Greenbelt, Maryland – A federal grand jury in Maryland has returned an indictment charging Arthur Morgan, age 67, of Lorton, Virginia, with federal wire fraud charges, in connection with federal contracts to provide helmets, body armor, and other items to military and other federal entities. The indictment was returned on July 6, 2020.

 

The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur; Special Agent in Charge Eric D. Radwick of the General Services Administration (GSA) Office of Inspector General; Special Agent in Charge Ashan Benedict of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Washington Field Division; Special Agent in Charge John A. Salazar, Naval Criminal Investigative Service; and Special Agent in Charge Marc A. Meyer of the U.S. Department of State Office of Inspector General.

 

According to the indictment, Morgan is the Chief Executive Officer of Surveillance Equipment Group Inc. (SEG) and its relevant division, SEG Armor, both of which Morgan managed from Lorton, Virginia . The GSA enters into government-wide contracts with commercial firms to provide supplies and services that are available for use by federal agencies worldwide. All GSA contracts are subject to the Trade Agreements Act (TAA), which requires that all products listed on GSA contracts must be manufactured or β€œsubstantially transformed” in a β€œdesignated country.” China is not a designated country under the TAA. Contractors were not allowed, under these contracts, to supply products that did not comply with the TAA. Any such products would have been disqualified from eligibility under the contract. Further, a contractor’s failure to certify that its products complied with the TAA would have disqualified the contractor from eligibility for the contract. A contractor who falsely certified that a product was TAA compliant could not lawfully seek payment from the United States for that product.

 

The indictment alleges that Morgan falsely certified that the ballistic vests, helmets, riot gear, and other items he offered for sale were from designated countries, specifically, Hong Kong and the United States. The indictment alleges that while representing that none of SEG’s products offered to federal agencies under the relevant contract were manufactured in China, Morgan knowingly provided products that Morgan knew had been manufactured in China, in violation of the TAA and the contract. SEG received multiple federal government orders under the contract between 2003 and 2019. According to the indictment, between September 15, 2014 and August 29, 2019, approximately six federal government agencies placed at least 11 orders for ballistic and other law enforcement/security equipment from SEGβ€”which SEG sourced from China in violation of the TAA, as part of the scheme to defraudβ€” totaling approximately $658,866.92.

 

For example, the U.S. Navy placed an order with SEG for helmets, and Morgan had a series of e-mail communications with Navy contracting personnel in Indian Head, Maryland, including concerning SEG’s inability to meet the agreed-upon delivery schedule. The indictment alleges that in his e-mails, Morgan falsely advised the Navy contracting personnel that SEG had a factory in southern Virginia, that the helmets for the order β€œwere in production” there, and that the delays were due to a backorder of materials needed for the helmets. The helmets that Morgan provided under the U.S. Navy order allegedly originated from China before Morgan sent them to the Navy, in violation of the TAA and the contract. Specifically, the indictment alleges that these products were manufactured by Chinese Company 1, from which Morgan knowingly ordered them.

 

On February 16, 2016, and March 10, 2016, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service paid SEG $127,069.60 and $191,990.28, respectively, for the U.S. Navy order. For all of the orders, federal government agencies paid SEG at least approximately $488,976.92.

 

If convicted, Morgan faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for each of two counts of wire fraud. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – More than 230 scientists and infectious disease experts, from around the world, published an open letter in a scientific journal called Clinical Infectious Diseases.

 

They claim, whether propelled into the air by a sneeze or by someone simply breathing, the coronavirus is airborne gliding through spaces for an extended period of time.

 

At Mayor John Cooper’s COVID-19 task force briefing Tuesday, Dr. James Hildreth explained the findings. β€œBreathing the exhaled air from an infected person in a closed environment for more than a few minutes,” he said, β€œResults in infection by the virus.”

 

The letter goes on to explain that an infected person, speaking normally, can expel micro droplets.

 

β€œWhich is less than a tenth of a diameter of a human hair,” explained Dr. Hildreth. Those can travel up to 40 feet infecting someone clear across the room.

 

These findings differ from the World Health Organization’s recent guidance that states infection occurs though droplets or larger particles. The WHO claims airborne transmission of the virus is possible only after medical procedures which produce tiny aerosols.

 

In a briefing Tuesday, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove the WHO technical lead stated, β€œWe’re also looking at the possible role of airborne transmission in other settings where you have particularly close settings. Where you have poor ventilation. We will be releasing our brief in the coming days.”

 

The open letter calls for changes in indoor ventilation which would incorporate outdoor air to limit re-circulation particularly in public buildings, work environments, schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. As well as the following, β€œSupply general ventilation with airborne infection controls such as local exhaust, UV lights, and highly efficient filtration,” said Dr. Hildreth.

After Sayoc’s Facebook pages froze investigative journalist Shad Olson was able to capture a screenshot of Sayoc’s Facebook post, which was dated August 28, 2016, in which you can clearly see that his van did not have the stickers on it.

(CNN) β€” The US Food and Drug Administration has added five hand sanitizers to its list of products that have tested positive for a toxic chemical.

 

These additional hand sanitizer products tested positive for methanol, which is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through skin or ingested.

 

The FDA’s discovery comes just two weeks after the agency advised consumers not to use nine hand sanitizers manufactured by the Mexican company Eskbiochem SA, because samples had tested positive for methanol.

 

Exposure to significant amounts of methanol can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.

 

Anyone exposed to these hand sanitizers should seek immediate treatment, the FDA warns.

 

The five hand sanitizers added to the FDA’s list are:

Israel's Lavi fighter-bomber was designed to be one of the deadliest weapons in the air. However, it now has been revealed that after Israel discontinued the largely U.S.-funded project, it sold China the plans for the Lavi and the associated secret U.S. technology. This has enabled the Chinese to build their own version of this new generation of fighter aircraft.

 

The illegal transfer of plans for the Lavi aircraft from Tel Aviv to Beijing first became known by the Pentagon when an American surveillance satellite orbiting over China spotted several new fighter planes on the runway of a Chinese air base traditionally used for the test and evaluation of prototype aircraft. Imagery experts at the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) created rough sketches of the jet, then processed the graphic data through high-speed supercomputers in order to obtain three-dimensional representations of the prototype Chinese fighter planes.

CIA officials specializing in aviation technology were stunned at the 3-D images generated by the computers. China's newest fighter jet was in fact a copy of the Israeli Lavi, which itself was modeled upon the U.S. F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role aircraft.

 

Although Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), Israel's biggest state-owned manufacturer of arms and defense technology, was the Lavi's prime contractor, nearly 90 percent of the Lavi was funded by the Pentagon. This is just one astonishing aspect of the story of the U.S.-Israeli aircraft, the evolution of which was almost as Byzantine as its surprise ending as the most formidable weapon in China's military arsenal.

 

The Lavi program, as conceived in the early 1980s by Israeli military planners and their supporters in the Pentagon and Congress, was intended as an exceedingly generous gift from America to the people of Israel. The Pentagon never had any intention of including the Lavi in its own military aviation fleet.

 

The thinking among U.S. Defense Department officials was that the United States, having provided Israel for two decades with some of America's best fighter aircraftβ€”including F-4 Phantoms, F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falconsβ€”now should give the Jewish state the ability to manufacture its own state-of-the-art fighter planes.

 

It took American military officials very little time to decide which American fighter plane should serve as the model for the Lavi. They chose the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

 

The F-16 wasβ€”and still isβ€”the American fighter plane most sought after by foreign governments. Compact and with a highly maneuverable design, it has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack.

Couple Who Painted Over Black Lives Matter Lettering on California Street Charged With HATE CRIME

 

The California couple caught on video painting over a Black Lives Matter mural in Martinez on the Fourth of July are being charged with a hate crime by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office.

Nichole Anderson and David Nelson have been charged with three misdemeanors for the painting, meanwhile hundreds if not thousands of vandals and looters have gone free during the unrest. How a Photo of a Vehicle on Social Media Helped Detectives Nab a Child Predator

 

Big Bear Lake, CALIF. β€” On November 20, 2019, Detective R. Weddel from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station opened an investigation on a case for possession of child pornography after receiving information from the tipline of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Images of under age children engaged in sexual acts were reported to be posted on a social media account with the profile name of Edgar Diaz. A search warrant for the identified profile was obtained and the account was accessed. Detective Weddel scoured through thousands of pages on the social media account which contained images, group chats, messages and IP address logs. A photograph of a vehicle shown on the social media account revealed a California license plate. A record check of the license plate confirmed the vehicle was registered to Edgar Perez Diaz and listed an address in the 700 block of Knickerbocker Road in Big Bear Lake.

 

Additional search warrants were obtained for subscriber information acquired from Diaz’s social media account. Through investigation, two additional possible addresses were located for Diaz, both in the 400 block of Georgia Street, Big Bear Lake. Surveillance was conducted on multiple dates at varying times to determine an exact address for Diaz.

 

On April 16, 2020, Detective Weddel and deputies from the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Diaz’s residence in the 400 block of Georgia Street, Big Bear Lake. Multiple electronic devices and external storage drives belonging to Diaz and believed to contain illicit pornographic images were seized. A further search warrant for the storage devices was obtained, and a forensic analysis was subsequently conducted on the devices by the Sheriff’s Department’s High-Tech Crimes Detail. A lengthy and thorough investigation resulted in thousands of media files ultimately being recovered from Diaz’s devices, including over 600 images and videos depicting prepubescent minor male and female children engaged in sexual acts.

 

Following the months-long investigation, the results of the forensic analysis were provided to Detective Weddel. Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during the investigative process, it was unknown whether Edgar Perez Diaz was employed or if he still lived at the previously identified residences. Surveillance was again conducted on multiple dates at varying times. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers held his first public press conference in two weeks on Tuesday.

 

He said the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling throwing out his Safer at Home order cost lives.

 

In the early days of the state's coronavirus response, the state implemented business closures and stay home orders.

 

But the measures were overturned before they were set to expire in May.

 

Evers said that decision cost some Wisconsinites their lives.

 

"We would've saved more lives and that we would've prevented more people from having positive tests for COVID-19," he said Tuesday.

 

The Wisconsin State Fair Park Expo Center was turned into a $15 million field hospital.

 

It remains largely unused right now.

 

But even if cases continue to grow, the governor said he almost certainly can't issue any statewide orders to help slow the spread of the virus.

 

"We really don't know if I have the authority to do that," Evers said.

 

He was also asked if he'd consider a statewide face mask mandate, as other states have implemented.

 

"We're looking at it, but frankly, the Supreme Court has made it very much more complex than it ever should've been," Evers said.

 

He conceded there's a nearly 100% chance any state order would again be defeated in the Supreme Court.

SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel are today leading a coalition of six attorneys general in a lawsuit against U.S. Department of Education (Department) Secretary Betsy DeVos’ unlawful attempt to siphon pandemic relief funds away from K-12 public schools. The lawsuit follows the latest effort by Secretary DeVos to undermine congressional intent through the promulgation of regulations that unlawfully reinterpret the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and run counter to efforts to ensure that students and schools with demonstrated financial need get the resources they have been promised. As a result of the interim final rule, tens of millions of dollars in California alone could be diverted away from taxpayer-funded public schools in our poorest school districts to private institutions β€” in violation of the requirements established by Congress, the Administrative Procedure Act, and the U.S. Constitution.

 

β€œAgain, and again, the Trump Administration takes action to steal from the poor and give to the rich,” said Attorney General Becerra. β€œWhether it’s President Trump or Secretary DeVos, we won’t stand by when the education of our children or the rule of law is under threat. Congress set clear parameters on how to spend this money in order to confront the devastating effects of a pandemic on our schools. β€œThis pandemic has exacerbated the inequities that impact our most vulnerable students, and our public schools need every last dollar to safely and effectively resume learning,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. β€œWe fully support this legal action because we agree it is unconscionable to divert funds from the students who need these resources the most.”

 

On March 27, 2020, Congress enacted the CARES Act in response to the ongoing pandemic and its impacts across the country. Under the act, Secretary DeVos is required to allocate funding to help schools prevent, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19. As part of the CARES Act, Congress set forth a formula, through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, for the distribution of $13.2 billion in aid to K-12 schools nationwide β€” with about $1.5 billion for public schools in California. As part of the act, aid to K-12 schools is required to be distributed in line with Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (Title I). Title I funds are generally aimed at aiding children from low-income families across the country. Under the CARES Act, private schools are only eligible for funds in certain circumstances in line with Title I criteria. However, in direct contravention of Congressional intent, the Department’s interim final rule blows up the legislated mechanism by requiring the inclusion of private schools based on the total population they serve, instead of income as dictated by the CARES Act. Moreover, the Department admits that this rule allows private schools β€” with tuitions more akin to private colleges β€” to demand these emergency funds, leaving the poorest school districts with less. In the lawsuit, the coalition asserts that the Department’s interim final rule unlawfully exceeds its authority, undermines Congressional intent, fails to adequately justify its decision in breach of the Administrative Procedure Act, and violates the U.S. Constitution.

 

Attorney General Becerra is committed to protecting the rights of students in California and across the country. In June, the Attorney General filed suit to challenge Secretary DeVos’ unlawful new rule that weakens protections for survivors of sexual violence in schools. In April, he opposed a federal proposal that would create loopholes that favor high sodium foods like pizza, french fries, and burgers in school meals. Last year, Attorney General Becerra secured a historic desegregation agreement with the Sausalito Marin City School District. He also reached an agreement with the Stockton Unified School District and its police department to address discriminatory treatment of minority students and students with disabilities.

 

In filing the lawsuit, Attorney General Becerra is joined by the attorneys general of Michigan, Maine, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

First, to those who are offering support – THANK YOU. I am way outside the wire.

 

In the background there is good news. The insurance policy against an anticipated Deep State cover-up is proceeding swimmingly. Two years of preparation are paying dividends.

 

The next few weeks are critical. Unfortunately, charging the ramparts means having to spend less time on research and writing and more time on preparation for the confrontation I have discussed. That’s why the daily content of the site is less. However, that said, an alliance of allies is forming smoothly.

 

Each person is starting to grasp this is much bigger than previously thought. I’m also traveling and setting the systems in place to trigger events with or without a Barr-Durham reveal. Hoping for β€˜with’, but preparing for β€˜without’.

An article in the Intercept last week reported that a Wikipedia editor was scrubbing the page of former Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), considered a prominent member of the shortlist to be Joe Biden’s Vice Presidental pick. The piece mentioned changes such as removing a past campaign finance scandal and Harris’ record as a hard-line prosecutor. Changes not mentioned include removals of the alleged role nepotism played in her early political career and significant favorable additions about Harris.

 

Other Wikipedia editors have begun working to undo the changes made to the Harris page, although many details remain missing. On Twitter, the Wikipedia editor responsible for most removals was identified as Bao Nguyen, a former volunteer organizer for the Harris campaign. Similarly, editors previously created pages for fellow Presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang without disclosing their connections to them.

 

The Intercept article by Aida Chavez notes that in 2016, editors had been heavily involved in contributing to the article on Tim Kaine prior to him being announced as Hillary Clinton’s Vice Presidential pick. As a result, a user on Reddit created a script to monitor for activity about prospective VP picks for Biden and noticed significant editing of the page for Kamala Harris. Other Reddit users identified a single editor by the username β€œBnguyen1114” as the primary party responsible for the activity.

 

Chavez delved into the editor’s activity on the Harris page and how he removed content potentially unfavorable to Harris. Among the edits noted was the removal of a paragraph regarding her defense of Orange County prosecutors implicated in widespread misconduct, which Nguyen claimed was removed for β€œproof-reading” yet not restored until after the Intercept piece. Nguyen also removed details about a campaign finance violation involving Harris’ campaign for District Attorney, removing most criticism of defenses Harris gave for the violation. A quote from Harris stating β€œit is not progressive to be soft on crime” was also removed by Nguyen, but restored shortly after the Intercept article.

 

Not mentioned were other removals of unflattering material by Nguyen. These included details about Harris benefiting in her early political career from a relationship with future San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, then the Speaker of the California Assembly, who she dated. Also excluded were the substantial salaries she earned at positions to which Brown appointed her and a quote from Brown’s mayoral campaign manager about how the relationship benefited Harris. Another editor subsequently removed all mention of Brown, claiming β€œsexist” framing. Mention of Brown’s appointments was later restored, though only noting them and briefly stating she and Brown were in a relationship at the time.

 

One other detail removed involved how Harris handled an investigation into the death of Mitrice Richardson, a black woman who, after being detained by the Malibu sheriff’s department for not paying her bill at a diner, was released in the middle of the night without a car or phone and was later found dead in a canyon. Harris eventually closed an investigation she had opened into the death under pressure from the public, stating there was insufficient evidence for criminal charges. Mention of the Richardson case is still absent from the article.

Clyburn: Trump Is Trying to β€˜Deconstruct’ Liberty and Justice for All

 

Tuesday on MSNBC, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) accused President Donald Trump of attempting to deconstruct β€œwhat Barack Obama and others before him did,” referring to β€œliberty and justice for all.”

 

On Confederate statues, Clyburn said, β€œThe fact of the matter is we know history is history. Nobody is trying to change history. We’re trying to remove the honor that these people, who have dishonored our country and our history, remove them to a place where it’s proper. They should not be in Statuary Hall. The flag should not be flying over public buildings. So we’ll see what the Senate will do, but I’ll tell you, the Senate is now in play. It’s in play, in large measure, because most Americans have decided that it’s time for us to make the greatest of this country accessible and affordable for all of its citizens.”

 

He continued, β€œWe see a total commitment more than 70% of the American people are now believing that black lives do matter, not just with law enforcement, but health care, education, with the environment. Black lives matter when you put poisonous air in black neighborhoods, you’re killing black people. When you have these challenged environment issues in black neighborhoods, their lives don’t matter to you. So this is a much broader thing than just law enforcement. So I’m so proud of the Black Lives Matter movement, but I’m also proud of the fact that it looks like the majority of people who are not black now believe it’s something to be pursued.”

 

Host Katy Tur asked, β€œLet me ask you this, why do you think the president is running on protecting Confederate statues, Why is he running against the phrase β€œBlack Lives Matter”? What do you think he’s doing?”

 

Clyburn said, β€œI think he’s mimicking Ronald Reagan, who made his first speech after being nominated for the presidency in Philadelphia, Mississippi which was known for only one thing and that was the murder of three β€”and they were not all black, one black, the other two white people who are trying to register people to vote. He made a states’ rights speech at the moment, but Ron Reagan had a sophistication that this president doesn’t have. He’s mimicking Woodrow Wilson, who had β€˜Birth of a Nation,’ The first showing of β€˜Birth of a Nation’ in the White House. He was an intellectual that this president is not. This president is a throwback to Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Abraham Lincoln, and who started us to dismantling the Reconstruction-era programs that held such great promise for America. So what he’s trying to do is deconstruct so much of what Barack Obama and others before him did, to try to live out the meaning of this country liberty and justice for all.”

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Nearly 140 pounds of liquid methamphetamine and two pounds of heroin were discovered inside a vehicle’s gas tank and spare tire at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says.

 

According to the agency, the drugs were discovered after a detector dog alerted officers to the undercarriage of the vehicle around 4:30 a.m. Monday.

 

Following the alert, officers guided the driver, a 52-year-old woman who is a citizen of Mexico and lawful U.S. resident, to a secure location for inspection.

 

That’s when, according to CBP, officers found the drugs hidden inside the gas tank and spare tire.

 

The driver was turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations while a 71-year-old female passenger was released.

 

The narcotics are estimated to have a value of $175,000.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A previously-deported sex offender who tried to enter the U.S. illegally was arrested Sunday by Border Patrol agents.

 

On July 5 around 1:30 a.m., agents patrolling the U.S./Mexico border near Tecate saw three people enter the U.S. illegally, the agency said.

 

All three men were arrested and, after fingerprinting all three, a records check revealed that one of the men, a 33-year-old Mexican national, had been convicted for sex crimes against a child.

 

According to the agency, the man had been convicted in 2006 of lewd acts upon a child and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was removed from the U.S. in 2014.

 

The man is currently being held in federal custody pending charges for felony illegal re-entry after deportation, Border Patrol says.

DOJ Gives Flynn More Documents β€˜Exonerating’ Him of β€˜Knowing False Statement,’ His Lawyer Says

Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, former adviser to President Donald Trump, has obtained several documents from the Justice Department (DOJ) that further prove his innocence, said his lawyer, former federal prosecutor Sidney Powell.

 

The documents include the handwritten notes of former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Tashina Gauhar from a Jan. 25, 2017, meeting, former FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok’s notes from that same meeting, an internal DOJ document dated Jan. 30, 2017, and then-Acting Attorney General Dana Boente’s handwritten notes, dated March 30, 2017, according to a notice (pdf) filed by the DOJ with the federal court in the District of Columbia on July 7.

 

The documents, not released publicly due to the court’s protective order, were discovered by U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Jensen, who was tasked in January by Attorney General William Barr to review the Flynn case.

 

β€œThe new production by Mr. Jensen includes 14 pages of notes and portions of a draft DOJ documentβ€”further exonerating General Flynn not only on the point of materiality but also of any intent to deceive or knowing false statement,” Powell told The Epoch Times via email.

 

β€œIt corroborates some information we already hadβ€”but from new sourcesβ€”and it reveals some new information that has been withheld for three years.”

 

Flynn, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency under the Obama administration and former national security adviser to Trump, pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to the FBI in an interview almost a year prior.

 

In January, he moved to withdraw his plea. In May, the DOJ moved to dismiss the case after the Jensen review uncovered documents suggesting the FBI questioned Flynn to elicit false statements from him, which isn’t a proper investigative purpose.

 

District Judge Emmet Sullivan, who is presiding over the case, took the unusual step of holding back his approval of the motion to dismiss, and even appointed an amicus curiae (friend of court) to argue against the dismissal.

 

Backed by the DOJ, Flynn asked the District of Columbia Appeals Court for an extraordinary intervention (writ of mandamus), arguing that Sullivan doesn’t have the authority to delay or question the DOJ’s motion in these circumstances.

 

A three-judge panel on the appeals court ordered Sullivan to accept the dismissal on June 24, but Sullivan has yet to comply. Appeals court decisions take three weeks to go into effect, giving Sullivan time to ask the whole court (12 judges) to review the decision. A majority of the judges would have to agree.

 

In the meantime, the Jensen review continues and as long as the case is open, Flynn is still slated to the findings.

 

β€œThe longer Judge Sullivan takes to dismiss the case, the more stuff they owe me,” Powell said, during an interview with The Epoch Times’ Jan Jekielek. β€œThere’s still a long list of things that I know are there.”

 

The DOJ’s most recent court filing says that β€œadditional documents may be forthcoming.β€œ

 

Flynn was originally targeted by the FBI in August 2016 for alleged ties to Russia. After four months, the FBI moved to close the case, saying it found no derogatory information on Flynn.

 

Strzok intervened in January 2017 to keep the case open at the behest of the FBI leadership, contemporaneous text messages show.

 

His notes from that time indicate that then-President Barack Obama told the FBI that β€œthe right people” should be on the Flynn case, while then-Vice President Joe Biden brought up the idea of a Logan Act violation.

 

The Logan Act is an obscure 18th-century law prohibiting private citizens from conducting diplomacy with foreign nations without White House approval. Nobody has ever been successfully prosecuted under the statute and its constitutionality has been questioned, given the emphasis on First Amendment rights in the past decades.

 

According to the DOJ’s motion to dismiss, the FBI kept the case open using the justification that Flynn violated the Logan Act in his calls with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian Ambassador to the United States at the time.

 

Flynn asked the ambassador in December 2016 for Russia to only respond reciprocally to Obama’s expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats less than a month before leaving office.

 

After Strzok and Supervisory Special Agent Joe Pientka interviewed Flynn on Jan. 24, 2017, Strzok said in a report from the interview that Flynn denied he made such a request to Kislyak.

 

Powell has said Flynn didn’t lie and, at most, didn’t remember.

On September 13, 1985, an Air Force pilot pushed his F-15A into a steep climb at near-supersonic speeds as he prepared to launch into history. The pilot had prepared many months for what he was about to do: fire a heat-seeking missile towards a satellite the size of a 1969 Volkswagen as it hurtled through orbit at five miles a second. Basically, he was about to hit a bullet with another bullet, which would require absolutely perfect timing. But the pilot was ready for it.

 

"After we left the tanker, I started getting very confident we were going to make our timing," said Maj. Gen. Wilbert "Doug" Pearson Jr. (ret.), who was then a major. "Everything was looking just perfect as we flew out to the launch point."

 

The G-forces piled on as Pearson climbed 7 miles over the Pacific Ocean at nearly Mach 1. He was about 200 miles off the coast of southern California, but his target, an aging weather satellite, was still over Hawaii, more than 2,000 miles west. That was just fine for Pearson, whose aircraft carried the ASM-135, a missile purpose-built to hit that faraway mark.

 

At 38,100 feet, Pearson launched the missile, which blew through two rocket stages as it left the atmosphere. It then released a miniature homing vehicle that locked onto the satellite's infrared image and rammed it at 15,000 miles per hour 345 miles above the Earth.

 

Pearson was too far away to see the hit or the 285 pieces of debris that scattered into orbit. Mission control back at Vandenberg Air Force Base also couldn't tell him, since they were not using a secure channel and the event was considered classified. But the major had worked out a code with his friend Scott in the control room.

 

"I'm going to level off at 36,000 feet today," Pearson told Scott before the flight. "You can tell me if that's a good altitude or bad altitude. If you say that's a good altitude, I'm going to assume we hit it. And if you told me that's a bad altitude, I'm going to assume we missed."

 

But when the time came, Pearson didn't need the code to figure out what happened.

 

"When Scott keyed the microphone, he couldn't get a word out because all the screaming and yelling at the control room totally overrode him," Pearson said. "I had a pretty good idea we'd hit it at that point."

 

How did Pearson become the first pilot in history to shoot down an orbiting satellite, and why has nobody done it since? The decorated aviator talked about it with Task & Purpose earlier this summer:

 

Why was it necessary to shoot down a satellite from an aircraft?

 

The real reason we were trying to do this was at the time the Soviet Union had developed a robust capability of putting up very small satellites that could keep up with where our military forces were, primarily our ships at sea.

 

At the time, we had the ability to show up a couple of hundred miles off somebody's shore and it could be pretty intimidating. But with overhead photography, they could keep up with where our carriers were. So we couldn't surprise anybody to the same extent.

 

Earlier programs identified how absolutely difficult it was to hit a satellite with another object, because things in space, in order to be in orbit around the Earth, have to move at very high velocities, and hitting something at very high velocities is very difficult.

 

Our program was designed to do that with an airplane because you don't know exactly where the target's going to appear. A ship can't move very fast, and a ground-based system can't move very fast or at all. If a target comes in your area it pretty much has to come right over your base or your ship. But an airplane can move fairly fast and has a range of plus or minus 500 miles from its operating base. So that's why an airplane was looked at.

 

Why an F-15?

 

It was the real racehorse of the fighter community. And it was big enough and powerful enough that it could carry a fairly large missile on the centerline. So it was the perfect choice. And it had good navigation capabilities, very reliable, and it could operate from many bases along the East or West coast.

Without this separation of population dynamics from WHO public-health policy, the Vatican would have found it much more difficult to subsequently manipulate governments on such issues as family planning and abortion. National leaders would have been able to refer to the international consensus, as demonstrated by WHO policy. WHO, they could have insisted, has determined that family planning and abortion – like clean water, good nutrition, and immunizations – are necessary to protect public health.

 

Professor Siegel decided to speak out on the subject. As he was involved in the WHO at an early stage, his personal experience provides ample evidence that the Vatican influenced WHO policy development from the outset, during the early period of the Interim Commission in 1946. In its 63-year history, this international health body has had a deplorable record in family planning. Its commitment has been minuscule, and even today family planning accounts for only a tiny fraction of its budget.

 

Professor Siegel joined the World Health Organization in 1946, when it was still in its formative stages – under the umbrella of the United Nations, created just the year before. Because of his earlier work in North America and the Middle East, he was asked, in effect, to be one of WHO's "founding fathers". So he came on board on the senior staff of the Interim Commission. Dr. Brock Chisholm of Canada was the Executive Director of the Commission, which set up the permanent organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. HOUSTON - While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, large gatherings of people are still, generally, out of the question. Now, a partnership between two Texas companies hopes to make some of those events cleaner and safer.

 

"We want to become experts in disinfecting large public venues," says Paul Woessner of Arvika Aerial Tech. He started the company after exploring safe ways to disinfect his Houston and New Braunfels flight schools to keep planes, facilities, and students safe.

 

After seeing a new generation of non-toxic, yet efficient, disinfectant, Woessner got the idea of using drones to spray large spaces to kill-off any lingering virus, before people could get infected.

 

"We can disinfect a 15.000 seat stadium in, probably, under an hour," says Woessner, "Contactless, with nobody up in the stands and not needing to hire an army, to do it."

 

He's partnering with Dallas-based 'R-Water' founder, Rayne Guest. "COVID-19 is a virus and it's not especially hard to kill," says Guest.

 

She founded the company to find an alternative to toxic and inefficient disinfectants that are, widely, in use.

 

The company's device produces 'hypochlorous acid', which is non-toxic and found in white blood cells to kill pathogens. Used as a disinfectant, Guest says it works ten times faster than traditional products and she was intrigued by Woessner's plan.

 

"Just the fact that they can go these areas, like large stadiums, and really effectively spray all the surfaces with their drones is really a very appealing way to apply a disinfectant," says Guest.

 

Paul Woessner hopes it'll replace some of the uncertainty we've come to live with. "If we're healthy and sitting in a disinfected facility, I have confidence to go back," he says.

 

The partnership has already started its sales pitch in Texas and is ready to branch out to neighboring states to offer the service.

I was watching band of brothers and towards the end of the war, everyone was less than enthusiastic to do a mission that was considered risky, because they wanted to go home and no one wanted to be the last soldier killed in the war.

 

Now, we are MUCH better off and comfy in our homes during all of this. However, I can relate to the feeling those soldiers had. For the first time, I’m not fully sure my family and I are gonna make it out of all of this. Transplants are how two other men, nicknamed the Berlin and London patients for where they were treated, were cured previously.

 

β€œI’m the living proof it’s possible to be cured,” Adam Castillejo, the London patient, said in a news conference at the AIDS meeting, which is being held online because of the coronavirus pandemic.

 

He and the Berlin patient, Timothy Ray Brown, had donors with a gene that confers natural immunity to HIV infection. Such transplants are too medically risky and impractical to attempt on a large scale, so doctors have been trying other approaches.

 

It’s hard to eliminate HIV because it establishes an early β€œreservoir” of blood cells where it lies dormant and can’t be attacked by medicines or the immune system. Infections can be controlled with drugs, but as soon as patients stop taking them, the dormant virus activates and renews the disease.

 

Dr. Ricardo Diaz of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil led a study testing strong and new drug combinations to try to purge this reservoir.

 

β€œWe are trying to wake up the virus” and boost the immune system’s ability to eliminate it once it’s flushed out of hiding, Diaz explained. The Brazil man had been taking a standard three-drug combo to suppress his virus. In September 2015, Diaz added two newer ones to intensify his treatment β€” dolutegravir and maraviroc β€” plus nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3 that may help expose dormant virus.

 

After nearly a year, the patient went back to the standard three drugs for two more years, then stopped all HIV medicines in March 2019. The virus has been undetectable in many blood and tissue samples since then.

 

β€œWe can’t search the entire body, but by the best evidence, we do not have infected cells,” Diaz said.

 

The most convincing evidence: Tests show the man has lost nearly all HIV antibodies β€” substances the immune system makes when fighting the virus.

 

Eager for independent verification, the patient said he went to a counseling center for an anonymous HIV test in February. It was negative.

 

β€œHe made a picture of the results” and sent a photo of them, Diaz said.

 

The antibody results are β€œthe most fascinating part of this story,” said Deeks. β€œThese are solid scientists” and β€œthe team may have come up with something that helps,” but it’s going to take verification of these results and much more testing to know, he said.

 

In particular, doctors will want to see proof from blood tests that the patient truly had stopped his HIV medicines. Diaz said all HIV patients in Brazil get their medicines from a government health program and that he verified the man had stopped.

 

β€œI think it’s very promising. This patient might be cured,” but it will take more time to know, Diaz said.

 

The treatment did not succeed in four others treated the same way, or in any of the others in the 30-person study testing related approaches.
