Polish mayor stabbed in shocking on-stage attack dies in hospital

The mayor of Poland’s northern city of Gdansk, who was critically injured by a knifeman during a charity concert performance, has succumbed to his wounds in hospital, a medical official has said.

Mayor Pawel Adamowicz was on Sunday stabbed several times by a man claiming to have been wrongfully accused and jailed. Known only as Stefan W., the attacker ran to the stage at an annual charity event collecting money for Polish medical facilities. The assault took place right in front of a crowd of people. The knifeman then grabbed the microphone, accusing the mayor’s party, The Civil Platform, of his alleged ordeal.

The 53-year-old Adamowicz suffered a serious injury to the heart as well as cuts to his diaphragm and abdominal organs and had to be resuscitated right on stage before being hospitalized. He underwent emergency surgery and was placed on life support “in a very critical condition,” Jerzy Karpinski, a physician with the Gdansk regional health department, told the Polish PAP news agency. Adamowicz succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Interior Minister Joachim Brudzinski has called the knifeman “a repeat offender who has been convicted of armed robberies,” in a Twitter post, denying that there was any political motive behind the incident. Stefan W. has been charged with homicide, a spokesman for the Polish Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.

The 27-year-old attacker, himself a resident of Gdansk, was wearing a press badge, police said, explaining how he managed to get to the stage.

The assaliant served a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence and was released in late December, Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro told reporters. He added that the man had unsuccessfully applied for his conditional release three times before eventually serving his time in full.

Prosecutor Krzysztof Sierak said the knifeman is now set to undergo psychiatric examination. However, he has apparently been found to be mentally unstable in the past.

“During his prison term, closer to its end, a psychiatrist examined this person. It was detected that he was in remission of a serious [mental] disorder… This did not impede him from serving his term to the end,” a representative of the Polish penitentiary service told Sputnik news agency.

James Baker: The Leaker of the Latest Trump as Russian Agent – But Why?

James Baker was the FBI’s top lawyer.

He was in fact — General Counsel.

The Notre Dame and University of Michigan Law School graduate was a long time government employee.

He is the deepest of the Deep State.

He started in 1990 and joined the FBI’s Office of International Policy and Review in 1996.

In 1998 he was promoted to Deputy Counsel for Intelligence Operations.

From May 2001 he served as Acting Counsel, and in January 2002 was appointed Counsel.

Baker was reassigned from his top perch position with “changed duties” (demoted) when a shadow was cast upon him in late 2017.

He resigned before the new FBI Director Christopher Wray had his confirmation.

Baker had a very close friend.

It was James Comey.

He was after all tapped by Comey to be the FBI’s top lawyer in January 2014.

The two were long time colleagues at both the DOJ and for a spell at the private Bridgewater Associates.

Baker was allegedly involved in a leak.

The probe looking into it, described it as “a strange interagency dispute that … attracted the attention of senior lawmakers”, and ended with a decision not to charge anyone, as reported by the Washington Post.

It involved the NSA and it came to haunt him.

He was also front and center in the issues involving agent Peter Strzok and his mistress, another FBI agent, Lisa Page.

When their emails opposing Trump or worse, were discovered Baker was on the scene.

Some went missing, and the Congress did not see them in a timely fashion, as they had requested.

Baker was always involved in FISA warrant requests.He was the FBI ‘go-to’ on FISA.

Boeing 707 cargo plane crashes in Iran

A Boeing 707 cargo plane flying from the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan has crashed in Iran's Alborz province after it overshot the runway during landing. All 16 people on board the aircraft but one are presumed dead.

Ex-Tribune reporter said to have 'collaborative' relationship with CIA

A website cofounded by journalist Glenn Greenwald has published emails suggesting that a former Tribune Washington bureau national security reporter submitted some of his work to CIA officials prior to publication, a practice banned by many media outlets, including Tribune.

Ken Dilanian, a former staff writer for the newspaper chain that includes the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, had a "closely collaborative relationship with the CIA," according to the article, published Thursday by the online news site the Intercept.

In documents made public by the website, Dilanian appeared to promise positive news coverage and on occasion sent the CIA press office entire story drafts for review prior to publication. In at least one instance, the CIA's reaction appears to have led to significant changes in a story eventually published by Tribune newspapers, according to the emails.

"I'm working on a story about congressional oversight of drone strikes that can present a good opportunity for you guys," Dilanian wrote in one email to a CIA press officer, explaining that what he intended to report would be "reassuring to the public" about CIA drone strikes, according to the Intercept.

In another exchange, the website reported, Dilanian sent a full draft of an unpublished report about drone strikes along with the subject line, "does this look better?" In another, he directly asks the agency officer: "You wouldn't put out disinformation on this, would you?"

David Lauter, chief of the Tribune Washington bureau, said the emails suggest a possible violation of Tribune news policy.

"We have a very clear rule that has been in place for quite a few years that tells reporters not to share copies of stories outside the newsroom," Lauter said. "I am disappointed that the emails indicate that Ken may have violated that rule.

"We don't have reason to believe that any of the stories we published were in any way inaccurate," Lauter added.

Dilanian left Tribune in May to join the Associated Press, and the emails released by the CIA cover only a few months of his tenure with Tribune, the Intercept said.

Paul Colford, director of media relations for the AP, said: "We were satisfied that any pre-publication exchanges that Ken had with the CIA before joining AP were in pursuit of accuracy in his reporting on intelligence matters."

Dilanian declined to comment.

Greenwald is a former reporter for the Guardian who has reported extensively on national security issues. He cofounded the Intercept in part as a means of reporting on documents uncovered by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

President Donald Trump ridiculed Congressional Democrats on Monday for traveling to Puerto Rico amidst the partial government shutdown.

“I’ve been here all weekend,” Trump said. “A lot of the Democrats were in Puerto Rico celebrating something. I don’t know, maybe they’re celebrating the shutdown.”

Dozens of Democrats escaped the cold snowy weather in Washington, D.C., to attend events hosted by the Latino Victory Fund and the San Juan by Bold PAC.

Stacey Abrams: ‘I Wouldn’t Oppose’ Non-Citizens Voting in Local Elections

Stacey Abrams said she would not oppose the extension of voting rights to non-citizens in local elections, offering her remarks in a Friday-aired interview on PBS’s Firing Line with Margaret Hoover.

Abrams ran for Georgia’s governorship as the Democrats’ nominee in 2018 and is the Democrats’ former leader in Georgia’s House of Representatives.

MARGARET HOOVER: What is your view about some municipalities, like San Francisco, who have decided that it’s okay for some non-citizens to vote in local elections?

STACEY ABRAMS: I think there’s a difference between municipal and state and federal.

Part of municipality — I’m not arguing for it or against it, but I will say, having been deputy city attorney, there’s a very — the granularity of what cities decide is so specific, as to, I think, allow for people to be participants in the process without it somehow undermining our larger democratic ethic that says that you should be a citizen to be a part of the conversation.

MARGARET HOOVER: So, in some cases, you would be supportive of non-citizens voting?

STACEY ABRAMS: I wouldn’t be — I wouldn’t oppose it.

Abrams predicted demographic change would benefit the Democrat Party. Hoover did not ask Abrams to which demographic changes the latter was referring.

Abrams said:

Georgia [is] changing fairly dramatically and very quickly. And I could see that there was a pathway for Democrats to surge and to start to reclaim more power in the state. I believe that we are a purple state. I like to say we’re blue and just a little confused. But the notion being that, as we continue to change demographically, our politics are gonna keep changing.

Abrams blamed “voter suppression” for her electoral defeat in Georgia’s governors’ race, describing the election as “stolen from Georgians.”

Abrams called for “mail-in voting” to become standard in national elections. Hoover did not ask about vulnerabilities to fraud in such a system.

“I think that voting by mail makes a great deal of sense,” said Abrams. “I would love to see mail-in — you know, vote by mail be a national standard.”
