Transduction of the Geomagnetic Field as Evidenced from Alpha-band Activity in the Human Brain

 

Abstract

 

Magnetoreception, the perception of the geomagnetic field, is a sensory modality well-established across all major groups of vertebrates and some invertebrates, but its presence in humans has been tested rarely, yielding inconclusive results. We report here a strong, specific human brain response to ecologically-relevant rotations of Earth-strength magnetic fields. Following geomagnetic stimulation, a drop in amplitude of EEG alpha oscillations (8-13 Hz) occurred in a repeatable manner. Termed alpha event-related desynchronization (alpha-ERD), such a response has been associated previously with sensory and cognitive processing of external stimuli including vision, auditory and somatosensory cues. Alpha-ERD in response to the geomagnetic field was triggered only by horizontal rotations when the static vertical magnetic field was directed downwards, as it is in the Northern Hemisphere; no brain responses were elicited by the same horizontal rotations when the static vertical component was directed upwards. This implicates a biological response tuned to the ecology of the local human population, rather than a generic physical effect.

 

Biophysical tests showed that the neural response was sensitive to static components of the magnetic field. This rules out all forms of electrical induction (including artifacts from the electrodes) which are determined solely on dynamic components of the field. The neural response was also sensitive to the polarity of the magnetic field. This rules out free-radical 'quantum compass' mechanisms like the cryptochrome hypothesis, which can detect only axial alignment. Ferromagnetism remains a viable biophysical mechanism for sensory transduction and provides a basis to start the behavioral exploration of human magnetoreception.

 

Significance Statement Although many migrating and homing animals are sensitive to Earth?s magnetic field, most humans are not consciously aware of the geomagnetic stimuli that we encounter in everyday life. Either we have lost a shared, ancestral magnetosensory system, or the system lacks a conscious component with detectable neural activity but no apparent perceptual awareness by us. We found two classes of ecologically-relevant rotations of Earth-strength magnetic fields that produce strong, specific and repeatable effects on human brainwave activity in the EEG alpha band (8-13 Hz); EEG discriminates in response to different geomagnetic field stimuli. Biophysical tests rule out all except the presence of a ferromagnetic transduction element, such as biologically-precipitated crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4).

Trump administration to stop detaining some migrant families at border: report

 

The Trump administration will reportedly stop detaining some migrant families who illegally cross the border in Texas as it copes with overcrowding in detention facilities.

 

The Wall Street Journal, citing government officials, said authorities will begin releasing hundreds of families caught each day in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, rather than referring the families to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for detention.

 

Under current policy, families who cross the border are detained while they await court proceedings. Families typically get released after a maximum of 20 days, as families with children can't be detained for longer than that under federal law.

 

According to the Journal, the exact number of families who will be immediately released will depend on the room available in detention facilities. Under the policy, the families who are released will first be processed by Border Patrol and, after they are released, they will be instructed to return for court proceedings.

 

The policy would be at odds with President Trump's opposition to the practice called "catch and release," in which families who are detained after crossing the border are later released. Trump has often railed against the policy, including when he said last year that border agents "are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release."

 

Trump last year also signed an order to end "catch and release," though the policy can't be ended by executive order and the practice has continued.

 

Officials told the newspaper that crowding and safety concerns prompted them to make the change. The Journal noted that conditions at detention facilities has come under scrutiny in recent years. Multiple children have died in recent months in the custody of Border Patrol.

 

Thousands of migrants have crossed the border near the Rio Grande Valley in recent months. Between the beginning of October and the end of February, more than 58,000 migrants have been arrested in the area for crossing the border illegally, according to the Journal.

The MSM has written hundreds of articles about Q (into the thousands if you include all the ones that are retrieved with the search time "qanon" many of which just take a swipe at Q in pasting). The anti-Q articles in the last week are mostly aimed at 8chan due to the Christchurch shooter scenario.

 

WAPO went into overdrive regarding this shooting incident, seeing it as a chance to really pounce of what they call "right wing extremism." At least FIVE articles right away, all saying 80% the same thing. They flood the public square with articles like these, each with a separate author, so it looks like you've got independent stories.

 

The article I focused on is particularly striking because, in THREE SHORT PARAGRAPHS, it manages to move from saying "hey, this right wing groups don't look too bad" to the "Daily Stormer," like so:

FOMC Drift Dead As Global Stocks Slide Ahead Of Fed

 

After yesterday's last day selloff, the FOMC Drift is again missing again this morning, with S&P futures in the red following a drop in Asian shares and a bigger slump in Europe, where the Brexit chaos returned after May said she would not seek a long delay from the EU while a sharp drop in Bayer and BMW shares dragged Germany's DAX 1% lower. The dollar rose and ten-year Treasury yields slipped.

 

US equity futures erased an earlier gain, as nervous investors sold ahead of today's FOMC meeting, with the mood souring on Tuesday after reports of renewed tensions in U.S.-China trade talks also fraying nerves.

 

As a result, the longest winning streak in global shares since 2017 was set to end with a whimper as investors took profits on Wednesday before the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy decision, ending 7 consecutive days of increases in the MSCI World.

 

Europe's STOXX 600 fell 0.3%, with indexes in Britain and France also slightly down as investors closed positions before the Fed’s decision, due at 2pm this afternoon.

 

Germany’s DAX led the retreat as BMW warned earnings would fall and chemical maker Bayer headed for the biggest drop in 16 years after the company lost the first phase of a U.S. jury trial over claims its Roundup weed killer causes cancer. The steep decline has a negative impact of almost 100 points on the DAX. Additionally, German automaker BMW stumbled 4.2%, after warning earnings will fall “well below” last year’s level. If "PATRIOTS ARE IN CONTROL" we'd probably be confused about whether they were in control or were not. I do not believe that Saddam wanted the US to believe he had WMDs. There was no point in that. He wasn't scared of us. What he was scared of, who his was at war with, was Iran. Saddam wanted Iran to believe he had far greater resources than he actually did. It backfired by having the West use this as a justification for war.
