Anon is 100% correct. Younganons have no idea what awake people have had to experience. Imagine life without the internet, where if you wanted non-mainstream information you had to read a book (if the local library had it), buy a book, buy a counterculture newsletter, read a newspaper, listen to a talk radio show, go to a conference or a lecture, etc. Oh and how do you select a book that isn't in the library? First, it assures the audience that the author is aware of the implausible plot development that just happened, and that they aren't trying to slip something past the audience. Second, it assures the audience that the world of the story is like Real Life: what's implausible for you or me is just as implausible for these characters, and just as likely to provoke an incredulous response.

The creators are using the tactic of self-deprecatingly pointing out their own flaws themselves, thus depriving critics and opponents of their ammunition. The Turkey City Lexicon refers to this flavor of Lampshade Hanging as a "Signal from Freud", and reminds the author that if your characters are complaining about how stupid the latest plot development is, maybe your subconscious is trying to tell you something.

On the other hand, Lampshade Hanging done well can make for an entertaining piece of Medium Awareness or momentary lack of Genre Blindness. It can also be used to take care of Fridge Logic, without having to actually do anything. For this reason, it can either be seen as making a bad movie even worse or as adding clever writing and humour.

This practice is also known as "hanging a clock on it", "hanging a lantern on it", or "spotlighting it". In the film industry it's sometimes called "hanging a red flag" on something, after the screenwriting adage, "To hang a red flag on something takes the curse off of it," meaning that to lampshade something decreases the negative effects it might otherwise have. Teodolinda Barolini referred to this as "the Geryon Principle" in reference to how Dante narrates how unbelievable his "true" story is the more fantastical it gets. Commonly seen in the self-aware shows that make up the Deconstructor Fleet; rarely used in the presence of a Drop-In Character. If large numbers of lampshades are hung, then the writers believe lampshades are Better Than a Bare Bulb, this trope's Logical Extreme.

Hypocrisy Nod and Inspiration Nod are specific types of this. Meta Guy is the fellow who does this all the time. Sometimes takes the form of This Is the Part Where…. Compare Discussed Trope, Post-Modernism and Playing with a Trope. No Fourth Wall happens when characters not only discuss tropes, but the writers as well.

Italy accuses NGO migrant ship of dumping toxic waste

ROME (Reuters) - Italian magistrates on Tuesday accused the Doctors without Borders (MSF) charity of illegally dumping toxic waste at ports in southern Italy in what MSF said was an attempt to undermine migrant rescue efforts.

Magistrates ordered the MSF-operated ship Aquarius, which has saved thousands of migrants since 2016, to be impounded but the charity denied any wrongdoing and accused Italy of seeking to criminalize humanitarian search and rescue missions.

The Aquarius has been blocked at the French port of Marseilles since September, after failing to find a country willing to register its trips to the southern Mediterranean.

It was not immediately clear if French authorities would impound the ship.

The public prosecutor’s office in Catania, Sicily, said it believed crew on the Aquarius, and its sister ship VOS Prudence, had illegally dumped potentially dangerous medical waste among ordinary rubbish between January, 2017 and May, 2018.

It said in a statement 24,000 kg (52,900 lb) of suspect waste, including potentially hazardous medical matter, was handed over to local authorities at several ports in Italy avoiding costly safe disposal procedures.

Such material included migrants’ clothes, food and “infectious sanitary waste”, it added.

The prosecutors said the ship operators knew the migrants’ clothes could transmit viruses contracted during their journeys. They added that cases of scabies, HIV, meningitis and respiratory infections had been found amongst the migrants.

ACCOUNTS FROZEN

By failing to declare possibly dangerous materials, the ships’ operators avoided about 460,000 euros ($526,000) of waste disposal costs, prosecutors said. They ordered that this sum be immediately frozen in the accounts of the charities.

“This is an extreme, worrying effort to stop at all costs our search and rescue activity in the sea,” Karline Kleijer, head of emergencies at MSF, said in a statement.

The SOS Mediterranee charity called on France to “show restraint” in the face of the Italian investigation.

The Italian government has led a crackdown against Mediterranean rescue ships since taking office in June, denying them access to local ports following the arrival of almost 650,000 people from North Africa since 2014.

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who heads the far-right League party, welcomed Tuesday’s move by Catania magistrates.

Orange County, California — once considered a conservative holdout in the blue state — has been electorally swept by Democrats in the midterm elections, coinciding with the region’s booming foreign-born populations.

Until the midterm elections, four of Orange County’s six congressional districts were held by Republicans, including Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Rep. Mimi Walters (R-CA).

In the midterms, though, Democrats swept Orange County with wins in all six congressional districts, turning the region blue. Thanksgiving is a time of great American traditions. This is one of them, when one turkey gets a Presidential pardon. [But both will get pardons today.]

Honest Abe was the first to start this tradition of turkey pardons when his son Tad implored him to save the turkey. “Please, dad, please dad, save it!”

The two turkeys are named Peas and his alternate, Carrots. The winner of this vote was decided by a fair and open election on the WH website. This was a fair election. Unfortunately, Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount. And we’re still fighting with Carrots. And I will tell you, we’ve come to a conclusion. Carrots, I am sorry to tell you, the result did not change. [As an aside] It’s too bad for Carrots.

Apple's iOS Boots Tumblr from App Store over Child Pornography

Apple has booted the notorious left-leaning social media titan Tumblr from their iOS app store over allegations swirling around child pornography, according to CNET.

The application’s disappearance has sent shockwaves across the industry, where it appears that child porn slipped past the company's filters and algorithms to make itself readily available for distribution and download.

A Tumblr spokesperson released the following statement:

"We're committed to helping build a safe online environment for all users, and we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to media featuring child sexual exploitation and abuse. As this is an industry-wide problem, we work collaboratively with our industry peers and partners like [the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children] (NCMEC) to actively monitor content uploaded to the platform. Every image uploaded to Tumblr is scanned against an industry database of known child sexual abuse material, and images that are detected never reach the platform.”

”A routine audit discovered content on our platform that had not yet been included in the industry database. We immediately removed this content. Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We're continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team.”

Child pornographic content found on any major social media website tends to involve coordination with federal law enforcement agencies, explaining the lack of explanation as per Tumblr’s removal.

At The Goldwater, we've focused heavily on reporting surrounding the arrests of pedophiles or in relation to child pornography, and have reported several cases where a suspect was engaged in sharing child pornography via the Tumblr platform.

As of this time, Tumblr has yet to address when they'll be available for download again via the Apple store.

“We’re working to resolve an issue with the iOS app and hope to be fully functional again soon. We really appreciate your patience as we figure this out, and we'll update this article when we have news to share,” Tumblr said.
