"Having tumbled yesterday on the first set of headlines reporting on the Trump administration's plans to seek 'COVID reparations' amid accusations of Chinese 'meddling' in the US election (obviously not in favor of Trump), the Chinese yuan legged dramatically lower in this evening's illiquid session which sees most of Asia closed for May Day, after Bloomberg reports that Trump is exploring blocking a government retirement fund from investing in Chinese equities considered a national security risk.

Trump made his initial threats from the Rose Garden at the White House Monday after he was pressed by a reporter over a German newspaper report suggesting that China should be issued a $160 billion invoice for the impact on Europe's economy.

The president responded he had a "much easier" idea:

"We have ways of doing things a lot easier than that," Trump told the coronavirus press briefing. "Germany’s looking at things, and we’re looking at things, and we’re talking about a lot more money than Germany’s talking about."

"We haven’t determined the final amount yet. It’s very substantial," Trump added, suggesting it would be significantly more than the $160 billion floated in German media."

The IRS announced charges against Israel’s largest bank on Thursday for helping wealthy New Yorkers and other U.S. citizens shelter assets in offshore accounts.

The tax agency’s criminal division filed charges against Bank Hapoalim B.M. and registered a guilty plea from its Swiss subsidiary for conspiring with U.S. taxpayers to hide more than $7.6 billion throughout more than 5,500 accounts, along with the income generated by those accounts, from U.S. tax authorities. The alleged scheme took place between 2002 and 2014.

Authorities said the bank failed to prevent wealthy U.S. citizens from hiding their cash in these offshore accounts, but actively helped them facilitate the fraudulent activity – including helping U.S. taxpayers file false returns and opening accounts under pseudonyms.

New Yorkers were particularly singled out for their role in the scheme – the bank has global outposts in both New York and Miami. The bank is paying the state a $220 million penalty. No other specific states were mentioned or appear to be receiving a penalty.

“There is no excuse for a foreign financial institution to unlawfully assist wealthy Americans in flouting their responsibilities to pay their taxes,” IRS Criminal Investigation Chief Don Fort said in a statement.

It is unclear what action, if any, will be taken against the individuals involved.

Overall, the Israeli bank and its Swiss subsidiary will cough up $874.27 million – marking the second-largest recovery by the Department of Justice since it began honing in on individuals and entities unlawfully sheltering assets in tax havens.

The IRS began an extensive crackdown on offshore accounts in the mid- to late-2000s, after a whistleblower revealed that Swiss Bank UBS was helping U.S. taxpayers avoid payments.

In 2018, the IRS ended its Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program, which allowed taxpayers to confess their secret accounts and pay a heavy fine in exchange for potential protection from criminal liability.

An online leaking collective has dumped close to 10 million internal messages from over 100 Discord servers run by neo-Nazis and QAnon conspiracy theorists in a new searchable database.

Dubbed “Project Whispers,” the massive cache of data made available by Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoS)—a group of journalists, activists and technologists dedicated to providing a secure platform to leak sensitive data in service of the public interest—is the newest in a wave of dumps involving neo-Nazi and far-right servers.

In November, activists dumped the logins, emails, and IP addresses of users of IronMarch, a now defunct neo-Nazi forum that was once infamously the birthplace of the domestic terror group Atomwaffen Division and the congregation point for the global, violent far-right movement. The leaks from that dump have since helped expose the identities of several neo-Nazi extremists, including U.S. servicemen.

The leak symbolically comes on the 75th anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s suicide and Lorax B. Horne, the editor-in-chief of DDoS, tweeted they hoped it could lead to more exposures of online neo-Nazis who often post anonymously in hard-to-find forums.

“To celebrate 75 years exactly since the death of Hitler,” they tweeted, “you are hereby invited to dox your local neighbourhood Nazis.”

Emma Best, a national security journalist and co-founder of DDS, told Motherboard the dump contains intelligence on a wide variety of far-right extremists and their associated movements, as well as several unmistakably neo-Nazi servers.

“Project Whispers currently includes over 900,000 messages from servers dedicated to QAnon (identified by the FBI as a possible terrorist threat),” they said. “Over 100,000 messages from the 'Trump Republic,' and groups organizing under server names like '14 Words,' 'Nordic Frontier' (seemingly connected to the Nordic Resistance Movement), 'Official/pol/' (a reference to 4chan/8chan), 'The German Reich,' 'The Based Club, 'Nazi Germany,' and 'Waffen-SS.'"

Colorado reclassifies three deaths as coronavirus cases after physicians ruled them unrelated

Three nursing home deaths have been reclassified as coronavirus deaths in Colorado despite doctors at the facility previously ruling them as not related to the virus.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reclassified the deaths of three people living at the Someren Glen nursing home.

“We were informed of their (CDPHE) intention to override some of our physician’s rulings and reclassify some resident passings we have experienced in the last few weeks,” said Tim Rogers, executive director at the facility.

An additional four other residents have also died at the facility, but the physicians ruled their deaths were directly related to the virus.

“We have never seen a situation where the health department overrules a physician’s findings. However, these are unprecedented times, and the health department official did not share their motivation for changing physician’s orders,” he said.

The Department of Public Health and Environment said it follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when coding patients’ deaths. The department said the seven residents who recently died at the facility tested positive for COVID-19, but it’s unclear if they were tested before or after their deaths.

“The department follows the CDC’s case definition of COVID-19 cases and deaths … When a person with a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 dies, their death is automatically counted as a COVID-19 death unless there is another cause that completely rules out COVID-19, such as a fatal physical injury. A preexisting illness would not rule out COVID-19,” a department spokesman said.

A coroner in the area shut down the idea that coronavirus deaths are being inflated.

“I personally don’t think there’s a big conspiracy to overinflate the numbers,” Dr. Kelly Lear said.

The news comes as local governments grapple with how to code deaths with the influx of coronavirus patients.

“I think, in this country, we've taken a very liberal approach to mortality. And I think the reporting here has been pretty straightforward over the last five to six weeks,” Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said this month.

“If someone dies with COVID-19, we are counting that as a COVID-19 death,” Birx said.

The discrepancy between “confirmed” and “probable” deaths has also been an issue, for example, in Pennsylvania.

Officials there were forced to remove 200 names from the state’s coronavirus death tracker after coroners reported their numbers did not match what the state's department of health reported.

“There’s a discrepancy in the numbers,” Charles Kiessling Jr., president of the Pennsylvania Coroners Association, told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’m not saying there’s something going on … I’m not a conspiracy theory guy. But accuracy is important.”

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon called for an international investigation into the Chinese Communist Party's response to the coronavirus.

During a Thursday morning appearance on CNBC, Bannon claimed Beijing engaged in a cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak, which began in Wuhan in late 2019, and called the Chinese government the "enemy" of the rest of humanity.

"The Chinese Communist Party knew about this. They turned a blind eye to it, and particularly when they had it in their own country, they tried to protect it going around the rest of China, but they didn't care about it going around the rest of the world," Bannon said. "They're the enemy of the Chinese people, they're the enemy of the citizens of the United States, and they're an enemy of mankind."

"We've got 30 million people unemployed. You have, what, hundreds of thousands of people around the world dead, you have economic carnage everywhere, and remember, it's not just the cash we put in, it's the opportunity cost of what we've had to forgo," Bannon said. "The Chinese Communist Party … they are knowingly responsible for this, as the president said."

China has denied orchestrating a cover-up of its coronavirus response, even as its official death toll numbers are in doubt.

The White House reportedly ordered spy agencies to dig through intelligence communications to assess whether the Chinese Communist Party and the World Health Organization worked together to cover up the extent of damage posed by the coronavirus. Two-thirds of Americans say voting by mail would increase voter fraud, poll finds

Findings include 48% of Democrats who say nixing in-person voting for the mailbox would trigger fraud.

Nearly two-thirds of American voters say the country moving entirely to mail-in voting would likely increase voter fraud, according to the latest Just the News Daily Poll with Scott Rasmussen.

Sixty-two percent (62%) of voters believe that having everyone vote by mail is likely to increase voter fraud, while just 29% disagree. The totals include 39% who believe an increase in fraud is Very Likely and just 15% who say it is Not at All Likely.

Rasmussen noted what he called "a massive partisan divide" – 81% of Republicans believe voting by mail would lead to more fraud. Democrats are evenly divided (48% say it’s likely, 45% disagree). Among Independent voters, 59% believe it would probably lead to an increase in voter fraud while 27% disagree.

"These findings are certainly influenced by each party’s narrative of voter fraud," Rasmussen said. "Republicans tend to believe that many people vote who are not eligible to vote. Voting by mail makes it impossible to check voter IDs and take other steps to ensure that the ballots were actually cast by an eligible voters.

"Democrats on the other hand tend to believe that the bigger problem is that eligible voters are denied their right to cast a ballot through voter suppression tactics. They see voting by mail as encouraging voter participation and are suspicious of anyone who opposes that goal."

Just the News has reported on how Democrats appear united in their push to use “social distancing” around coronavirus to move the country toward November mail-in voting, expanded voting dates or possibly even “drive-thru voting.”

Republicans suspect Democrats could be exploiting a health crisis for partisan gain. Some fear a rapid move to alter the General Election system could result in the type of chaos seen at the Iowa Democratic Caucus in February.

"Still, despite concerns about voter fraud, Americans are open to the idea if better alternatives are not presented," Rasmussen said. "Some public polls have shown an overwhelming preference for mail voting as opposed to the traditional approach of standing in long lines at crowded facilities. However, our poll last week showed that just as many are supportive of states establishing new in-person voting procedures that include appropriate social distancing protocols."

Respondents were asked: “Suppose that for November’s presidential election, in-person voting was eliminated, and everyone would vote by mail. How likely is it that voting by mail would lead to an increase in voter fraud?" They replied as below:

23% Somewhat likely

14% Not very likely

15% Not at all likely

9% Not sure

The national survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted April 23-25, 2020 by Rasmussen, a polling veteran. Margin of sampling error: +/- 2.8% for full sample.

The Education Department’s investigation into the UT System’s disclosures is part of a continuing national review begun in 2019 that the department says has prompted universities to report more than $6.5 billion in previously undisclosed foreign funding. Officials have sent letters to at least eight other schools, including Harvard and Yale Universities, who have said they are responding to the inquiries.

In its letter dated April 24, the department asked the chancellor of the University of Texas System to provide records related to its dealings with the Wuhan lab, citing UT’s Galveston National Laboratory’s relationship with the Chinese government-run lab.

The letter cites a November 2018 article in Science magazine cosigned by officials at the Galveston and Wuhan labs stating: “We engaged in short- and long-term personnel exchanges focused on biosafety training, building operations and maintenance, and collaborative scientific investigations in biocontainment. We succeeded in transferring proven best practices to the new Wuhan facility.”

The magazine article, also available on the Galveston lab’s site, adds that the Wuhan and Texas labs recently signed formal cooperative agreements but that “funding for research and the logistics of exchanging specimens are challenges that we have yet to solve.”

"U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fresh wave of criticism against U.S. law enforcement agents as lawyers for his former national-security adviser, Michael Flynn, disclosed internal FBI documents in their attempt to have Flynn’s criminal conviction overturned.

Flynn was among the first individuals swept up in the U.S. investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump election campaign team in 2016.

He was fired by Trump in February 2017, having served as national-security adviser for only 24 days, after it emerged that he’d lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

In December 2017, Flynn pleaded guilty on charges of lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador.

But Trump says the FBI documents disclosed by Flynn's lawyers have led him to believe that Flynn should be cleared in court.
