Several hours before dawn on June 6, 1993, two Park Service police officers were patrolling the road next to Jacob Riis Park, a long stretch of beach on the Rockaway peninsula, in Queens, when they were startled by two Asian men flagging them down. The passengers—mostly adults, but a few children—were emaciated. They had been confined in the ship’s hold for months, subsisting on rice, peanuts, and purified salt water. It had been uncomfortably hot, and many passengers wore only underwear; when they hit the water, which was fifty-three degrees, some went into cardiac arrest. One Coast Guard officer who performed CPR on two men onshore recalled, “I could feel the gristle of their bodies, the cartilage. They walked up out of the water, collapsed on the beach, and died.”

Six bodies were recovered from the surf; four others were found later. By dawn, news helicopters were capturing live footage of the disaster. The Golden Venture accident was not an isolated incident: in the preceding year, more than a dozen ships had dropped human cargo from China on American shores. In April, a ship called the Mermaid 1, carrying two hundred and thirty-seven illegal Chinese, had been intercepted by the Coast Guard near the Bahamas. In May, the Pai Sheng had slipped beneath the Golden Gate Bridge at night, depositing two hundred and fifty passengers on a San Francisco pier. An internal Department of Justice report declared an “immigration emergency”; the San Francisco Chronicle heralded a “ smuggler ship invasion .”

Maryland Postman Rescues Missing Toddler

A postal worker in Elkridge, Maryland, said Wednesday that it was God who helped him find a toddler who had been missing for nearly 10 hours.

As United States Postal Service (USPS) employee Keith Rollins drove northbound on I-95 around 8 a.m. Thursday, he noticed something unusual, according to WUSA 9.

“I happened to see a little head,” he recalled, adding, “I didn’t know whether it was a human head or whether it was an animal, so I pulled over and called 911.”

Rollins exited his vehicle and approached what he soon realized was a missing 2-year-old named Ethan Adeyemi, shivering in the cold.

“He only had a pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt, no shoes or socks, so I walked up to him. I said, ‘Hey buddy. How you doing? What’s your name? Are you OK?’ He looked at me, but I didn’t get a response from him,” the postman recalled.

Wednesday, Adeyemi’s family said he disappeared after he followed an adult outside their home at about 10:20 p.m.

When they realized he was gone, the family contacted police and began searching the surrounding area with fire personnel, K-9 units, and helicopters from neighboring departments.

However, it was Rollins who found him the next morning.

He continued:

Once I didn’t get a response from him, I decided to just scoop him up, and I took him to my vehicle. I had a sweater that I tried to cover him up with, and turned up the heat and I called the police back and said that I had the little boy in my vehicle, and within a matter of minutes, the police were there.

Authorities later said Adeyemi is believed to be on the autism spectrum and is currently non-verbal. However, he responds by clapping when he hears his own name.

Following his rescue, the boy was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for hypothermia. He is now back at home with his family who said they were thankful for the community’s efforts to find him.

Rollins, who is grandfather to a little girl about Adeyemi’s age, said he did not consider himself a hero for saving the child.

“Giving glory to God that I was able to help at that particular time and be in the correct place at the right time,” he concluded.

El Salvador standoff deepens over loan for security forces

SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR — Hundreds of supporters of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele heeded his call to converge on the country's parliament Sunday after lawmakers refused to gather to vote on a $109 million loan to better equip the country’s security forces, sharply increasing tensions between the leader and the opposition-controlled legislature.

Top commanders of the country's police and military have expressed allegiance to the president during the standoff, while positioning heavily armed security forces around and inside the legislative building.

Bukele gave an emotional speech to his supporters, who had threatened to remove opposition lawmakers from the legislature by force. But he said that after praying amid soldiers and police, he decided to ask for patience from his supporters and set a deadline of one week for lawmakers to approve the bill.

“If we wanted to press the button, we would press the button” and remove lawmakers from the legislature, he told supporters outside the building. “But I asked God and God told me: patience, patience, patience. On February 28 (2021) all these scoundrels are heading out the door outside.”

El Salvador holds municipal and legislative elections on Feb. 21 of next year.
