“An English day if I ever saw one”

Those were some of the last words that Lieutenant Colonel William Franklin Smith Jr. said to his wife before accidentally piloting his B-25 Mitchell Bomber into the side of the New York City's Empire State Building, killing 14 people in the process.

On a routine transport mission from Bedford Army Air Field to LaGuardia Airport, just before 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 1945, Smith found himself lost in a heavy fog. With his view distorted, he was instructed to land at Newark Airport instead.

However, as he was flying slow and low to seek better visibility, he made a wrong turn to avoid the Chrysler Building and found himself staring at the Empire State Building, the city's tallest building.

Upon crashing between the 78th and 80th floors of the building's north side, the plane's jet fuel exploded, filling the skyscraper with flames. One of the plane's engines shot through the building to the other side, landing in sculptor Henry Hering's penthouse across the street, destroying about $75,000 worth of art. Other pieces of the plane landed on the street and on top of nearby structures.

As a shocked crowd watched from the street, police, firemen, and rescue workers rushed to the scene to aid those trapped and injured in the building. One of the those injured was Elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver, who was working on the 80th floor when the plane struck.

As rescue workers loaded Oliver into an Elevator for transport, the car's cables snapped and was sent into a 75-floor firey free fall to the building's basement.

Miraculously, Betty Lou survived with only a broken pelvis, back, and neck to complain about. It's said that her Guinness World Record fall was cushioned by broken cables, which piled up in a spring-like spiral on the floor of the shaft. It's also thought that the narrow lift shaft acted as a compressor for air and softened the blow.

Because it's New York City, despite the damage and a giant 18-by-20-foot hole at the top of the building, occupants returned to work the following Monday.

The 5-4 ruling could clear the way for partisan state legislatures to redraw more districts after the 2020 census. Democratic White House candidates were united in their outrage over the decision, but some liberal activists pressed them to go further, calling for changes to the court’s structure that they say would help eliminate partisan decisions.

“This is part of a pattern where the democratic process itself is being monkeyed with,” said Brian Fallon, a former aide to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign who now leads Demand Justice, a progressive group created to counter long-running conservative advocacy on the judiciary. “So just putting your faith in winning the next election is not a sufficient response. There needs to be a plan.”

Once a fringe issue, Supreme Court reform has gained traction among progressives who believe Republicans have subverted the system to install nominees to chip away at civil rights and democratic reforms. But the issue remains divisive for Democrats, even as President Donald Trump has reshaped the federal bench with more than 100 successfully confirmed judicial picks, and most of the 2020 candidates have stopped short of fully embracing measures such as increasing the size of the court or imposing term limits on the justices.

The most prominent candidate to stake out a firm agenda for overhauling the Supreme Court is Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Buttigieg has floated an expansion of the court from nine to 15 justices, an idea that hasn’t gained serious momentum since former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s failed attempt to add justices in 1937. He also has promised to empanel a “bipartisan reform commission for the purpose of recommending structural improvements to protect the Supreme Court from further politicization.”

During Thursday’s Democratic debate in Miami, Bernie Sanders criticized Buttigieg’s proposal — “I do not believe in packing the court,” the Vermont senator said — but signaled openness to another Supreme Court reform, adding that “we have the power to rotate judges” on and off the bench.

Also debating in Miami on Thursday was former Vice President Joe Biden, who’s consistently led early polls of the 2020 primary. Biden is not entertaining the idea of the sort of major Supreme Court overhaul that the Indiana mayor and some fellow Democratic presidential rivals are discussing, according to a person close to the campaign who spoke on condition of anonymity to address Biden’s views on the topic.

Other Democratic White House contenders have said they are open to discussing potential structural shifts to the high court. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, California Sen. Kamala Harris, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker all have indicated that they would consider a Supreme Court overhaul if they win the presidency.

Ezra Levin, co-founder of the liberal group Indivisible, said he’s encouraged that several candidates have expressed openness to court reforms, but he added, “It’s time to put pen to paper.” Dan Pfeiffer, a White House communications director under President Barack Obama who now hosts the liberal podcast Pod Save America, tweeted after the gerrymandering decision: “Today would be a good day for some Democrats to come out with their court reform proposals.”

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock introduced his own idea on restructuring the Supreme Court during a televised town hall in New Hampshire on the same night as the Miami debate, which he was shut out of joining after entering the primary later than other Democrats. Bullock spoke in favor of expanding the court from nine to 11 justices.

Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke suggested at the start of his presidential campaign in March that he’d be willing to consider expanding the number of justices on the court, but he hasn’t repeated that more recently. He told reporters Thursday that the Supreme Court had made “a wrong decision” but did not address questions about structural changes to the court. Earlier this month, O’Rourke’s campaign released a proposal on voting rights that calls for a constitutional amendment imposing 18-year term limits on Supreme Court justices and working with Congress to create independent redistricting commissions.

Warren proposed an election security agenda this week that included a requirement for states to use independent commissions to redraw electoral districts to curb partisan gerrymandering, which opponents say dilutes the democratic process by giving the party with majority control over a state legislature the ability to skew its congressional representation.

I stated that in earlier times men were aided through older, what we call atavistic, knowledge, through myths. They brought to expression in the form of a myth what they thought concerning the world, what entered their vision of the world secrets. Myths — the contents of mythology — can be viewed in the most manifold ways, and in fact I pointed in these observations to a positively magnificent materialistic explanation of the myth by Dupuis. In other places we have repeatedly for years examined this or the other myth. However, the myth permits of many points of view and when something has been said about it, its content is far from being exhausted. Again and again from different standpoints different things may be asserted in regard to a myth. It would be very useful for the man of today if he made himself acquainted with the nature of that thinking which underlies the mode of thought found in the concepts of mythology. For the ideas which are formed about the origin of myths, the creation of mythology, belong indeed to the realm of the modern superficial judgment which is so widespread.

Deep truths are embedded in the myths, truths more concerned with reality than those which are expressed through modern natural science about this thing or the other. Physiological, biological truths about man are to be found in the myths, and the origin of what they express rests upon the consciousness of the connection of man as microcosm with the macrocosm. Especially can one realize — and this I shall deal with today and tomorrow — when one has in mind the nature of the thinking employed in the myths, how deeply, or actually how little deeply, one is concerned with reality in ordinary modern concepts. It is therefore useful to recollect sometimes how myths have been formed among neighbouring peoples of the pre-Christian ages. Neighbours to one another and much interconnected in their culture are the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks and the Israelites. Moreover, one can say that a great part of the thinking that still rules in the soul today is connected with the knowledge of the Egyptians, Greeks and Israelites as expressed by them in the form of myth.

Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX), a former US Attorney of the Eastern District of Texas and member of the House Intelligence Committee, joined Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures this morning to discuss the Mueller testimony this past week.

Ratcliffe called Mueller’s testimony made it obvious that there’s a hole in the impeachment balloon large enough for Jerry Nadler and Adam Schiff to walk through.

He added this on the corrupt Mueller investigators.

Rep. John Ratcliffe: Nadler and Schiff are starting to look more and more like Laurel and Hardy. It’s time to move on… Trey Gowdy said it best this week, the person who learned the most about the Mueller report during Wednesday’s hearings was Robert Mueller. And that’s sad but true. And the Mueller report and its conclusions weren’t from Robert Mueller. They were written by what a lot of people believe was Hillary Clinton’s de facto legal team, people that supported her, even represented some of her aides. So the Mueller report is really going to be difficult for the Democrats or anyone to rely upon the findings of a report when they just listened to the man whose name was on top of it not have a command of what was even in it.

I have found a web site loaded with strong investigative journalism about what really goes on in the various CPS (Child Protective Services) agencies. Bill Clinton, imo, helped weaponize these agencies by approving legislation that gave federal money to states which adopted children out of foster care. Good advice. I avoid pain medication myself when possible and opt for non opioid medicines instead for pain. This is more about my health condition worsening and was work related. I have no health insurance (besides what they are supposed to do) and desperately need additional testing that the ER would likely not provide. Insurance people run the system too much (and big pharma.)

The insurance wants to force me on disability so I would have to wait a year and have a different lawyer fight for me on that issue and hopefully win. At that point I would be able to get Medicaid and get the doc visits but at the cost of waiting a year while my condition gets worse and at taxpayer expense (instead of theirs which they are supposed to provide not the taxpayers.)

Don't know what your situation is, I was a slave/consumer of the mental health care system for a very long time….doctors wouldn't treat unless I took certain meds…finally got tired of taking their poison which always resulted in some other secondary health problem…do yourself a favor, if not life threatening explore some other homeopathic methods to treat your issue…I found visualization, breathing techniques and just plain old paying attention to my own physiological and neural responses to things that would render me into absolute mental paralysis. Expand your faith, explore your physical world (nature, parks, walking running etc.)…these tools (which I did not need a doctor for) worked 90% better than anything they gave me over a 6 year period of illness….
