Breakthrough technology and other impressions from my stop in China.

Right after Melinda and I spoke at Stanfordโ€™s graduation, I took off for a quick trip to Beijing. As is often the case when I come to China, I packed a lot into two days. I left town excited about the partnerships weโ€™re developing between the foundation and the Chinese government and enthused about technology I got to see under development.

 

One of the things Iโ€™m proudest of from my time at Microsoft is the creation and growth of Microsoft Research (MSR). Microsoft came to China very early and was one of the first multinational companies to set up a dedicated research group here. As a result, we were able to recruit amazing talent; while Iโ€™m certainly biased, I think MSR-Asia holds a nearly unique place in China and continues to attract fantastic computer scientists. I spent a couple of hours looking at work theyโ€™re doing on search linguistics, photo recognition, and data center management. All breakthrough work, and all of it potentially very important to Microsoftโ€™s future. Not all of it will end up being included in products, but all of it was fascinating.

 

While I was there, I got to spend some time at a tech incubator program that MSR-Asia hosts for promising young Chinese entrepreneurs. Each six-month session brings in 15 to 20 startups and provides them space, mentors, technology tools, an introduction to potential sources of venture capital, and the chance to connect with potential partners. Itโ€™s a wildly popular program in China and has to turn away 25 applicants for each one accepted. After two years, 90 percent of the companies have been funded.

 

The energy was contagious and I got to see some really interesting projects dealing with everything from peer-to-peer lending to job-finding solutions for Chinaโ€™s enormous migrant population to 3-D rendering from normal video camera images. I was impressed with these young entrepreneursโ€™ desire to make a real difference for people in China.

 

In the afternoon I got the chance to sit down with Alibabaโ€™s Jack Ma, who recently made a very generous commitment along with his business partner, Joe Tsai, to establish charitable trusts. Those commitments set a benchmark in Chinese philanthropy. Jack has long been an advocate for giving in China, so I was really pleased that he came to Beijing so we could get some time together. Jack brought together a good group of business and philanthropy leaders for dinner, and it was terrific to talk about philanthropy in China and around the world.

 

One of the government officials I met with while in town, Vice Premier Wang Yang, said something that I was struck by: โ€œAfrica today is our yesterday.โ€ Chinaโ€™s ability to raise hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in the course of two generations is unprecedented in human history. And the country continues to work on raising the standard of living of its own poor. But these efforts are recent enough that China has the expertise and experience to be of tremendous assistance to places like Africa. Work with their small-holder farmers can translate into big advances for small African farmers. Chinaโ€™s experience with delivering basic health care across its vast territory is a remarkable resource as we look to doing the same for many African countries.

 

A great two days. I started the week with Melinda talking about the power of optimism at Stanford, and then witnessed the same here in China. And left more optimistic myself.

Would you trust an app used to track your COVID19 status and all those you "may" have been near in the last month?

 

If you can't even trust the Australian COVID19 tests, this seems an ideal way to "quarantine" anybody you don't like.

 

Aus gov't says app is "not mandatory". I'll add, "for now."

 

But even if not mandatory, most Aussies are still overly trusting sheep and they will dutifully download the app. What happens when your co-worker, friend or neighbor uses the app and then reports contact with you? The origin and induction: The musculoskeletal system of the trunk originates from a common embryonic structure called the somite. Somites are segmented mesodermal units flanking both sides of the spinal cord. Their reiterated pattern is the basis for the repeated organization of the trunk. Under the inductive influence of adjacent tissues, cells within the somite give rise to muscles and bones. We have developed a 3-dimensional culture system that allows characterization of crucial long-range and contact-dependent cellular interactions that induce early skeletal and muscle fates. Our efforts toward designing new methods and assays to track somite development have enabled us to make novel observations.

 

Induction of the axial skeletal progenitors: We have identified the Hedgehog (Hh) proteins responsible for inducing the early skeletal fate. Hh largely utilizes evolutionarily conserved downstream mediators for inductive signaling. In addition, we also found a vertebrate-specific cell surface Hh binding protein Gas1. Gas1 mutants display skeletal defects related to or due to altered Hh signaling. Mechanistically, Gas1 helps transform the Hh diffusion gradient into its observed signaling activity gradient. This unexpected mechanism provides a new vision of Hh signaling pathway initiation and has direct implications for the long-range action of Hh.

 

Induction of the early embryonic muscle: Conversely, the Wnt family of proteins plays a key role in inducing the dermis/muscle dual potential progenitors. Combining our in vitro assay with microarrays analyses, we have uncovered previously unknown effectors and target genes of Wnt. Using an ex vivo whole embryo culture system coupled with somite-specific gene delivery, we discovered an unconventional pathway for Wnt signaling via the adenylyl cyclase/protein kinase A/Creb cascade that selectively activates myogenic transcriptional determinants Myf5 and MyoD.

 

Embryonic and adult muscle stem cells: Somites not only supply cells for embryonic muscles, but also contain muscle progenitors. The proliferative capacity of these progenitors depends upon the transcription factors Pax3 and Pax7. Both genes are activated by Wnt. Using inducible cell lineage tracing, we have found that early Pax7-expressing somitic cells directly give rise to adult muscle stem cells, i.e. the satellite cells. Professor Didier Raoult Releases the Results of a New Hydroxychloroquine Treatment Study on 1061 Patients

 

The new study, of which the abstract was released today, was performed at IHU Mรฉditerranรฉe Infection, Marseille, France. A cohort of 1061 COVID-19 patients, treated for at least 3 days with the Hydroxychloroquine-Azithromycin (HCQ-AZ) combination and a follow-up of at least 9 days was investigated. Key findings are: No cardiac toxicity was observed. A good clinical outcome and virological cure was obtained in 973 patients within 10 days (91.7%).

 

A poor outcome was observed for 46 patients (4.3%); 10 were transferred to intensive care units, 5 patients died (0.47%) (74-95 years old) and 31 required 10 days of hospitalization or more. The authors conclude that: The HCQ-AZ combination, when started immediately after diagnosis, is a safe and efficient treatment for COVID-19, with a mortality rate of 0.5%, in elderly patients. It avoids worsening and clears virus persistence and contagiosity in most cases.โ€

 

Background In a recent survey, most physicians worldwide considered that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and azithromycin (AZ) are the two most effective drugs among available molecules against COVID-19. Nevertheless, to date, one preliminary clinical trial only has demonstrated its efficacy on the viral load. Additionally, a clinical study including 80 patients was published, and in vitro efficiency of this association was demonstrated.

Methods The study was performed at IHU Mรฉditerranรฉe Infection, Marseille, France. A cohort of 1061 COVID-19 patients, treated for at least 3 days with the HCQ-AZ combination and a follow-up of at least 9 days was investigated. Endpoints were death, worsening and viral shedding persistence.

Findings From March 3rd to April 9th, 2020, 59,655 specimens from 38,617 patients were tested for COVID-19 by PCR. Of the 3,165 positive patients placed in the care of our institute, 1061 previously unpublished patients met our inclusion criteria. Their mean age was 43.6 years old and 492 were male (46.4%). No cardiac toxicity was observed. A good clinical outcome and virological cure was obtained in 973 patients within 10 days (91.7%). Prolonged viral carriage at completion of treatment was observed in 47 patients (4.4%) and was associated to a higher viral load at diagnosis (p < 10-2) but viral culture was negative at day 10 and all but one were PCR-cleared at day 15. A poor outcome was observed for 46 patients (4.3%); 10 were transferred to intensive care units, 5 patients died (0.47%) (74-95 years old) and 31 required 10 days of hospitalization or more. Among this group, 25 patients are now cured and 16 are still hospitalized (98% of patients cured so far). Poor clinical outcome was significantly associated to older age (OR 1.11), initial higher severity (OR 10.05) and low hydroxychloroquine serum concentration. In addition, both poor clinical and virological outcomes were associated to the use of selective beta-blocking agents and angiotensin II receptor blockers (P<0.05). Mortality was significantly lower in patients who had received 3 days of HCQ-AZ than in patients treated with other regimens both at IHU and in all Marseille public hospitals (p< 10-2).

Interpretation The HCQ-AZ combination, when started immediately after diagnosis, is a safe and efficient treatment for COVID-19, with a mortality rate of 0.5%, in elderly patients. It avoids worsening and clears virus persistence and contagiosity in most cases.

Potus can gain support as Roosevelt did with the TVA, however RDP will be focused on economic principals of the People and will allow a person's labor to be a appreciable commodity, as opposed to our economic system whereby financial groups capital appreciates as labor value and peoples worth depreciates.

 

1- Jobs: We develop a plan of full manufacturing within the US, we make everything that we currently import, at least a certain % goal based upon independent factors for each industry product, we protect noone's overseas industry in establishing our goals. We base our goals/buid out on national security and manufacturing independence of critical supply chain and consumer durable items, as well as key sectors that give us a trade surplus overall.

We maintain a positive trade balance whereby we become a net exporting country, this gives us the ability to better justify our investment because we will have the ability to sell a net surplus of what we produce. Also and most importantly this gives any currency we have or go to in the future, tremendous strength, as we will import more currency than we export, as we move to alternative blockchain or specia based money this is crucial.

The jobs plan ensures that unemployment is low and will grant the labor of the people strength to appreciate, as Potus says wages go up and people can pick their jobs, that is what quality of life is about. The greatest economic expansions and those most readily seen are a bottom up approach. As people make more money local economies benefit first and regional and national economies as a direct result.

2- Housing/Transportation and Quality of Life: Housing costs increase because the land value increses, construction costs rise relative to inflation and at a much lower rate. Zoning laws and restricting land use is the factor involved in people not being able to afford a house, or affordable rents. Again we are not paying high prices for the construction costs of the house, we are paying it in land values. Another example how a persons labor became devalued relative to commerce. In virtually every area of the country house values are double or more the cost of construction, so we pay as much for the land as the house, yet land is plentiful and everywhere vacant (outside of metro areas), zoning restricts the land uses, and with mass rezoning the cost savings from not paying high land prices can finance utility infrastructure costs needed to develop new towns and cities. Covid19 has decimated cities due to density of population and can be cited for justifying developing lower density living in america.

So we have land rezoned, federal land opened up free for creating new cities. We mitigate any market losses to land owners, but give speculators a little time to exit positions. Market losses to rural land owners who have undeveloped tracts with no utility service will be minimal because the land generally is not overvalued, we do not allow owners to capture market appreciation as a direct result of our RIDP, no selling out the taxpayer and people. If landowners do not offer a good price we find another land for new towns. Again we do not let them capture value as a direct result of our plan and provide notice of such. Yes it will change the game for the system, however it is a rigged system. Land is everywhere vacant and we cant live there because of zoning? While properly zoned land skyrockets to millions an acre in cities? The land use/zoning game is the biggest injustice and form of manipulation and wealth transfer from the people to the commercial system in america.

Town Building and Planning with New Industry: We plan our industrial, manufacturing areas to be centrally located, with new towns and cities spread around it, we reserve that space for that use and limit residential development in those centers to prevent the rebirth of high population density centers like todays cities which create crime and health issues.

This also will allow smooth traffic and easy commutes from the homes of people to their central work areas. We use this pattern to create many hubs as opposed to huge mega hubs like NY, instead of NY we recreate that volume of business in up to 20 smaller hubs. Demographic movements will shift greatly and unpopulated states will become developed at a high percentage but at a lower overall density. The incentive to relocate? Free or low cost goverment land whereby each family is granted a 1 acre acre or so parcel to build a house on. The infrastructure for utilities like sewer, water etc. is backed by gov and financed by utlities using revenue projection models. Since everything is well planned utilities can be planned efficiently and any increase in utility costs will be minor relative to the costs saved by low priced or free land. The average family will be able to get a house for a target price of under $100 a square foot and with free land and low interest rates a mortage of $500 a month for a 2000 sq foot dwelling. We have treasury issue mortgages directly instead of the fed buying them at premiums via sallie, freddie etc, so based on 0 - .025 TBill rates mortgages can be originated by treasury and granted/given/held by banks to service with a 1.5 % service spread resulting in mortgages under 3%. We go to a 15 or 20 year average mortage in america. 2,000sq ft for $500 a month is achievable and people are making money along the way, just not a small group making it all.

Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, Laura and Jason Henke awoke with a start at their home in Minot, N.D. Their dog was barking wildly. At the door, in the early morning shadows, they found a police officer and, behind him, a pastor. The officer asked to see Lauraโ€™s ID to confirm that he was at the correct address. Then he told them that their 18-year-old son, Bailey, was dead.

 

The officer didnโ€™t have many details. Bailey Henke was living in Grand Forks, three hours east of his parentsโ€™ home in Minot, and the police there were working the case. The officer gave Laura the phone number for a detective in Grand Forks. She called and wrote down what he said: overdose, fentanyl. Laura had never heard of fentanyl; she wasnโ€™t even sure how to spell it.

 

After a few minutes, the officer and the pastor left. A heavy snowstorm had closed the roads, leaving Laura and Jason unable to reach Grand Forks that night. They spent the dark hours sitting on the couch, waiting for the storm to clear, moving in and out of spasms of inconsolable crying. They mostly passed the time in silence. Their son was dead. What was there to say?

 

Before that knock on the door, Laura was certain that she knew everything about Bailey. She was the person he talked to when he had his first crush, and when he started dating his first girlfriend; she knew that he loved wearing Halloween costumes on random days throughout the year because it reminded him of playing dress-up as a kid; she laughed at the funny accents he practiced, at the dorky jokes only the two of them shared. In high school, Bailey was beloved. His teachers teased him about his โ€œclown car,โ€ because so many of the other students wanted to pile in to join him for lunch break. He was the type of kid that teachers remember, that they keep talking about for years.

 

When Bailey was a junior in high school, Laura caught him smoking pot in the basement. She said he had to stop, and he was apologetic, embarrassed, not defiant. She thought that was the end of it. Bailey just learned to be more discreet. His drug habit became worse in the fall of 2014, when he dropped out of community college after only a few months of classes and moved in with one of his best friends, Kain Schwandt, in Grand Forks. By the time they became roommates, Schwandt was using heroin multiple times a day. Bailey told his friends that he had tried heroin a few times over that summer. Living together, they both used more and more, until they found something even stronger.

 

Schwandtโ€™s fentanyl connection was a friend of a friend, a local teenager named Ryan Jensen. Schwandt experimented with fentanyl before he began buying from Jensen, but it was in the form of a medicinal patch, a legitimate pharmaceutical product diverted from its intended use as a pain reliever. The powder Jensen sold was cheaper and more potent, and a small amount lasted a long time. Some medicinal patches held 100 micrograms and cost $300-$400. Ten milligrams of the powder โ€” 100 times more than the patch โ€” cost $10 and kept you high all day. The danger, too, was significantly greater, but once Schwandt tried the powder, he was hooked.

 

Jensen, the dealer, was quiet, introverted and brainy. He tried explaining to Schwandt once how he bought fentanyl and where it came from, but Schwandt wasnโ€™t interested. โ€œHe said he got it on this website, and mentioned Bitcoin,โ€ Schwandt told me. โ€œItโ€™s like he was speaking Chinese.โ€ At first, Jensen only bought for himself; he wasnโ€™t in it to make money, his friends told me. The allure of fentanyl was that it didnโ€™t show up on standard drug screenings. Once word got out, people started coming over to Jensenโ€™s house to get high with him. His mother later confided to Schwandtโ€™s mother that she was just happy he had friends.

 

Jensen had a system, according to those who used with him. He knew that fentanyl was so potent that even a small dose could be deadly, so he liked to be there to make sure nothing went wrong. When he sold it, it was in carefully measured amounts. He gave it only to people he knew and trusted. Schwandt was one of those people; after coming over enough times with Schwandt, Bailey became one, too. The night Bailey died, just a few months after he began using, Jensen broke one of his rules: After they smoked together, he let Bailey leave with several doses.

You can also convert music recorded at 440 A to 432 A. That's the main point of talking about A 440 and A 432, changing the music, changing old music, making new music.

You can run it through Audacity and shift the pitch down by a factor of 1-(432/440)=0.0182. You probably won't hear any difference.

Everyone's inner-ear anatomy is a little different. What my brain hears as 440Hz is not necessarily what your brain hears at the same pitch. It would be close enough that the psychological effects of the first order-of-magnitude, maybe some of the second, would be the same. But those 8Hz doesn't mean squat in absolute terms.

After the fall court term, Spink applied for a change of venue to the court in Urbana. Chiniquy hired the lawyer Abraham Lincoln to defend him. The spring court action in Urbana was the highest profile libel suit in Lincoln's career.[2] The case was ended in the fall court session by agreement.[3]

 

Chiniquy clashed with the Bishop of Chicago, Anthony O'Regan, over the bishop's treatment of Catholics in the city, particularly French Canadians. He said that O'Regan was secretly backing Spink's suit against him. Chiniquy said that in 1856, O'Regan had threatened him with excommunication if he did not go to a new location where the bishop wanted to assign him. Several months later, the New York Times published a pastoral letter from Bishop O'Regan in which he stated that he had suspended Chiniquy. Since the priest had continued his normal duties as a priest, the bishop excommunicated him by his letter.

 

Chiniquy vigorously disputed that he had been excommunicated, saying publicly that the bishop was mistaken. Chiniquy left the Roman Catholic Church in 1858.[2] He claimed that the church was pagan, that Roman Catholics worshipped the Virgin Mary, that its theology spoils the Gospel, and that its theology is anti-Christian.[4] He also claimed that the Vatican had planned to take over the United States by importing Catholic immigrants from Ireland, Germany and France. This was at a time of high immigration rates from those countries, in response to social (the Great Famine in Ireland) and political upheaval (revolutions in Germany and France.)

 

Chiniquy claimed that he was falsely accused by his superiors (and that Abraham Lincoln had come to his rescue), that the American Civil War was a plot against the United States of America by the Vatican, and that the Vatican was behind the Confederate cause, and the death of President Lincoln, and that Lincoln's assassins were faithful Roman Catholics ultimately serving Pope Pius IX.

 

After leaving the Catholic Church, Chiniquy dedicated his life to trying to win his fellow French Canadians, as well as others, from Catholicism to the Protestant faith. He wrote a number of books and tracts expressing his views on the alleged errors in the faith and practises of the Roman Catholic Church. His two most influential works are Fifty Years in The Church of Rome[5] and The Priest, The Woman and The Confessional.[6] These books raised concerns in the United States about the Catholic Church. According to one Canadian biographer, Chiniquy is Canada's best-selling author of all time.[7]

 

He joined the Orange Order and said of it "I always found them staunch and true. I consider it a great honour to be an Orangeman. Every time I go on my knees I pray that God may bless them and make them as numerous and bright as the stars of the heaven above."[8]

 

He died in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on January 16, 1899.

 

To this day, some of Chiniquy's works are still promoted among Protestants and Sola scriptura believers. I taught myself to play/fingerpick guitar on my own. Nobody taught me. Wish I had a teacher, but sometimes I'm thankful because nobody can really do what I do (or at least I think).
