LOS ANGELES β€”Β Eight firefighters remained hospitalized Sunday after being hurt in an explosion at a hash oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles that sent crews running for their lives when a ball of flames shot out of the building and scorched a fire truck across the street.

 

The blast Saturday evening injured a dozen firefighters including some who ran out onto sidewalks, where they tore off their burning protective equipment including melted helmets, officials said.

 

β€œThe was one of the worst scenes I’ve seen,” said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott.

 

He said β€œone significant explosion” shook the neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters inside had to run through a wall of flames he estimated as 30 feet high and wide, and those on the roof scrambled down a ladder that was engulfed in fire.

 

Three firefighters were released after spending the night in the hospital, fire department spokesman Nicholas Prange said Sunday. Of the eight that remained hospitalized, two were in critical but stable condition, he said. Officials initially announced that 11 firefighters were injured but Prange said a 12th was treated and released for a minor injury.

 

All were expected to survive.

 

β€œThe good news is everybody’s going to make it,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a late Saturday news conference outside the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center where all the injured were treated.

 

β€œThings could have been so much worse,” said Los Angeles Fire Department Medical Director Dr. Marc Eckstein, who works at the hospital and helped treat the injured.

 

Scott said people at the scene described the explosion as sounding like a freight train or jet engine.

 

Firefighters were called to 327 East Boyd St. in the city’s Toy District for a report of a fire at a one-story commercial building. There was light to moderate smoke when firefighters entered the building and went on the roof – normal procedures to try to quickly knock down any flames.

 

Los Angeles Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said one of the firefighters inside the building thought things didn’t seem right – the pressure from the smoke and heat coming from the rear of the building were increasing. He directed everyone to get out, and they quickly started exiting the building as it was rocked by the explosion.

 

Firefighters on the roof scrambled down ladders with their protective coats on fire. The wall of flames shot out the building and burned seats inside a fire truck across the street.

 

More than 200 firefighters rushed to the scene, and dozens of engines, trucks and rescue vehicles clogged the streets. The fire spread to several nearby buildings, but firefighters were able to douse it in about an hour.

 

The injured firefighters were rushed to the hospital. Those who remained at the scene, unaware of the seriousness of their colleagues’ injuries, were traumatized by what had transpired, Terrazas said.

 

β€œYou can imagine the amount of emotional stress,” he said.

 

Scott said the building was a warehouse for SmokeTokes, which he described as a maker of β€œbutane honey oil.” Butane is an odorless gas that easily ignites, and it’s used in the process to extract the high-inducing chemical THC from cannabis to create a highly potent concentrate also known as hash oil. The oil is used in vape pens, edibles, waxes and other products.

 

On its website, SmokeTokes advertises a variety of products including β€œpuff bars,” pipes, β€œdab” tools, vaporizers, β€œtorches and butane,” and cartridges. The company says it is β€œan international distributor and wholesaler of smoking and vaping products, and related accessories.” Founded in 2009, it offers β€œdiscounts to loyal customers, fast shipping, a huge catalog of products and customer service that is untouched.”

 

The cause of the fire is under investigation

Impromptu cruise takes over Vancouver’s Main Street

Hundreds cruised Main Street in downtown Vancouver on Friday evening, with a stream of cars stretching a mile-and-a-half north from Sixth Street.

Cruising Main Street was a weekend pastime in the 1950s, ’60 and ’70s. Clogged traffic and fights eventually led police to drive cruising out of downtown. In 2009, car enthusiasts revived cruising for one night a year each July and called it Cruisin’ the Gut. Trap Door Brewing owner Bryan Shull took over organizing that annual event, which was renamed Cruise the Couve in 2017. Shull said Friday’s cruise was unrelated to Cruise the Couve, which is canceled this year due to COVID-19 safety measures.

 

Vancouver police were out Friday monitoring Main Street traffic.

"I've never seen science politicized in 40 years of practice," says, Dr. William O'Neill, a cardiologist and Medical Director at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan, where clinical trials are being conducting with both hydroxychloroquine and remdesivir on COVID-19 patients.

Dr. O'Neill says some in the field believe there is some value with hydroxychloroquine and agrees the drug has to be tested, but wants everyone to "hold their powders," and eventually there will be more clarity on what treatment works.

To those patients prescribed hydroxychloroquine, Dr. O'Neill claims, "I have seen no single side effect of harm." Dr. O'Neill tells Full Measure that he has found value and improvement in all of the patients.

He is studying hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 preventative drug and has tested it on 400 patients.

 

Dr. Jane Orient, Executive Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), told Full Measure that those who support remdesivir may have some "conflicts of interests," and that the financial ties must be examined.

"I think you have to look at the money, says Dr. Orient, "There is no big money in hydroxychloroquine."

The reality is that all governors and mayors are supposed to have plans and systems in order and in place to address such an event as a natural disaster or bioweapon attack. Well I use free open-source gimp.

I would change a single pixel manually.

Actually any slight change you make to the image will change the hash completely. I don't know that byte count needs changed.

Any of the following undetectable graphic operations:

crop off 1 row or column

stretch 1 row or column

make your brush 1 pixel large and make 1 dot somewhere inconspicuous

Change format from jpg to png or vice versa

Slight change in contrast

Slight change in white point

I could go on.

It's very easy to change an image undetectably and save it.

 

You could probably find a script for gimp that would automagically do what you want. I don't have or use such a script and never looked for one. There are tons of gimp scripts (macros) you can download and install that can be programmed to change an image. You can set a keyboard shortcut to automate.

Coronavirus death toll reaches 4,140 as recoveries exceed 109,000

 

Turkey's confirmed cases of the coronavirus increased by 1,368 in the past 24 hours, and 44 more people have died, taking the death toll to 4,140, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on May 17.

A CT-114 Tutor training jet of the Canadian Air Force β€˜Snowbirds’ aerobatic team has crashed into a building in the city of Kamloops. The fate of the pilots is currently unknown.

On March 20, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy issued a new rule that no prescriptions for hydroxychloroquine or azithromycin could be dispensed without a diagnosis β€œconsistent with evidence for its use.”

 

β€œNever before have we had to turn in a diagnosis with a prescription,” Lozano toldΒ The Texan. Lozano has seen about five to six patients per week for coronavirus. β€œThey see a dramatic improvement within six to eight hours,” Lozano said.Β Β 

 

Health care attorney Matt Rinaldi said doctors have called him concerned about the requirement. He said the rule does not violate HIPAA regulations because patient information can be shared for treatment purposes.

 

β€œHIPAA is the bare minimum standard of privacy that patients expect, however,” Rinaldi added.

 

 

The Texas State Board of Pharmacy published the rule on its website with the explanation that it was meant to prevent hoarding of the medications during the coronavirus crisis.

 

β€œWe had pharmacists calling early on saying that people were asking for 400 tablets on some prescriptions. The Board members gave this guidance to pharmacists,” Allison Benz, executive director of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy toldΒ The Texan.

 

The rule was not guidance, but a mandate. It also included a 14-day supply limitation unless the patient was previously established on the medication. Hydroxychloroquine is often used to treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

 

On average, Lozano issues a prescription for COVID-19 treatment to last five days, about ten pills each of hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, and zinc. She said she learned about the treatment from one of President Trump’s press conferences and began investigating it.

 

Because of her concern for patient privacy that seemed incompatible with the unprecedented rule, Lozano contacted State Senator Bob Hall to ask for help reaching the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. Hall was concerned about the rule that seemed to be inhibiting the dispensing of these potentially life-saving prescriptions.Β 

 

β€œIn a few months, we may discover places where this combination could have saved a significant number of lives, but we had deaths because it was not used,” Hall toldΒ The Texan.

 

Additionally, he is concerned about β€œcollusion between the pharmacy board and pharmaceutical companies who want to prevent the use of an inexpensive drug while they develop a new, expensive drug.”

 

Hall said he contacted the Board of Pharmacy commissioners, executive director, and attorney about having the restriction removed.Β Β 

 

Over six weeks after the original rule was published, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy has recently changed its guidance to pharmacists about dispensing hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.Β Β

These showed up in boxes bundled together in packaging that β€œraises some concerns.” The key concern being if they have been contaminated. Media Must Report Truth Of Anti-Trump Spy Operation Before It’s Too Late For Them

 

As new details emerge about the Obama administration’s broad spying-and-leaking campaign against the incoming Trump administration, reporters have a choice to make about whether to cover this story honestly, at long last. There is a brief window of time afforded the media to get the story right. They should take advantage of it.

 

Journalist Lee Smith already noted the seriousness of the problem facing legacy media after the implosion of the Russia collusion conspiracy theory they peddled. β€œAmericans still want and need accurate information on which to base their decisions about their own lives and the path that the country should take. But neither the legacy media nor the expert class it sustains is likely to survive the post-dossier era in any recognizable form,” he wrote. β€œFor them, Russiagate is an extinction level event.”

 

Many of these people are simply in too deep. They’re not giving back the awards they got for peddling the false story uncritically. To do so is a level of honesty they are not currently capable of. But not everyone needs to follow them. For liberal media who want to be honest, there is plenty of ground between shouting β€œOBAMAGATE!” in all caps and denying the spying and leaking ever happened.

Reporters are clearly kowtowing to Democrats in fear that if they win in 2020, they’ll act with vengeance against any reporter who failed to follow their dictates. It is in this light that the courage of the Taibbis and Greenwalds should be particularly noted.

 

It was one thing to spin the Russia collusion hoax during a time of mass elite freakout. But now everyone knows it was false. The truth is an existential threat to journalists, which is why the more activist among them are scrambling to kill the story and paint it as a distraction. These reporters won book contracts, TV gigs, promotions, and political success by peddling the hoax. They truly can’t be honest about it.

But others who weren’t so complicit have a shot here. There is no getting out of this easy, so if there are any reporters who care about their reputation, much less the truth, they should get on the side of truth now.

Even OSX image Preview app lets you use Annotate in the Tools menu to let you add a few pixels to an image, or some text like a hashtag.

 

GIMP is a great app, and available for Windows, OSX, Linux etc, but it is a power tool like Photoshop.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, the profile of the World Health Organization has skyrocketed, and so have suspicions about its motives and alliances. Which is why this year's annual meeting of the organization's members - which is slated to begin on Monday - should get interesting.

 

As the US, Australia and other skeptical western states are expected to confront China and about the possibility of an investigation into Beijing's and the WHO's handling of the outbreak during its earliest days.

 

The coronavirus will be the focus for the World Health Assembly meeting, to be attended by all 194 WHO member states plus observers, and where policies and budgets are reviewed and approved.

 

But all eyes will be on how countries – including the US, Australia, Canada, France and Germany – pursue an investigation into China’s handling of the pandemic within the framework of the global health body. That could include taking the Chinese government to the international court.

 

Leaders of these countries have already made clear that they want an inquiry, including investigating the origin of the virus, whether it was initially covered up by China, and if Beijing was slow to tell the world that the virus was being transmitted between humans.

 

The WHO has itself been under fire, attacked for praising China’s pandemic response as β€œtransparent” despite Beijing’s suppression of whistle-blowers and information at the start of the outbreak.

 

Beijing has, of course, rejected accusations that it covered up the virus during the initial weeks after the outbreak, as well as claims the virus might have leaked or, worse, been purposefully released, by a biolab in Wuhan. 100 Chicago Churches to Hold In-Person Services Sunday Despite Stay Home Orders

 

 

As many as 100 Chicago area churches plan to hold in-person Sunday services in defiance of Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s (D) stay-at-home orders.

 

Pastor Florin Cimpean of the Philadelphia Romanian Church of God in Ravenswood said he expected around 50 to 60 people to attend services, which was about 10 percent of the congregation on a regular Sunday, according to ABC 7.

 

β€œThe church is a spiritual hospital, okay. We help people with their spiritual needs, emotional needs. And this church is much safer than any other open space like Home Depot, Costco, any type of store,” he commented.

 

Cimpean, who grew up in Soviet-controlled Romania, added that the church served an immigrant community that survived communism in the past and felt it was threatening their freedoms once again.

 

β€œAll of these restrictions, they sound more like communism,” he said at an event outside the Thompson Center on Thursday.

 

Former mayoral candidate Willie Wilson organized the gathering to give pastors a platform to voice their disagreement with Pritzker’s order, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

 

β€œNot even communists were able to completely shut down churches,” Cimpean stated. β€œWe are essential. The spiritual, emotional and mental impact of this [coronavirus] will probably be greater long-term than the medical one.”

 

However, after Wilson and others urged churches to reopen and called them β€œessential businesses,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she found the effort dangerous.

 

β€œThis is not playing Russian roulette. This is playing with a gun that’s fully loaded and cocked,” she claimed.

 

Wednesday on Twitter, Pritzker said there were no easy decisions during a pandemic and added that he had β€œsympathy for leaders struggling with those choices β€” but not for those so intent on disregarding science & logic that they put people’s lives at risk.”

 

β€œYou weren’t elected to do what’s easy. You were elected to do what’s right,” he continued.

 

Despite their warnings, Cimpean said Thursday that if violating the stay-at-home order meant being arrested, he was willing to face the consequences.

ORLANDO, Fla., May 17 (UPI) – The Air Force launched the sixth mission of the uncrewed X-37B spy plane toward orbit at 9:14 a.m. EDT Sunday from Florida with several experiments on board.

 

Space Force propelled the Boeing-built space plane atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, which is adjacent to Kennedy Space Center.

 

The mission start had been delayed from Saturday morning because of high winds at the launch site and a heavy cloud cover.

 

The launch was held following protocols because of tight restrictions on access to the Air Force station because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A former tech company CEO in Utah was sentenced to 210 days in jail and given a warning after he was caught having downloaded more than 13,000 images of sexual abuse, rape and beastiality.

 

Doug Saltsman, the 40-year-old former CEO of a defunct cryptocurrency company known as Saltmine, expressed remorse while in a Salt Lake City court as he faced up to 15 years in prison on convictions for three felonies relating to the seizure.

 

But Judge Douglas Hogan during Saltsman's sentencing Thursday gave him 210 days and 48 months of probation instead.

 

Because of time already served, Saltsman also may be out of jail in about two months.
