code last year, but did little to lay out guidelines for enforcement. While the law provides protection for women against any form of sexual violence, enforcement remains difficult.
